The effect of descaling injury on the osmoregulatory ability of hatchery Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts in seawater was investigated. Experimental series were initiated during early, middle, and late periods of the spring smolt migration (April 25, May 11, and May 31, respectively). For each time series, descaled smolts (subjected to descaling on 10% of the body surface area) and control smolts (held out of water for 15 s) were transferred to seawater at 0, 1, 3, or 7 d posttreatment. After fish were held in 35% seawater for 24 h, gill and blood samples were collected and analyzed for Na(+),K(+)-ATPase activity and plasma osmolyte levels. Based on gill Na(+),K(+)-ATPase activity, the three series spanned the period from early smolting (increasing activity) to de-smolting (decreasing activity). In each series, descaled fish transferred to seawater at 0 and 1 d posttreatment had greater plasma osmolality than control fish; descaled fish transferred to seawater at 3 d posttreatment did not differ from controls. The greatest perturbation in osmolality (70 milliosmoles) was observed at the peak of smolting (middle series), whereas lesser increases were seen for early and late-series smolts. The observed osmotic perturbations in descaled fish would probably reduce performance and decrease survival during smolt migration.

Maleic acid (MA) is a common component of descaling products and is widely used in daily life. Accidental ingestion in relevant amounts does not play a major role in human beings; however, it seems to be highly toxic for dogs. It has been commonly used experimentally to induce Fanconi syndrome in dogs or small rodents. Two dogs were presented for acute kidney injury (AKI) after accidental ingestion of a descaling agent containing MA at an estimated amount of 70 mg/kg each. The third dog involved was euthanased by the referring veterinarian, and postmortem pathological analysis revealed severe acute tubular necrosis consistent with toxic nephropathy. The other dogs received symptomatic therapy for AKI including treatment with haemodialysis and showed complete normalisation of serum creatinine at a follow-up after five months. Renal damage can be very severe, but seems to be at least partially reversible and an attempt to treatment is warranted.

Copper is accumulated in recycled steels and is difficult to be removed during steelmaking processes when steel scrap is used as steel sources. Meanwhile, copper characteristic properties are of importance both to human beings and to animals and plants. In this paper, integrated copper coating was observed on the surface of copper-containing steels when the steels were heated at around 1150°C. However, the copper was separately scattered after heating at 1000°C. The forming mechanisms of copper coating will be discussed in detail. By choosing proper descaling reagent, self-generated oxidation-induced copper coating appeared on the steel surface. The method proposed in this work is environmentally friendly for nontoxic chemicals being used. In addition, this provides a new concept for producing protective composite by oxidizing from the substrate directly and there is no binding problem.

Introduction: Currently, there are many questions regarding the cleaning methods seeking greater efficiency and less loss of burs. Aim: the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of cleaning methods on the cutting efficiency and morphological characteristics of stainless steel burs tungsten carbide (carbide). Materials and method: Thirty burs were divided into five groups (n = 5) according with the cleaning method: L1 - steel brush, L2 - nylon brush, L3 - ultrasound + distilled water, L4 - ultrasound + descaling solution and L5 - no cleaning method (control). The burs were used for the cutting of bovine enamel during six periods of 12 minutes each. After each period, the burs were cleaned (except L5 ) following the protocol established for each group. The cutting efficiency was determined by mass loss and morphological characteristics. Result: The average amount of wear after 72 minutes of use were L1 = 0.3558 g; L2 = 0.4275 g; L3 = 0.4652 g; L4 = 0.4396 g e L5 = 0.4854 g; significant differences in the time of use (p < 0.001) and cleaning method (p < 0.001). The L1 group showed the worst performance. Regardless of the experimental group, morphological analysis revealed alterations in the cutting blades soon after the first 12 minutes, being L1 the most affected group. Conclusion: The cleaning with wire brush was the most damaging method to the cutting efficiency and to the morphology of carbide burs.
