A study has been made of the differential thermal analysis of (i) potassium perchlorate in powdered form, (ii) potassium perchlorate in pelletized form, (iii) potassium perchlorate recrystallized from liquid NH3, and (iv) potassium perchlorate preheated for 24 hours at 375°. Pretreatment of potassium perchlorate leads to a desensitization of both endothermic and exothermic processes. Additionally, the pretreatment tends to convert the symmetric exotherm into an asymmetric exotherm due to merging of the two exotherms. An analysis of the factors causing asymmetry in the exotherm has thrown fresh light on the mechanism of thermal decomposition of potassium perchlorate.

The present study has examined the thermodynamics of MgAl2O4 and MgO formations in Al–Mg alloy/quartz (>99% crystalline silica) through differential thermal analysis (DTA). The formation of MgAl2O4 and MgO is detected as exothermic peaks in the heat flow curve and the reaction is confirmed by the Si dissolution peaks observed during the reheating of samples and SEM analysis of the reacted sample. The presence of MgAl2O4 and MgO is confirmed in the XRD analysis of the reacted sample. The study has enabled the production of nano sized MgAl2O4 and MgO crystals at the interface of Al–Mg alloy and quartz. The reaction between them is found to be influenced by the oxidation of Mg, which is reduced by increasing heating rates.

Upon heating, hydrated magnesium carbonates (HMCs) undergo a continuous sequence of decomposition reactions. This study aims to investigate the thermal decomposition of various commercially produced HMCs classified as light and heavy, highlight their differences, and provide an insight into their compositions in accordance with the results obtained from thermal analysis and microstructure studies. An understanding of the chemical compositions and microstructures, and a better knowledge of the reactions that take place during the decomposition of HMCs were achieved through the use of SEM, XRD, and TG/differential thermal analysis (DTA). The quantification of their CO 2 contents was provided by TG and dissolving the samples in HCl acid. Results show that variations exist within the microstructure and decomposition patterns of the two groups of HMCs, which do not exactly fit into the fixed stoichiometry of the known HMCs in the MgO-CO2-H2O system. The occurrence of an exothermic DTA peak was only observed for the heavy HMCs, which was attributed to their high CO2 contents and the relatively delayed decomposition pattern. © 2013 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.

Studies by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) of the complexes [PtCl2L2] (L is PPh3, AsPh3, SbPh3), [PtLn] (n = 3, L is SbPh3; n = 4, L is PPh3, AsPh3); [(PtL3)2N2]; [(PtL3)2C2] and [Pt(CO)2L2] (L is SbPh3) are described. Analysis of the TG and DTA curves showed that Pt(II) complexes of the type [PtCl2L2] have a higher thermal stability than the corresponding Pt(0) complexes of the type [PtLn], with the exception of [Pt(SbPh3)3], which is more stable than [PtCl2(SbPh3)2]. Thermal stabilities of each of the complexes are compared with those of the others in the series. Mechanisms of thermal decomposition of complexes of the types [PtCl2L2] and [PtLn] are proposed. Residues of the samples were characterized by chemical tests and IR spectroscopy. The residue from the thermal decomposition of [PtCl2L2] (L is PPh3, AsPh3) and [Pt(PPh3)4] is metallic platinum. For [Pt(AsPh3)4] the residue is a mixture of Pt and As, whereas for the complexes containing SbPh3 the residues are mixtures of Pt and Sb. In these cases, the proportional contents of Pt and As or Pt and Sb correspond to the stoichiometry of these elements in the respective complexes. The complexes {[Pt(SbPh3)3]2N2}, {[Pt(SbPh3)3]2C2} lose N2 or the ethynediyl group at 130-150°C and are transformed into [Pt(SbPh3)3]. © 1995.

We demonstrate the broadband optical amplification in bismuth-doped strontium germanate glass with 808 nm and 980 nm laser diodes (LDs) as excitation sources. The net optical gain has been obtained within the wavelength region of 1272 to 1348 nm with 808 nm laser diode under 0.97 W power. The maximum gain and gain coefficients are 1.23 and 1.03 cm(-1) at 1315 nm, respectively. The signal increment at 1300 nm is 2.8 times with 980 nm LD, under 3 W power. The differential thermal analysis measurement reveals the good thermal stability of the studied glass. This glass could be suggested as a promising gain medium for broadband optical amplifiers.

The thermal behavior of blends of poly(vinylidene fluoride), or PVDF, and poly(o-methoxyaniline) doped with toluene sulfonic acid was studied by thermogravimetic analysis, electrical conductivity measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Blends with thermal and electrical conductivity stabler than the conductive polymer alone were obtained. Nevertheless, degradation occurs after a long period of time (500 h) at high temperatures. The possible association of the conductivity decay with dopant loss, degradation and structural and morphological changes of the blend is discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) has been used to obtain kinetic and nucleation parameters for polymer crystallization under a non-isothermal mode of operation. The available isothermal nucleation growth-rate equation has been modified for non-isothermal kinetic analysis. The values of the nucleation constant (K g ) and surface free energies (sgr, sgr e ) have been obtained for i-polybutene-1, i-polypropylene, poly(L-lactic acid), and polyoxymethylene and are compared with those obtained from isothermal kinetic analysis; a good agreement in both is seen.

A new thermal model based on Fourier series expansion method has been presented for dynamic thermal analysis on power devices. The thermal model based on the Fourier series method has been programmed in MATLAB SIMULINK and integrated with a physics-based electrical model previously reported. The model was verified for accuracy using a two-dimensional Fourier model and a two-dimensional finite difference model for comparison. To validate this thermal model, experiments using a 600V 50A IGBT module switching an inductive load, has been completed under high frequency operation. The result of the thermal measurement shows an excellent match with the simulated temperature variations and temperature time-response within the power module. ©2008 IEEE.

Molar heat capacities of ibuprofen were precisely measured with a small sample precision automated adiabatic calorimeter over the temperature range from 80 to 400 K. The polynomial functions of C-p,C-m (J K-1 mol(-1)) versus T were established on the heat capacity measurements by means of the least fitting square method. The functions are as follows: for solid ibuprofen, at the temperature range of 79.105 K less than or equal to T less than or equal to 333.297 K, C-p,C-m = 144.27 + 77.046X + 3.5171X(2) + 10.925X(3) + 11.224X(4), where X = (T - 206.201)/127.096; for liquid ibuprofen, at the temperature range of 353.406 K less than or equal to T less than or equal to 378.785 K, C-p,C-m = 325.79 + 8.9696X - 1.6073X(2) - 1.5145 X-3, where X = (T - 366.095)/12.690. A fusion transition at T = 348.02 K was found from the C-p-T curve. The molar enthalpy and entropy of the fusion transition were determined to be 26.65 kJ mol(-1) and 76.58 J mol(-1) K-1, respectively. The thermodynamic functions on the base of the reference temperature of 298.15 K, (H-T - H-298.15) and (S-T - S-298.15), were derived. Thermal characteristic of ibuprofen was studied by thermo-gravimetric analysis (TG-DTG) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The temperature of fusion, the molar enthalpy and entropy of fusion obtained by DSC were well consistent with those obtained by adiabatic calorimeter. The evaporation process of ibuprofen was investigated further by TG and DTG, and the activation energy of the evaporation process was determined to be 80.3 +/- 1.4 kJ mol(-1). (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) was irradiated by Co-60 gamma-rays (doses of 50, 100 and 200kGy) under vacuum. The thermal analysis of control and irradiated PHBV, under vacuum was carried out by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The tensile properties of control and irradiated PHBV were examined by using an Instron tensile testing machine. In the thermal degradation of control and irradiated PHBV, a one-step weight loss was observed. The derivative thermogravimetric curves of control and irradiated PHBV confirmed only one weight-loss step change. The onset degradation temperature (T-o) and the temperature of maximum weight-loss rate (T-p) of control and irradiated PHBV were in line with the heating rate (degreesC min(-1)). T-o and T-p of PHBV decreased with increasing radiation dose at the same heating rate. The DSC results showed that Co-60 gamma-radiation significantly affected the thermal properties of PHBV. With increasing radiation dose, the melting temperature (T-m) of PHBV shifted to a lower value, due to the decrease in crystal size. The tensile strength and fracture strain of the irradiated PHBV decreased, hence indicating an increased brittleness.

The thermal properties of ethylene propylene copolymer-grafted-acrylic acid (EP-g-AA) were investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Compared with the ethylene propylene copolymer (EP), the peak values of the melting temperature (T-m) of the propylene sequences in the grafted EP changed a little, the crystallization temperature (T-c) increased about 8-12 degrees C, and the melting enthalpy (Delta H-m) increased about 4-6 J/g. The isothermal crystallization kinetics of grafted and ungrafted samples was carried out by DSC. Within the scope of the researched crystallization temperature, the Avrami exponent (n) of the ungrafted sample was 1.6-1.8, and that of grafted samples were all above 2, which indicated that the grafted monomer could become the crystal nuclei for the crystallization of propylene sequence. With increasing grafted monomer content, the crystallization rate of propylene sequence in grafted EP increased; it might be the result of rapid nucleation rate and crystal growth rate.

The thermal properties of ethylene-propylene copolymer grafted with glycidyl methacrylate (EP-g-GMA) were investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Compared to the plain ethylene-propylene copolymer (EP), peak values of melting temperature (T-m) of the propylene sequences in the grafted EP changed a little, crystallization temperature (T-c) increased about 8-12 degrees C, and melting enthalpy (Delta H-m) increased about 4-6 J/g. The isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of grafted and ungrafted samples was carried out by DSC. Within the scope of the researched crystallization temperature, the Avrami exponent (n) of ungrafted sample is 1.6-1.8, and those of grafted samples are all above 2. The crystallization rates of propylene sequence in EP-g-GMA were faster than that in the plain EP and increased with increasing of grafted monomer content. It might be attributed to the results of rapid nucleation rate. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Cool materials are characterized by high solar reflectance and high thermal emittance; when applied to the external surface of a roof, they make it possible to limit the amount of solar irradiance absorbed by the roof, and to increase the rate of heat flux emitted by irradiation to the environment, especially during nighttime. However, a roof also releases heat by convection on its external surface; this mechanism is not negligible, and an incorrect evaluation of its entity might introduce significant inaccuracy in the assessment of the thermal performance of a cool roof, in terms of surface temperature and rate of heat flux transferred to the indoors. This issue is particularly relevant in numerical simulations, which are essential in the design stage, therefore it deserves adequate attention. In the present paper, a review of the most common algorithms used for the calculation of the convective heat transfer coefficient due to wind on horizontal building surfaces is presented. Then, with reference to a case study in Italy, the simulated results are compared to the outcomes of a measurement campaign. Hence, the most appropriate algorithms for the convective coefficient are identified, and the errors deriving by an incorrect selection of this coefficient are discussed.
