Chemical substances used during biomechanical preparation of root canals can alter the composition of dentin surface and affect the interaction with restorative materials. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of a self-etching adhesive system to dentin irrigated with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty human third molars were sectioned 3 mm below the occlusal surface, polished with 600- to 1200-grit silicon carbide papers, and randomly divided into 3 groups: G1 (control): no irrigating solution; G2: 1% NaOCl; and G3: 1% NaOCl followed by the application of 17% EDTA. The specimens received the self-etching adhesive system (XENO III - Dentsply), restored with microhybrid composite resin (Z250 - 3M ESPE), sectioned and trimmed to create 4 hourglass-shaped slabs of each tooth. The slabs were tested in microtensile strength in a universal testing machine (Emic DL 2000) at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min until fracture. The results were analyzed statistically by ANOVA and Newman-Keuls test. RESULTS: Mean µTBS values and standard deviations in MPa were: G1 = 11.89 ± 4.22; G2 = 19.41 ± 5.32; G3 = 11.34 ± 4.73. 1% NaOCl increased the adhesive resistance significantly (p<0.001/F=22.5763). The application of 1% NaOCl/17% EDTA resulted in statistically similar µTBS to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: None of the irrigants affected negatively the µTBS of XENO III to dentin. The use of 1% NaOCl alone resulted in higher bond strength than the other treatments. The combination of 1% NaOCl and 17% EDTA produced similar bond strength to that of untreated dentin.

The formation of the Mn(III)/EDTA complex in a flow system with solenoid micro-pumps was exploited for fast manganese determination in freshwater. Manganese(II) was oxidized in a solid-phase reactor containing lead dioxide immobilized on polyester. Long pathlength spectrophotometry was exploited to increase sensitivity, aiming to reach the threshold limit established by environmental legislation. A linear response was observed from 25 to 1500 mu g L(-1), with a detection limit of 6 mu g L(-1) (99.7% confidence level). Sample throughput and coefficient of variation were 36 samples/h and 2.6% (n = 10), respectively. EDTA consumption and waste generation were estimated as 500 mu g and 3 mL per determination, respectively. The amount of Pb in the residue corresponds to 250 mu g per determination and a solid-phase reactor could be used for up to 1600 determinations. Adsorption in active charcoal avoided interferences caused by organic matter and the developed procedure was successfully applied for determination of manganese in freshwater samples. Results were in agreement with those attained by GFAAS at the 95% confidence level. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Plasma clearance of (51)Cr-EDTA ((51)Cr-EDTA-Cl) is an alternative method to evaluate glomerular filtration rate (GFR). This study aimed to investigate the concordance between (51)Cr-EDTA-Cl and renal inulin clearance (In-Cl) in renal transplant recipients as well to determine the repeatability of (51)Cr-EDTA-Cl in kidney donors. Forty four kidney recipients and 22 kidney donors were enrolled. Simultaneous measurements of (51)Cr-EDTA-Cl and In-Cl were performed. A single dose of 3.7MBq of (51)Cr-EDTA was injected and the plasma disappearance curve was created by taking blood samples at 2, 4, 6 and 8 h after injection. Bland and Altman statistical approach was used to quantify the agreement between In-Cl and (51)Cr-EDTA-Cl and to determine the better concordance between all possibilities of measure for the (51)Cr-EDTA-Cl. The mean of In-Cl was 44.5 +/- 17.9 ml/min/1.73 m(2). There was a positive correlation between In-Cl and all possible measurements of (51)Cr-EDTA-Cl. (51)Cr-EDTA-Cl with two samples taken at 4 and 8 h or at 4 and 6 h presenting the narrow limits of agreement and a difference (bias) of 2.8 and 2.7 ml/min, respectively. Two plasma sampling for (51)Cr-EDTA-Cl was a reliable method to measure GFR compared with In-Cl and comprises a suitable method to be used in kidney transplanted patients.

Objective: The physiological role of parathormone (PTH) in the maintenance of bone mass in humans has not been fully defined. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate basal and EDTA-stimulated PTH levels in Young women (Group Y = 30.9 years, N = 7) and in women in late menopause (Group M = 64.7 years, N = 7) and their relationship to bone mineral density. Methods: The PTH secretion test was performed by induction of hypocalcemia through intravenous administration of EDTA for 2 h. Blood samples were collected every 10 min and used for ionic calcium and PTH measurements. During the basal period, an additional sample was collected for the determination of osteocalcin, FSH, and estradiol. A sample of early morning second voided urine was collected for analysis of deoxypiridinoline and creatinine Lis well as bone mass density (BMD) was determined by dual X-ray energy absorptiometry (DEXA). Results: The aged patients presented lower femoral BMD (Y = 0.860 g/cm(2) vs. M = 0.690 g/cm(2), P < 0.01), With four of them having a T score lower than - 2.5 S.D. Basal, and during the EDTA infusion, PTH values were similar in both groups. However, among aged volunteers, the rise in PTH levels was higher for subjects with normal bone mass (NM: peak = 236 pg/ml) than for subjects with osteoporosis (OM: peak = 134.4 pg/ml). Conclusions: The present results suggest that PTH can have a modulating effect on the rate of bone loss during late menopause. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Objective. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of different volumes of 17% EDTA for final rinse on smear layer removal on the different areas of the root canal. Study design. Forty single-rooted teeth were instrumented using rotary instruments. The teeth were divided into 3 test groups according to the EDTA volume for final rinse (5 mL, 10 mL, 15 mL) and 1 control group (10 mL of 1% sodium hypochlorite). The roots were axially split into halves, and the smear layer removal from the canals was determined under scanning electron microscope. The data were analyzed using Kruskal Wallis and Dunn tests. Results. The 3 experimental groups showed no statistical difference (P > .05); however, when the test groups were compared to the control group statistically significant differences were found (P < .01). The root canal wall surfaces of teeth in the control group showed the presence of heavy smear layer through the entire length of the root canals. The other groups showed mainly smear layer-free surfaces or a small amount of debris. When coronal, middle and apical thirds were compared, there was no statistically significant difference (P > .05). Conclusions. Based on the results, it appears that a final rinse with 5 mL of EDTA per canal provides good smear layer removal, with root canal walls free of debris and mostly open dentinal tubules in all areas.

Monoclonal antibodies (MABs) ivere produced against an etbylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) extract of Leptospira interrogans serovar icterohaemorrhagiae being characterized by gel precipitation as IgM and IgG (IgGl and IgG2b). The EDTA extract was detected as several bands by silver staining in SDS-PAGE. In the Western blot the bands around 20 KDa reacted with a monoclonal antibody, 47B4D6, and was oxidized by periodate and was not digested by pronase, suggesting that the determinant is of carbohydrate nature, lmmunocytochemistry, using colloidal gold labeling, showed that an EDTA extract determinant recognized by monoclonal antibody 47B4D6, is localized under the outer envelope of serovar icterohaemorrhagiae. Hoe AIAB raised against the EDTA extract was not able to protect hamsters from lethal challenge with virulent homologous leptospires.

This paper describes the determination of exchangeable calcium and magnesium in soil by using ethylenediamine tetracetic acid, after the separation of the principals interferents (iron, aluminum, manganese and phosphate) by using both ammonium hidroxide and ammonium sulfide in only one operation. In order to compare the chelometric and the permanganometric methods for determining exchangeable calcium, five replications of nine soils were analysed by both methods. The accuracy of the determination of exchangeable magnesium in soil was evalueted by means of the recovered magnesium, when the proposed method was applied. The data obtained in both studies allowed to conclude that the technique proposed is good and the accuracy is satisfactory.

The bacteriophage life cycle has an important role in Shiga toxin (Stx) expression. The induction of Shiga toxin-encoding phages (Stx phages) increases toxin production as a result of replication of the phage genome, and phage lysis of the host cell also provides a means of Stx toxin to exit the cell. Previous studies suggested that prophage induction might also occur in the absence of SOS response, independently of RecA.

Cr(III) slowly forms a violet complex with EDTA at pH 2.5-5.0 under normal conditions. The complex formation can be accelerated by irradiating the reacting mixture with microwave energy. The complex Cr(III)-EDTA is completely formed within 3 minutes of microwave irradiation and followed by a simple and rapid method for spectrophotometric determination of chromium. The method may be successfully applied to determination of chromium in catalyst.

The chelating agent EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is a compound of massive use world wide with household and industrial applications, being one of the anthropogenic compounds with highest concentrations in inland European waters. In this review, the applications of EDTA and its behavior once it has been released into the environment are described. At a laboratory scale, degradation of EDTA has been achieved; however, in natural environments studies detect poor biodegradability. It is concluded that EDTA behaves as a persistent substance in the environment and that its contribution to heavy metals bioavailability and remobilization processes in the environment is a major concern.
