We investigate the spectrum of certain integro-differential-delay equations (IDDEs) which arise naturally within spatially distributed, nonlocal, pattern formation problems. Our approach is based on the reformulation of the relevant dispersion relations with the use of the Lambert function. As a particular application of this approach, we consider the case of the Amari delay neural field equation which describes the local activity of a population of neurons taking into consideration the finite propagation speed of the electric signal. We show that if the kernel appearing in this equation is symmetric around some point a= 0 or consists of a sum of such terms, then the relevant dispersion relation yields spectra with an infinite number of branches, as opposed to finite sets of eigenvalues considered in previous works. Also, in earlier works the focus has been on the most rightward part of the spectrum and the possibility of an instability driven pattern formation. Here, we numerically survey the structure of the entire spectra and argue that a detailed knowledge of this structure is important within neurodynamical applications. Indeed, the Amari IDDE acts as a filter with the ability to recognise and respond whenever it is excited in such a way so as to resonate with one of its rightward modes, thereby amplifying such inputs and dampening others. Finally, we discuss how these results can be generalised to the case of systems of IDDEs.

The spectral theory for linear autonomous neutral functional differential equations (FDE) yields explicit formulas for the large time behaviour of solutions. Our results are based on resolvent computations and Dunford calculus, applied to establish explicit formulas for the large time behaviour of solutions of FDE. We investigate in detail a class of two-dimensional systems of FDE. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We present a sufficient condition for a zero of a function that arises typically as the characteristic equation of a linear functional differential equations of neutral type, to be simple and dominant. This knowledge is useful in order to derive the asymptotic behaviour of solutions of such equations. A simple characteristic equation, arisen from the study of delay equations with small delay, is analyzed in greater detail. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In this work, we are interested in the dynamic behavior of a parabolic problem with nonlinear boundary conditions and delay in the boundary. We construct a reaction-diffusion problem with delay in the interior, where the reaction term is concentrated in a neighborhood of the boundary and this neighborhood shrinks to boundary, as a parameter epsilon goes to zero. We analyze the limit of the solutions of this concentrated problem and prove that these solutions converge in certain continuous function spaces to the unique solution of the parabolic problem with delay in the boundary. This convergence result allows us to approximate the solution of equations with delay acting on the boundary by solutions of equations with delay acting in the interior and it may contribute to analyze the dynamic behavior of delay equations when the delay is at the boundary. We are concerned with the Kaldor's trade cycle model under the effect of a delay which represents a gestation lag between a decision of investment and its effect on the capital stock. Taking the adjustment coefficient in the goods market as a bifurcation parameter, we achieve global branches of periodic solutions. In our setting the delay is a constant inherent to the specific economy. Copyright © 2013 Watam Press.

The growth behaviour of the vibrational wear phenomenon known as rail corrugation is investigated analytically and numerically using mathematical models. A simplified feedback model for wear-type rail corrugation that includes a wheel pass time delay is developed with an aim to analytically distil the most critical interaction occurring between the wheel/rail structural dynamics, rolling contact mechanics and rail wear. To this end, a stability analysis on the complete system is performed to determine the growth of wear-type rail corrugations over multiple wheelset passages. This analysis indicates that although the dynamical behaviour of the system is stable for each wheel passage, over multiple wheelset passages, the growth of wear-type corrugations is shown to be the result of instability due to feedback interaction between the three primary components of the model. The corrugations are shown analytically to grow for all realistic railway parameters. From this analysis an analytical expression for the exponential growth rate of corrugations in terms of known parameters is developed. This convenient expression is used to perform a sensitivity analysis to identify critical parameters that most affect corrugation growth. The analytical predictions are shown to compare well with results from a benchmarked time-domain finite element model. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We study small perturbations of three linear Delay Differential Equations (DDEs) close to Hopf bifurcation points. In analytical treatments of such equations, many authors recommend a center manifold reduction as a first step. We demonstrate that the method of multiple scales, on simply discarding the infinitely many exponentially decaying components of the complementary solutions obtained at each stage of the approximation, can bypass the explicit center manifold calculation. Analytical approximations obtained for the DDEs studied closely match numerical solutions.

In the present paper we use a time delay epsilon > 0 for an energy conserving approximation of the nonlinear term of the non-stationary Navier-Stokes equations. We prove that the corresponding initial value problem (N_epsilon)in smoothly bounded domains G \subseteq R^3 is well-posed. Passing to the limit epsilon \rightarrow 0 we show that the sequence of stabilized solutions has an accumulation point such that it solves the Navier-Stokes problem (N_0) in a weak sense (Hopf).
