The compound [PbPh2(NO3)(2)(H2O)(2)] was synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic methods (IR; H-1, C-13 and Pb-207 NMR) and mass spectrometry. An X-ray diffraction study showed that the crystal is a supramolecular tridimensional network of hydrogen-bonded PbPh2(NO3)(2)(H2O)(2) units in which the Pb atom is octacoordinated and adopts a distorted hexagonal bipyramidal geometry, with four O (bidentate nitrate) and two O (water) atoms in equatorial positions and two C-phenyl atoms in axial positions. The crystal of [PbMe3(NO3)(H2O)], obtained as a byproduct in the synthesis of PbMe2(NO3)(2), contains chains of hydrogen-bonded PbMe3(NO3)(H2O) units in which the Pb atom is pentacoordinated with a slightly distorted trigonal bipyramidal environment. In this arrangement the three C-methyl atoms are equatorial and the O atoms from the monodentate nitrate and the water molecule are axial. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Using both human and murine cell lines, we show that malignant cells are able to invade through basement membrane and also secrete elevated amounts of collagenase IV, an enzyme implicated in the degradation of basement membranes. Using serine proteinase inhibitors and antibodies to plasminogen activators as well as a newly described collagenase inhibitor we demonstrate that a protease cascade leads to the activation of an enzyme(s) that cleaves collagen IV. Inhibition at each step reduces the invasion of the tumor cells through reconstituted basement membrane in vitro. Treatment with a collagenase inhibitor reduced the incidence of lung lesions in mice given i.v. injections of malignant melanoma cells.

Solvent extraction of Ce(IV), Th(IV) with Cyanex 923 in n-hexane from sulphuric acid medium was studied with the dependence of the extraction on acidity and temperature being investigated. The Ce(IV) and Th(IV) extraction mechanism was proposed by slope analysis and the IR spectra of purified Cyanex 923 saturated with Ce(IV) were employed to determine the composition of the Ce(IV) complex. The equilibrium constant and thermodynamic functions of Th(IV) extraction were calculated and the characteristics of the stripping of Ce(IV), Th(IV) from the loaded organic phase were studied. This thesis focuses on the synthesis and analysis of novel chloride based platinum complexes derived from iminophosphine and phosphinoamide ligands, along with studies on their reactivity towards substitution and oxidation reactions. Also explored here are the potential applications of these complexes for biological and luminescent purposes. Chapter one provides an extensive overview of platinum coordination chemistry with examples of various mixed donor ligands along with the history of platinum anticancer therapy. It also looks at metals in medicine, both for biological functions as well as for therapeutic purposes and gives a background to some other applications for platinum complexes. Chapter two outlines the design and synthetic strategies employed for the development of novel platinum (II) chloride complexes from iminophosphine and phosphinoamide ligands. Also reported is the cyclometallation of these complexes to form stable tridentate mixed donor platinum (II) compounds. In Chapter three the development of a direct method for displacing a chloride from a platinum metal centre with a desired phosphine is reported. Numerous methods for successful oxidation of the platinum (II) complexes will also be explored, leading to novel platinum (IV) complexes being reported here also. The importance of stabilisation of the displaced anion, chloride, by the solvent system will also be discussed in this chapter. Chapter four investigates the reactivity of the platinum (II) complexes towards two different biomolecules to form novel platinum bio-adducts. The potential application of the platinum (II) cyclometallates as chemotherapeutics will also be explored here using in-vitro cancer cell testing. Finally, luminescence studies are also reported here for the ligands and platinum complexes reported in chapter two and three to investigate potential applications in this field also. Chapter five provides a final conclusion and an overall summary of the entire project as well as identifying key areas for future work.

We study the influence of non-ideal boundary and initial conditions (BIC) of a temporal analysis of products (TAP) reactor model on the data (observed exit flux) analysis. The general theory of multi-response state-defining experiments for a multi-zone TAP reactor is extended and applied to model several alternative boundary and initial conditions proposed in the literature. The method used is based on the Laplace transform and the transfer matrix formalism for multi-response experiments. Two non-idealities are studied: (1) the inlet pulse not being narrow enough (gas pulse not entering the reactor in Dirac delta function shape) and (2) the outlet non-ideality due to imperfect vacuum. The effect of these non-idealities is analyzed to the first and second order of approximation. The corresponding corrections were obtained and discussed in detail. It was found that they are negligible. Therefore, the model with ideal boundary conditions is proven to be completely adequate to the description and interpretation of transport-reaction data obtained with TAP-2 reactors.

A UVB specific dosimeter is described comprising: a redox dye (2,6-dichloroindophenol, DCIP), a semiconductor ( tin(IV) oxide, SnO2) and a sacrificial electron donor ( glycerol) dispersed in a polymer ( hydroxy ethyl cellulose, HEC) film. The dosimeter is blue in the absence of UVB light but rapidly loses colour on exposure to UVB light. The spectral characteristics of a typical UVB dosimeter film and the mechanism by which the colour change occurs are detailed. DCIP UVB dosimeter films exhibit a response that is related to the irradiance level and duration of UVB exposure, the level of SnO2 present and to a lesser extent the level of glycerol present. The response of the dosimeter appears to be independent of dye concentration and film thickness. Furthermore, DCIP UVB dosimeter films respond to solar simulated light, exhibiting a colour loss that can be simply related to the Minimal Erythemal Dose (MED) exposure for skin type II. As a consequence, such indicators have potential for measuring solar radiation exposure and providing an early warning of erythema for most Caucasian skin (i.e. skin type II).

Accurate determination of electron excitation rates for the Fe-peak elements is complicated by the presence of an open 3d-shell in the description of the target ion, which can lead to hundreds of target state energy levels. Furthermore, the low energy scattering region is dominated by series of Rydberg resonances, which require a very fine energy mesh for their delineation. These problems have prompted the development of a suite of parallel R-matrix codes. In this work we report recent applications of these codes to the study of electron impact excitation of Ni III and Ni IV.
