In the current age of fast-depleting conventional energy sources, top priority is given to exploring non-conventional energy sources, designing highly efficient energy storage systems and converting existing machines/instruments/devices into energy-efficient ones. ‘Energy efficiency’ is one of the important challenges for today’s scientific and research community, worldwide. In line with this demand, the current research was focused on developing two highly energy-efficient devices – field emitters and Li-ion batteries, using beneficial properties of carbon nanotubes (CNT). Interface-engineered, directly grown CNTs were used as cathode in field emitters, while similar structure was applied as anode in Li-ion batteries. Interface engineering was found to offer minimum resistance to electron flow and strong bonding with the substrate. Both field emitters and Li-ion battery anodes were benefitted from these advantages, demonstrating high energy efficiency. Field emitter, developed during this research, could be characterized by low turn-on field, high emission current, very high field enhancement factor and extremely good stability during long-run. Further, application of 3-dimensional design to these field emitters resulted in achieving one of the highest emission current densities reported so far. The 3-D field emitter registered 27 times increase in current density, as compared to their 2-D counterparts. These achievements were further followed by adding new functionalities, transparency and flexibility, to field emitters, keeping in view of current demand for flexible displays. A CNT-graphene hybrid structure showed appreciable emission, along with very good transparency and flexibility. Li-ion battery anodes, prepared using the interface-engineered CNTs, have offered 140% increment in capacity, as compared to conventional graphite anodes. Further, it has shown very good rate capability and an exceptional ‘zero capacity degradation’ during long cycle operation. Enhanced safety and charge transfer mechanism of this novel anode structure could be explained from structural characterization. In an attempt to progress further, CNTs were coated with ultrathin alumina by atomic layer deposition technique. These alumina-coated CNT anodes offered much higher capacity and an exceptional rate capability, with very low capacity degradation in higher current densities. These highly energy efficient CNT based anodes are expected to enhance capacities of future Li-ion batteries.

Advancements in the micro-and nano-scale fabrication techniques have opened up new avenues for the development of portable, scalable and easier-to-use biosensors. Over the last few years, electrodes made of carbon have been widely used as sensing units in biosensors due to their attractive physiochemical properties. The aim of this research is to investigate different strategies to develop functionalized high surface carbon micro/nano-structures for electrochemical and biosensing devices. High aspect ratio three-dimensional carbon microarrays were fabricated via carbon microelectromechanical systems (C-MEMS) technique, which is based on pyrolyzing pre-patterned organic photoresist polymers. To further increase the surface area of the carbon microstructures, surface porosity was introduced by two strategies, i.e. (i) using F127 as porogen and (ii) oxygen reactive ion etch (RIE) treatment. Electrochemical characterization showed that porous carbon thin film electrodes prepared by using F127 as porogen had an effective surface area (Aeff 185%) compared to the conventional carbon electrode. To achieve enhanced electrochemical sensitivity for C-MEMS based functional devices, graphene was conformally coated onto high aspect ratio three-dimensional (3D) carbon micropillar arrays using electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) technique. The amperometric response of graphene/carbon micropillar electrode arrays exhibited higher electrochemical activity, improved charge transfer and a linear response towards H2O2 detection between 250&mgr;M to 5.5mM. Furthermore, carbon structures with dimensions from 50 nano-to micrometer level have been fabricated by pyrolyzing photo-nanoimprint lithography patterned organic resist polymer. Microstructure, elemental composition and resistivity characterization of the carbon nanostructures produced by this process were very similar to conventional photoresist derived carbon. Surface functionalization of the carbon nanostructures was performed using direct amination technique. Considering the need for requisite functional groups to covalently attach bioreceptors on the carbon surface for biomolecule detection, different oxidation techniques were compared to study the types of carbon-oxygen groups formed on the surface and their percentages with respect to different oxidation pretreatment times. Finally, a label-free detection strategy using signaling aptamer/protein binding complex for platelet-derived growth factor oncoprotein detection on functionalized three-dimensional carbon microarrays platform was demonstrated. The sensor showed near linear relationship between the relative fluorescence difference and protein concentration even in the sub-nanomolar range with an excellent detection limit of 5 pmol.

Lateral ordering of InGaAs quantum dots on the GaAs (001) surface has been achieved in earlier reports, resembling an anisotropic pattern. In this work, we present a method of breaking the anisotropy of ordered quantum dots (QDs) by changing the growth environment. We show experimentally that using As(2) molecules instead of As(4) as a background flux is efficient in controlling the diffusion of distant Ga adatoms to make it possible to produce isotropic ordering of InGaAs QDs over GaAs (001). The control of the lateral ordering of QDs under As(2) flux has enabled us to improve their optical properties. Our results are consistent with reported experimental and theoretical data for structure and diffusion on the GaAs surface.

A simple and effective demonstration to help students comprehend phase diagrams and understand phase equilibria and transformations is created using common chemical solvents available in the laboratory. Common misconceptions surrounding phase diagram operations, such as components versus phases, reversibility of phase transformations, and the lever rule are addressed. Three different binary liquid mixtures of varying compatibility create contrastive phase equilibrium cases, where colorful dyes selectively dissolved in each of corresponding phases allow for quick and unambiguous perceptions of solubility limit and phase transformations. Direct feedback and test scores from a group of students show evidence of the effectiveness of the visual and active teaching tool.

The discovery of new materials and their functions has always been a fundamental component of technological progress. Nowadays, the quest for new materials is stronger than ever: sustainability, medicine, robotics and electronics are all key assets which depend on the ability to create specifically tailored materials. However, designing materials with desired properties is a difficult task, and the complexity of the discipline makes it difficult to identify general criteria. While scientists developed a set of best practices (often based on experience and expertise), this is still a trial-and-error process. This becomes even more complex when dealing with advanced functional materials. Their properties depend on structural and morphological features, which in turn depend on fabrication procedures and environment, and subtle alterations leads to dramatically different results. Because of this, materials modeling and design is one of the most prolific research fields. Many techniques and instruments are continuously developed to enable new possibilities, both in the experimental and computational realms. Scientists strive to enforce cutting-edge technologies in order to make progress. However, the field is strongly affected by unorganized file management, proliferation of custom data formats and storage procedures, both in experimental and computational research. Results are difficult to find, interpret and re-use, and a huge amount of time is spent interpreting and re-organizing data. This also strongly limit the application of data-driven and machine learning techniques. This work introduces possible solutions to the problems described above. Specifically, it talks about developing features for specific classes of advanced materials and use them to train machine learning models and accelerate computational predictions for molecular compounds; developing method for organizing non homogeneous materials data; automate the process of using devices simulations to train machine learning models; dealing with scattered experimental data and use them to discover new patterns.

Yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) ceramics were sintered by liquid phase sintering at low temperatures using bioglass as sintering additive. ZrO2-bioglass ceramics were prepared by mixing a ZrO2 stabilized with 3 Mol%Y2O3 and different amounts of bioglass based on 3CaO center dot P2O5-MgO-SiO2 system. Mixtures were compacted by uniaxial cold pressing and sintered in air, at 1200 and 1300 degrees C for 120 min. The influence of the bioglass content on the densification, tetragonal phase stability, bending strength, hardness and fracture toughness was investigated. The ceramics sintered at 1300 degrees C and prepared by addition of 3% of bioglass, exhibited the highest strength of 435 MPa, hardness of 1170 HV and fracture toughness of 6.3 MPa m(1/2). These results are related to the low monoclinic phase content, high relative density and the presence of the thermal residual stress generated between the ZrO2-matrix and bioglass grain boundary, contributing to the activation of the toughening mechanisms. Composition and orientation effects on the final recrystallization texture of three coarse-grained Nb-containing AISI 430 ferritic stainless steels (FSSs) were investigated. Hot-bands of steels containing distinct amounts of niobium, carbon and nitrogen were annealed at 1250 degrees C for 2h to promote grain growth. In particular, the amounts of Nb in solid solution vary from one grade to another. For purposes of comparison, the texture evolution of a hot-band sheet annealed at 1030 degrees C for 1 min (finer grain structure) was also investigated. Subsequently, the four sheets were cold rolled up to 80% reduction and then annealed at 800 degrees C for 15 min. Texture was determined using X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Noticeable differences regarding the final recrystallization texture and microstructure were observed in the four investigated grades. Results suggest that distinct nucleation mechanisms take place within these large grains leading to the development of different final recrystallization textures. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Oxide dispersion strengthened reduced-activation ferritic-martensitic steels are promising candidates for applications in future fusion power plants. Samples of a reduced activation ferritic-martensitic 9 wt.%Cr-oxide dispersion strengthened Eurofer steel were cold rolled to 80% reduction in thickness and annealed in vacuum for 1 h from 200 to 1350 degrees C to evaluate its thermal stability. Vickers microhardness testing and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) were used to characterize the microstructure. The microstructural changes were also followed by magnetic measurements, in particular the corresponding variation of the coercive field (H(c)), as a function of the annealing treatment. Results show that magnetic measurements were sensitive to detect the changes, in particular the martensitic transformation, in samples annealed above 850 degrees C (austenitic regime). A combination of an extension of the topological instability ""lambda criterion"" and a thermodynamic criterion were applied to the Al-La system, indicating the best range of compositions for glass formation. Alloy compositions in this range were prepared by melt-spinning and casting in an arc-melting furnace with a wedge-section copper mold. The GFA of these samples was evaluated by X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that the gamma* parameter of compositions with high GFA is higher, corresponding to a range in which the lambda parameter is greater than 0.1, which are compositions far from Al solid solution. A new alloy was identified with the best GFA reported so far for this system, showing a maximum thickness of 286 mu m in a wedge-section copper mold. In this work, the synthesis of Y(2)O(3) stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP)-alumina (Al(2)O(3)) powder mixture was performed by high-energy ball milling and the sintering behavior of this composite was investigated. In order to understand the phase transformations occurring during ball milling, samples were collected after different milling times, from 1 to 60 h. The milled powders were compacted by cold uniaxial pressing and sintered at 1400 and 1600 degrees C. Both powders and sintered samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry analysis (EDS) and mechanical properties. Fully dense samples were obtained after sintering at 1600 degrees C, while the samples sintered at 1400 degrees C presented a full density for powder mixtures milled for 30 and 60 h. Fracture toughness and Vickers hardnessvalues of the Y-T-ZP/Al(2)O(3) nanocomposite were improved due to dispersed Al(2)O(3) grains and reduced ZrO(2) grain size. Samples sintered at 1400 degrees C, based on powders milled for 60 h, presented high K(IC) and hardness values near to 8.0 Mpan(1/2) and 15 GPa, respectively (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. The internal stresses and crystallographic texture in alpha-Al(2)O(3) scales grown on iron aluminides at 1100 degrees C were determined in situ using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. In the first hour of oxidation, alpha-Al(2)O(3) was formed by direct nucleation and by conversion from transition oxides (either theta-Al(2)O(3) or a mixed Fe-Al oxide). A sharp texture develops connected with the direct nucleation of alpha-Al(2)O(3), in contrast to the weaker texture observed in alpha-Al(2)O(3) originated by previous transformations, which also yielded tensile stresses in early oxidation stages. With the aim of investigating a laser-welded dissimilar joint of TWIP and TRIP steel sheets, the microstructure was characterized by means of OM, SEM, and EBSD to differentiate the fusion zone, heat-affected zone, and the base material. OIM was used to differentiate between ferritic, bainitic, and martensitic structures. Compositions were measured by means of optical emission spectrometry and EDX to evaluate the effect of manganese segregation. Microhardness measurements and tensile tests were performed to evaluate the mechanical properties of the joint. Residual stresses and XRD phase quantification were used to characterize the weld. Grain coarsening and martensitic areas were found in the fusion zone, and they had significant effects on the mechanical properties of the weld. The heat-affected zone of the TRIP steel and the corresponding base material showed considerable differences in the microstructure and properties. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An extensive set of experiments was performed on a semi-solid A356 alloy in order to assess its flow behavior, mechanical properties, microstructural evolution and porosity level. Three different microstructural conditioning techniques (raw material preparation) were employed: deformation recrystallization, magnetohydrodynamic stirring and low temperature pouring. Measurement of microstructural parameters such as Al-alpha particle size, shape factor, contiguity and entrapped liquid showed a relative equivalency among the various conditioning techniques. It was found that the strongest influence on semi-solid slurry fluidity is exerted by the mould temperature. Tensile properties and porosity levels were measured on a demonstration part produced with different slurry ingate velocities. Results showed similar strength levels among all thixocast samples, a strong correlation between elongation and pore volume fraction and porosity levels much lower than the typical figure for permanent mould or die cast Al-Si alloys. Finally, thermomechanical fatigue tests results were much more favorable to the semi-solid material when compared with the conventionally cast alloy, a result attributed to lower porosity, spheroidal shape of the Al-alpha phase, and refined Si eutectic particles. alpha 2007 Elsevier B.V.
