Fluorene and thiophene units are commonly used in polymeric materials for electro-optical applications. Due to differences in reactivity, the final composition of polymers containing these components often differs from that used in their preparation. This contribution describes the synthesis of PPV type terpolymers built by fluorene, phenylene and thiophene units and their quantification by CPMAS NMR. The similarity of the three aromatic co-monomers makes it difficult to separate the analytical responses that would allow quantification of each copolymer unit in the chain. In this sense, we show that the combination of dipolar dephased CPMAS with radiofrequency ramp and proper spectral treatment allows a good estimation and quantification of the copolymer constitution. A copolymer comprising 1,4-diketopyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DPP) and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene moieties, PDBT-co-TT, shows high hole mobility of up to 0.94 cm2 V-1 s-1 in organic thin-film transistors. The strong intermolecular interactions originated from π-π stacking and donor-acceptor interaction lead to the formation of interconnected polymer networks having an ordered lamellar structure, which have established highly efficient pathways for charge carrier transport.

A donor-acceptor polymer semiconductor, PDQT, comprising diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) and β-unsubstituted quaterthiophene (QT) for organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) is reported. This polymer forms ordered layer-by-layer lamellar packing with an edge-on orientation in thin films even without thermal annealing. The strong intermolecular interactions arising from the fused aromatic DPP moiety and the DPP-QT donor-acceptor interaction facilitate the spontaneous self-assembly of the polymer chains into close proximity and form a large π-π overlap, which are favorable for intermolecular charge hopping. The well-interconnected crystalline grains form efficient intergranular charge transport pathways. The desirable chemical, electronic, and morphological structures of PDQT bring about high hole mobility of up to 0.97 cm2/(V·s) in OTFTs with polymer thin films annealed at a mild temperature of 100 °C and similarly high mobility of 0.89 cm2/(V·s) for polymer thin films even without thermal annealing.

A fused aromatic furan-substituted diketopyrrolopyrrole and novel diphenylfumaronitrile conjugated building blocks are used for the synthesis of an alternating copolymer (DPFN-DPPF) via Suzuki polycondensation. In this paper, the first attempt to use the diphenylfumaronitrile building block for the synthesis of conjugated polymer is described. The number-average and weight-average molecular weights calculated for DPFN-DPPF are 20?661 and 66?346 g mol-1, respectively. The optical bandgap calculated for DPFN-DPPF is 1.53 eV whereas the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) value calculated by photoelectron spectroscopy in air (PESA) is 5.50 eV. The calculated HOMO value is lower, which is suitable for stable organic electronic devices. DPFN-DPPF polymer is used as an active layer in bottom-contact bottom-gate organic thin-film transistor devices and the thin film exhibits a hole mobility of 0.20 cm2 V-1 s-1 in air.

We have studied the lamellar orientation in thin films of a model diblock copolymer, symmetric poly(styrene)-b-poly(L-lactide) (PS-PLLA), in the melt state on supported silicon wafer surface. In this system, while the PLLA block prefers to wet the polymer/substrate interface, the polymer/air as well as polymer/polymer interface is neutral for both blocks due to the similar surface energies of PS and PLLA in melt state. Our results demonstrate that the interplay of the interfaces during phase separation results in a series of structures before approaching the equilibrium state. Lamellar orientation of thin films with different initial film thicknesses at different annealing stages has been investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It is found that in the early stage (annealing time t < 10 min), the polymer/substrate interface dominates the structure evolution, leading to a parallel lamellar structure with holes or islands formed depending on the initial film thickness. Later on, the neutral air interface becomes important and leads to a transition of lamellar orientation from parallel to perpendicular. It is interesting to see that for films with thickness h > 2L, where L is the bulk lamellar period, the lamellar orientation transition can occur independently in different parallel lamellar domains due to the neutrality of polymer/polymer interface.

The effect of crystallization on the lamellar orientation of poly( styrene)-b-poly(L-lactide) (PS-PLLA) semicrystalline diblock copolymer in thin films has been investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In the melt state, microphase separation leads to a symmetric wetting structure with PLLA blocks located at both polymer/substrate and polymer/air interfaces. The lamellar period is equal to the long period L in bulk determined by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Symmetric wetting structure formed in the melt state provides a model structure to study the crystallization of PLLA monolayer tethered on glassy (T-c < T-g,T-PS) or rubber (T-c > T-g,T-PS) PS substrate. In both cases, it is found that the crystallization of PLLA results in a "sandwich" structure with amorphous PS layer located at both folding surfaces. For T-c <= T-g,T- PS, the crystallization induces a transition of the lamellar orientation from parallel to perpendicular to substrate in between and front of the crystals. In addition, the depletion of materials around the crystals leads to the formation of holes of 1/2 L, leaving the adsorbed monolayer exposure at the bottom of the holes.

We focus this work on the theoretical investigation of the block-copolymer poly [oxyoctyleneoxy-(2,6-dimethoxy-1,4phenylene-1,2-ethinylene-phenanthrene-2,4diyl) named as LaPPS19, recently proposed for optoelectronic applications. We used for that a variety of methods, from molecular mechanics to quantum semiempirical techniques (AMI, ZINDO/S-CIS). Our results show that as expected isolated LaPPS19 chains present relevant electron localization over the phenanthrene group. We found, however, that LaPPS19 could assemble in a pi-stacked form, leading to impressive interchain interaction; the stacking induces electronic delocalization between neighbor chains and introduces new states below the phenanthrene-related absorption; these results allowed us to associate the red-shift of the absorption edge, seen in the experimental results, to spontaneous pi-stack aggregation of the chains. In this paper we describe the electrosynthesis of poly[(2-bromo-5-hexyloxy- 1,4-phenylenevinylene)-co-(1,4-phenylenevinylene)] (BHPPV-co-PPV), a novel conducting copolymer, and its application as active layer of a chemiresistive gas sensor suitable for quantification of ethanol present in ethanol-gasoline mixtures normally present in the fuel tanks of flex-fuel vehicles. This information is crucial for the smooth operation of the engine since it permits optimal air:fuel ratio regulation. The sensor consists of an interdigitated electrode coated with a thin polymer film doped with dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid. On exposure to fuel vapours at room temperature, the device presents a linear correlation between its electrical conductance and the ethanol concentration in the fuel. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. We compare the photoemission and electron energy loss spectra of crystalline poly(vinylidene-fluoride with trifluoroethylene: 70%: 30%), P(VDF–TrFE), films, fabricated by the Langmuir–Blodgett technique and annealed in vacuum, with in situ thermally evaporated films of poly(vinylidene-fluoride) (PVDF) in vacuum. The electronic structure and vibrational modes of the short chain PVDF films compare well with the crystalline P(VDF–TrFE) films indicating that vacuum annealed films prepared ex situ are free of significant surface contamination once vacuum annealed. The electronic structure for the short chain PVDF films exhibits, however, different temperature dependence than the crystalline P(VDF–TrFE) films. PACS: 68.47.Mn; 71.20.Rv; 63.22.+m; 73.22.-f

The synthesis and structural characterization of a europium complexed fluorene-bipyridine copolymer are described. A level of ion insertion of 80% in molar basis was achieved, and theoretical calculations showed that it required a twist of 179 degrees (49 kJ) between the pyridine units. Spectroscopy data showed that no electronic coupling between the main backbone and the complexation sites had occurred, but these hindered the interchain aggregation observed in the non complexed polymer. Preliminary electroluminescence studies showed that the EL and PL spectra are consistent, and that the ion had a trapping effect in the charge transport. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A template-based lamination technique for the manufacture of ferroelectrets from uniform electret films was recently reported. In the present work, this technique is used to prepare similar ferroelectret structures from low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films and from fluoro-ethylene-propylene (FEP) copolymer films. A comparative analysis of the pressure-, temperature-, and frequency-dependent piezoelectric properties has been performed on the two ferroelectret systems. It is observed that the FEP ferroelectrets exhibit better piezoelectric responses and are thermally more stable. The difference between the piezoelectric d(33) coefficients of the two ferroelectret systems is partially explained here by their different elastic moduli. The anti-resonance peaks of both structures have been investigated by means of dielectric resonance spectroscopy and electroacoustic sound-pressure measurements. A difference of more than 10 kHz is observed between the anti-resonance frequencies of the two ferroelectret systems.

Since conjugated polymers, i.e. polymers with spatially extended pi-bonding system have offered unique physical properties, unobtainable for conventional polymers, significant research efforts directed to better understanding of their chemistry, physics and engineering have been undertaken in the past two and half decades. In this thesis we discuss the synthesis, characterisation and investigation of conjugated semiconducting organic materials for electronic applications. Owing to the versatile properties of metal-organic hybrid materials, there is significant promise that these materials can find use in optical or electronic devices in the future. In addressing this issue, the synthesis of bisthiazol-2-yl-amine (BTA) based polymers is attempted and their metallation is investigated. The focus of this work has been to examine whether the introduction of coordinating metal ions onto the polymer backbone can enhance the conductivity of the material. These studies can provide a basis for understanding the photophysical properties of metal-organic polymers based on BTA. In their neutral (undoped) form conjugated polymers are semiconductors and can be used as active components of plastics electronics such as polymer light-emitting diodes, polymer lasers, photovoltaic cells, field-effect transistors, etc. Toward this goal, it is an objective of the study to synthesize and characterize new classes of luminescent polymeric materials based on anthracene and phenanthrene moieties. A series of materials based on polyphenylenes and poly(phenyleneethynylene)s with 9,10-anthrylene subunits are not only presented but the synthesis and characterization of step-ladder and ladder poly(p-phenylene-alt-anthrylene)s containing 9,10-anthrylene building groups within the main chain are also explored. In a separate work, a series of soluble poly-2,7- and 3,6-phenanthrylenes are synthesized. This can enable us to do a systematic investigation into the optical and electronic properties of PPP-like versus PPV-like. Besides, the self-organization of 3,6-linked macrocyclic triphenanthrylene has been investigated by 2D wide-angle X-ray scattering experiments performed on extruded filaments in solution and in the bulk. Additionally, from the concept that donor-acceptor materials can induce efficient electron transfer, the covalent incorporation of perylene tetracarboxydiimide (PDI) into one block of a poly(2,7-carbazole) (PCz)-based diblock copolymer and 2,5-pyrrole based on push-pull type material are achieved respectively.
