Ontology-based Classification of News in an Electronic Newspaper

This paper deals with the classification of news items in ePaper, a prototype system of a future personalized newspaper service on a mobile reading device. The ePaper system aggregates news items from various news providers and delivers to each subscribed user (reader) a personalized electronic newspaper, utilizing content-based and collaborative filtering methods. The ePaper can also provide users "standard" (i.e., not personalized) editions of selected newspapers, as well as browsing capabilities in the repository of news items. This paper concentrates on the automatic classification of incoming news using hierarchical news ontology. Based on this classification on one hand, and on the users' profiles on the other hand, the personalization engine of the system is able to provide a personalized paper to each user onto her mobile reading device.

Redes de conhecimento e significações e a divulgação científica em educação: o caso do Jornal Eletrônico Educação & Imagem

Esta pesquisa procura trazer para o campo da educação a discussão da divulgação científica, já bastante avançada em outras áreas de conhecimento. A proposta é abordar a temática em questão a partir da análise dos usos‟ de artigos escritos por professores/pesquisadores e publicados no Jornal Eletrônico Educação & Imagem, publicação vinculada ao Laboratório Educação e Imagem (Programa de Pós-graduação em Educação/Faculdade de Educação/Universidade de Estado do Rio de Janeiro), com a finalidade de compartilhar o que vem sendo produzido em pesquisas e práticas curriculares desenvolvidas em torno da relação imagens e educação. Este trabalho está relacionado àqueles que se desenvolvem nos estudos nos/dos/com os cotidianos, o que nos tem permitido compreender as múltiplas redes educativas nas relações conhecimentos e significados tecidas por múltiplos praticantes destas redes. Nos artigos enviados pelos professores ao jornal, observamos que, mesmo seguindo as orientações dos materiais curriculares indicados pelas secretarias, professores e alunos estão em um contexto de experiência curricular cotidiana e os usos que fazem destes materiais de acordo com as suas próprias práticas, que vivenciam dentrofora das escolas, lhes possibilitam que teçam permanentemente os currículos. Em outras palavras, dentro destes espaçostempos há muitos currículos sendo criados. Assim, ao dialogar com os trabalhos de Certeau, Martin-Barbero, Boaventura de Souza Santos, Nestor Canclini, Pierre Lévy e Carlos Vogt esta pesquisa vem pensando as táticas dos usuários de um jornal eletrônico, de professores a pesquisadores, na criação de novos conhecimentos a partir do diálogo mediado por este artefato cultural. Desejo, com a pesquisa desenvolvida, mostrar como cotidiadianamente tem sido tecidas relações entre usuários/professores/pesquisadores por meio do Jornal Eletrônico Educação & Imagem, ultrapassando dessa forma a idéia subjacente à expressão divulgação científica‟, que sugere uma unitelaridade e/ou, no mínimo, uma segregação entre cientistas e todo o resto (CERTEAU, 1994). Ao fazerem usos‟ diversos e imprevisíveis dessa mídia, esses usuários/professores/pesquisadores põem os conhecimentos produzidos para circular, possibilitando apropriações, ressignificações e criação de outros conhecimentos em/nas redes. Por isto, consideramos que é mais aplicável à área o termo circulação científica. Com isso, queremos indicar que o desenvolvimento de pesquisas com os cotidianos exige contatos constantes e de diversas ordens entre universidades e escolas para a compreensão dos múltiplos currículos existentes nas práticas das tantas escolas dos diversos sistemas educativos.

An Ontology- Content-based Filtering Method

Traditional content-based filtering methods usually utilize text extraction and classification techniques for building user profiles as well as for representations of contents, i.e. item profiles. These methods have some disadvantages e.g. mismatch between user profile terms and item profile terms, leading to low performance. Some of the disadvantages can be overcome by incorporating a common ontology which enables representing both the users' and the items' profiles with concepts taken from the same vocabulary. We propose a new content-based method for filtering and ranking the relevancy of items for users, which utilizes a hierarchical ontology. The method measures the similarity of the user's profile to the items' profiles, considering the existing of mutual concepts in the two profiles, as well as the existence of "related" concepts, according to their position in the ontology. The proposed filtering algorithm computes the similarity between the users' profiles and the items' profiles, and rank-orders the relevant items according to their relevancy to each user. The method is being implemented in ePaper, a personalized electronic newspaper project, utilizing a hierarchical ontology designed specifically for classification of News items. It can, however, be utilized in other domains and extended to other ontologies.

Straight to the source : an exploratory study of Australia's regional newspaper journalists' checks on validity and accuracy of sources

This paper reports on an exploratory study that examined whether journalists
undertake the vital role of checking the validity and accuracy of information
supplied to them in media releases. It also monitored how much information
journalists used from press releases in their published work. The study followed Gandy's information subsidy theory by surveying 10 local government media relations officers who regularly issued media releases via
electronic mail or facsimile to a sample of 14 rural/regional newspapers. The data analysed found that rural/regional journalists were not adequately verifying information supplied in media releases and using a significant amount of this information verbatim.

A funny thing happened on the way to the forum: Electronic discussion and foreign language learning

Amongst the opportunities for cross-cultural contact created by the burgeoning use of the Internet are those provided by electronic discussion lists. This study looks at what happens when language students venture out of the classroom (virtual or otherwise) to participate in on-line discussion groups with native speakers. Responses to messages and commentary by moderators and other participants on the (in) appropriateness of contributions allow us to determine what constitutes successful participation and to make suggestions regarding effective teaching strategies for this medium. A case study examines the threads started by four anglophone students of French when they post messages to a forum on the Web site of the French newspaper Le Monde. Investigation of these examples points to the ways in which electronic discussion inflects and is inflected by cultural and generic expectations. We suggest that successful participation on Internet fora depends on awareness of such cultural and generic mores and an ability to work within and/or with them. Teachers therefore need to find ways in which students can be sensitized to such issues so that their participation in such electronic discussion is no longer seen as linguistic training, but as engagement with a cultural practice.
