We propose an experiment in which the phonon excitation of ion(s) in a trap, with a trap frequency exponentially modulated at rate kappa, exhibits a thermal spectrum with an Unruh temperature given by k(B)T=h kappa. We discuss the similarities of this experiment to the response of detectors in a de Sitter universe and the usual Unruh effect for uniformly accelerated detectors. We demonstrate a new Unruh effect for detectors that respond to antinormally ordered moments using the ion's first blue sideband transition.

An exact solution of the Einstein equations in vacuum representing two pairs of gravitational solitons propagating on an expanding universe is given and studied. It is suggested that the solitons evolve from quasiparticles to pure gravitational waves. Two of the four solitons collide and the focusing produced on null rays is studied. Although the spacetime following the collision is highly distorted, null rays do not focus to a singularity.

The thermodynamic properties of dark energy fluids described by an equation of state parameter omega = p/rho are rediscussed in the context of FRW type geometries. Contrarily to previous claims, it is argued here that the phantom regime omega < -1 is not physically possible since that both the temperature and the entropy of every physical fluids must be always positive definite. This means that one cannot appeal to negative temperature in order to save the phantom dark energy hypothesis as has been recently done in the literature. Such a result remains true as long as the chemical potential is zero. However, if the phantom fluid is endowed with a non-null chemical potential, the phantom field hypothesis becomes thermodynamically consistent, that is, there are macroscopic equilibrium states with T > 0 and S > 0 in the course of the Universe expansion. A realistic model describing a black string-like object in an expanding Universe is analyzed in the context of the McVittie's solution of the Einstein field equations. The bulk metric near the brane is provided analogously to previous solutions for black strings. In particular, we show that at least when the Hubble parameter on the brane is positive, a black string-like object seems to play a fundamental role in the braneworld scenario, generalizing the standard black strings in the context of a dynamical brane. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

We show that a single imperfect fluid can be used as a source to obtain a mass-varying black hole in an expanding universe. This approach generalizes the well-known McVittie spacetime, by allowing the mass to vary thanks to a novel mechanism based on the presence of a temperature gradient. This fully dynamical solution, which does not require phantom fields or fine-tuning, is a step forward in a new direction in the study of systems whose local gravitational attraction is coupled to the expansion of the universe. We present a simple but instructive example for the mass function and briefly discuss the structure of the apparent horizons and the past singularity.

The aim of this dissertation is to present the sequence of events which brought the scientific community of the early 20th century to conceive an expanding Universe born from a single origin. Among the facts here reported, some are well-known, some others instead are little-known backstories, not so easy neither to obtain nor to trust. Indeed, several matters shown in this thesis, now as then, create a battleground among scientists. Amid the numerous personalities whose contributions are discussed in this work, the main protagonist is surely Georges Lemaître, who managed to combine – without overlapping – his being both a priest and a scientist. The first chapter is dedicated to his biography, from his childhood in Belgium, to his early adulthood between England and the USA, to his success in the scientific community. The second and the third chapter explain how the race to the understanding of a Universe which not only expands, but also originated from a singularity, developed. The Belgian priest’s discoveries, as shown, were challenged by other important scientists, who, in several cases, Lemaître had a friendly relationship with. As a consequence, the fourth and final chapter deals with the multiple relations that the priest managed to build, thanks to his politeness and kindness. Moreover, it is also covered Lemaître’s personal connection with the Church and religion, without forgetting the personalities that influenced him – above all, Saint Thomas Aquinas. As a conclusion to this thesis, two appendices gather not only a summary of Lemaître’s works which are not already described in the chapters, but also the biographies of all the characters presented in this dissertation.

The problem of cosmological particle creation for a spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic universes is discussed in the context of f (R) theories of gravity. Different from cosmological models based on general relativity theory, it is found that a conformal invariant metric does not forbid the creation of massless particles during the early stages (radiation era) of the universe. Three published papers are resumed in this thesis. Different aspects of the semiclassical theory of gravity are discussed. In chapter 1 we find a new perturbative (yet analytical) solution to the unsolved problem of the metric junction between two Friedmann-Robertson-Walker using Israel's formalism. The case of an expanding radiation core inside an expanding or collapsing dust exterior is treated. This model can be useful in the "landscape" cosmology in string theory or for treating new gravastar configurations. In chapter 2 we investigate the possible use of the Kodama vector field as a substitute for the Killing vector field. In particular we find the response function of an Unruh detector following an (accelerated) Kodama trajectory. The detector has finite extension and backreaction is considered. In chapter 3 we study the possible creation of microscopic black holes at LHC in the brane world model. It is found that the black hole tidal charge has a fundamental role in preventing the formation of the horizon.

In this report we will investigate the effect of negative energy density in a classic Friedmann cosmology. Although never measured and possibly unphysical, the evolution of a Universe containing a significant cosmological abundance of any of a number of hypothetical stable negative energy components is explored. These negative energy (Ω < 0) forms include negative phantom energy (w<-1), negative cosmological constant (w=-1), negative domain walls (w=-2/3), negative cosmic strings (w= -1/3), negative mass (w=0), negative radiation (w=1/3), and negative ultra-light (w > 1/3). Assuming that such universe components generate pressures as perfect fluids, the attractive or repulsive nature of each negative energy component is reviewed. The Friedmann equations can only be balanced when negative energies are coupled to a greater magnitude of positive energy or positive curvature, and minimal cases of both of these are reviewed. The future and fate of such universes in terms of curvature, temperature, acceleration, and energy density are reviewed including endings categorized as a Big Crunch, Big Void, or Big Rip and further qualified as "Warped", "Curved", or "Flat", "Hot" versus "Cold", "Accelerating" versus" Decelerating" versus "Coasting". A universe that ends by contracting to zero energy density is termed a Big Poof. Which contracting universes ``bounce" in expansion and which expanding universes ``turnover" into contraction are also reviewed. The name by which the ending of the Universe is mentioned is our own nomenclature.

We have shown how the analysis of the angiotomography reconstruction through OsiriX program has assisted in endovascular perioperative programming. We presented its application in situations when an unexpected existence of metallic overlapping artifact (orthopedic osteosynthesis) compromised the adequate visualization of the arterial lesion during the procedure. Through manipulation upon OsiriX software, with assistance of preview under virtual fluoroscopy, it was possible to obtain the angles that would avoid this juxtaposition. These angles were reproduced in the C-arm, allowing visualization of the occluded segment, reducing the need for repeated image acquisitions and contrast overload, allowing the continuation of the procedure.

A compact frequency standard based on an expanding cold (133)CS cloud is under development in our laboratory. In a first experiment, Cs cold atoms were prepared by a magneto-optical trap in a vapor cell, and a microwave antenna was used to transmit the radiation for the clock transition. The signal obtained from fluorescence of the expanding cold atoms cloud is used to lock a microwave chain. In this way the overall system stability is evaluated. A theoretical model based on a two-level system interacting with the two microwave pulses enables interpretation for the observed features, especially the poor Ramsey fringes contrast.
