A method has been presented to establish the theoretical dispersion curve for performing the inverse analysis for the Rayleigh wave propagation. The proposed formulation is similar to the one available in literature, and is based on the finite difference formulation of the governing partial differential equations of motion. The method is framed in such a way that it ultimately leads to an Eigen value problem for which the solution can be obtained quite easily with respect to unknown frequency. The maximum absolute value of the vertical displacement at the ground surface is formed as the basis for deciding the governing mode of propagation. With the proposed technique, the numerical solutions were generated for a variety of problems, comprising of a number of different layers, associated with both ground and pavements. The results are found to be generally satisfactory. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The analysis of the dispersion equation for surface magnetoplasmons in the Faraday configuration for the degenerate case of decaying constants being equal is given from the point of view of understanding the non-existence of the “degenerate modes”. This analysis also shows that there exist well defined “degenerate points” on the dispersion curve with electromagnetic fields varying linearly over small distances taken away from the interface.

The control role of the relative phase between the probe and driving fields on gain, dispersion and populations in an open V-type three-level system with spontaneously generated coherence is studied. The result shows that by adjusting the value of the relative phase, the transformation between lasing with inversion and lasing without inversion (LWI) can be realized and high dispersion (refractive index) without absorption can be obtained. The shape and value range of the dispersion curve are similar to those of the gain curve, and this similarity is closely related to the relative phase. The effects of the atomic exit and injection rates and the incoherent pump rate on the control role of the relative phase are also analysed. It is found easier to get LWI by adjusting the value of the relative phase using the open system rather than the closed system, and using an incoherent pump rather than without using the incoherent pump. Moreover the open system can give a larger LWI gain than the closed system.

The paper discusses the dispersion relation for longitudinal electron waves propagating in a collisionless, homogeneous isotropic plasma, which contains both Maxwellian and suprathermal electrons. I t is found that the dispersion curve, known to have two separate branches for zero suprathermal energy spread, depends sensitively on this quantity. As the energy half-width of the suprathermal population increases, the branches approach each other until they touch at a connexion point, for a small critical value of that half-width. The topology of the dispersion curves is different for half-widths above and below critical; and this can affect the use of wave-propagation measurements as a diagnostic technique for the determination of the electron distribution function. Both the distance between the branches and spatial damping near the connexion frequency depend on the half-width, if below critical, and can be used to determine it. The theory is applied to experimental data.

Dielectric measurements carried out on drop casted from solution of emeraldine base form of polyaniline films in the temperature range 30-300 degrees C revealed occurrence of two maxima in the loss tangent as a function of temperature. The activation energies corresponding to these two relaxation processes were found to be similar to 0.5 eV and similar to 1.5 eV. The occurrence of one relaxation peak in the dispersion curve of the imaginary part of the electric modulus suggests the absence of microphase separation in the film. Thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopic measurements showed that the films retained its integrity up to 300 degrees C. The dielectric relaxation at higher temperatures with large activation energy of 1.5 eV is attributed to increase in the barrier potential due to decrease in the polymer conjugation as a result of wide amplitude motion of the chain segments well above the glass transition temperature. A number of spectral analysis of surface waves (SASW) tests were performed on asphaltic road pavements by dropping a metallic 6.5 kg sphere, from a height (H) ranging from 1 to 3 m. Various combinations of source to first receiver distance (S) and receiver spacing (X) were employed. By increasing the height of the fall of the dropping mass, the maximum wavelength (lambda(max)), up to which the shear wave velocity profile can be predicted with the usage of the SASW measurements, was found to increase continuously. The height of fall of the dropping mass also seems to affect the admissible range of the wavelength for given combinations of X and S. Irrespective of different chosen combinations of S, X and H, a unique combined dispersion curve was generated in all the cases for a given pavement site as long as the threshold minimum value of the coherence function is greater than 0.90.

A series of spectral analyses of surface waves (SASW) tests were conducted on a cement concrete pavement by dropping steel balls of four different values of diameter (D) varying between 25.4 and 76.2 mm. These tests were performed (1) by using different combinations of source to nearest receiver distance (S) and receiver spacing (X), and (2) for two different heights (H) of fall, namely, 0.25 and 0.50 m. The values of the maximum wavelength (lambda(max)) and minimum wavelength (lambda(min)) associated with the combined dispersion curve, corresponding to a particular combination of D and H, were noted to increase almost linearly with an increase in the magnitude of the input source energy (E). A continuous increase in strength and duration of the signals was noted to occur with an increase in the magnitude of D. Based on statistical analysis, two regression equations have been proposed to determine lambda(max) and lambda(min) for different values of source energy. It is concluded that the SASW technique is capable of producing nearly a unique dispersion curve irrespective of (1) diameters and heights of fall of the dropping masses used for producing the vibration, and (2) the spacing between different receivers. The results presented in this paper can be used to provide guidelines for deciding about the input source energy based on the required exploration zone of the pavement. A balloon tethered at an altitude of 20 km could deliver a particulate cloud leading to global cooling. Tethering a balloon at this altitude poses significant problems with respect to vibration and stability, especially in regions of high wind. No-one has ever proposed, yet alone launched, a balloon at an altitude of 20 km tethered to the ground. Owing to wind, the tether needs to be 23 km in length and is to be fixed to a ship at sea or on land in equatorial regions. Whilst the balloon at 20 km is subject to relatively modest wind conditions, at jet stream altitudes (10km) the tether will experience much higher wind loadings, not only because of the high wind speeds of up to 300 km / hr but also because of the high air density. A tether of circular cross section in these high winds will be subject to horizontal and downward drag forces that would bring the aerostat down. For this reason it is advantageous to consider a self-aligning tether of an aerodynamic cross section whereby it is possible to reduce the drag substantially. One disadvantage of a non-circular tether is the possibility of flutter and galloping instabilities. It is reasonably straightforward to model these phenomena for short lengths of aerofoil, but the situation becomes more complex for a 20 km tensioned tether with large deflection and curvature, variable wind speed, variable air density and variable tension. Analysis using models of infinite length are used to establish the stability at a local scale where the tension, aerodynamic and geometric properties are considered constant. Dispersion curve analysis is useful here. But for dynamics on a long-wavelength scale (several km) then a full non-linear analysis is required. This non-linear model can be used to establish the local values of tension appropriate for the dispersion analysis. This keynote presentation will give some insight into these issues.

We designed a two-dimensional coupled photonic crystal resonator array with hexagonal lattice. The calculation by plane-wave-expansion method shows that the dispersion curve of coupled cavity modes in the bandgap are much flattened in all directions in the reciprocal space. We simulated the transmission spectra of transverse electric (TE) wave along the Gamma K direction. Compared with the PC single cavity structure, the transmission ratio of the coupled cavity array increases more than three orders of magnitude, while the group velocity decreases to below 1/10, reaching 0.007c. The slow wave effect has potential application in the field of miniaturized tunable optical delay components and low-threshold photonic crystal lasers.

A second-harmonic generation (SHG) is predicted for the Bogoliubov excitations in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate. It is shown that, because the linear dispersion curve of the excitations displays two branches, the phase-matching condition for the SHG can be fulfilled if the wave vectors and frequencies of fundamental and second-harmonic waves are selected suitably from different branches. The nonlinearly coupled envelope equations for the SHG are derived by using a method of multiple scales. The explicit solutions of these envelope equations are provided and the conversion efficiency of the SHG is also discussed.

The conventional microtremor survey is based on the single point of exploration, which includes collecting field data, estimating the phase velocity, investing the dispersion curve and obtaining the S–wave velocity structure. In the case of large-scale exploration, and when making the two-dimensional velocity section, the inversion is quite time-consuming, laborious and its precision depends on the subjective interpretation, which makes the results differently from person to person. In fact,we do not need the S-wave velocity values but only need the relative variation of velocity. For these reasons, this paper is desired to calculate the apparent S-wave velocity (Vx) to replace the S-wave velocity inversion and to obtain the relative variation of the S-wave velocity. Using this method, we can decrease the analysts’ effect, shorten the data processing time and improve work efficiency. The apparent S-wave velocity is a variable of the surface wave property, which can clearly reflect the downcast columns, mined-out areas and other unusual geological bodies. In this paper, Matlab is used to establish the three-dimensional data volume of the apparent S-wave velocity, from which we can get any apparent S-wave velocity section we need. Through the application case, the designed method is proved to be reliable and effective. The downcast columns, mined-out areas and other unusual geological bodies can be clearly showed in the apparent S-wave velocity section. And from the contour of the apparent S-wave velocity, the interface shape of the major target layers can be controlled basically.

This work comprises three different types of unconventional correlated systems.rnChapters 3-5 of this work are about the open shell compounds Rb4O6 and Cs4O6. These mixed valent compounds contain oxygen in two different modifications: the closed-shell peroxide anion is nonmagnetic, whereas the hyperoxide anion contains an unpaired electrons in an antibonding pi*-orbital. Due to this electron magnetic ordering is rendered possible. In contrast to theoretical predictions, which suggested half-metallic ferromagnetism for Rb4O6,rndominating antiferromagnetic interactions were found in the experiment. Besidesrna symmetry reduction due to the mixed valency, strong electronic correlations of this highly molecular system determine its properties; it is a magnetically frustrated insulator. The corresponding Cs4O6 was found to show similar properties.rnChapters 6-9 of this work are about intermetallic Heusler superconductors. rnAll of these superconductors were rationally designed using the van Hove scenario as a working recipe. A saddle point in the energy dispersion curve of a solid leads to a van Hove singularity in the density of states. In the Ni-based and Pd-based Heusler superconductors presented in this work this sort of a valence instability occurs at the high-symmetry L point and coincides or nearly coincides with the Fermi level. The compounds escape the high density of states at the Fermi energy through a transition into the correlated superconducting state.rnChapter 10 of this work is about the tetragonally distorted ferrimagnetic DO22 phase of Mn3Ga. This hard-magnetic modification is technologically useful for spin torque transfer applications. The phase exhibits two different crystallographic sites that are occupied by Mn atoms and can thus be written as Mn2MnGa. The competition between the mainly itinerant moments of the Mn atoms at the Wyckoff position 4d and the localized moments of the Mn atoms at the Wyckoff position 2b leads to magnetic correlations. The antiferromagnetic orientation of these moments determines the compound to exhibit a resulting magnetic moment of approximately 1 µB per formula unit in a partially compensated ferrimagnetic configuration.

The prediction of train induced vibration levels in structures close to railway tracks before track construction starts is important in order to avoid having to implement costly mitigation measures afterwards. The used models require an accurate characterization of the propagation medium i.e. the soil layers. To this end the spectral analysis of surface waves (SASW) method has been chosen among the active surface waves techniques available. As dynamic source a modal sledge hammer has been used. The generated vibrations have been measured at known offsets by means of several accelerometers. There are many parameters involved in estimating the experimental dispersion curve and, later on, thickness and propagation velocities of the different layers. Tests have been carried out at the Segovia railway station. Its main building covers some of the railway tracks and vibration problems in the building should be avoided. In the paper these tests as well as the influence of several parameters on the estimated soil profile will be detailed.

ABSTRACT In South Campus at Polytechnic University of Madrid, a project has been carried out to obtain a proper subsoil description by applying ReMi tests, in collaboration with the Department of Geophysics of the National Geographic Institute. Through geophysical tests conducted locally, the ReMi (Refraction Microtremor) technique allows to establish the physical parameters of soil, which are of special interest in the field of civil engineering. This technique is part of passive seismic methods, often used in geophysical prospecting. It focuses in obtaining the underlying model of propagation velocity distribution of the shear wave according to depth and has the advantage of being able to use seismic ambient noise as a source of energy. It was developed in the Nevada Seismological Laboratory (USA) by Louie (2001) as an innovative technique for obtaining propagation velocities experimentally. It has several other advantages, including the direct observation of the dispersion of surface waves, which allows to reliably measure S wave velocity. This is a non-invasive, low cost and good resolution method, which can be applied in urban or sensitive environments where other prospection methods present difficulties. The propagation velocity of shear waves in the first 30 meters Vs30 is widely recognized as a valid equivalent parameter to geotechnically characterize the subsurface. It is mathematically related to surface wave's velocity of propagation, which are to observe using REMI technique. Spectral analysis of acquired data sets up a model represented by the dispersion curve at each site, so that, using an inversion process, propagation velocity model in relation to depth is obtained. Through this models, other seismologically interesting parameters can be obtained. These results are represented on isometric maps in order to obtain a spatial relationship between them, a process which is known as seismic zonation. This analysis infers that Vs30 at South Campus is not alarmingly low , corresponding with subsequent results of seismic amplification, fundamental period of resonance of soil and depth of bedrock. Ultimately, it's found that calculated values of soil's fundamental periods at which maximum seismic amplification occurs, may possibly match fundamental periods of some Campus buildings.
