Ultrasonic absorption coefficients were measured for butylamine in heavy water (D2O) in the frequency range from 0.8 to 220 MHz and at concentrations from 0.0278 to 2.5170 mol dm(-3) at 25 degrees C; two kinds of relaxation processes were observed. One was found in relatively dilute solutions (up to 0.5 mol dm(-3)), which was attributed to the hydrolysis of butylamine. In order to compare the results, absorption measurements were also carried out in light water (H2O). The rate and thermodynamic parameters were determined from the concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency and the maximum absorption per wavelength. The isotope effects on the diffusion-controlled reaction were estimated and the stability of the intermediate of the hydrolysis was considered while comparing it with the results for propylamine in H2O and D2O. Another relaxation process was observed at concentrations greater than 1 mol dm(-3) in D2O. In order to examine the solution characteristics, proton NMR measurements for butylamine were also carried out in D2O. The chemical shifts for the gamma- and delta-proton in butylamine molecule indicate the existence of an aggregate. From profiles of the concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency and the maximum absorption per wavelength of sound absorption, the source of the relaxation was attributed to an association-dissociation reaction, perhaps, associated with a hydrophobic interaction. The aggregation number, the forward and reverse rate constants and the standard volume change of the reaction were determined. It was concluded from a comparison with the results in H2O that the hydrophobic interaction of butylamine in D2O is stronger than that in H2O. Also, the isotope effect on this reaction was interpreted in terms of the solvent structure.

The unimolecular dissociation reactions of doubly charged ions were reported, which resulted from a tandem mass spectrometer and a reversed geometry double focusing mass spectrometer by electron impact, Mass analyzed ion kinetic energy spectrometry (MIKES) was used to obtain the kinetic energy releases in charge separation reactions of doubly charged ions, The intercharge distances between the two charges at transition states can be calculated from the kinetic energy releases, Transition structures of unimolecular dissociation reactions were infered from MIKES and MS/MS.

The dissociative adsorption of N-2 has been studied at both monatomic steps and flat regions on the surfaces of the 4d transition metals from Zr to Pd. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we have determined and analyzed the trends in both straight reactivity and structure sensitivity across the periodic table. With regards to reactivity, we find that the trend in activation energy (Ea) is determined mainly by a charge transfer from the surface metal atoms to the N atoms during transition state formation, namely, the degree of ionicity of the N-surface bond at the transition state. Indeed, we find that the strength of the metal-N bond at the transition state (and therefore the trend in Ea) can be predicted by the difference in Mulliken electronegativity between the metal and N. Structure sensitivity is analyzed in terms of geometric and electronic effects. We find that the lowering of Ea due to steps is more pronounced on the right-hand side of the periodic table. It is found that for the early transition metals the geometric and electronic effects work in opposition when going from terrace to step active site. In the case of the late 4d metals, however, these effects work in combination, producing a more marked reduction in Ea.

Ammonia synthesis on three metal surfaces (Zr, Ru, and Pd) is investigated using density functional theory calculations. In addition to N-2 dissociation, all the transition states of the hydrogenation reactions from N to NH3 are located and the reaction energy profiles at both low and high surface coverages are compared and analyzed. The following are found: (i) Surface coverage effect on dissociation reactions is more significant than that on association reactions. (ii) The difference between N and H chemisorption energies, the so-called chemisorption energy gap which is a measure of adsorption competition, is vital to the reactivity of the catalysts. (iii) The hydrogenation barriers can considerably affect the overall rate of ammonia synthesis. A simple model to describe the relationship between dissociation and association reactions is proposed. The important role of alkali additives in heterogeneous catalysis is, to a large extent, related to the high promotion effect they have on many fundamental reactions. The wide application of alkali additives in industry does not, however, reflect a thorough understanding of the mechanism of their promotional abilities. To investigate the physical origin of the alkali promotion effect, we have studied CO dissociation on clean Rh(111) and K-covered Rh(111) surfaces using density functional theory. By varying the position of potassium atoms relative to a dissociating CO, we have mapped out the importance of different K effects on the CO dissociation reactions. The K-induced changes in the reaction pathways and reaction barriers have been determined; in particular, a large reduction of the CO dissociation barrier has been identified. A thorough analysis of this promotion effect allows us to rationalize both the electronic and the geometrical factors that govern alkali promotion effect: (i) The extent of barrier reductions depends strongly on how close K is to the dissociating CO. (ii) Direct K-O bonding that is in a very short range plays a crucial role in reducing the barrier. (iii) K can have a rather long-range effect on the TS structure, which could reduce slightly the barriers.

Dissociative adsorption is one of the most important reactions in catalysis. In this communication we propose a model aiming to generalize the important factors that affect dissociation reactions. Specifically, for a dissociation reaction, say AB -->A + B, the model connects the dissociation barrier with the association barrier, the chemisorption energies of A and B at the final state and the bonding energy of AB in the gas phase. To apply this model, we have calculated CO dissociation on Ru(0001), Rh(111), Pd(111) (4d transition metals), Os(0001), Ir(111), and Pt(111) (5d transition metals) using density function theory (DFT). All the barriers are determined. We find that the DFT results can be rationalized within the model. The model can also be used to explain many experimental observations. Structure, energetics and reactions of ions in the gas phase can be revealed by mass spectrometry techniques coupled to ions activation methods. Ions can gain enough energy for dissociation by absorbing IR light photons introduced by an IR laser to the mass spectrometer. Also collisions with a neutral molecule can increase the internal energy of ions and provide the dissociation threshold energy. Infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) or sustained off-resonance irradiation collision-induced dissociation (SORI-CID) methods are combined with Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometers where ions can be held at low pressures for a long time. The outcome of ion activation techniques especially when it is compared to the computational methods results is of great importance since it provides useful information about the structure, thermochemistry and reactivity of ions of interest. In this work structure, energetics and reactivity of metal cation complexes with dipeptides are investigated. Effect of metal cation size and charge as well as microsolvation on the structure of these complexes has been studied. Structures of bare and hydrated Na and Ca complexes with isomeric dipeptides AlaGly and GlyAla are characterized by means of IRMPD spectroscopy and computational methods. At the second step unimolecular dissociation reactions of singly charged and doubly charged multimetallic complexes of alkaline earth metal cations with GlyGly are examined by CID method. Also structural features of these complexes are revealed by comparing their IRMPD spectra with calculated IR spectra of possible structures. At last the unimolecular dissociation reactions of Mn complexes are studied. IRMPD spectroscopy along with computational methods is also employed for structural elucidation of Mn complexes. In addition the ion-molecule reactions of Mn complexes with CO and water are explored in the low pressures obtained in the ICR cell.

Binding of 13C-labeled N-acetylgalactosamine (13C-GalNAc) and N-trifluoroacetylgalactosamine (19F-GalNAc) to Artocarpus integrifolia agglutinin has been studied using 13C and 19F nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, respectively. Binding of these saccharides resulted in broadening of the resonances, and no change in chemical shift was observed, suggesting that the alpha- and beta-anomers of 13C-GalNAc and 19F-GalNAc experience a magnetically equivalent environment in the lectin combining site. The alpha- and beta-anomers of 13C-GalNAc and 19F-GalNAc were found to be in slow exchange between free and protein bound states. Binding of 13C-GalNAc was studied as a function of temperature. From the temperature dependence of the line broadening, the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters were evaluated. The association rate constants obtained for the alpha-anomers of 13C-GalNAc and 19F-GalNAc (k+1 = 1.01 x 10(5) M-1.s-1 and 0.698 x 10(5) M-1.s-1, respectively) are in close agreement with those obtained for the corresponding beta-anomers (k+1 = 0.95 x 10(5) M-1.s-1 and 0.65 x 10(5) M-1.s-1, respectively), suggesting that the two anomers bind to the lectin by a similar mechanism. In addition these values are several orders of magnitude slower than those obtained for diffusion controlled processes. The dissociation rate constants obtained are 49.9, 56.9, 42, and 43 s-1, respectively, for the alpha- and beta-anomers of 13C-GalNAc and 19F-GalNAc. A two-step mechanism has been proposed for the interaction of 13C-GalNAc and 19F-GalNAc with A. integrifolia lectin in view of the slow association rates and high activation entropies. The thermodynamic parameters obtained for the association and dissociation reactions suggest that the binding process is entropically favored and that there is a small enthalpic contribution.

Analysis of precipitation reactions is extremely important in the technology of production of fine particles from the liquid phase. The control of composition and particle size in precipitation processes requires careful analysis of the several reactions that comprise the precipitation system. Since precipitation systems involve several, rapid ionic dissociation reactions among other slower ones, the faster reactions may be assumed to be nearly at equilibrium. However, the elimination of species, and the consequent reduction of the system of equations, is an aspect of analysis fraught with the possibility of subtle errors related to the violation of conservation principles. This paper shows how such errors may be avoided systematically by relying on the methods of linear algebra. Applications are demonstrated by analyzing the reactions leading to the precipitation of calcium carbonate in a stirred tank reactor as well as in a single emulsion drop. Sample calculations show that supersaturation dynamics can assume forms that can lead to subsequent dissolution of particles that have once been precipitated.

The standard Gibbs' free energies of formation of compounds of type Cu2L%05 (Ln = Tb,Dy,Er,Yb) were measured using the solid state cell in the temperature range of 970 to 1323 K For formation of Cu2L?O5 compounds from their binary component oxides according to the reaction 2 CUO (s) + L%03 (s) -, Cu,,L%05 (s),the Gibbs' free energy changes can be represented by the following equations:AGO = 13 080 - 13.70 'I" (+80) J mol-' (Ln = Tb)AGq = 11 480 - 13.51 T (260) J mol-I (Ln = Dy)AGO = 10 750 - 13.99 T (260) J mol-I (Ln = Er)AGO = 9 920 - 13.90 T (260) J mol-' (Ln = Yb) Since formation of the compounds is endothermic, the compounds become thermodynamically unstable with respect to their component oxides below 955 K for Cu2Tb205, 850 K for Cu2Dy205, 768 K for Cu2Er205 and 714 K for Cu2Yb2OS When the oxygen partial pressure over Cu2L%05 is lowered, they decompose according to the scheme, 2 CU,L%O, (s) -r 2 L%03 (s) +2 cu20 (s) + 02(g)The equilibrium chemical potentials of oxygen corresponding to the dissociation reactions are computed from the emf data and auxiliary information on Cu20 and CuO. The computed decomposition temperatures at an oxygen partial pressure of 5.0 x ld Pa are compared with those obtained directly from combined thermogravimetric (TGA) and differential thermal analyses (DTA).The free energy, enthalpy and entropy of formation of Cu2Ln205 compounds show systematic variation with the ionic radius of the trivalent lanthanide ion. The trends obtained in this study are compared with information available in the literature. The staZbility of Cu2Ln205 compounds increases with the decrease in ionic radii of the ~ n ion~. +

To predict where a catalytic reaction should occur is a fundamental issue scientifically. Technologically, it is also important because it can facilitate the catalyst's design. However, to date, the understanding of this issue is rather limited. In this work, two types of reactions, CH4 CH3 + H and CO C + 0 on two transition metal surfaces, were chosen as model systems aiming to address in general where a catalytic reaction should occur. The dissociations of CH4 - CH3 + H and CO --> C + O and their reverse reactions on flat, stepped, and kinked Rh and Pd surfaces were studied in detail. We find the following: First, for the CH4 Ch(3) + H reaction, the dissociation barrier is reduced by similar to0.3 eV on steps and kinks as compared to that on flat surfaces. On the other hand, there is essentially no difference in barrier for the association reaction of CH3 + H on the flat surfaces and the defects. Second, for the CO C + 0 reaction, the dissociation barrier decreases dramatically (more than 0.8 eV on Rh and Pd) on steps and kinks as compared to that on flat surfaces. In contrast to the CH3 + H reaction, the C + 0 association reaction also preferentially occurs on steps and kinks. We also present a detailed analysis of the reaction barriers in which each barrier is decomposed quantitatively into a local electronic effect and a geometrical effect. Our DFT calculations show that surface defects such as steps and kinks can largely facilitate bond breaking, while whether the surface defects could promote bond formation depends on the individual reaction as well as the particular metal. The physical origin of these trends is identified and discussed. On the basis of our results, we arrive at some simple rules with respect to where a reaction should occur: (i) defects such as steps are always favored for dissociation reactions as compared to flat surfaces; and (ii) the reaction site of the association reactions is largely related to the magnitude of the bonding competition effect, which is determined by the reactant and metal valency. Reactions with high valency reactants are more likely to occur on defects (more structure-sensitive), as compared to reactions with low valency reactants. Moreover, the reactions on late transition metals are more likely to proceed on defects than those on the early transition metals.

We present a quantitative experimental demonstration of solvent-mediated communication between noncontacting biopolymers. We show that changes in the activity of a solvent component brought about by a conformational change in one biopolymer can result in changes in the physical properties of a second noncontacting biopolymer present in solution. Specifically, we show that the release of protons on denaturation of a donor polymer (in this case, a four-stranded DNA tetraplex, iDNA) modulates the melting temperature of a noncontacting, acceptor polymer [in this case poly(A)]. In addition to such proton-mediated cross talk, we also demonstrate counterion-mediated cross talk between noncontacting biopolymers. Specifically, we show that counterion association/release on denaturation of native salmon sperm DNA (the donor polymer) can modulate the melting temperature of poly(dA)⋅poly(dT) (the acceptor polymer). Taken together, these two examples demonstrate how poly(A) and poly(dA)⋅poly(dT) can serve as molecular probes that report the pH and free salt concentrations in solution, respectively. Further, we demonstrate how such through-solvent dialogue between biopolymers that do not directly interact can be used to evaluate (in a model-free manner) association/dissociation reactions of solvent components (e.g., protons, sodium cations) with one of the two biopolymers. We propose that such through-solution dialogue is a general property of all biopolymers. As a result, such solvent-mediated cross talk should be considered when assessing reactions of multicomponent systems such as those that exist in essentially all biological processes.
