We have analyzed the null-plane canonical structure of Podolsky's electromagnetic theory. As a theory that contains higher order derivatives in the Lagrangian function, it was necessary to redefine the canonical momenta related to the field variables. We were able to find a set of first and second-class constraints, and also to derive the field equations of the system. Following the Dirac's technique for constrained systems we performed a detailed analysis of the constraint structure of Podolsky's electromagnetic theory on the null-plane coordinates. The null plane gauge condition was extended to second order theories and appropriate boundary conditions were imposed to guarantee the uniqueness of the inverse of the constraints matrix of the system. Finally, we determined the generalized Dirac brackets of the independent dynamical variables. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

In this work we develop the Hamilton - Jacobi formalism to study the Podolsky electromagnetic theory on the null-plane coordinates. We calculate the generators of the Podolsky theory and check the integrability conditions. Appropriate boundary conditions are introduced to assure uniqueness of the Green functions associated to the differential operators. Non-involutive constraints in the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism are eliminated by constructing their respective generalized brackets. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

Fredholm integral equations of the first kind are the mathematical model common to several electromagnetic, optical and acoustical inverse scattering problems. In most of these problems the solution must be positive in order to satisfy physical plausibility. We consider ill-posed deconvolution problems and investigate several linear regularization algorithms which provide positive approximate solutions at least in the absence of errors on the data.

We consider a simple (but fully three-dimensional) mathematical model for the electromagnetic exploration of buried, perfect electrically conducting objects within the soil underground. Moving an electric device parallel to the ground at constant height in order to generate a magnetic field, we measure the induced magnetic field within the device, and factor the underlying mathematics into a product of three operations which correspond to the primary excitation, some kind of reflection on the surface of the buried object(s) and the corresponding secondary excitation, respectively. Using this factorization we are able to give a justification of the so-called sampling method from inverse scattering theory for this particular set-up.

Expressions for the phase change Φ suffered by microwaves when transmitted through an artificial dielectric composed of metallic discs arranged in a three-dimensional array have been derived with different approaches as follows (i) molecular theory, (ii) electromagnetic theory and (iii) transmission line theory. The phase change depends on the distance t that the wave traverses inside the dielectric and also the spacing d between centre to centre of any two adjacent discs in the three principal directions. Molecular theory indicates Φ as an increasing function of t, whereas, the other two theories indicate Φ as an oscillatory function of t. The transmission line theory also exhibits Φ to be real or imaginary depending on t. Experimental values of Φ as a function of t have been obtained with the help of a microwave (3·2 cms wavelength) interferometer for two dielectrics having d as 1·91 cms and 2·22 cms respectively.

In this article, we investigate the performance of a volume integral equation code on BlueGene/L system. Volume integral equation (VIE) is solved for homogeneous and inhomogeneous dielectric objects for radar cross section (RCS) calculation in a highly parallel environment. Pulse basis functions and point matching technique is used to convert the volume integral equation into a set of simultaneous linear equations and is solved using parallel numerical library ScaLAPACK on IBM's distributed-memory supercomputer BlueGene/L by different number of processors to compare the speed-up and test the scalability of the code.

With the advances of techniques for RCS reduction, it has become practical to develop aircraft which are invisible to modern day radars. In order to detect such low visible targets it is necessary to explore other phenomenon that contributes to the scattering of incident electromagnetic wave. It is well known from the developments from the clear air scattering using RASS induced acoustic wave could be used to create dielectric constant fluctuation. The scattering from these fluctuations rather than from the aircraft have been observed to enhance the RCS of clear air, under the condition when the incident EM wave is half of the acoustic wave, the condition of Bragg scattering would be met and RCS would be enhanced. For detecting low visibility targets which are at significant distance away from the main radar, inducement of EM fluctuation from acoustic source collocated with the acoustic source is infeasible. However the flow past aircraft produces acoustic disturbances around the aircraft can be exploited to detect low visibility targets. In this paper numerical simulation for RCS enhancement due to acoustic disturbances is presented. In effect, this requires the solution of scattering from 3D inhomogeneous complex shaped bodies. In this volume surface integral equation (VSIE) is used to compute the RCS from fluctuation introduced through the acoustic disturbances. Though the technique developed can be used to study the scattering from radars of any shape and acoustic disturbances of any shape. For illustrative condition, enhancement due to the Bragg scattering are shown to improve the RCS by nearly 30dB, for air synthetic sinusoidal acoustic variation profile for a spherical scattering volume
