Based on the lack of electromyographic researches on sport and programmes of physical conditioning, we can say that it is necessary to reexamine some exercises routinely used in the programmes of physical conditioning. Thus, the trapezius and serratus anterior muscles were studied electromyographically so that we could evaluate the validity in some ways of execution of the frontal-lateral cross, dumbbells exercises for the development of these muscles. We analyzed 24 male volunteers, 18 to 25 years old, using a 2-channel TECA TE 4 electromyograph and Hewlett Packard surface electrodes. For the execution of the exercise it was used a supine bench, a straight board and two bars of 40 cm made of light wood. The results showed that TS acted preferentially in standing modality and in the inclined supine modality, however with activity levels that do not justify its inclusion in physical fitness programmes.

The trapezius and serratus anterior muscles were studied in four modalities of rowing exercises executed with two grips, middle and closed, in comparison with the four different modalities of frontal-lateral cross, dumbbells exercise. It was used 24 male volunteers, 18 to 25 years old using a 2-channel TECA TE 4 electromyograph and Hewlett Packard surface electrodes. The results showed that TS acted in a higher significant way in all the modalities of rowing than in the supine lateral raise, inclined supine lateral raise and reverse supine lateral raise, dumbbells exercises, and demonstrated no standing frontal-lateral cross, dumbbells. The SI acted more significantly difference among all the execution modalities of rowing and the inclined supine lateral raise, dumbbells exercises than in all the rowing exercises; even though the activity levels do not make us suggest them as an excellent group of exercises for the development of this muscle.

The electromyographic activity of the shoulder muscles deltoid - anterior portion (DA) and pectoralis major - clavicular portion (PMC) was tested on 24 male volunteers using a 2 channel TEC A TE4 electromyograph and Hewlett Packard surface electrodes during the execution of four different modalities of frontal-lateral cross, dumbbells exercises. The results showed that all of the tested exercises developed high levels of action potential for both muscles. So, we jusfity the indication of all of them for physical fitness programmes for DA and PMC. Some suggestions to the use of the tested exercises are presented.

The action potential level for shoulder muscles deltoid-anterior portion (DA) and pectoralis major-clavicular portion (PMC) determined by four different modalities of execution of rowing exercises, each one with two different grips, was recorded. These were compared with the action potential level determined for the same muscles by four different modalities of execution of the frontal-lateral cross, dumbbells exercises. Twenty-four male volunteers were examined using a 2 channel TECA TE4 electromyograph and Hewlett Packard surface electrodes. The statistic analysis showed significant (p<0,05) superiority for all the frontal-lateral cross, dumbbells exercises in comparison to all rowing exercises for the PMC, for the DA this generalized supremacy was not observed.

We have reported that ingesting a meal immediately after exercise increased skeletal muscle accretion and less adipose tissue accumulation in rats employed in a 10 week resistance exercise program. We hypothesized that a possible increase in the resting metabolic rate (RMR) as a result of the larger skeletal muscle mass might be responsible for the less adipose deposition. Therefore, the effect of the timing of a protein supplement after resistance exercise on body composition and the RMR was investigated in 17 slightly overweight men. The subjects participated in a 12-week weight reduction program consisting of mild energy restriction (17% energy intake reduction) and a light resistance exercise using a pair of dumbbells (3-5 kg). The subjects were assigned to two groups. Group S ingested a protein supplement (10 g protein, 7 g carbohydrate, 3.3 g fat and one-third of recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamins and minerals) immediately after exercise. Group C did not ingest the supplement. Daily intake of both energy and protein was equal between the two groups and the protein intake met the RDA. After 12 weeks, the bodyweight, skinfold thickness, girth of waist and hip and percentage bodyfat significantly decreased in the both groups, however, no significant differences were observed between the groups. The fat-free mass significantly decreased in C, whereas its decrease in S was not significant. The RMR and post-meal total energy output significantly increased in S, while these variables did not change in C. In addition, the urinary nitrogen excretion tended to increase in C but not in S. These results suggest that the RMR increase observed in S might be associated with an increase in body protein synthesis.

Biogenic silica is used to describe compounds of hydrated silica (SiO2.nH2O), with specific shapes and sizes, deposited in plants. The chemical composition of biogenic silica and its stability in Jaraguá grass was studied in increasing concentration of NaOH. The analytical results demonstrated high concentration of Si, Al, Fe, Mg, P and low of Cu, Cd and Zn in the phytoliths composition. The silica bodies stability in NaOH solution with increasing concentration was different among the shapes and sizes. Silicified stomata and silicified plant tissues were dissolved along with the dumbbells because they are the less stable forms of biogenic silica.

Small glassy spheres, ellipsoids, teardrops, cylinders and dumbbells occur in large numbers in Tertiary deep sea clays cored in the northeastern Pacific by the Deep Sea Drilling Project. These objects morphologically resemble microtektites, but have the composition of an oceanic tholeiite. On the basis of their composition and stratigraphic relationship it is considered that they are of volcanic origin and most likely have been formed in deep water by submarine volcanic processes.

Petrographic and stable-isotope (d13C, d18O) patterns of carbonates from the Logatchev Hydrothermal Field (LHF), the Gakkel Ridge (GR), and a Late Devonian outcrop from the Frankenwald (Germany) were compared in an attempt to understand the genesis of carbonate minerals in marine volcanic rocks. Specifically, were the carbonate samples from modern sea floor settings and the Devonian analog of hydrothermal origin, low-temperature abiogenic origin (as inferred for aragonite in serpentinites from elsewhere on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge), or biogenic origin? Aragonite is the most abundant carbonate mineral in serpentinites from the two modern spreading ridges and occurs within massive sulfides of the LHF. The precipitation and preservation of aragonite suggests high Mg2+ and sulfate concentrations in fluids. Values of d18OPDB as high as +5.3 per mill for serpentinite-hosted aragonite and as high as +4.2 per mill for sulfide-hosted aragonite are consistent with precipitation from cold seawater. Most of the corresponding d13C values indicate a marine carbon source, whereas d13C values for sulfide-hosted aragonite as high as +3.6 per mill may reflect residual carbon dioxide in the zone of methanogenesis. Calcite veins from the LHF, by contrast, have low d18OPDB (-20.0 per mill to -16.1 per mill) and d13C values (-5.8 per mill to -4.5 per mill), indicative of precipitation from hydrothermal solutions (~129°-186°C) dominated by magmatic CO2. Calcite formation was probably favored by fluid rock interactions at elevated temperatures, which tend to remove solutes that inhibit calcite precipitation in seawater (Mg2+ and sulfate). Devonian Frankenwald calcites show low d18O values, reflecting diagenetic and metamorphic overprinting. Values of d13C around 0 per mill for basalt-hosted calcite indicate seawater-derived inorganic carbon, whereas d13C values for serpentinite-hosted calcite agree with mantle-derived CO2 (for values as low as -6 per mill) with a contribution of amagmatic carbon (for values as low as -8.6 per mill), presumably methane. Secondary mineral phases from the LHF for which a biogenic origin appears feasible include dolomite dumbbells, clotted carbonate, and a network of iron- and silica-rich filaments.

The long-term biostability of a novel thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (Elast-Eon(TM) 2 80A) synthesized using poly(hexamethylene oxide) (PHMO) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) macrodiols has been studied using an in vivo ovine model. The material's biostability was compared with that of three commercially available control materials, Pellethane(R) 2363-80A, Pellethane(R) 2363-55D and Bionate(R) 55D, after subcutaneous implantation of strained compression moulded flat sheet dumbbells in sheep for periods ranging from 3 to 24 months. Scanning electron microscopy, attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to assess changes in the surface chemical structure and morphology of the materials. Gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry and tensile testing were used to examine changes in bulk characteristics of the materials. The results showed that the biostability of the soft flexible PDMS-based test polyurethane was significantly better than the control material of similar softness, Pellethane(R) 80A, and as good as or better than both of the harder commercially available negative control polyurethanes. Pellethane(R) 55D and Bionate(R) 55D. Changes observed in the surface of the Pellethane(R) materials were consistent with oxidation of the aliphatic polyether soft segment and hydrolysis of the urethane bonds joining hard to soft segment with degradation in Pellethane(R) 80A significantly more severe than that observed in Pellethane(R) 55D. Very minor changes were seen on the surfaces of the Elast-Eon(TM) 2 80A and Bionate(R) 55D materials. There was a general trend of molecular weight decreasing with time across all polymers and the molecular weights of all materials decreased at a similar relative rate. The polydispersity ratio, M-w/M-n, increased with time for all materials. Tensile tests indicated that UTS increased in Elast-Eon(TM) 2 80A and Bionate(R) 55D following implantation under strained conditions. However, ultimate strain decreased and elastic modulus increased in the explanted specimens of all three materials when compared with their unimplanted unstrained counterparts. The results indicate that a soft, flexible PDMS-based polyurethane synthesized using 20% PHMO and 80% PDMS macrodiols has excellent long-term biostability compared with commercially available polyurethanes. Recent work has focused on deepening our understanding of the molecular origins of the higher harmonics that arise in the shear stress response of polymeric liquids in large-amplitude oscillatory shear flow. For instance, these higher harmonics have been explained by just considering the orientation distribution of rigid dumbbells suspended in a Newtonian solvent. These dumbbells, when in dilute suspension, form the simplest relevant molecular model of polymer viscoelasticity, and this model specifically neglects interactions between the polymer molecules [R.B. Bird et al., J Chem Phys, 140, 074904 (2014)]. In this paper, we explore these interactions by examining the Curtiss-Bird model, a kinetic molecular theory designed specifically to account for the restricted motions that arise when polymer chains are concentrated, thus interacting and specifically, entangled. We begin our comparison using a heretofore ignored explicit analytical solution [Fan and Bird, JNNFM, 15, 341 (1984)]. For concentrated systems, the chain motion transverse to the chain axis is more restricted than along the axis. This anisotropy is described by the link tension coefficient, ε, for which several special cases arise: ε = 0 corresponds to reptation, ε > 1/8 to rod-climbing, 1/2 ≥ ε ≥ 3/4 to reasonable predictions for shear-thinning in steady simple shear flow, and ε = 1 to the dilute solution without hydrodynamic interaction. In this paper, we examine the shapes of the shear stress versus shear rate loops for the special cases ε = (0,1/8, 3/8,1) , and we compare these with those of rigid dumbbell and reptation model predictions.

The subject of the present work is the synthesis of novel nanoscale objects, designed for self-propulsion under external actuation. The synthesized objects present asymmetric hybrid particles, consisting of a magnetic core and polymer flagella and their hydrodynamic properties under the actuation by external magnetic fields are investigated. The single-domain ferromagnetic cobalt ferrite nanoparticles are prepared by thermal decomposition of a mixture of metalorganic complexes based on iron (III) cobalt (II) in non-polar solvents. Further modification of the particles includes the growth of the silver particle on the surface of the cobalt ferrite particle to form a dumbbell-shaped heterodimer. Different possible mechanisms of dumbbell formation are discussed. A polyelectrolyte tail with ability to adjust the persistence length of the polymer, and thus the stiffness of the tail, by variation of pH is attached to the particles. A polymer tail consisting of a polyacrylic acid chain is synthesized by hydrolysis of poly(tert-butyl acrylate) obtained by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). A functional thiol end-group enables selective attachment of the tail to the silver part of the dumbbell, resulting in an asymmetric functionalization of the dumbbells. The calculations on the propulsion force and the sperm number for the resulting particles reveal a theoretical possibility for the propelled motion. Under the actuation of the particles with flagella by alternating magnetic field an increase in the diffusion coefficient compared to non-actuated or non-functionalized particles is observed. Further development of such systems for application as nanomotors or in drug delivery is promising.
