Pollution on electrical insulators is one of the greatest causes of failure of substations subjected to high levels of salinity and environmental pollution. Considering leakage current as the main indicator of pollution on insulators, this paper focus on establishing the effect of the environmental conditions on the risk of failure due to pollution on insulators and determining the significant change in the magnitude of the pollution on the insulators during dry and humid periods. Hierarchical segmentation analysis was used to establish the effect of environmental conditions on the risk of failure due to pollution on insulators. The Kruskal-Wallis test was utilized to determine the significant changes in the magnitude of the pollution due to climate periods. An important result was the discovery that leakage current was more common on insulators during dry periods than humid ones. There was also a higher risk of failure due to pollution during dry periods. During the humid period, various temperatures and wind directions produced a small change in the risk of failure. As a technical result, operators of electrical substations can now identify the cause of an increase in risk of failure due to pollution in the area. The research provides a contribution towards the behaviour of the leakage current under conditions similar to those of the Colombian Caribbean coast and how they affect the risk of failure of the substation due to pollution.

The contamination of electrical insulators is one of the major contributors to the risk of operation outages in electrical substations, especially in coastal zones with high salinity levels and atmospheric pollution. By using the measurement of leakage-currents, which is one of the main indicators of contamination in insulators, this work seeks to the determine the correlation with climatic variables, such as ambient temperature, relative humidity, solar irradiance, atmospheric pressure, and wind speed and direction. The results obtained provide an input to the behaviour of the leakage current under atmospheric conditions that are particular to the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients and principal component analysis are utilised to determine the significant relationships among the different variables under consideration. The necessary information for the study was obtained via historical databases of both atmospheric variables and the leakage current measured in over a period of one year in a 220-kV potential transformer insulator. We identified the influencing factors of temperature, humidity, radiation, wind speed and direction on the magnitude of the leakage current as the most relevant.

While the implementation of the IEC 61850 standard has significantly enhanced the performance of communications in electrical substations, it has also increased the complexity of the system. Subsequently, these added elaborations have introduced new challenges in relation to the skills and tools required for the design, test and maintenance of 61850-compatible substations. This paper describes a practical experience of testing a protection relay using a non-conventional test equipment; in addition, it proposes a third party software technique to reveal the contents of the packets transferred on the substation network. Using this approach, the standard objects can be linked and interpreted to what the end-users normally see in the IED and test equipment proprietary software programs.

Environmental impacts of airports are similar to those of many industries, though their operations expand over a very large area. Most international impact assessment studies and environmental management programmes have been giving less focus on the impacts to soil and groundwater than desirable. This may be the result of the large attention given to air and noise pollution, relegating other environmental descriptors to a second role, even when the first are comparatively less relevant. One reason that contributes to such ‘‘biased’’ evaluation is the lack of systematic information about impacts to soil and groundwater from airport activities, something the present study intends to help correct. Results presented here include the review of over seven hundred documents and online databases, with the objective of obtaining the following information to support environmental studies: (i) which operations are responsible for chemical releases?; (ii) where are these releases located?; (iii) which contaminants of concern are released?; (iv) what are the associated environmental risks? Results showed that the main impacts occur as a result of fuel storage, stormwater runoff and drainage systems, fuel hydrant systems, fuel transport and refuelling, atmospheric deposition, rescue and fire fighting training areas, winter operations, electrical substations, storage of chemical products by airport owners or tenants, and maintenance of green areas. A new method for ranking environmental risks of organic substances, based on chemical properties, is proposed and applied. Results show that the contaminants with the highest risks are the perfluorochemicals, benzene, trichloroethylene and CCl4.

In a general way, in an electric power utility the current transformers (CT) are used to measurement and protection of transmission lines (TL) 1 The Power Line Carriers systems (PLC) are used for communication between electrical substations and transmission line protection. However, with the increasing use of optical fiber to communication (due mainly to its high data transmission rate and low signal-noise relation) this application loses potentiality. Therefore, other functions must be defined to equipments that are still in using, one of them is detecting faults (short-circuits) and transmission lines insulator strings damages 2. The purpose of this paper is to verify the possibility of using the path to the ground offered by the CTs instead of capacitive couplings / capacitive potential transformers to detect damaged insulators, since the current transformers are always present in all transmission lines (TL's) bays. To this a comparison between this new proposal and the PLC previous proposed system 2 is shown, evaluating the economical and technical points of view. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper proposes a filter based on a general regression neural network and a moving average filter, for preprocessing half-hourly load data for short-term multinodal load forecasting, discussed in another paper. Tests made with half-hourly load data from nine New Zealand electrical substations demonstrate that this filter is able to handle noise, missing data and abnormal data. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper are compared two methods of deploying electrical substations, conventional type, when installed at open areas (Air Insulated Switchgear - AIS), and compact gas-insulated (Gas Insulated Switchgear - GIS) when installed inside buildings. With the expansion of urban centers, areas available for deployment of conventional substations become increasingly difficult to find in these locations. Also due to speculation in urban areas, it becomes feasible to install Gas Insulated Switchgear. This paper presents and evaluates criteria with advantages and disadvantages for application of the two methodologies, aiming to assist in decisionmaking moment of choice in deployment of Electric Power Substations in two scenarios. It is expected that at the end of this work, the criteria evaluated assist in this decision making

ABSTRACT Electrical networks are evolving to “Smart Grids”. Smart Grids are composed of electrical substations that in turn are composed of devices called IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Devices). The design of IEDs is defined by the IEC 61850 standard, which also specifies a Substation Configuration Languaje (SCL) used to define the configuration of substations and their IEDs. Nowadays, this international standard is not only used to design properly IEDs and guarantee their interoperability, but it is also used to design different electrical network devices, such as, smart meters. However, although the use of this standard is growing, its compression as well as its management, is still difficult due to its large volume of information and its level of detail. As a result, designing IEDs becomes a tedious task without a software support. As a consequence of this, in order to make easier the application of the IEC 61850 standard while designing IEDs, some software tools have been developed, such as: “Visual SCL”, “SCL Explorer” or “61850 SCLVisual Design Tool”. In particular, “61850 SCLVisual Design Tool” is a graphical tool used to make electrical substations models, and developed with the Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) and Epsilon Generative Modeling Technologies (GMT) by the research group SYST of the UPM. The aim of this project is to add a new functionality to “61850 Visual SCL DesignTool”. This new functionality consists of the automatic code generation of a substation configuration file according to the IEC 61850 standard. This file is called SCD (Substation Configuration Description), and it is a XML file that follows a XSD (XML Schema Definition) that defines the Substation Configuration Language (SCL) of the IEC 61850. In order to develop this project, it is necessary to study the Substation Configuration Language (SCL), the domain-specific graphical languaje defined by the tool “61850 SCLVisual Design Tool”, the structure of a SCD file, and the Epsilon Generation Language (EGL) used for the automatic code generation from EMF models

The authors present a Cause-Effect fault diagnosis model, which utilises the Root Cause Analysis approach and takes into account the technical features of a digital substation. The Dempster/Shafer evidence theory is used to integrate different types of fault information in the diagnosis model so as to implement a hierarchical, systematic and comprehensive diagnosis based on the logic relationship between the parent and child nodes such as transformer/circuit-breaker/transmission-line, and between the root and child causes. A real fault scenario is investigated in the case study to demonstrate the developed approach in diagnosing malfunction of protective relays and/or circuit breakers, miss or false alarms, and other commonly encountered faults at a modern digital substation.

Advanced substation applications, such as synchrophasors and IEC 61850-9-2 sampled value process buses, depend upon highly accurate synchronizing signals for correct operation. The IEEE 1588 Precision Timing Protocol (PTP) is the recommended means of providing precise timing for future substations. This paper presents a quantitative assessment of PTP reliability using Fault Tree Analysis. Two network topologies are proposed that use grandmaster clocks with dual network connections and take advantage of the Best Master Clock Algorithm (BMCA) from IEEE 1588. The cross-connected grandmaster topology doubles reliability, and the addition of a shared third grandmaster gives a nine-fold improvement over duplicated grandmasters. The performance of BMCA mediated handover of the grandmaster role during contingencies in the timing system was evaluated experimentally. The 1 µs performance requirement of sampled values and synchrophasors are met, even during network or GPS antenna outages. Slave clocks are shown to synchronize to the backup grandmaster in response to degraded performance or loss of the main grandmaster. Slave disturbances are less than 350 ns provided the grandmaster reference clocks are not offset from one another. A clear understanding of PTP reliability and the factors that affect availability will encourage the adoption of PTP for substation time synchronization.
