Letter - John Diefenbaker to Sean O'Sullivan, 17 November 1967

The letter mentions that Diefenbaker had just received a letter from O'Sullivan. Diefenbaker mentions that he will be leaving for New York where he will be honoured with the Shevchenko award at the World Conference of Free Ukrainians. He is being recognized for bringing world attention to the denial of freedom to Ukraine and to the Baltic States. He joins a list of past recipients that include: President Truman, President Eisenhower and Vice-President Humphrey.

Letters - Correspondence with John Diefenbaker, 1968

There is a telegram from John Diefenbaker congratulating Sean O'Sullivan on his recent election win as President of the Hamilton Young Progressive Conservatives. O'Sullivan was in Grade 11 at the time. The second correspondence is a reply from Sean O'Sullivan with appreciation to Diefenbaker for all his "encouragement and inspiration". The correspondence took place 19 March 1968 and 20 March 1968.

A letter from John Diefenbaker to Sean O'Sullivan following the election in 1968. Diefenbaker thanks O'Sullivan for his work for the Diefenbaker campaign in Prince Albert. He also mentions that O'Sullivan has "a knowledge of political issues that is amazing".

A letter from John Diefenbaker, 10 September 1965. It reads "I was delighted with your letter. Your loyalty is surpassed only by your enthusiasm. I hope all of our friends will work as hard as I know you will, and if so, we cannot fail. Keep up the good work, and I will look forward to seeing you during the campaign. With very best wishes"

John Smith, M.P fonds, 1930, 1949-1950, 1954, 1957-1962, n.d.

John Smith (1894-1977), son of Daniel Smith and Annie Douglas was a native of Scotland, immigrating to Canada in 1913. He first worked as a coach builder, then as a carpenter, finally developing his own contracting business. During WWI he served overseas with the 10th Battery, RCA as a sergeant. In 1924 Smith married Jean Wood, and together they had a daughter Irene (Hugh Langley). Smith first entered politics in 1940 serving as an alderman for the next 11 years. In 1954 he was elected mayor of the city of St. Catharines, and was twice returned to office by acclamation, serving until 1957 when he successfully ran as the Progressive Conservative candidate representing Lincoln County in the federal election. He won the election by a 10 000 vote majority. He served his constituents in Ottawa until he was defeated in the 1962 election. After leaving politics Mr. Smith was active in his community. He spearheaded the establishment of the St. Catharines Museum, and then was appointed its first director in 1966, serving in that capacity until 1972. He was an active member of the board of governors of the St. Catharines General Hospital and a life member and former president of the Lincoln County Humane Society. In 1971 he was voted Citizen of the Year for the city of St. Catharines. John Smith died on February 8, 1977 and was buried at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. Letter - Sean O'Sullivan to J. Diefenbaker, April 1968

The letter begins by thanking J. Diefenbaker for a personal note and other mementos. O'Sullivan then begins to discuss Trudeau and his popularity, he remarks "If he calls an early election, he will sweep the Country. Truly he is a phenomenon, thanks to the press of Canada. However, the press are a fickle lot and could easily turn their marriage to him into a divorce under the new rules he had Parliament pass." He also discusses his opinion of how the provinces will vote in an upcoming election.

Letter - Sean O'Sullivan to J. Diefenbaker, November 1969

A letter from Sean O'Sullivan to John Diefenbaker, 29 November 1969. O'Sullivan mentions a confrontation between Diefenbaker and Prime Minister Trudeau, during which Trudeau made an error and apologized to the House. Instead of seizing the moment to ridicule, Diefenbaker crossed the floor to accept the apology. O'Sullivan remarks "The gesture you made brought new honour to Parliament; an honour far too often lacking; and serves to remind all Canadians of the difference between a true leader and a petty political opportunist". He ends his letter by mentioning graffiti on the walls of Brock University that reads: "Mickey Mouse wears a Robert Stanfield watch".

Press Release - Youth for Diefenbaker, 1967

A press release from Youth for Diefenbaker, 1 August 1967. The release reads: "Hamilton Student Appointed Youth for Dief Representative. The youngest delegate to the conservative leadership convention, 15 year old Sean O'Sullivan of Hamilton, has been named Western Ontario representative of the Youth for Diefenbaker movement. This movement was formed in Ottawa to engage support of Canada's young conservatives for John Diefenbaker at the leadership convention. According to Mr. O'Sullivan, there is growing support for Mr. Diefenbaker and he will have an announcement to make in that regard at a press conference on Friday August Fourth at the Connaught Hotel."

Letter - Julian Porter to R.A. Brown 12 July 1967

A letter from Mr. Julian Porter to R.A. Brown of Longmans Green Publishing Company. The letter indicates that Mr. Porter was introduced to Sean O'Sullivan during a political function. Mr. O'Sullivan mentioned that he had written a manuscript about Mr. J. Diefenbaker. Mr. Porter suggests that Longmans Green Publishing Company take interest in the manuscript. The company eventually rejects the book due to it being "so highly personal". The publishing company also remarks "I am personally most impressed with Mr. O'Sullivan's sincerity. I can't imagine anything will stop him from eventually going into politics."

Letter - Cal Cavendish to Sean O'Sullivan, 25 May 1975

A letter from Cal Cavendish of Cavenidish Country in Calgary, Alberta. Cavendish has written a song about former prime minister R. Honourable John Diefenbaker. He has included the lyrics to his song. A few of the lyrics: "...Well it took a little while, but he reached his destiny, He was right, he was wrong, but he ran this big country. He didn't waste much time when he had a job to do, He worked the House of Commons like a prairie thrashing crew. Good old John, we heard you John, when a man got paid for the job when the job got done."
