Carbon modified by the reduction of aromatic diazonium derivatives was first used as electrode for the electrochemical stripping analysis of heavy metals. As a model, the glassy carbon electrode was modified with benzoic acid by electrochemical reduction of diazobenzoic acid, and the resulting modified electrodes were used for determination of Cd2+ and Pb2+. The anodic peak currents of cadmium and lead at the benzoic acid-modified glassy carbon electrode are 7.2 and 6 times of that at the bare glassy carbon electrode. A linear response was observed for Pb2+ and Cd2+ in the range of 0.5-50 mu g/l.

Syntheses and structural characterization of Ni(II) chelates of a new series of symmetric and unsymmetric tetradentate linear ligands are described. Preparative routes involve either the direct reaction between a metal complex and arene diazonium diazonium salts or a simple metal incorporation into the independently synthesized ligands. Recent X-ray structure determination of 4,9-dimethyl-5,8-diazadodeca-4,8-diene-2,11-dione-3,10-di(4′-methyl phenyl) hydrazonatonickel(II) complex reveals the geometry around the Ni(II) to be very close to square planar. The expected distortion because of the disposition of bulky aromatic groups on the neighbouring nitrogens is minimized by their projection in the opposite directions from the plane. PMP, IR and electronic spectral data for the complexes are quite in agreement with this structure.

In this paper, the fabrication of an active surf ace-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate by self-assembled silver nanoparticles on a monolayer of 4-aminophenyl-group-modified glassy carbon (GC) is reported. Silver nanoparticles are attached to the substrate through the electrostatic force between the negatively charged silver nanoparticles and the positively charged 4-aminophenyl groups on GC. The active SERS substrate has been characterized by means of tapping-mode atomic force microscopy (AFM), indicating that large quantities of silver nanoparticles are uniformly coated on the substrate. Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and p-aminothiophenol (p-ATP) are used as the probe molecules for SERS, resulting in high sensitivity to the SERS response, with the detection limit reaching as low as 10(-9) m. This approach is easily controlled and reproducible, and more importantly, can extend the range of usable substrates to carbon-based materials for SERS with high sensitivity.

4-Aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) was covalently grafted on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by amine cation radical formation during the electrooxidation process in 0.1 M KCl aqueous Solution. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement proves the presence of 4-carboxylphenylamine on the GCE. Electron transfer processes of Fe(CN)(6)(3-) in solutions of various pHs at the modified electrode are studied by both cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Changing the solution pH would result in the variation of the terminal group's charge state, based on which the surface pK(a) values were estimated. The copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) multilayer films were formed on 4-ABA/GCE prepared in aqueous solution, and which exhibit good electrochemical behavior with high stability.

4-Aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) was covalently grafted on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by amine cation radical formation in the electrooxidation process of the amino-containing compound. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement proves the presence of 4-carboxylphenylamine monolayer on the GCE. The redox responses of various electroactive probes were investigated on the 4-ABA-modified GCE. Electron transfer to Fe(CN)(6)(3-) in solutions of various pHs was studied by both cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance analysis on the modified electrode. Changes in the solution pH value result in the variation of the terminal group charge state, based on which surface pK(a) values are estimated. The 4-ABA-modified GCE was used as a suitable charged substrate to fabricate polyoxometalates-consisting (POM-consisting) monolayer and multilayer films through layer-by-layer assembly based on electrostatic attraction. Cyclic voltammetry shows the uniform growth of these three-dimensional multilayer films. Taking K10H3[Pr-(SiMo7W4O39)(2)]. H2O (abbreviated as Pr(SiMo7W4)(2)), for example, the preparation and electrochemical behavior of its monolayer and multilayer film had been investigated in detail. This modification strategy is proven to be a general one suitable for anchoring many kinds of POMs on the 4-ABA-modified GCE.

An electrochemically stable monolayer of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) was obtained for the first time. It was based on the electrostatic attachment of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) to the benzene sulfonic acid monolayer film, which was covalently bound onto glassy carbon electrode by the electrochemical reduction of diazobenzene sulfonic acid. The surface-confined Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) underwent reversible surface process, and reacted with the coreactant, tripropylamine, to produce electrochemiluminescence. In view of the stability of the electrode, the results strongly suggested that light was emitted from the surface-confined Ru(bpy)(3)(2+), not from the detached Ru(bpy)(3)(2+). The Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) modified electrode was used to the determination of tripropylamine. It showed good linearity in the concentration range from 5 muM to 1 muM with a detection limit of 1 muM (S/N = 4). The good stability of the Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) modified electrode also showed that the benzene sulfonic acid monolayer film prepared can be served as an excellent support to construct multilayers. In this paper, an organic-inorganic composite film of heteropolyanion was Formed by attaching a Keggin-type heteropolyanion, SiW12O404-, on carbon electrode surface derivatized by 4-aminophenyl monolayer. The composite film thus grafted on carbon electrode surface has good stability because of the ionic bonding character between SiW12O404- and surface aminophenyl groups. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and cyclic voltammetry were used to characterize the composite film. Compared with SiW12O404- electrodeposited on a bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE), the composite film gives three more sharp and well-defined redox couples attributed to two one- and two-electron processes, and the analyses of the voltammograms of SiW12O404- anion in the composite film modified on GCE shows that its surface coverage is close to a closest packing monolayer. STM characterization shows that a two-dimensional order heteropolyanion monolayer was formed on HOPG substrate. The composite film provides a favorable environment for electron and proton transfer between SiW12O404- ion and electrode surface, which may make it suitable for various applications in sensors and microelectronics devices.

A novel organic-inorganic composite film was formed by attaching Keegin-type heteropolyanion, SiW12O404- (devoted briefly as SiW12), on a glassy carbon electrode derivatized by 4-aminophenyl group. The composite film has an ionic bonding character between SiW12 and the surface amino group, which greatly improves the Blm stability and exhibits a more reversible electrochemical behavior. The modified electrode offers an excellent and stable electrocatalytic response for the reduction of nitrite. Possible mechanism was provided for the reaction of nitrite with SiW12O404-/aminophenyl composite film.

New poly(azo) amino-chitosan compounds were obtained from the azo coupling reaction of N-benzyl chitosan and diazonium salts. The thermal behavior of these compounds was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TG), differential thermogravimetric analysis (DTG), TG coupled with a Fourier-transform infrared, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). TG/DTG curves of chitin-chitosan polymer showed two thermal events attributed to water loss and decomposition of the polysaccharide after cross-linking reactions. Thermal analysis of the poly(azo) amino-chitosan compounds showed that the decomposition temperatures decreased when compared to the starting chitin-chitosan and N-benzyl chitosan. DSC results showed an agreement with the TG/DTG analyses. Thermal behavior of poly(azo) amino-chitosans suggest that these compounds could be considered as potential thermal sensors. © 2012 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.
