The different oxidation states of chromium allow its bulk oxide form to be reducible, facilitating the oxygen vacancy formation process, which is a key property in applications such as catalysis. Similar to other useful oxides such as TiO2, and CeO2, the effect of substitutional metal dopants in bulk Cr2O3 and its effect on the electronic structure and oxygen vacancy formation are of interest, particularly in enhancing the latter. In this paper, density functional theory (DFT) calculations with a Hubbard + U correction (DFT+U) applied to the Cr 3d and O 2p states, are carried out on pure and metal-doped bulk Cr2O3 to examine the effect of doping on the electronic and geometric structure. The role of dopants in enhancing the reducibility of Cr2O3 is examined to promote oxygen vacancy formation. The dopants are Mg, Cu, Ni, and Zn, which have a formal +2 oxidation state in their bulk oxides. Given this difference in host and, dopant oxidation states, we show that to predict the correct ground state two metal dopants charge compensated with an oxygen vacancy are required. The second oxygen atom removed is termed "the active" oxygen vacancy and it is the energy required to remove this atom that is related to the reduction process. In all cases, we find that substitutional doping improves the oxygen vacancy formation of bulk Cr2O3 by lowering the energy cost.

The effects of Cr2O3 on the properties of (Zn, Co, Ta)-doped SnO2 varistors were investigated in this study. The samples with different Cr2O3 concentrations were sintered at 1400 degrees C for 2 h. The properties of (Zn, Co, Ta, Cr)-doped SnO2 varistors were evaluated by XRD. dilatornetry, SEM, I-V and impedance spectroscopy. DC electrical characterization showed a dramatic increase ill the breakdown electrical field and in the nonlinear coefficient with the increase in Cr2O3 concentration. The grain size was found to decrease from 13 to 5 mu m with increasing the Cr2O3 content. The impedance data, represented by means of Nyquist diagrams, show two time constants, one at low frequencies and the other at high frequencies. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. SnO2 based ceramics doped with 1.0 mol% ZnO, 1.0 mol% CoO, 0.1 mol% WO3 and 0.05 mol% Cr2O3 show varistor behavior with nonlinear coefficient alpha = 33, breakdown electric field E-B = 12.5 kV/cm, leakage current I = 0.63 mA/cm(2) and average grain size of 1.52 mu m. Experimental evidence shows that the addition of Cr2O3 improves the nonlinear properties of the samples significantly, the impedance data, represented by means of Nyquist diagrams, show a dramatic increase in the resistivity for the samples doped with Cr2O3. The broadband emission in the 1.2 similar to 1.6 mu m region from Li2O-Al2O3-ZnO-SiO2 ( LAZS) glass codoped with 0.01mol.% Cr2O3 and 1.0mol.% Bi2O3 when pumped by the 808nm laser at room temperature is not initiated from Cr4+ ions, but from bismuth, which is remarkably different from the results reported by Batchelor et al. The broad similar to 1300nm emission from Bi2O3-containing LAZS glasses possesses a FWHM ( Full Width at Half Maximum) more than 250nm and a fluorescent lifetime longer than 500 mu s when excited by the 808nm laser. These glasses might have the potential applications in the broadly tunable lasers and the broadband fiber amplifiers. (c) 2005 Optical Society of America.

Tin dioxide varistors doped with Coo, ZnO, Ta2O5 and Cr2O3 were prepared by the mixed oxide method. Temperature dependent impedance spectroscopy revealed two different activation energies, one at low frequencies and the other at high frequencies. These activation energies were associated with the adsorption and reaction of O-2 species at the grain boundary interface. We show that Cr2O3 improves the varistor properties, generating sites for the adsorption of O' and O at the grain boundary region. The O' and O defects are truly responsible for the barrier formation at the grain boundary interface. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

The influence of dopants commonly used in SnO2 varistor ceramics, such as CoO, Cr2O3 or Nb2O5, on the structural properties of SnO2 was investigated. Several SnO2-based ceramics containing only one of the dopants were prepared and characterized. Spectroscopic investigations [visible, near infrared (IR) and IR region] were performed to obtain information about dopants valence states inside the ceramics, as well as about their influence on electronic structure of the material. Structural properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and mechanisms of dopant incorporation were proposed. Obtained results were confirmed with results of the electrical measurements. Microstructural changes in doped ceramics were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis that showed great differences in densities, grain size, and morphology of the SnO2 ceramics depending on type of dopants and their distribution. The non-ohmic properties of the 98.90% SnO2+(1-x)%CoO+0.05% Cr2O3+0.05% Nb2O5+x% MnO2 varistor system (all of them in mol %), as well as the influence of the oxidizing and reducing atmosphere on this system were studied in this work. Experimental evidence indicates that the electrical properties of the varistor depend on the defects that occur at the grain boundary and on the adsorbed oxygen species such as O''(2), O'(2), O in this region. Thermal treatments at 900 degreesC in oxygen and nitrogen atmospheres indicated such a dependence with the values of the non-linearity coefficient (alpha) increasing under oxygen atmosphere, being reduced in nitrogen atmosphere and restored after a new treatment in oxygen atmosphere, presenting a reversibility in the process. EDS analysis accomplished by SEM showed the distribution of the oxides in the varistor matrix. (C) 2002 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

A new solid composite polymer electrolyte was reported by incorporating Azino-bis-(3-ethyl benzo thiazoline-6-sulphonate) ion [ABTS] as dopant in poly(vinylidene flouride) along with redox couple (1-/13-). Under certain conditions, the electrolyte composition forms brush like nano-rods while it is doped with Azino-bis-(3-ethly) benzo thiazoline-6-sulphonate) ion [ABTS], a pi-electron donor. The polymer electrolyte forms nanoscale interpenetrating network with the crystalline order of the polymer electrolyte that seems to be a desirable architecture for the active layer of the photoelectrochemical cell. With this new polymer electrolyte, dye-sensitized solar cell was fabricated using N3 dye absorbed over Ti02- nonoparticles (photoanode) and conducting carbon cement coated on the conducting press (FTO, photocathode). This polymer composite has been successfully used as a promising candidate as solid polymer electrolyte in nanocrystalline dye-sensitized solar cell.

New composite doped poly (ethylene oxide) polymer electrolyte was developed using 2-mercapto benzimidazole as plasticizer and iodide/triiodide as redox couple. The fabrication of the cell involves Poly(ethylene oxide)/ 2-mercapto benzimidazole / iodide/triiodide as polymer electrolyte in dye-sensitized solar cell fabricated with N3 dye and TiO2 nanoparticles as the photoanode and Platinum coated FTO (fluorine doped SnO2) as counter electrode. The current-volatage characteristics under simulated sunlight AM1.5 shows a short circuit current Isc of 8.7mA and open circuit photovoltage 508 mV. The conductivity measurements for the new polymer electrolyte and the photoelectrochemical measurments were carried out systematically. In 2-mercapto benzimidazole the electron rich sulphur and nitrogen atoms, act as pi-electron donors that form good interaction with iodine which plays a vital role in the performance of the fabricated dye-sensitized solar cells. The resonance effect increases the stability of the cell to a considerable extent. These results suggest that the new composite polymer electrolyte performs as a promising new doped polymer-electrolyte.

Pure Tungsten Oxide (WO3) and Iron-doped (10 at%) Tungsten Oxide (WO3:Fe) nanostructured thin films were prepared using a dual crucible Electron Beam Evaporation techniques. The films were deposited at room temperature in high vacuum condition on glass substrate and post-heat treated at 300 oC for 1 hour. From the study of X-ray diffraction and Raman the characteristics of the as-deposited WO3 and WO3:Fe films indicated non-crystalline nature. The surface roughness of all the films showed in the order of 2.5 nm as observed using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed tungsten oxide films with stoichiometry close to WO3. The addition of Fe to WO3 produced a smaller particle size and lower porosity as observed using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). A slight difference in optical band gap energies of 3.22 eV and 3.12 eV were found between the as-deposited WO3 and WO3:Fe films, respectively. However, the difference in the band gap energies of the annealed films were significantly higher having values of 3.12 eV and 2.61 eV for the WO3 and WO3:Fe films, respectively. The heat treated samples were investigated for gas sensing applications using noise spectroscopy and doping of Fe to WO3 reduced the sensitivity to certain gasses. Detailed study of the WO3 and WO3:Fe films gas sensing properties is the subject of another paper.

This paper explores the potential therapeutic role of the naturally occurring sugar heparan sulfate (HS) for the augmentation of bone repair. Scaffolds comprising fibrin glue loaded with 5 lg of embryonically derived HS were assessed, firstly as a release-reservoir, and secondly as a scaffold to stimulate bone regeneration in a critical size rat cranial defect. We show HS-loaded scaffolds have a uniform distribution of HS, which was readily released with a typical burst phase, quickly followed by a prolonged delivery lasting several days. Importantly, the released HS contributed to improved wound healing over a 3-month period as determined by microcomputed tomography (lCT) scanning, histology, histomorphometry, and PCR for osteogenic markers. In all cases, only minimal healing was observed after 1 and 3 months in the absence of HS. In contrast, marked healing was observed by 3 months following HS treatment, with nearly full closure of the defect site. PCR analysis showed significant increases in the gene expression of the osteogenic markers Runx2, alkaline phosphatase, and osteopontin in the heparin sulfate group compared with controls. These results further emphasize the important role HS plays in augmenting wound healing, and its successful delivery in a hydrogel provides a novel alternative to autologous bone graft and growth factorbased therapies.

Sodium niobates doped with different amount of tantalum (TaV) were prepared via thermal reaction process. It was found pure nanofibril and bar-like solids can be obtained when tantalum was introduced into the reaction system. For the well-crystallized fibril solids, the Na+ ions are difficult to be exchanged, and the radioactive ions such as Sr2+ and Ra2+ ions just deposit on the surface of the fibers during the sorption process, resulting in lower sorption capacity and distribution coefficients (Kd)`. However, the bar-like solids are poorly-crystallized and have lots of exchangeable Na+ ions. They are able to remove highly hazardous bivalent radioactive isotopes such as Sr2+ and Ra2+ ions. Even in the presence of lots of Na+ ions, they also have higher Kd. More importantly, such sorption finally intelligently triggers considerable collapse of the structure, resulting in the entrapment of the toxic bivalent cations permanently in the solids so that they can be safely disposed. This study highlights new opportunities for the preparation of Nb-based adsorbents to efficiently remove the toxic radioactive ions from contaminated water.

The indoline dyes D102, D131, D149, and D205 have been characterized when adsorved on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) and TiO2 electrode surfaces. Adsorption from 50:50 acetonitrile - tert-butanol onto flourine-doped tin oxide (FTO) allows approximate Langmuirian binding constants of 6.5 x 10(4), 2.01 x 10(3), 2.0 x 10(4), and 1.5 x 10(4) mol-1 dm3, respectively, to be determined. Voltammetric data obtained in acetonitrile/0.1 M NBu4PF6 indicate reversible on-electron oxidation at Emid = 0.94, 0.91, 0.88, and 0.88 V vs Ag/AgCI(3 M KCI), respectively, with dye aggregation (at high coverage) causing additional peak features at more positive potentials. Slow chemical degradation processes and electron transfer catalysis for iodine oxidation were observed for all four oxidezed indolinium cations. When adsorbed onto TiO2 nanoparticle films (ca. 9nm particle diameter and ca.3/um thickness of FTO0, reversible voltammetric responses with Emid = 1.08, 1.156, 0.92 and 0.95 V vs Ag/AgCI(3 M KCI), respectively, suggest exceptionally fast hole hopping diffusion (with Dapp > 5 x 10(-9) m2 s-1) for adsorbed layers of four indoline dyes, presumably due to pie-pie stacking in surface aggregates. Slow dye degradation is shown to affect charge transport via electron hopping. Spectrelectrochemical data for the adsorbed indoline dyes on FTO-TiO2 revealed a red-shift of absorption peaks after oxidation and the presence of a strong charge transfer band in the near-IR region. The implications of the indoline dye reactivity and fast hole mobility for solar cell devices are discussed.
