In this paper we propose the use of Discrete Cosine Transform Type-III (DCT3) for multicarrier modulation. There are two DCT3 (even and odd) and, for each of them, we derive the expressions for both prefix and suffix to be appended into each data symbol to be transmitted. Moreover, DCT3 are closely related to the corresponding inverse DCT Type-II even and odd. Furthermore, we give explicit expressions for the 1-tap per subcarrier equalizers that must be implemented at the receiver to perform the channel equalization in the frequency-domain. As a result, the proposed DCT3-based multicarrier modulator can be used as an alternative to DFT-based systems to perform Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing or Discrete Multitone Modulation

This paper presents a new low-complexity multicarrier modulation (MCM) technique based on lattices which achieves a peak-to-average power ratio (PAR) as low as three. The scheme can be viewed as a drop in replacement for the discrete multitone (DMT) modulation of an asymmetric digital subscriber line modem. We show that the lattice-MCM retains many of the attractive features of sinusoidal-MCM, and does so with lower implementation complexity, O(N), compared with DMT, which requires O(N log N) operations. We also present techniques for narrowband interference rejection and power profiling. Simulation studies confirm that performance of the lattice-MCM is superior, even compared with recent techniques for PAR reduction in DMT.

This letter considers clip-limited transmission over multiple-input multiple-output digital subscriber lines (MIMO-DSL). We show that a recent low complexity, low peak-to-average-ratio (PAR) single-input modulation technique can be applied to the case of multiple cross-talking channels in a bonded-DSL system. Unfortunately however the direct initialization procedure is computationally infeasible. In this paper, we provide a novel low-complexity initialization procedure. Simulations confirm that the proposed approach has superior performance in clip-limited conditions, compared with both discrete matrix multitone and vectored discrete multitone.

In Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing and Discrete Multitone transceivers, a guard interval called Cyclic Prefix (CP) is inserted to avoid inter-symbol interference. The length of the CP is usually greater than the impulse response of the channel resulting in a loss of useful data carriers. In order to avoid long CP, a time domain equalizer is used to shorten the channel. In this paper, we propose a method to include a delay in the zero-forcing equalizer and obtain an optimal value of the delay, based on the location of zeros of the channel. The performance of the algorithms is studied using numerical simulations.

We propose a mixed cost-function adaptive initialization algorithm for the time domain equalizer in a discrete multitone (DMT)-based asymmetric digital subscriber line. Using our approach, a higher convergence rate than that of the commonly used least-mean square algorithm is obtained, whilst attaining bit rates close to the optimum maximum shortening SNR and the upper bound SNR. Furthermore, our proposed method outperforms the minimum mean-squared error design for a range of time domain equalizer (TEQ) filter lengths. The improved performance outweighs the small increase in computational complexity required. A block variant of our proposed algorithm is also presented to overcome the increased latency imposed on the feedback path of the adaptive system.

Previous studies found larger attentional modulation of acoustic blinks during task-relevant than during task-irrelevant acoustic or visual, but not tactile, lead stimuli. Moreover, blink modulation was larger overall during acoustic lead stimuli. The present experiment investigated whether these results reflect modality specificity of attentional blink modulation or effects of continuous stimulation. Participants performed a discrimination and counting task with acoustic, visual, or tactile lead stimuli. Stimuli were presented Sustained or consisted of two short discrete stimuli. The sustained condition replicated previous results. In the discrete condition, blinks were larger during task-relevant than during task-irrelevant stimuli in all groups regardless of lead stimulus modality. Thus, previous results that seemed consistent with modality-specific accounts of attentional blink modulation reflect effects of continuous stimulus input.

This paper presents a systematic method of investigating the existence of limit cycle oscillations in feedback systems with combined integral pulse frequency-pulse width (IPF-P/V) modulation. The method is based on the non-linear discrete equivalence of the continuous feedback system containing the IPF-PW modulator.

The throughput-optimal discrete-rate adaptation policy, when nodes are subject to constraints on the average power and bit error rate, is governed by a power control parameter, for which a closed-form characterization has remained an open problem. The parameter is essential in determining the rate adaptation thresholds and the transmit rate and power at any time, and ensuring adherence to the power constraint. We derive novel insightful bounds and approximations that characterize the power control parameter and the throughput in closed-form. The results are comprehensive as they apply to the general class of Nakagami-m (m >= 1) fading channels, which includes Rayleigh fading, uncoded and coded modulation, and single and multi-node systems with selection. The results are appealing as they are provably tight in the asymptotic large average power regime, and are designed and verified to be accurate even for smaller average powers.

Temperature-dependent modulation characteristics of 1.3 mu m InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) lasers under small signals have been carefully studied at various bias currents. Based on experimental observations, it is found that the modulation bandwidth significantly increases when excited state (ES) lasing emerges at high temperature. This is attributed to additional photons emitted by ES lasing which contribute to the modulation response. A rate equation model including two discrete electron energy levels and the level of wetting layer has been used to investigate the temperature-dependent dynamic behavior of the QD lasers. Numerical investigations confirm that the significant jump for the small signal modulation response is indeed caused by ES photons. Furthermore, we identify how the electron occupation probabilities of the two discrete energy levels can influence the photon density of different states and finally the modulation rate. Both experiments and numerical analysis show that the modulation bandwidth of QD lasers at high temperature can be increased by injecting more carriers into the ES that has larger electron state degeneracy and faster carrier's relaxation time than the ground state.

Two major signaling pathways, those triggered by estrogen (E(2)) and by the Wnt family, interact in the breast to cause growth and differentiation. The estrogen receptors ER(alpha) and ER(beta) are activated by binding E(2) and act as ligand-dependent transcription factors. The effector for the Wnt family is the Tcf family of transcription factors. Both sets of transcription factors recognize discrete but different nucleotide sequences in the promoters of their target genes. By using transient transfections of reporter constructs for the osteopontin and thymidine kinase promoters in rat mammary cells, we show that Tcf-4 antagonizes and Tcf-1 stimulates the effects of activated ER/E(2). For mutants of the former promoter, the stimulatory effects of ER(alpha)/E(2) can be made to be dependent on Tcf-1, and for the latter promoter the effects of the T cell factors (TCFs) are dependent on ER/E(2). Direct interaction between ERs and Tcfs either at the Tcf/ER(alpha)-binding site on the DNA or in the absence of DNA is established by gel retardation assays or by coimmunoprecipitation/biosensor methods, respectively. These results show that the two sets of transcription factors can interact directly, the interaction between ERs and Tcf-4 being antagonistic and that between ERs and Tcf-1 being synergistic on the activity of the promoters employed. Since Tcf-4 is the major Tcf family member in the breast, it is suggested that the antagonistic interaction is normally dominant in vivo in this tissue.

Traditional retinal projections target three functionally complementary systems it) the brain of mammals: the primary visual system, the visuomotor integration systems and the circadian timing system. In recent years, studies in several animals have been conducted to investigate the retinal projections to these three systems, despite some evidence of additional targets. The aim of this study was to disclose a previously unknown connection between the retina and the parabrachial complex of the common marmoset, by means of the intraocular injection of cholera toxin Subunit b. A few labeled retinal fibers/terminals that are detected in the medial parabrachial portion of the marmoset brain show clear varicosities, Suggesting terminal fields. Although the possible role of these projections remains unknown, they may provide a modulation of the cholinergic parabrachial neurons which project to the thalamic dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus. The presence and localization of the anti-inflammatory protein annexin 1 (also known as lipocortin 1) in perivenular rat mast cells was investigated here. Using the rat mesenteric microvascular bed and a combination of morphologic techniques ranging from immunofluorescence to electron microscopy analyses, we detected the presence of annexin 1 in discrete intracellular sites, both in the nucleus and in the cytoplasm. In resting mast cells, most of the protein pool (approximately 80% of the cytosolic portion) was localized to cytoplasmic granules. In agreement with other cell types, treatment of rats with dexamethasone (0.2 mg/kg, ip) increased annexin 1 expression in mast cells, inducing a remarkable appearance of dusters of protein immunoreactivity. This effect was most likely the result of de novo protein synthesis as determined by an increase in mRNA seen by in situ hybridization. Triggering an ongoing experimental inflammatory response (0.3 mg of carrageenin, ip) increased annexin 1 mRNA and protein levels. In conclusion, we report for the first time the localization of annexin 1 in connective tissue mast cells, and its susceptibility not only to glucocorticoid hormone treatment, but also to an experimental acute inflammatory response.
