This work studied the electrochemical behavior of a solution treated or 550 degrees C aged Cu10Ni-3Al-1.3Fe alloy, in 0.01 M NaCl aqueous solution, through potentiodynamic polarization in both stagnant condition or under erosion process. Results showed the occurrence of a passivity break potential (E(pb)), related to the beginning of the denickelification process, which occurred as a localized attack under stagnant electrolyte. Under erosion conditions localized denickelification was not observed, despite of the presence of E(pb). This could indicate that selective corrosion of Ni, which caused the observed E(pb), occurred as a dissolution-redeposition process, with removal of the Cu deposits during erosion process. This work aims to characterize corrosion products formed on copper samples exposed to synthetic rainwater of Rio Janeiro and Sao Paulo. XRD and XPS were employed to determine their composition, while electrochemical techniques were used to evaluate their protective properties. XRD and XPS indicated the thickening of the corrosion layer with time. Electrochemical results showed that the protectiveness of the corrosion layer depends on the solution composition. Based on our findings a corrosion mechanism for copper in simulated rainwater is proposed where the role of NH(4)(+) ions in the cuprite layer partial regeneration is taken into account. Aluminium alloy (AA) 2024-T3 is an important engineering material due to its widespread use in the aerospace industry. However, it is very prone to localized corrosion attack in chloride containing media, which has been mainly associated to the presence of coarse intermetallics (IMs) in its microstructure. In this work the corrosion behaviour of AA 2024-T3 in low concentrated chloride media was investigated using microscopy and electrochemical methods. TEM/EDS observations on non-corroded samples evidenced the heterogeneous composition within the IMs. In addition, SEM observations showed that intermetallics with the same nominal composition present different reactivity, and that both types of coarse IMs normally found in the alloy microstructure are prone to corrosion. Moreover, EDS analyses showed important compositional changes in corroded IMs, evidencing a selective dissolution of their more active constituents, and the onset of an intense oxygen peak, irrespective to the IM nature, indicating the formation of corrosion products. On the other hand, the results of the electrochemical investigations, in accordance with the SEM/EDS observations, evidenced that IMs corrosion dominates the electrochemical response of the alloy during the first hours of immersion in the test electrolyte. The corrosion resistance of Ti and Ti-6Al-4V was investigated through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, EIS, potentiodynamic polarisation curves and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The tests were done in Hank solution at 25 degrees C and 37 degrees C. The EIS measurements were done at the open circuit potential at specific immersion times. An increase of the resistance as a function of the immersion time was observed, for Ti (at 25 degrees C and 37 degrees C), and for Ti-6Al-4V (at 25 degrees C), which was interpreted as the formation and growth of a passive film on the metallic surfaces. This paper presents a study of AISI 1040 steel corrosion in aqueous electrolyte of acetic acid buffer containing 3.1 and 31 x 10(-3) mol dm(-3) of Na(2)S in both the presence and absence of 3.5 wt.% NaCl. This investigation of steel corrosion was carried out using potential polarization, and open-circuit and in situ optical microscopy. The morphological analysis and classification of types of surface corrosion damage by digital image processing reveals grain boundary corrosion and shows a non-uniform sulfide film growth, which occurs preferentially over pearlitic grains through successive formation and dissolution of the film. The corrosion resistance of three of the constituent phases in high copper dental amalgams has been investigated by electrochemical methods in 0.9% NaCl solution. Polarization curves show corrosion potentials most positive for gamma(1)-Ag2Hg3, followed by Ag-Cu, and gamma-Ag3Sn in agreement with the order of corrosion resistance deduced from the corrosion currents. Complex plane impedance plots at the open circuit potential showed distorted semicircles with diffusional components at low frequency for Ag-Hg and Ag-Cu, while for gamma-Ag3Sn a layer of corrosion products is formed, partially or completely covering the surface of the electrode. Impedance and noise spectra have been compared in the frequency domain, and show good agreement. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The corrosion protection of AA6063 aluminium alloy by cerium conversion, polyaniline conducting polymer and by duplex coatings has been investigated. The electrochemical behaviour was evaluated in aerated 3.5 wt.% NaCl. All coatings tested shifted the corrosion and pitting potentials to more positive values, indicating protection against corrosion. The duplex coatings are significantly more effective than each coating alone: corrosion and pitting potentials were shifted by +183 and +417 mV(SCE), respectively, by duplex coatings in relation to the untreated aluminium alloy. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy are in agreement with the electrochemical results, reinforcing the superior performance of duplex coatings. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. This article describes the research carried out regarding the application of cathodic protection (CP) and cathodic prevention (CPrev), in some cases with a pre-treatment of electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE), on representative specimens of reinforced concrete structures, using an anodic system consisting of a graphite-cement paste applied as a coating on the surface. The aim of this research is to find out the competence of this anode for the aforementioned electrochemical treatments. The efficiency of this anode has been clearly demonstrated, as well as its capability to apply a combined process of ECE and after CP.

Potentiostatically induced current transients obtained on a range of reinforced concrete specimens were analysed to give estimates of the polarisation resistance and interfacial capacitance. The polarisation resistance was compared with the values obtained using more conventional DC methods of analysis and, while it was consistently lower, it was within the error normally attributed to the polarisation resistance method of corrosion rate determination. The interfacial capacitance values determined increased from 0.44 F m -2 for passive steel (polarisation resistance of 132 Ω m 2) to 26.5 F m -2 for active steel (polarisation resistance of 0.34 Ω m 2). This has a dominant effect on the time required for potentiostatically induced current transients to reach a steady state with a longer time being required by actively corroding steel. By contrast the potential decay time constants describing galvanostatically or coulostatically induced potential transients decrease with an increase in corrosion rate and values less than 25 s for active specimens and greater than 40 s for passive specimens were determined in this work. © 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

In this paper, the performance of bis-1, 2-(triethoxysilyl) ethane (BTSE) as a pre-treatment to protect the AA 2024-T3 against corrosion has been investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization curves, and the scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET). The microstructural and morphological characterizations were carried out via scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy and the chemical composition evaluated using contact angle measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical results showed that the additives improved the anticorrosion properties of the coating. The chemical characterization indicated that additives contribute to an increased degree of surface coverage, as well as to a more complete reticulation. The SVET results evidenced the self-healing abilities of Ce ions. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In the last few years great efforts have been made in order to find and to develop environmentally friendly substitutes for Cr6+ pre-treatments applied on aluminium alloys used in the aircraft industry. Among the potential substitutes, silane layers have attracted considerable interest from researchers and from the industry. The present work investigates the anti-corrosion behaviour of (bis-1, 2-(triethoxysilyl) ethane (BTSE)) silane layers modified with Ce ions and/or silica nanoparticles applied on Al alloy 2024-T3 substrates. The corrosion behaviour was investigated in 0.1 M NaCl solution via d.c. polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Contact angle measurements and XPS were used to assess information on the chemistry of the silane pre-treated surfaces. The results have shown that the introduction of additives improves the corrosion protection properties of the silane layer. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
