Ce Texte Presente Plusieurs Resultats Exacts Sur les Seconds Moments des Autocorrelations Echantillonnales, Pour des Series Gaussiennes Ou Non-Gaussiennes. Nous Donnons D'abord des Formules Generales Pour la Moyenne, la Variance et les Covariances des Autocorrelations Echantillonnales, Dans le Cas Ou les Variables de la Serie Sont Interchangeables. Nous Deduisons de Celles-Ci des Bornes Pour les Variances et les Covariances des Autocorrelations Echantillonnales. Ces Bornes Sont Utilisees Pour Obtenir des Limites Exactes Sur les Points Critiques Lorsqu'on Teste le Caractere Aleatoire D'une Serie Chronologique, Sans Qu'aucune Hypothese Soit Necessaire Sur la Forme de la Distribution Sous-Jacente. Nous Donnons des Formules Exactes et Explicites Pour les Variances et Covariances des Autocorrelations Dans le Cas Ou la Serie Est un Bruit Blanc Gaussien. Nous Montrons Que Ces Resultats Sont Aussi Valides Lorsque la Distribution de la Serie Est Spheriquement Symetrique. Nous Presentons les Resultats D'une Simulation Qui Indiquent Clairement Qu'on Approxime Beaucoup Mieux la Distribution des Autocorrelations Echantillonnales En Normalisant Celles-Ci Avec la Moyenne et la Variance Exactes et En Utilisant la Loi N(0,1) Asymptotique, Plutot Qu'en Employant les Seconds Moments Approximatifs Couramment En Usage. Nous Etudions Aussi les Variances et Covariances Exactes D'autocorrelations Basees Sur les Rangs des Observations.

Simulations of supersymmetric field theories with spontaneously broken supersymmetry require in addition to the ultraviolet regularisation also an infrared one, due to the emergence of the massless Goldstino. The intricate interplay between ultraviolet and infrared effects towards the continuum and infinite volume limit demands careful investigations to avoid potential problems. In this paper – the second in a series of three – we present such an investigation for N=2 supersymmetric quantum mechanics formulated on the lattice in terms of bosonic and fermionic bonds. In one dimension, the bond formulation allows to solve the system exactly, even at finite lattice spacing, through the construction and analysis of transfer matrices. In the present paper we elaborate on this approach and discuss a range of exact results for observables such as the Witten index, the mass spectra and Ward identities.

We perform the exact renormalization of two-dimensional massless gauge theories. Using these exact results we discuss the cluster property and confinement in both the anomalous and chiral Schwinger models.

Exact results on particle densities as well as correlators in two models of immobile particles, containing either a single species or else two distinct species, are derived. The models evolve following a descent dynamics through pair annihilation where each particle interacts once at most throughout its entire history. The resulting large number of stationary states leads to a non-vanishing configurational entropy. Our results are established for arbitrary initial conditions and are derived via a generating function method. The single-species model is the dual of the 1D zero-temperature kinetic Ising model with Kimball-Deker-Haake dynamics. In this way, both in finite and semi-infinite chains and also the Bethe lattice can be analysed. The relationship with the random sequential adsorption of dimers and weakly tapped granular materials is discussed.

Previous studies have enabled exact prediction of probabilities of identity-by-descent (IBD) in randommating populations for a few loci (up to four or so), with extension to more using approximate regression methods. Here we present a precise predictor of multiple-locus IBD using simple formulas based on exact results for two loci. In particular, the probability of non-IBD X ABC at each of ordered loci A, B, and C can be well approximated by XABC = XABXBC/XB and generalizes to X123. . .k = X12X23. . .Xk-1,k/ Xk-2, where X is the probability of non-IBD at each locus. Predictions from this chain rule are very precise with population bottlenecks and migration, but are rather poorer in the presence of mutation. From these coefficients, the probabilities of multilocus IBD and non-IBD can also be computed for genomic regions as functions of population size, time, and map distances. An approximate but simple recurrence formula is also developed, which generally is less accurate than the chain rule but is more robust with mutation. Used together with the chain rule it leads to explicit equations for non-IBD in a region. The results can be applied to detection of quantitative trait loci (QTL) by computing the probability of IBD at candidate loci in terms of identity-by-state at neighboring markers.

In a recent paper, Gordon, Muratov, and Shvartsman studied a partial differential equation (PDE) model describing radially symmetric diffusion and degradation in two and three dimensions. They paid particular attention to the local accumulation time (LAT), also known in the literature as the mean action time, which is a spatially dependent timescale that can be used to provide an estimate of the time required for the transient solution to effectively reach steady state. They presented exact results for three-dimensional applications and gave approximate results for the two-dimensional analogue. Here we make two generalizations of Gordon, Muratov, and Shvartsman’s work: (i) we present an exact expression for the LAT in any dimension and (ii) we present an exact expression for the variance of the distribution. The variance provides useful information regarding the spread about the mean that is not captured by the LAT. We conclude by describing further extensions of the model that were not considered by Gordon,Muratov, and Shvartsman. We have found that exact expressions for the LAT can also be derived for these important extensions...

This paper deals with two approximate methods of finding the period of oscillations of non-linear conservative systems excited by step functions. The first method is an extension of the analysis presented by Jonckheere [4] and the second one is based on a weighted bilinear approximation of the non-linear characteristic. An example is presented and the approximate results are compared with the exact results

We offer a procedure for evaluating the forces exerted by solitons of weak-coupling field theories on one another. We illustrate the procedure for the kink and the antikink of the two-dimensional φ4 theory. To do this, we construct analytically a static solution of the theory which can be interpreted as a kink and an antikink held a distance R apart. This leads to a definition of the potential energy U(R) for the pair, which is seen to have all the expected features. A corresponding evaluation is also done for U(R) between a soliton and an antisoliton of the sine-Gordon theory. When this U(R) is inserted into a nonrelativistic two-body problem for the pair, it yields a set of bound states and phase shifts. These are found to agree with exact results known for the sine-Gordon field theory in those regions where U(R) is expected to be significant, i.e., when R is large compared to the soliton size. We take this agreement as support that our procedure for defining U(R) yields the correct description of the dynamics of well-separated soliton pairs. An important feature of U(R) is that it seems to give strong intersoliton forces when the coupling constant is small, as distinct from the forces between the ordinary quanta of the theory. We suggest that this is a general feature of a class of theories, and emphasize the possible relevance of this feature to real strongly interacting hadrons.

In this article we study the one-dimensional random geometric (random interval) graph when the location of the nodes are independent and exponentially distributed. We derive exact results and limit theorems for the connectivity and other properties associated with this random graph. We show that the asymptotic properties of a graph with a truncated exponential distribution can be obtained using the exponential random geometric graph. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Random Struct. The possibility of applying two approximate methods for determining the salient features of response of undamped non-linear spring mass systems subjected to a step input, is examined. The results obtained on the basis of these approximate methods are compared with the exact results that are available for some particular types of spring characteristics. The extension of the approximate methods for non-linear systems with general polynomial restoring force characteristics is indicated.

An exact solution for the free vibration problem of non-linear cubic spring mass system with Coulomb damping is obtained during each half cycle, in terms of elliptic functions. An expression for the half cycle duration as a function of the mean amplitude during the half cycle is derived in terms of complete elliptic integrals of the first kind. An approximate solution based on a direct linearization method is developed alongside this method, and excellent agreement is obtained between the results gained by this method and the exact results. © 1970 Academic Press Inc. This paper deals with the approximate solutions of non-linear autonomous systems by the application of ultraspherical polynomials. From the differential equations for amplitude and phase, set up by the method of variation of parameters, the approximate solutions are obtained by a generalized averaging technique based on the ultraspherical polynomial expansions. The method is illustrated with examples and the results are compared with the digital and analog computer solutions. There is a close agreement between the analytical and exact results.

This paper deals with the approximate analysis of the step response of non-linear nonconservative systems by the application of ultraspherical polynomials. From the differential equations for amplitude and phase, set up by the method of variation of parameters, the approximate solutions are obtained by a generalized averaging technique based on ultraspherical polynomial expansions. The Krylov-Bogoliubov results are given by a particular set of these polynomials. The method has been applied to study the step response of a cubic spring mass system in presence of viscous, material, quadratic, and mixed types of damping. The approximate results are compared with the digital and analogue computer solutions and a close agreement has been found between the analytical and the exact results.

In this paper we have discussed limits of the validity of Whitham's characteristic rule for finding successive positions of a shock in one space dimension. We start with an example for which the exact solution is known and show that the characteristic rule gives correct result only if the state behind the shock is uniform. Then we take the gas dynamic equations in two cases: one of a shock propagating through a stratified layer and other down a nonuniform tube and derive exact equations for the evolution of the shock amplitude along a shock path. These exact results are then compared with the results obtained by the characteristic rule. The characteristic rule not only incorrectly accounts for the deviation of the state behind the shock from a uniform state but also gives a coefficient in the equation which differ significantly from the exact coefficients for a wide range of values of the shock strength.
