Os sistemas de monitoramento utilizando diatomceas foram desenvolvidos, em sua maioria, para monitorar os efeitos da poluio orgnica e da eutrofizao, adotando como parmetros de referncia a demanda biolgica de oxignio aps cinco dias e a concentrao de fsforo total. Entretanto, vrios fatores naturais tm sido apontados como causadores de variao na composio destas comunidades em rios. Por isso, grandes mudanas estruturais no provam necessariamente a hiptese de que tenha ocorrido algum evento poluidor. Neste contexto, a partir da relao entre a estrutura da comunidade de diatomceas epilticas da microbacia do arroio Schmidt, RS, Brasil, mudanas na qualidade da gua e alteraes fsicas do meio, como fluxo, sombreamento riprio, largura e profundidade, objetivou-se colher subsdios para aplicao em programas de manejo e conservao de ecossistemas aquáticos. Durante os meses de janeiro e fevereiro de 2004, foram realizadas quatro excurses cientficas a seis estaes, totalizando 24 amostragens, para medio das seguintes variveis: condutividade eltrica, oxignio dissolvido em saturao, pH, turbidez, demanda biolgica de oxignio em cinco dias (DBO5), demanda qumica de oxignio (DQO), fsforo total, nitrato, slidos totais dissolvidos, slidos suspensos, slica, profundidade de submerso do substrato, velocidade da correnteza, dimetro dos seixos, largura do rio e sombreamento em funo da vegetao ripria. Para as anlises qualitativas e quantitativas das diatomceas epilticas, uma rea de 25 cm2 foi raspada de cinco replicatas O material foi oxidado com dicromato de potssio, cido sulfrico e clordrico para confeco de lminas permanentes. Padres de distribuio e abundncia das espcies foram explorados atravs da Anlise de Espcies Indicadoras e os fatores ambientais responsveis por esta distribuio foram evidenciados pela Anlise de Correspondncia Cannica. Os resultados confirmaram a preferncia de Cymbella e Encyonema por guas lentas e elevada luminosidade, bem como a adaptabilidade de Cocconeis ao sombreamento. Nitzschia acicularis, Surirella tenera e Planothidium rupestoides revelaram-se indicadoras de ambientes meso-eutrficos. Encyonema perpusilum destacou-se no habitat oligo/- mesossaprbico, e Sellaphora pupula no stio de maior concentrao de eletrlitos. Pelo cruzamento das respostas das espcies saturao de oxignio, DBO5, DQO, condutividade, fsforo total, slidos totais dissolvidos e turbidez, foi possvel estabelecer dois grupos sinalizadores de qualidade: Achnanthes sp. 3, Cocconeis fluviatilis, Navicula angusta, Nitzschia acicularis, Tryblionella victoriae, Pinnularia cf. obscura, Planothidium rupestoides, Sellaphora pupula, Stenopterobia sp. e Surirella tenera, relacionadas com maior impacto antropognico, e Achnanthes sp. 2, Encyonema perpusilum, Geissleria aikenensis, Luticola goeppertiana, Navicula symmetrica e Nitzschia amphibia, referindo-se a ambientes mais oxigenados, pouco mineralizados e com reduzidos teores de compostos orgnicos. Estas informaes tambm constituem subsdios para estudos paleolimnolgicos envolvendo a reconstituio de paleoambientes (e.g. maior abundncia de Cymbella indicando ambientes lnticos) e a concentrao de paleonutrientes (e.g. Nitzschia acicularis designando perodos de maior eutrofizao).

A enorme complexidade dos sistemas ecolgicos tem sido uma grande barreira para a compreenso e o gerenciamento da problemtica ambiental. Neste sentido a modelagem matemtica uma valiosa ferramenta, devido a sua capacidade de organizar as informaes disponveis sobre estes sistemas e de fazer previses a seu respeito para diferentes condies. Desta forma a anlise de sistemas naturais vem sendo abordada de diferentes maneiras, sendo que nas ltimas dcadas a teoria de ecossistemas expandiu-se e ramos especficos, que permitem seguir e predizer a evoluo de ecossistemas, foram formulados. Um destes enfoques, conhecido como anlise do fluxo de insumo-produto, pode ser utilizado para explicar o funcionamento e estrutura dos subsistemas de um ecossistema atravs da descrio dos fluxos de matria ou energia. A anlise do fluxo de insumo-produto pode ser representada atravs de dois modelos: o modelo determinstico ou o modelo estocstico, tendo sua origem em estudos de caso com o objetivo de analisar a econmica norte-americana, sendo uma extenso prtica da teoria clssica de interdependncia geral. Este trabalho faz uma abordagem sinttica da evoluo desta anlise, avaliando dados tericos e principalmente dados referentes Lagoa Itapeva. A anlise de input-output (determinstica e estocstica) com o propsito de obter informaes no que diz respeito aos fluxos (matria e energia), bastante simples; sendo que os modelos determinsticos se prestam melhor para traar um panorama global e para obter projees para as variveis j os modelos estocsticos so mais complexos, mas provem uma descrio mais acurada. Na Lagoa Itapeva os processos determinsticos demonstraram um baixo ndice de ciclagem do carbono entre os trs compartimentos em estudo e o fluxo preferencial na normalizao corresponde ao compartimento dos produtores primrios, isto decorre de no existir loop nos compartimentos em estudo e tambm no existir fluxos em dois sentidos. Em relao avaliao estocstica foram observadas uma baixa relao no sentido espacial superfcie-meio-fundo da lagoa, e uma boa distribuio espacial norte-centro-sul. Quanto distribuio temporal, foi constatada uma baixa concordncia entre os dados analisados e os dados reais quanto das anlises realizadas em intervalos de tempo pequeno (horas) e uma boa concordncia nas medidas feitas quando o intervalo foi significativo (meses). Tambm em relao Lagoa Itapeva, foi verificado nas anlises estocsticas, utilizando-se operadores espaciais, que como a dinmica biolgica nem sempre linear, os organismos no podem acompanhar imediatamente e perfeitamente as mudanas do ambiente, resultando em tempos de residncia de matria significativamente baixo. Alm da anlise dos fluxos ligados a este ecossistema lagunar, foram desenvolvidas tcnicas de correo e adaptao de dados referentes amostragem ocorrida na Lagoa durante um ano de campanha. Assim, prope-se uma nova perspectiva no uso desta metodologia de forma simples e de fcil manipulao matemtica.

Ecologists usually estimate means, but devote much less attention to variation. The study of variation is a key aspect to understand natural systems and to make predictions regarding them. In community ecology, most studies focus on local species diversity (alpha diversity), but only in recent decades have ecologists devoted proper attention to variation in community composition among sites (beta diversity). This is in spite of the fact that the first attempts to estimate beta diversity date back to the pioneering work by Koch and Whittaker in the 1950s. Progress in the last decade has been made in the development both of methods and of hypotheses about the origin and maintenance of variation in community composition. For instance, methods are available to partition total diversity in a region (gamma diversity), in a local component (alpha), and several beta diversities, each corresponding to one scale in a hierarchy. The popularization of the so-called raw-data approach (based on partial constrained ordination techniques) and the distance-based approach (based on correlation of dissimilarity/distance matrices) have allowed many ecologists to address current hypotheses about beta diversity patterns. Overall, these hypotheses are based on niche and neutral theory, accounting for the relative roles of environmental and spatial processes (or a combination of them) in shaping metacommunities. Recent studies have addressed these issues on a variety of spatial and temporal scales, habitats and taxonomic groups. Moreover, life history and functional traits of species such as dispersal abilities and rarity have begun to be considered in studies of beta diversity. In this article we briefly review some of these new tools and approaches developed in recent years, and illustrate them by using case studies in aquatic ecosystems.

A vigilncia dos sorovares de Salmonella em ambientes aquáticos constitui um dos principais elementos do monitoramento das infeces humanas e animais. Foram analisadas 694 amostas de guas de diferentes origens (rio, igarap, baa, praias, lago, poo, nascente, abastecimento, crrego, drenagem e esgoto) procedentes de 11 municpios do Estado do Par, e de 212 (30,5%) amostras foram isoladas 2.115 cepas de 91 sorovares de Salmonella. Foram identificados 77 sorovares de Salmonella do total de 1.300 isolamentos de gua doce e esgoto no municpio de Belm, destacando os sorovares S. Saintpaul, S. Panama, S. Muenster, S. Hadar e S. Agona. Na Floresta Nacional de Caxiuan, 69,4% das amostras de guas foram positivas para Salmonella e 17 sorovares foram identificados, sendo S. Panama, S. Miami e S. Gaminara os mais freqentes. Dentre os isolados de Salmonella dos ambientes aquáticos, 64,8% foram resistentes s drogas, com especial destaque para a estreptomicina (97,1%) e a tetraciclina (10,8%). Ocorreu distribuio uniforme quanto a presena de Salmonella e coliformes termotolerantes em guas superficiais e subterrneas, porm em 10 situaes positivas para Salmonella no foi possvel isolar E.coli. O meio de enriquecimento Rappaport-Vassiliadis foi mais eficiente do que o Selenito Cistina para o isolamento de Salmonella quando mantido a 42,5C. Os sorovares isolados em esgoto foram os mesmos obtidos a partir de coproculturas humanas no mesmo perodo. Os resultados mostram a grande disseminao/disperso da Salmonella em ecossistemas aquáticos no Estado do Par e o risco potencial sade da populao humana.

Os vrus entricos so importantes agentes de doenas de veiculao hdrica. Entre esses, os adenovirus humanos (HAdV) assumiram importncia por serem um dos principais causadores de gastrenterite em crianas menores de cinco anos e pela sua maior resistncia a fatores fsicos e qumicos em detrimento a outros vrus no ambiente. Vrias pesquisas tm demonstrado ausncia de relao entre a presena de bactrias indicadoras e vrus. Diante disso, diversos autores tm sugerido a incluso desses agentes como potenciais indicadores de contaminao viral e fecal da gua. O objetivo desse trabalho foi detectar a presena de HAdV em amostras de gua e esgoto no tratado oriundas de diversos ecossistemas aquáticos da cidade de Belm-PA. Foram selecionados seis pontos de amostragem, dentre eles um esgoto no tratado: Esgoto do UNA e cinco colees hdricas: Porto do Aa, Ver-o-Peso, Igarap Tucunduba, Lago Bolonha e Lago gua Preta. Foi feita uma coleta mensal de dois litros de gua em cada ponto durante 24 meses consecutivos, de nov/2008 a out/2010, totalizando 144 amostras. Foi utilizada gua destilada autoclavada para controle negativo de cada ponto em todos os testes utilizados. As amostras foram concentradas pelo mtodo de adsoro-eluio e posteriormente centrifugadas para a obteno de dois mL. O DNA foi extrado pelo kit comercial Qiagen. Para a deteco molecular foram empregadas a Reao em Cadeia Mediada pela Polimerase (PCR convencional) e a PCR em tempo real, sendo utilizados iniciadores e sondas especficos que amplificam um gene do hexon de 301 e 96 pb, respectivamente. Visando-se melhorar o produto amplificado para sequenciamento genmico, algumas amostras positivas pela PCR convencional foram submetidas Nested-PCR com a utilizao de mais um par de iniciadores que amplificam uma regio interna de 171 pb. Amostras de gua e esgoto foram sequenciadas, analisadas e comparadas a outras obtidas no GeneBank. Os HAdV foram detectados em 59% (85/144) das amostras de gua superficial e esgoto no tratado, sendo que a positividade obtida pela PCR convencional foi de 22,9% (33/144) e pela PCR em tempo real de 58,7% (84/143). A primeira detectou o agente apenas nas amostras do igarap Tucunduba (62,5%) e do esgoto do UNA (75%) e a segunda em amostras provenientes dos seis pontos de coleta (com uma variao de 25 a 100%). O agente foi detectado em todos os 24 meses do estudo, estando presentes em pelo menos dois pontos, mensalmente. A PCR em tempo real se mostrou mais sensvel nesse estudo, tendo encontrado o agente em 36,4% (52/143) das amostras no detectadas pela PCR convencional. Das oito amostras genotipadas todas pertencem espcie F, sendo quatro referentes ao sorotipo 40 e quatro ao 41. Nossos resultados confirmam a alta circulao desse patgeno nas guas superficiais e esgoto da cidade, sugerindo a incluso dos HAdV como bons indicadores de contaminao viral e fecal da gua. A pesquisa desses vrus em ambientes aquáticos pioneira em Belm e tais resultados so de relevante importncia para as polticas de sade pblica e ambiental, servindo como base para estudos complementares nessa rea.

Com o advento da agricultura ampliou-se a produo alimentar e os bens de consumo, no entanto, os riscos ambientais tambm foram maximizados em funo da adoo de tcnicas produtivas baseadas no uso intensivo de insumos agrcolas. Esta problemtica mundial, embora mais evidenciada nos pases em desenvolvimento e que tem, na produo agrcola, a base de sua economia. O Brasil enquadra-se nesta situao e desde 2009 considerado o maior consumidor de agrotxicos do mundo, criando um cenrio de risco ambiental e de sade humana. Os efeitos ambientais, base deste estudo, esto relacionados no somente perda de espcies no-alvo, uma vez que os agrotxicos no so seletivos, mas tambm as alteraes em nvel ecossistmico, a qual se relaciona com as perdas das funes e dos servios gerados pelos sistemas naturais. Adiciona-se a esta complexidade, a forma de ao de cada agrotxico, a distribuio dos mesmos nos diferentes compartimentos (ar, solo e gua), o perodo de permanncia de cada um, as relaes sinrgicas decorrentes das interaes entre diferentes produtos, a formao de subprodutos no processo de degradao, entre outros fatores, como as diferenas existentes entre o ingrediente ativo e a formulao comercial, na qual existem os chamados ingredientes inertes em sua composio, os quais podem ser muito mais txicos para espcies e ecossistemas. Considerando esta abordagem, a presente pesquisa foi desenvolvida com base na realidade de um local de referncia, o municpio de Bom Repouso (MG/BR), no qual a intensificao da produo de morango e batata tem trazido uma srie de riscos sociais e ambientais. Semelhante a outras regies produtivas do pas, o uso de agrotxicos recorrente, amplo e irrestrito, com destaque para as formulaes comerciais Kraft36EC e Score250EC, as quais, juntamente com seus respectivos ingredientes ativos (abamectina e difenoconazol), foram avaliadas por meio de testes de toxicidade com espcies de diferentes nveis trficos representativas de um ecossistema aqutico, gerando informaes que foram avaliadas em nvel de espcie e de ecossistema, simulando o cenrio de aplicao dos produtos no local de referncia. Os resultados obtidos permitiram concluir sobre as diferenas de sensibilidade das espcies e quais seriam as mais indicadas para se avaliar os efeitos txicos de ambos os agrotxicos; os efeitos diferenciados entre a formulao comercial e os ingredientes ativos; bem como as respostas em termos de espcies e de ecossistemas, demonstrando a necessidade de que ambas as anlises sejam consideradas na avaliao de risco ecolgico.

Omnivory is a predominant feeding strategy among tropical fishes, but knowledge about its causes and consequences of this pattern is scarce. In this study we hypothesized that tropical fish feed lower in food web as a way to compensate a higher energetic demand, which increases with increasing water temperature and body size. Information about 8172 freshwater and marine fish species from whole world, from tropical and temperate ecosystems, showed that the trophic position of non-carnivore fish decreases with increasing body size in tropical but not in temperate ecosystems. This result indicates that the higher energetic demand of large-bodied tropical fish should exert a selective force in favor of omnivory. As a consequence, trophic dynamics in tropical freshwater ecosystems should have different patterns comparing to temperate ones, with major implications for water management and restoration of eutrophic aquatic ecosystems. Another hypothesis of this work was that effects of tropical omnivorous planktivorous fish on planktonic communities depend of primary producers stoichiometric composition, which depends of light availability relative to nutrients ratios. A mesocosm experiment, manipulating light availability and planktivorous fish presence, confirmed our hypothesis indicating that resource stoichiometric composition (consequently nutritional quality), determine trophic structure of pelagic food webs in tropical lakes. Finally another mesocosm experiment indicated that the removal of omnivorous benthivorous fish should be more efficient than removal of omnivorous planktivorus fish, as a way to improve water quality in tropical lakes and reservoirs. This last experiment showed that omnivorous planktivorous fish increase phytoplankton biomass due to trophic cascade interactions, without increasing nutrient concentrations in the water column. On the other hand, omnivorous benthivorous fish, feeding on detritus and other benthonic food sources and excreting nutrients in the water column, are responsible for translocate nutrient from sediments to the water column, increasing phosphorus pool and phytoplankton biomass. Thereby, internal phosphorus supply should be reduced and water quality of eutrophicated lakes could be improved by removing omnivorous benthivorous fish.

Organic dyes have been widely used in various branches of dyeing industries. These compounds are known to be very toxic, mutagenic, cancinogenic only cause aesthetic pollution and irreversible damage to aquatic ecosystems and human health. Are recalcitrant contaminants due to its high stability and resistance to photobleaching and bio. Given this context, the search for technologies that can minimize the effects of such pollutants is required. In recent decades the Electrochemical Oxidation Process Advanced (PEOAs) based on the generation of strongly oxidizing species (radicals OH) offer promising approaches for the prevention of problems caused by industrial effluents. This study analyzed the degradation and mineralization of textile dyes and the study of a real effluent in order to assess the feasibility of PEOAs: Electro-Fenton (EF), Photo Electro-Fenton (PEF) and anodic oxidation (AO), and these methods still was studied the Solar Fotoelectro-Fenton (SPEF) in a pre-pilot plant, in order to study the electrochemical treatment on an industrial scale. In the study has compared the effect of PEOAs in the removal of color, TOC and decay kinetics of degradation of the compounds, and also for using the Congo Red (CR) SPEF studies were performed mineralization current efficiency (MCE). The best results are given to the treatment of the PEF for all the studied dyes. From the results it was possible to choose the PEF as the most effective and promising for application of treatment when compared to other methods of treatment, and prove from SPEF that the process can be used in industrial scales, since this method PEF has been improved and solar irradiation replaced the UVA lamp.

Como recurso natural fundamental vida, a gua e os ecossistemas aquáticos devem ser alvo de avaliao contnua, no que se reporta sua qualidade fsica, qumica e biolgica. Segundo a Organizao Mundial de Sade cerca de 1,1 bilies de pessoas esto impossibilitadas em aceder a qualquer tipo de gua potvel e, as populaes residentes nas proximidades de rios, lagoas, e reservatrios utilizam estas guas para as suas necessidades de consumo, aumentando o risco de transmisso de doenas. Enquanto constituintes da comunidade fitoplanctnica, as cianobactrias so microrganismos procariotas, fotossintticos, que obtm os nutrientes diretamente da coluna de gua e, um aumento da concentrao de nutrientes (principalmente azoto e fsforo), associado a condies ambientais favorveis, pode desencadear um crescimento rpido originando fluorescncias. Sob determinadas condies as cianobactrias podem produzir toxinas existindo registos que evidenciam que fluorescncias toxicas so responsveis pelo envenenamento agudo e morte de animais e humanos pelo que, a gua utilizada para consumo humano dever ser regularmente monitorizada para este elemento biolgico. O objetivo deste estudo relacionar a ocorrncia de fluorescncias de cianobactrias (> 2000 cel/ml) e toxicidade associada, com o impacte potencial na Sade Pblica avaliado atravs do consumo direto ou indireto da gua. Em Portugal foram selecionados oito reservatrios situados na regio Sul, pertencentes s bacias hidrogrficas do Sado e Guadiana e estudados entre 2000 e 2008. No Brasil foram selecionados os reservatrios de Trs Marias (Estado de Minas Gerais) e de Tucuru (Estado do Par) e estudados em 2005 e 2006 respetivamente. Os reservatrios foram caracterizados em termos fsicos e qumicos, tendo-se igualmente procedido caracterizao da comunidade fitoplanctnica atravs da identificao e quantificao dos principais grupos presentes em diferentes pocas do ano. Em termos fitoplanctnicos os reservatrios portugueses apresentaram maior diversidade,verificando-se contudo dominncia das cianobactrias na comunidade. Associados a fluorescncias, foram registados nestes reservatrios gneros produtores de hepato e neurotoxinas como Aphanizomenon sp, Microcystis aeruginosa e Oscillatoria sp. No Brasil, em situao de fluorescncias, os gneros produtores de neuro e hepatotoxinas foram Microcystis (> 350.000 cels/ml) e Cylindrospermopsis. A presena destes gneros, poder constituir um risco potencial para a sade pblica, pelo que importante a implementao de medidas de mitigao em todos os reservatrios objeto de estudo, devendo essa atuao passar pelo controle do estado trfico no sentido de evitar o desenvolvimento de fluorescncias. Assim sugere-se a implementao de um tratamento adequado para a produo de gua de consumo e a organizao de aes de sensibilizao e aviso e informao s populaes que utilizam os reservatrios em Portugal e no Brasil para diversos usos. - ABSTRACT - As a life fundamental natural resource, water and aquatic ecosystems must be continuously evaluated in their physical, chemical and biological quality. According World Health Organization, 1.1 billion people has no chance to access any kind of potable water. Populations living near rivers, lagoons or reservoirs use those waters to content their needs, increasing risks disease transmission. As members of phytoplankton community, cyanobacteria are prokaryotic, photosynthetic microorganisms and get its nutrients directly from water column. The increase of this nutrients (especially nitrogen and phosphorus) associated with favorable environment conditions, can support a sudden grow and instigate blooms. Under specific conditions cyanobacteria can produce toxins and several records have shown that toxic blooms are responsible by acute poisoning and death in animals and humans so, water for human consumption must be regularly surveyed for this biologic element. The aim of this study is to correlate Cyanobacteria blooms (>2.000cels/ml) and connected toxicity with public health impact, evaluated through water consumption. In Portugal, eight reservoirs located in the South region were selected and study between 2000 and 2008. In Brazil, Trs Marias reservoir (Minas Gerais Provence) and Tucuru (Par Provence) were selected and study in 2005 and 2006. Reservoirs were characterized in physical and chemical aspects, as well as phytoplankton community, through identification and counting of main present groups along study period. In bloom circumstances, liver toxins and neurotoxins producers like Aphanizomenon sp, Microcystis aeruginosa and Oscillatoria sp. were founded in Portuguese reservoirs. In Brazil, cyanobacteria genera involved in toxic bloom were Microcystis (> 350.000 cels/ml) and Cylindrospermopsis. This genera presence represents a potential risk for public health, and show the requirement to implement mitigation measures in all study reservoirs. These measures can be represented by water eutrophication control to avoid blooms, by appropriate treatments of water to human consumption, and public warnings or information to dose people in Portugal and Brazil that use these reservoirs to several activities.

Water covers over 70% of the Earth's surface, and is vital for all known forms of life. But only 3% of the Earth's water is fresh water, and less than 0.3% of all freshwater is in rivers, lakes, reservoirs and the atmosphere. However, rivers and lakes are an important part of fresh surface water, amounting to about 89%. In this Master Thesis dissertation, the focus is on three types of water bodies rivers, lakes and reservoirs, and their water quality issues in Asian countries. The surface water quality in a region is largely determined both by the natural processes such as climate or geographic conditions, and the anthropogenic influences such as industrial and agricultural activities or land use conversion. The quality of the water can be affected by pollutants discharge from a specific point through a sewer pipe and also by extensive drainage from agriculture/urban areas and within basin. Hence, water pollutant sources can be divided into two categories: Point source pollution and Non-point source (NPS) pollution. Seasonal variations in precipitation and surface run-off have a strong effect on river discharge and the concentration of pollutants in water bodies. For example, in the rainy season, heavy and persistent rain wash off the ground, the runoff flow increases and may contain various kinds of pollutants and, eventually, enters the water bodies. In some cases, especially in confined water bodies, the quality may be positive related with rainfall in the wet season, because this confined type of fresh water systems allows high dilution of pollutants, decreasing their possible impacts. During the dry season, the quality of water is largely related to industrialization and urbanization pollution. The aim of this study is to identify the most common water quality problems in Asian countries and to enumerate and analyze the methodologies used for assessment of water quality conditions of both rivers and confined water bodies (lakes and reservoirs). Based on the evaluation of a sample of 57 papers, dated between 2000 and 2012, it was found that over the past decade, the water quality of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs in developing countries is being degraded. Water pollution and destruction of aquatic ecosystems have caused massive damage to the functions and integrity of water resources. The most widespread NPS in Asian countries and those which have the greatest spatial impacts are urban runoff and agriculture. Locally, mine waste runoff and rice paddy are serious NPS problems. The most relevant point pollution sources are the effluents from factories, sewage treatment plant, and public or household facilities. It was found that the most used methodology was unquestionably the monitoring activity, used in 49 of analyzed studies, accounting for 86%. Sometimes, data from historical databases were used as well. It can be seen that taking samples from the water body and then carry on laboratory work (chemical analyses) is important because it can give an understanding of the water quality. 6 papers (11%) used a method that combined monitoring data and modeling. 6 papers (11%) just applied a model to estimate the quality of water. Modeling is a useful resource when there is limited budget since some models are of free download and use. In particular, several of used models come from the U.S.A, but they have their own purposes and features, meaning that a careful application of the models to other countries and a critical discussion of the results are crucial. 5 papers (9%) focus on a method combining monitoring data and statistical analysis. When there is a huge data matrix, the researchers need an efficient way of interpretation of the information which is provided by statistics. 3 papers (5%) used a method combining monitoring data, statistical analysis and modeling. These different methods are all valuable to evaluate the water quality. It was also found that the evaluation of water quality was made as well by using other types of sampling different than water itself, and they also provide useful information to understand the condition of the water body. These additional monitoring activities are: Air sampling, sediment sampling, phytoplankton sampling and aquatic animal tissues sampling. Despite considerable progress in developing and applying control regulations to point and NPS pollution, the pollution status of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs in Asian countries is not improving. In fact, this reflects the slow pace of investment in new infrastructure for pollution control and growing population pressures. Water laws or regulations and public involvement in enforcement can play a constructive and indispensable role in environmental protection. In the near future, in order to protect water from further contamination, rapid action is highly needed to control the various kinds of effluents in one region. Environmental remediation and treatment of industrial effluent and municipal wastewaters is essential. It is also important to prevent the direct input of agricultural and mine site runoff. Finally, stricter environmental regulation for water quality is required to support protection and management strategies. It would have been possible to get further information based in the 57 sample of papers. For instance, it would have been interesting to compare the level of concentrations of some pollutants in the diferente Asian countries. However the limit of three months duration for this study prevented further work to take place. In spite of this, the study objectives were achieved: the work provided an overview of the most relevant water quality problems in rivers, lakes and reservoirs in Asian countries, and also listed and analyzed the most common methodologies.
