In this work carbon supported Pd nanoparticles were prepared and used as electrocatalysts for formic acid electrooxidation fuel cells. The influence of some relevant parameters such as the nominal Pt loading, the Nafion/total solids ratio as well as the Pd loading towards formic acid electrooxidation was evaluated using gold supported catalytic layer electrodes which were prepared using a similar methodology to that employed in the preparation of conventional catalyst coated membranes (CCM). The results obtained show that, for constant Pd loading, the nominal Pd loading and the Nafion percentage on the catalytic layer do not play an important role on the resulting electrocatalytic properties. The main parameter affecting the electrocatalytic activity of the electrodes seems to be the Pd loading, although the resulting activity is not directly proportional to the increased Pd loading. Thus, whereas the Pd loading is multiplied by a factor of 10, the activity is only twice which evidences an important decrease in the Pd utilization. In fact, the results obtained suggest the active layer is the outer one being clearly independent of the catalytic layer thickness. Finally, catalyst coated membranes with Pd catalyst loadings of 0.1, 0.5 and 1.2 mg cm-2 were also tested in a breathing direct formic acid fuel cell.

The morphology of nanocrystalline Co3O4 synthesized through microwave irradiation of a solution of a cobalt complex is found to depend reproducibly on the conditions of synthesis and, in particular, on the composition of the solvent used. Despite the rapidity of the process, oriented aggregation occurs under certain conditions, depending on solvent composition. Annealing the oriented samples leads to microstructures with significant porosity, rendering the material suitable as electrodes for electrochemical capacitors. Electrochemical analysis of the oxide samples was carried out in 0.1M Na2SO4 electrolyte vs. Ag/AgCl electrode. A stable specific capacitance of 221 F/g was measured for a meso-porous sample displaying oriented aggregation. Stability of these oxide materials were checked for longer charge-discharge cycling. NiFeCr nanoparticles with a Ni-rich composition were synthesized using a wet chemical synthesis technique. As-synthesized nanoparticles were crystalline with an average size of 6.8 +/- 2.5 nm. For electrochemical analysis, as-synthesized nanoparticles were mixed with epoxy and coated over a mild steel substrate. Electrochemical measurements exhibited a very high polarization resistance and very low corrosion current for the nanoparticle-epoxy coated sample illustrating high resistance of the NiFeCr nanoparticle-epoxy coating towards highly corrosive media.

In this work, electrochemical oxidation of albendazole (ABZ) was carried out using a glassy carbon-rotating disk electrode. Development of electroanalytical methodology for ABZ quantification in pharmaceutical formulations was also proposed by using linear sweep voltammetric technique. Electrochemical oxidation is observed for ABZ at E 1/2 = 0.99:V vs. Ag/AgCl sat, when an anodic wave is observed. Kinetic parameters obtained for ABZ oxidation exhibited a standard heterogeneous rate constant for the electrodic process equal to (1.51 ± 0.07) ± 10 -5:cm:s -1, with a αn a value equal to 0.76. Limiting current dependence against ABZ concentration exhibited linearity on 5.0 ± 10 -5 to 1.0 ± 10 -2:mol:l -1 range, being obtained a detection limit of 2.4 ± 10 -5:mol:l -1. Proposed methodology was applied to ABZ quantification in pharmaceutical formulations. © 2005 Elsevier SAS. All rights reserved.

The reduction of guanine was studied by microelectrode voltammetry in the room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) N-hexyltriethylammonium bis (trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide [N6,2,2,2][N(Tf)2], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorosphosphate [C4mim][PF6], N-butyl-N-methyl-pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide [C4mpyrr][N(Tf)2], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide [C4mim][N(Tf)2], N-butyl-N-methyl-pyrrolidinium dicyanamide [C4mpyrr][N(NC)2] and tris(P-hexyl)-tetradecylphosphonium trifluorotris(pentafluoroethyl)phosphate [P14,6,6,6][FAP] on a platinum microelectrode. In [N6,2,2,2][NTf2] and [P14,6,6,6][FAP], but not in the other ionic liquids studied, guanine reduction involves a one-electron, diffusion-controlled process at very negative potential to produce an unstable radical anion, which is thought to undergo a dimerization reaction, probably after proton abstraction from the cation of the ionic liquid. The rate of this subsequent reaction depends on the nature of the ionic liquid, and it is faster in the ionic liquid [P14,6,6,6][FAP], in which the formation of the resulting dimer can be voltammetrically monitored at less negative potentials than required for the reduction of the parent molecule. Adenine showed similar behaviour to guanine but the pyrimidines thymine and cytosine did not; thymine was not reduced at potentials less negative than required for solvent (RTIL) decomposition while only a poorly defined wave was seen for cytosine. The possibility for proton abstraction from the cation in [N6,2,2,2][NTf2] and [P14,6,6,6][FAP] is noted and this is thought to aid the electrochemical dimerization process. The resulting rapid reaction is thought to shift the reduction potentials for guanine and adenine to lower values than observed in RTILs where the scope for proton abstraction is not present. Such shifts are characteristic of so-called EC processes where reversible electron transfer is followed by a chemical reaction. © 2009 Elsevier B.V.
Electrochemical oxidation of wastewater containing aromatic amines using a flow electrolytic reactor
Resumo:
Aromatic amines are environmental pollutants and represent one of the most important classes of industrial and natural chemicals. Some types of complex effluents containing these chemical species, mainly those originated from chemicals plants are not fully efficiently treated by conventional processes. In this work, the use of electrochemical technology through an electrolytic pilot scale flow reactor is considered for treatment of wastewater of a chemical industry manufacturer of antioxidant and anti-ozonant substances used in rubber. Experimental results showed that was possible to remove between 65% and 95% of apparent colour and chemical oxygen demand removal between 30 and 90% in 60 min of treatment, with energy consumption rate from 26 kWh m-3 to 31 kWh m-3. Absorbance, total organic carbon and toxicity analyses resulted in no formation of toxic by-products. The results suggest that the presented electrochemical process is a suitable method for treating this type of wastewater, mainly when pre-treated by aeration. The structural and electrochemical consequences of hydrogenating Copper N2S2 Schiff base macrocycles
Resumo:
A series of cis and trans tetradentate copper macrocyclic complexes, of ring size fourteen - sixteen, which employ amine and thioether donor groups are reported. Apart from 5,6,15,16-bisbenzo-8,13-diaza-1,4-dithia-cyclohexadecane copper(I) (cis-[Cu(H4NbuSen)]+) all of the complexes are obtained in the copper(II) form. Crystallographic analysis shows that the copper(II) complexes all adopt a distorted planar geometry around the copper. In contrast, cis-[Cu(H4NbuSen)]+ is found to adopt a distorted tetrahedral geometry. The complexes were subjected to electrochemical analysis in water and acetonitrile. The effect of the solvent, positions of the donor atoms (cis/trans) on E1/2 is discussed as is the comparison of the electrochemical behaviour of these complexes with their parent Schiff base macrocycles.

We demonstrate aqueous phase biosynthesis of phase-pure metallic copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) using a silver resistant bacterium Morganella morganii. This is particularly important considering that there has been no report that demonstrates biosynthesis and stabilization of pure copper nanoparticles in the aqueous phase. Electrochemical analysis of bacterial cells exposed to Cu2+ ions provides new insights into the mechanistic aspect of Cu2+ ion reduction within the bacterial cell and indicates a strong link between the silver and copper resistance machinery of bacteria in the context of metal ion reduction. The outcomes of this study take us a step closer towards designing rational strategies for biosynthesis of different metal nanoparticles using microorganisms.

Porous high surface area thin films of nanosheet-shaped monoclinic MoO 3 were deposited onto platinized Si substrates using patch antenna-based atmospheric microplasma processing. The films were characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical analysis. The electrochemical analysis shows original redox peaks and high charge capacity, and also indicates a reversible electrochemical behaviour particularly beneficial for applications in Li-ion batteries. SEM shows that the films are highly porous and consist of nanosheets 50-100 nm thick with surface dimensions in the micrometre range. HRTEM reveals that the MoO3 nanosheets consist of the monoclinic beta phase of MoO3. These intricate nanoarchitectures made of monoclinic MoO3 nanosheets have not been studied previously in the context of applications in Li-ion batteries and show superior structural and morphological features that enable effective insertion of Li ions.

Deposition of good quality thin films of Lithium Cobalt Oxide (LiCoO2), by sputtering is preceded by target conditioning, which dictates the surface composition, morphology and electrochemical performance of the deposited film. Sputtering from a Virgin target surface, results in films with excess of the more reactive elements. The concentration of these reactive elements in the films decreases until the system reaches a steady state after sufficient sputtering from the target. This paper discusses the deposition kinetics in terms of target conditioning of LiCoO2. The composition, morphology and texturing of deposited film during various hours of sputtering were analyzed using X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Field Emission Scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The compositional stability is not observed in the films formed during the initial hours or Sputtering from the fresh target, which becomes stable after several hours of sputtering. The Li and Co concentration in the Films deposited subsequently is found to be varying and possible causes are discussed. After the compositional stability is reached, electrochemical analysis of LiCoO2 thin films was performed, which shows a discharge capacity of 129 mu Ah/cm(2).
