Neste estudo, foram abordadas as implicações da condição nutricional e características físicas de Passiflora suberosa e Passiflora misera para a performance, comportamento de escolha pelo adulto, digestão e nutrição das larvas de H. erato phyllis. Inicialmente, avaliaram-se aspectos do desenvolvimento e foram realizadas medidas morfométricas de Passiflora suberosa e Passiflora misera cultivadas em três níveis de nitrogênio no solo. Avaliou-se o crescimento, a área foliar, o comprimento dos internódios, a dureza, a espessura, e a pilosidade, bem como analisou-se o conteúdo de água, de macro e micronutrientes presentes nos tecidos das respectivas plantas de ambas espécies. A seguir verificou-se a influência destas plantas na performance de Heliconius erato phyllis. Para isto, avaliou-se a sobrevivência, o tempo de desenvolvimento das larvas, o tamanho das pupas e dos adultos. Também, testou-se o comportamento de escolha dos adultos para oviposição, frente aos ramos de tais passifloráceas. Aspectos da ecologia nutricional das larvas foram avaliados, de forma comparativa, frente a P. suberosa e P. misera, através de índices nutricionais. Determinou-se: 1) o índice de consumo; 2) a taxa de crescimento relativo; 3) a digestibilidade aparente 4) a eficiência na conversão do alimento ingerido e 5) a eficiência na conversão do alimento digerido e convertido em biomassa. Ainda, 6) foi traçado um perfil de macro e micro nutrientes de P. suberosa e P. misera das plantas cultivadas e utilizadas para a criação das larvas, e de duas populações naturais. Em nível de digestão, determinou-se: 1) a quantidade de alimento ingerido, processado e retido 2) o tamanho dos fragmentos vegetais encontrados no intestino anterior e posterior; e ainda, 3) possíveis modificações morfológicas dos fragmentos, no decorrer da passagem destes através do tubo digestivo. O crescimento, a área foliar, e o comprimento dos internódios, de ambas passifloráceas, foram influenciados pelos níveis de nitrogênio. As plantas sem adição deste mineral apresentaram menores medidas em todos estes parâmetros. Foi detectada maior dureza e menor conteúdo de água nas primeiras folhas de P. suberosa cultivadas sem adição de nitrogênio. P. misera cultivada nesta condição também apresentou menor conteúdo de água, no entanto não houve maior dureza nas folhas. P.misera apresentou maior espessura nas primeiras e quintas folhas cultivadas com mais nitrogênio. A maioria dos macro e micronutrientes foram acumulados em maior concentração nas plantas com maior adição de nitrogênio no solo. O maior tempo no desenvolvimento e o menor tamanho alcançado pelos adultos foram causados pela menor porcentagem de nitrogênio e água contidos nos tecidos das plantas sem adição deste mineral. As larvas alimentadas com ramos de P. suberosa nesta condição, também enfrentaram a maior dureza da folha nos primeiros instares. As modificações morfológicas e nutricionais de ambas passifloráceas produziram efeitos na performance e na preferência de H. erato phyllis. A maior taxa de crescimento das larvas alimentadas com P. misera foi explicada pelo maior consumo e pela maior digestibilidade. Conseqüentemente, houve maior eficiência na conversão do alimento ingerido em substância corpórea. Não houve rompimentos das células da epiderme, nem dos fragmentos de P. misera nem dos de P. suberosa, retirados de ambas regiões intestinais. A maior permanência no intestino e o maior contato com o meio digestivo possibilitaram maior aproveitamento dos nutrientes de P. misera, em relação à P. suberosa. Isto ocorreu devido ao menor tamanho com que P. misera foi cortada pelas larvas, e pela menor espessura da folha. Quanto aos nutrientes, com exceção do fósforo e do manganês, os demais foram encontrados em maior concentração em P. suberosa. Dessa forma, as vantagens obtidas pelas larvas devem-se à maior eficiência destas no aproveitamento dos nutrientes contidos em P. misera, e não a um conteúdo nutricional superior nesta espécie.

A traça-do-tomateiro apresentou maior oviposição ao colonizar tomateiros cultivados em sistema convencional em relação ao orgânico em estudos prévios realizados no campo. Visando confirmar e entender o padrão observado no campo, aspectos bioecológicos como oviposição e mortalidade de imaturos foram comparados em condições semi-controladas de casa de vegetação com plantas cultivadas em vasos com solo proveniente do sistema orgânico e convencional. Adultos da traça-do-tomateiro foram liberados na casa de vegetação e após 24h, as plantas infestadas foram transferidas para outra casa de vegetação, para acompanhamento de coortes horizontais. Os ovos naturalmente depositados pela traça-do-tomateiro foram localizados na planta e demarcados. Em seguida, a folha foi ensacada. Diariamente as plantas foram observadas, registrando a fase de desenvolvimento do inseto e a ocorrência de morte, até que todos os insetos completassem seu ciclo de vida. A oviposição pela traça-do-tomateiro em plantas com solos oriundos do sistema convencional foi duas vezes maior do que em plantas com solos do sistema orgânico. A curva de sobrevivência da fase imatura e a tabela de vida da traça-do-tomateiro em casa de vegetação mostraram que a sobrevivência em plantas com solo orgânico e convencional não apresentaram diferenças. Assim as diferenças no comportamento de padrão de oviposição observadas a campo provavelmente não estão relacionadas com o desempenho da progênie e podem ser influenciado pelo ambiente proporcionado pelo sistema orgânico de produção.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a biologia de ninfas e adultos do percevejo-verde em estruturas reprodutivas do algodoeiro. Os alimentos testados foram: dieta padrão, contendo vagem de feijão, amendoim cru e frutos de ligustro; vagem verde de soja; semente de soja; botão floral de algodoeiro; e maçãs e sementes de algodoeiro. Foram avaliados os parâmetros biológicos: período de desenvolvimento e sobrevivência ninfal; longevidade de fêmeas e machos; percentagem de fêmeas em oviposição; períodos de pré-oviposição e oviposição; número total de ovos por fêmea; e viabilidade dos ovos. Ninfas alimentadas com estruturas reprodutivas do algodoeiro morreram no segundo ou no terceiro ínstar. Adultos alimentados com botão floral e semente de algodoeiro não se reproduzem; porém, há reprodução quando adultos os de percevejo-verde são alimentados com maçã de algodoeiro, o que indica a capacidade de adaptação da espécie na fase reprodutiva do algodoeiro.

Feeding is the primary selective pressure in all forms of animals. Nutritional ecological models predict consequences of preferred and non-preferred food consumption on behavioural, physiological and morphological adaptations. At same time, socioecological models infer socio-organizarion patterns based on feeding competition faced by animals. A list of preferred foods, and inferences regarding the intensity of feeding competition and its behavioural consequences are information of much importance for management of populations in fragments. In this work we observed the feeding behavior and spatial positioning of a group of more than 100 blond capuchin monkeys (Sapajus flavius) that inhabit a fragment of Atlantic forest, surrounded by sugarcane plantation. We compared the consumption of different food items with their monthly availability in the area to define the preferred and fallback food items. We recorded the vocalizations of aggression and the inter-individual distance (area of Minimum Convex Polygon/n individuals) to infer the type of food competition experienced by animals. In the year studied the fruit feeding time correlated with top consumed fruit productivity, indicating preference for fruits. Our data indicate that the species Elaeis sp., Cecropia palmata, Inga spp. and Simarouba amara are the preferred food items in the diet. Available all year round and uniformly distributed, sugarcane was a regular item in the diet and its was characterized as a staple fallback food for this group. Although fruits are preferential food items, direct competition rate did not correlate to fruit productivity in the area, maintaining the high rates throughout the year (2.45 events/ hour). The inter-individual distance index positively correlated with rain fall indicating scramble food competition. The number of neighbours of females carrying infants was smaller when fruit productivity is low, indicating that females carrying infants are suffering increased indirect competition. Our data indicates that blond capuchins in this fragment make use of sugar cane as a staple fallback food, which evidence the importance of sugar cane landscape for the survival of this critically endangered capuchin species in fragmented habitats in Northeast Brazil. A preliminary list of preferred and important foods is offered, and can assist in the choice of trees for reforestation, better fragments to be preserved and areas of release and translocation of animals. We did not observe an increase of contest competition while using preferred foods, but when using staple FBF. This may be due the altered environment, which results in high competition food throughout the year. Both the food preference as the social and behavioral consequences of high food competition experienced by animals in this fragment must be accompanied over the years to ensure the survival of this population.

The red deer (Cervus elaphus) is currently one of the most widespread and abundant wild ungulates in the Iberian Peninsula and is extremely important both ecologically, as a key species for the functioning of the ecosystems, and economically, as a major game species. In Iberia, red deer populations are subjected to different management systems that may affect the physical condition of the individuals, with further consequences for population dynamics. Studies investigating the effects of management practices and environmental conditions on the performance of red deer are still rare regarding Mediterranean ecosystems. Much of the knowledge concerning the ecology of red deer and the impact of management on its physical condition is based on studies conducted in northern and central regions of Europe, where climatological features and management practices differ from those observed in the Mediterranean areas of Iberia. Studies on a biogeographical scale can provide important insights into the relationships between species and a particular environment and contribute to the development of more targeted and appropriate management practices. The optimisation of sampling procedures and the fine-tuning of pre-existing analytical techniques are also fundamental to a more cost-effective monitoring and, therefore, are of enormous value to wildlife managers. In this context, the main aims of this thesis were: 1) to optimise the procedures used to assess the physical condition of red deer; and 2) to identify relevant management and environmental factors affecting the nutritional condition and stress physiology of red deer in the Mediterranean ecosystems of Iberia, as well as any potential interactions between those factors. Two studies with a methodological focus, presented in the first part of the thesis, demonstrated that the physical condition of red deer can be evaluated more simply, using more cost- and time-effective procedures than those traditionally used: i) it was shown that only one kidney and its associated fat is enough to assess nutritional condition in red deer; and ii) the feasibility of using near infrared spectroscopy to predict the concentrations of stress hormone metabolites was demonstrated using faeces of red deer for the first time. Subsequently, two large-scale observational studies, conducted in representative red deer populations found in Mediterranean Iberia, highlighted the importance of considering seasonal environmental variations and variables related to hunting management practices to better understand the nutritional and physiological ecology of red deer. High population densities had adverse effects on the nutritional condition of the deer and were associated with increased stress levels in natural populations without supplementary feeding. Massive hunting events involving the use of hounds were also identified as a potential source of chronic stress in red deer. The research presented in this thesis has clear implications regarding the management and monitoring of red deer populations in Mediterranean environments and is intended to help wildlife managers to implement more effective monitoring programmes and sustainable management practices.

OBJETIVO: Este artigo analisa e compara os dados de consumo alimentar de duas populações ribeirinhas da Amazônia vivendo em ecossistemas contrastantes de floresta tropical: a várzea estacional e a floresta de terra firme. MÉTODOS: Foi estudado o consumo alimentar de 11 unidades domésticas na várzea (Ilha de Ituqui, Município de Santarém) e 17 na terra firme (Floresta Nacional de Caxiuanã, Municípios de Melgaço e Portel). O método utilizado foi o recordatório de 24 horas. As análises estatísticas foram executadas com o auxílio do programa Statistical Package for Social Sciences 12.0. RESULTADOS: Em ambos os ecossistemas, os resultados confirmam a centralidade do pescado e da mandioca na dieta local. Porém, a contribuição de outros itens alimentares secundários, tais como o açaí (em Caxiuanã) e o leite in natura (em Ituqui), também foi significante. Além disso, o açúcar revelou ser uma fonte de energia confiável para enfrentar as flutuações sazonais dos recursos naturais. Parece haver ainda uma maior contribuição energética dos peixes para a dieta de Ituqui, provavelmente em função da maior produtividade dos rios e lagos da várzea em relação à terra firme. Por fim, Ituqui revelou uma maior dependência de itens alimentares comprados, enquanto Caxiuanã mostrou estar ainda bastante vinculada à agricultura e às redes locais de troca. CONCLUSÃO: Além dos resultados confirmarem a importância do pescado e da mandioca, também mostraram que produtos industrializados, como o açúcar, têm um papel importante nas dietas, podendo apontar para tendências no consumo alimentar relacionadas com a atual transição nutricional e com a erosão, em diferentes níveis, dos sistemas de subsistência locais.

The objective of the current study was to evaluate the zootechnical performance (survival and growth) of Litopenaeus vannamei post-Iarvae fed an artificial shrimp diet supplemented with Artemia flakes or freeze-dried Artemia embryos. For that purpose, 20 culturing units were individually stocked with 50 shrimp post-Iarvae (average dry weight of 0,3 ± 0,03 mg) at a stocking density of 20 post-larvae per liter, and fed the experimental diets to satiation during 20 days. The experimental design consisted of four diets (T1, T2, T3 and T4) with five repetitions each. For treatments T1, T2 and T3, dietary supplements of 5mg of Artemia flakes (T1), freeze-dried Artemia embryos (T2), and of the commercial shrimp diet (T3) were offered 2 hours after the shrimp were initially fed the commercial shrimp diet. For treatment T4 (control), no additive was offered 2 hours after the initial feeding. Shrimp survival, absolut (GPA) and relative increase in weight (GPR), and specific growth rate (TCR) were used as evaluation criteria. After the experimental period, no significant statistical differences (p>0,05) in survival were observed. Regarding growth, the dietary treatment which used freeze-dried Artemia embryos as an additive (T2) presented the best results for GPA (6,7 ± 0,7 mg). There were no statistical differences within treatments T1, T3 and T4 (p>0,05). AIso, post-larvae fed freeze-dried embryos (T2) showed a relative increase in weight (2241,4%) which differed significantly (p<0,05) from T4(1911,7%) but not from T1 (1801,6%) or T3 (1946,7%). In conclusion, the results of the current study indicate that an artificial shrimp diet supplemented with freeze-dried Artemia embryos fulfils the nutritional requirements of post-larvae L. vannamei and promotes a better growth than diets not supplemented with Artemia flakes
