Doppler Broadening Spectroscopy of the large Ge crystal of an HPGe detector was perforrned using positrons from pair production of 6.13 MeV ϒ-rays from the 19F(p,αϒ) 16O reaction. Two HPGe detectors facing opposite sides of the Ge crystal acting as target provided both coincidence and singles spectra. Changes in the shape of the annihilation peak were observed when the high voltage applied to the target detector was switched on or off, amounting to somewhat less than 20% when the areas of equivalent energy intervals in the corresponding normalized spectra are compared.

Cherenkov Imaging counters require large photosensitive areas, capable of single photon detection, operating at stable high gains under radioactive backgrounds while standing high rates, providing a fast response and a good time resolution, and being insensitive to magnetic fields. The development of photon detectors based in Micro Pattern Gaseous detectors (MPGDs), represent a new generation of gaseous photon detectors. In particular, gaseous detectors based on stacked Thick-Gaseous Electron Multipliers (THGEMs), or THGEM based structures, coupled to a CsI photoconverter coating, seem to fulfil the requirements imposed by Cherenkov imaging counters. This work focus on the study of the THGEM-based detectors response as function of its geometrical parameters and applied voltages and electric fields, aiming a future upgrade of the Cherenkov Imaging counter RICH-1 of the COMPASS experiment at CERN SPS. Further studies to decrease the fraction of ions that reach the photocathode (Ion Back Flow – IBF) to minimize the ageing and maximize the photoelectron extraction are performed. Experimental studies are complemented with simulation results, also perfomed in this work.

During a basinal scale study on Palermo Formation (Upper Permian, Parana Basin) high elevated Gamma Ray picks were identified mainly in the lower third of that stratigraphic unit. Those Gamma Ray signatures have been used as good regional stratigraphic markers. From them it was possible one chronostratigraphic analysis of Palermo Formation as pointed out by previous papers (Perinotto). Potassium40 is the responsible for the high Gamma Ray picks in the Palermo Formation. -from English summary

Since discovery, computed tomography is a widely used diagnostic modality. However, this modality imparts relatively high doses to the patients and with fast technological advancement, it is necessary optimize the doses used and ensure the quality of the images through a quality assurance program. This work intended to compare Computed Tomography Dose Index (CTDIW) and effective dose with components of image quality: the Contrast-to-Noise Ratio (CNR) and Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), and a quality factor (Q) deduced by the Rose model for two groups of computed tomography units. The first group was composed by equipments with 10 up to 16 slices and the second one presented 40 up to 320 slices detectors, for the protocols of head and abdomen. It was realized a comparison between different selectable parameters in the protocol of a Philips Brilliance 16, too. The results of the first group to CTDIW, effective dose, SNR and CNR showed variations of 28%, 33%, 37% and 32% respectively for head protocol, and 21%, 27%, 43% and 37% respectively for abdomen protocol. The results of the group 2 to CTDIW, effective dose, SNR and CNR showed variations of 15%, 26%, 36% and 34% respectively for the head protocol, and 8%, 13%, 50% and 60% respectively for abdomen protocol. The comparison between both groups demonstrated similar levels of doses impartation to patients though having so many different configurations, if the uncertainties associated with this measurement were considered. The results of the comparison between different parameters in the Philips Brilliance 16 scanner were in agreement with expected
