New tin(IV) complexes of empirical formula, Sn(NNS)I-3 (NNS = anionic forms of the 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde Schiff bases of S-methyl- and S-benzyldithiocarbazate) have been prepared and characterized by a variety of physico-chemical techniques. In the solid state, the Schiff bases exist as the thione tautomer but in solution and in the presence of tin(IV) iodide they convert to the thiol tautomer and coordinate to the tin atom in their deprotonated thiolate forms. The structures of the free ligand, Hqaldsbz and its triiodotin(IV) complex, [Sn(qaldsbz)I-3] have been determined by X-ray diffraction. The complex, [Sn(qaldsbz)I-3] has a distorted octahedral structure with the Schiff base coordinated to the tin atom as a uninegatively charged tridentate chelating agent via the quinoline nitrogen atom, the azomethine nitrogen atom and the thiolate sulfur atom. The three iodo ligands are coordinated meridionally to the tin atom. The distortion from an ideal octahedral geometry of [Sn(qaldsbz)I-3] is attributed to the restricted bite size of the tridentate Schiff base ligand. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

New mixed-ligand copper(II) complexes of empirical formulas [Cu(pysme)(sac) (CH3OH)] and [Cu(6mptsc)(sac)](2) have been synthesized and characterized by conductance, magnetic, IR and electronic spectroscopic techniques. X-ray crystallographic structure analyses of these complexes indicate that in both complexes the copper(II) ions adopt a five-coordinate distorted square-pyramidal geometry with an N3SO donor environment. The Schiff bases are coordinated to the copper(II) ions as tridentate NNS chelates via the pyridine nitrogen atom, the azomethine nitrogen atom and the thiolate sulfur atom. In the monomeric [Cu(pysme)(sac)(MeOH)] complex, the saccharinate anion acts as a monodentate ligand coordinating the copper(II) ion via the imino nitrogen atom whereas in the dimeric [Cu(6mptsc)(sac)](2) complex, the sac anion behaves as a bridging bidentate ligand providing the imino nitrogen donor atom to one of the copper(II) ions and the carbonyl oxygen as a weakly coordinated axial ligand atom to the other Cu(II) ion. In both complexes, the copper(II) ions have distorted square-pyramidal environments. The distortion from an ideal square-pyramidal geometry is attributed to the restricted bite angles of the planar tridentate ligand. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

New copper(II) complexes of general empirical formula, Cu(mpsme)X center dot xCH(3)COCH(3) (mpsme = anionic form of the 6-methyl-2-formylpyridine Schiff base of S-methyldithiocarbazate; X = Cl, N-3, NCS, NO3; x = 0, 0.5) have been synthesized and characterized by IR, electronic, EPR and susceptibility measurements. Room temperature mu(eff) values for the complexes are in the range 1.75-2.1 mu(beta) typical of uncoupled or weakly coupled Cu(II) centres. The EPR spectra of the [Cu(mpsme)X] (X = Cl, N-3, NO3, NCS) complexes reveal a tetragonally distorted coordination sphere around the mononuclear Cu(II) centre. We have exploited second derivative EPR spectra in conjunction with Fourier filtering (sine bell and Hamming functions) to extract all of the nitrogen hyperfine coupling matrices. While the X-ray crystallography of [Cu(mpsme)NCS] reveals a linear polymer in which the thiocyanate anion bridges the two copper(II) ions, the EPR spectra in solution are typical of a magnetically isolated monomeric Cu(II) centres indicating dissociation of the polymeric chain in solution. The structures of the free ligand, Hmpsme and the {[Cu(mpsme)NO3] center dot 0.5CH(3)COCH(3)}(2) and [Cu(mpsme)NCS](n) complexes have been determined by X-ray diffraction. The {[Cu(mpsme)NO3]0.5CH(3)COCH(3)}(2) complex is a centrosymmetric dimer in which each copper atom adopts a five-coordinate distorted square-pyramidal geometry with an N2OS2 coordination environment, the Schiff base coordinating as a uninegatively charged tridentate ligand chelating through the pyridine and azomethine nitrogen atoms and the thiolate, an oxygen atom of a unidentate nitrato ligand and a bridging sulfur atom from the second ligand completing the coordination sphere. The [Cu(mpsme)(NCS)](n) complex has a novel staircase-like one dimensional polymeric structure in which the NCS- ligands bridge two adjacent copper(II) ions asymmetrically in an end-to-end fashion providing its nitrogen atom to one copper and the sulfur atom to the other. New organometallic tin(IV) complexes of the empirical formula Sn(NNS)Ph2Cl (NNS = anionic forms of the 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde Schiff bases of S-methyl- and S-benzyldithiocarbazate) have been prepared and characterized by IR, electronic, I H NMR and ES mass spectroscopic techniques. The molecular structures of the 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde Schiff base of S-methyldithiocarbazate (Hqaldsme) and its diphenyltin(IV) complex, Sn(qaldsme)Ph2Cl, have been determined by X-ray diffraction. In the solid state, the ligand remains as the thione tautomer in which the dithiocarbazate chain adopts an E,E configuration and is almost coplanar with the quinoline ring. The Sn(qaldsme)Ph2Cl complex crystallizes in two distinctly different conformationally isomeric forms, each having the same space group but different lattice parameters. X-ray analysis shows that in each polymorph, the tin atom adopts a distorted octahedral geometry with the Schiff base coordinated to it as a uninegatively charged tridentate chelating agent via the quinoline nitrogen atom, the azomethine nitrogen atom and the thiolate sulfur atom. The two phenyl groups occupy axial positions and the chloride ligand occupies the sixth coordination position of the tin atom. The deprotonated ligand adopts an E,E,Z configuration in the complex. Two sets of Schiff base ligands, set-1 and set-2 have been prepared by mixing the respective diamine (1,2-propanediamine or 1,3-propanediamine) and carbonyl compounds (2-acetylpyridine or pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde) in 1:1 and 1:2 ratios, respectively and employed for the synthesis of complexes with Ni(II) perchlorate and Ni(II) thiocyanate. Ni(II) perchlorate yields the complexes having general formula [NiL2](ClO4)(2) (L = L-1 [N-1-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidine)-propane-1,3-diamine] for complex 1, L-2 [N-1-pyridine-2-ylmethylene-propane1,3-diamine] for complex 2 or L-3 [N-1-(1-pyridine-2-yl-ethylidine)-propane-1,2-diamine] for complex 3) in which the Schiff bases are mono-condensed terdentate whereas Ni(II) thiocyanate results in the formation of tetradentate Schiff base complexes, [NiL](SCN)(2) (L=L-4 [N,N'-bis-(1-pyridine-2-yl-ethylidine)-propane-1,3-diamine] for complex 4, L-5 [NN'-bis(pyridine-2-ylmethyline)-propane-1, 3-diamine] for complex 5 or L-6 [NN'-bis-(1-pyridine-2-yl-ethylidine)-propane- 1, 2-diamine] for complex 6) irrespective of the sets of ligands used. Formation of the complexes has been explained by anion modulation of cation templating effect. All the complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, spectral and electrochemical results. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies confirm the structures of four representative members, 1, 3, 4 and 5; all of them have distorted octahedral geometry around Ni(II). The bis-complexes of terdentate ligands, I and 3 are the mer isomers and the complexes of tetradentate ligands, 4 and 5 possess trans geometry. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Three di-Schiff-base ligands, N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine (H(2)Salpn), N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-pentanedianiine (H(2)Salpen) and N,N'-bis(salicylidine)-ethylenediamine (H(2)Salen) react with Ni(SCN)(2). 4H(2)O in 2:3 molar ratios to form the complexes; mononuclear [Ni(HSalpn)(NCS)(H2O)]center dot H2O (1a), trinuclear [{Ni(Salpen)}(2)Ni(NCS)(2)] (2b) and trinuclear [{Ni(Salen)}(2)Ni(NCS)(2)] (3) respectively. All the complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR and UV-VIS spectra, and room temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. The structures of la and 2b have been confirmed by X-ray single crystal analysis. In complex la, the Ni(II) atom is coordinated equatorially by the tetradentate, mononegative Schiff-base, HSalpn. Axial coordination of isothiocyanate group and a water molecule completes its octahedral geometry. The hydrogen atom attached to one of the oxygen atoms of the Schiff base is involved in a very strong hydrogen bond with a neighboring unit to form a centrosymmetric dimer. In 2b, two square planar [Ni(Salpen)] units act as bide mate oxygen donor ligands to a central Ni(II) which is also coordinated by two mutually cis N-bonded thiocyanate ligands to complete its distorted octahedral geometry. Complex 3 possesses a similar structure to that of 2b. A dehydrated form of la and a hydrated form of 2b have been obtained and characterized. The importance of electronic and steric factors in the variation of the structures is discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Three kinds of copper(II) azide complexes have been synthesised in excellent yields by reacting Cu(ClO4)(2) . 6H(2)O with N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (L-1); N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N',N'-dimethylethylenediamine (L-2); and N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N',N'-diethylethylenediamine (L-3), respectively, in the presence of slight excess of sodium azide. They are the monomeric Cu(L-1)(N-3)(ClO4) (1), the end-to-end diazido-bridged Cu-2(L-2)(2)(mu-1,3-N-3)(2)(ClO4)(2) (2) and the single azido-bridged (mu-1,3-) 1D chain [Cu(L-3)(mu-1,3-N-3)](n)(ClO4)(n) (3). The crystal and molecular structures of these complexes have been solved. The variable temperature magnetic moments of type 2 and type 3 complexes were studied. Temperature dependent susceptibility for 2 was fitted using the Bleaney-Bowers expression which led to the parameters J = -3.43 cm(-1) and R = 1 X 10(-5). The magnetic data for 3 were fitted to Baker's expression for S = 1/2 and the parameters obtained were J = 1.6 cm(-1) and R = 3.2 x 10(-4). Crystal data are as follows. Cu(L-1)(N-3)(ClO4): Chemical formula, C12H13ClN6O4Cu; crystal system, monoclinic; space group, P2(1)/c; a = 8.788(12), b = 13.045(15), c = 14.213(15) Angstrom; beta = 102.960(10)degrees; Z = 4. Cu(L-2)(mu-N-3)(ClO4): Chemical formula. C10H17ClN6O4Cu: crystal system, monoclinic; space group, P2(1)/c; a = 10.790(12), b = 8.568(9), c = 16.651(17) Angstrom; beta = 102.360(10)degrees; Z = 4. Resumo:
The novel praseodymium(III) complex [Pr(NO3)3L] (1), where L=N,N′-bis[1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene]ethane-1,2-diamine, has been obtained by direct reaction of the Schiff base and the metal salt; the gadolinium(III) homologue has also been prepared and so far characterized only spectroscopically. The crystal structure resembles those reported for hexadentate macrocyclic Schiff bases.

Four new nickel(II) complexes, [Ni2L2(NO2)2]·CH2Cl2·C2H5OH, 2H2O (1), [Ni2L2(DMF)2(m-NO2)]ClO4·DMF (2a), [Ni2L2(DMF)2(m-NO2)]ClO4 (2b) and [Ni3L¢2(m3-NO2)2(CH2Cl2)]n·1.5H2O (3) where HL = 2-[(3-amino-propylimino)-methyl]-phenol, H2L¢ = 2-({3-[(2-hydroxy-benzylidene)-amino]-propylimino}-methyl)-phenol and DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide, have been synthesized starting with the precursor complex [NiL2]·2H2O, nickel(II) perchlorate and sodium nitrite and characterized structurally and magnetically. The structural analyses reveal that in all the complexes, NiII ions possess a distorted octahedral geometry. Complex 1 is a dinuclear di-m2-phenoxo bridged species in which nitrite ion acts as chelating co-ligand. Complexes 2a and 2b also consist of dinuclear entities, but in these two compounds a cis-(m-nitrito-1kO:2kN) bridge is present in addition to the di-m2-phenoxo bridge. The molecular structures of 2a and 2b are equivalent; they differ only in that 2a contains an additional solvated DMF molecule. Complex 3 is formed by ligand rearrangement and is a one-dimensional polymer in which double phenoxo as well as m-nitrito-1kO:2kN bridged trinuclear units are linked through a very rare m3-nitrito-1kO:2kN:3kO¢ bridge. Analysis of variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data indicates that there is a global weak antiferromagnetic interaction between the nickel(II) ions in four complexes, with exchange parameters J of -5.26, -11.45, -10.66 and -5.99 cm-1 for 1, 2a, 2b and 3, respectively

We previously demonstrated that Bis[(2-oxindol-3-ylimino)-2-(2-aminoethyl) pyridine-N, N`] copper(II) [Cu(isaepy)(2)] was an efficient inducer of the apoptotic mitochondrial pathway. Here, we deeply dissect the mechanisms underlying the ability of Cu(isaepy)(2) to cause mitochondriotoxicity. In particular, we demonstrate that Cu(isaepy)(2) increases NADH-dependent oxygen consumption of isolated mitochondria and that this phenomenon is associated with oxy-radical production and insensitive to adenosine diphosphate. These data indicate that Cu(isaepy)(2) behaves as an uncoupler and this property is also confirmed in cell systems. Particularly, SH-SY5Y cells show: (i) an early loss of mitochondrial transmembrane potential; (ii) a decrease in the expression levels of respiratory complex components and (iii) a significant adenosine triphosphate (ATP) decrement. The causative energetic impairment mediated by Cu(isaepy)(2) in apoptosis is confirmed by experiments carried out with rho(0) cells, or by glucose supplementation, where cell death is significantly inhibited. Moreover, gastric and cervix carcinoma AGS and HeLa cells, which rely most of their ATP production on oxidative phosphorylation, show a marked sensitivity toward Cu(isaepy)(2). Adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which is activated by events increasing the adenosine monophosphate: ATP ratio, is deeply involved in the apoptotic process because the overexpression of its dominant/negative form completely abolishes cell death. Upon glucose supplementation, AMPK is not activated, confirming its role as fuel-sensing enzyme that positively responds to Cu(isaepy)(2)-mediated energetic impairment by committing cells to apoptosis. Overall, data obtained indicate that Cu(isaepy)(2) behaves as delocalized lipophilic cation and induces mitochondrial-sited reactive oxygen species production. This event results in mitochondrial dysfunction and ATP decrease, which in turn triggers AMPK-dependent apoptosis.

A novel racemization observed in the Vitamin B6-amino acid Schiff base complexes, aquo (5'-phosphopyridoxylidene-l-tyrosinato) copper(II) and aquo (5'-phosphopyridoxylidene-l-phenylalaninato) copper(II) is described. The racemization taking place in solution under mild acidic conditions (pH 5-6) was confirmed by CD studies and the products were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The structures of both complexes show almost parallel orientation of the aromatic side chain and the pyridoxal II-system. The activation of the αCsingle bondH group due to the intermolecular II- interaction is probably the reason for the unusual racemization observed.

Reactions of N,N′-n-propylene-bis(acetylacetoneimino) metal (II), M[n-P-(AI)2], where M=Ni(II) or Pd(II), with nitrosating reagents have been investigated. Mono- and di-nitrosated complexes were obtained selectively, depending upon the concentration of the nitrosating reagents and the reaction time. In both the cases, the γ-CH group is transformed to an ambidentate isonitroso group (>C=NOH), which coordinates to the metal ion by dislodging the already coordinated carbonyl group. The factors influencing the mode of binding of the isonitroso group have been discussed. The bromination reactions of the mono-nitrosated products of M[n-P-(AI)2] and Pd (II) complexes, Pd [E/i-P-(AI)2], where E/i-P-(AI)2 is a dianion of ethylene/i-propylene-bis (acetylacetoneimine), are also reported. The reaction products have been characterized by elemental analyses, electrical conductivity molecular weight determination, and ir, pmr and electronic spectral data.

The thiocarbohydrazone Schiff-base ligand with a nitrogen and sulphur donor was synthesized through condensation of pyridine-2-carbaldehyde and thiocarbohydrazide. Schiff-base ligands have the ability to conjugate with metal salts. A series of metal complexes with a general formula [MCl(2)(H(2)L)]center dot nH(2)O (M=Ni, Co, Cu and Zn) were synthesized by forming complexes of the N(1),N5-bis[pyridine-2-methylene]thiocarbohydrazone (H2L) Schiff-base ligand. These metal complexes and ligand were characterized by using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy, physicochemical characterization, CHNS and conductivity. The biological activity of the synthesized ligand was investigated by using Escherichia coli DNA as target. The DNA interaction of the synthesized ligand and complexes on E. coli plasmid DNA was investigated in the aqueous medium by UV-Vis spectroscopy and the binding constant (K(b)) was calculated. The DNA binding studies showed that the metal complexes had an improved interaction due to trans-geometrical isomers of the complexes than ligand isomers in cis-positions. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. In the present investigation, a Schiff base N'(1),N'(3)-bis(E)-(5-bromo-2-hydroxyphenyl)methylidene]benzene-1,3-d icarbohydrazide and its metal complexes have been synthesized and characterized. The DNA-binding studies were performed using absorption spectroscopy, emission spectra, viscosity measurements and thermal denatuaration studies. The experimental evidence indicated that, the Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes interact with calf thymus DNA through intercalation with an intrinsic binding constant K-b of 2.6 x 10(4) M-1, 5.7 x 10(4) M-1 and 4.5 x 10(4) M-1, respectively and they exhibited potent photo-damage abilities on pUC19 DNA, through singlet oxygen generation with quantum yields of 0.32, 0.27 and 0.30 respectively. The cytotoxic activity of the complexes resulted that they act as a potent photosensitizers for photochemical reactions. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
