The problem of separating the copper sulfide minerals from sphalerite, in copper - zinc ores, has been a difficult one. This is largely due to the lack of adequate research and the small amount of data obtainable on the behavior of copper and zinc sulfide minerals in flotation circuits.

Alteration in a submarine remnant volcanic arc should leave an important record of (1) the mineralogy of sea water-volcanic arc rock interaction; (2) the chemistry of solid reaction products; (3) the isotopic characteristics of such reactions (Muehlenbachs and Clayton, 1972; Spooner, Beckinsale, et al , 1977; Spooner, Chapman, et al., 1977); (4) the metallogenesis within such a sequence (Mitchell and Bell, 1973); and (5) the geothermal gradient during the alteration. The volcaniclastic breccias, tuffs, and igneous units of Sites 448 (993 m) and 451 (930.5 m) on the Palau-Kyushu and West Mariana ridges, respectively, are particularly suited for such studies because the thick sequences have remained submarine throughout their history, seemingly unaffected by magmatic or hydrothermal events after cessation of volcanic activity. Also, shipboard observations indicated a change in alteration products with depth. At both sites the igneous units and volcaniclastic rocks were altered to brownish clays and zeolites near the top of the volcanic sequence; to bright blue green clays and zeolites at moderate depths; and to very dark, nearly opaque, forest green clays and zeolites at still greater depths. Native copper occurs both as disseminated pockets in the volcaniclastic breccias and vesicular basalts and as veins in the breccias; native copper is restricted to stratigraphic levels characterized by the absence of sulfides or oxides of copper and iron. Although some native copper is found in vesicles of basalts and may be orthomagmatic, most of it is clearly secondary. Near dikes and sills, higher sulfur fugacity conditions caused the precipitation of iron and copper sulfides with an absence of native copper (Garrels and Christ, 1965). The occurrence of native copper may be an initial stage of Cu metallogenesis that forms porphyry coppers in island arcs (Mitchell and Bell, 1973). This study will address primarily the possibility that hydrothermal sea water interaction with volcanic arc rocks has created the mineralogical and isotopic zonation in Leg 59 cores. Hydrothermal activity can be expected in a rapidly growing island arc and is probably the result of a high geothermal gradient prevalent during arc magmatic activity. The chemical character of the alteration is further discussed by Hajash (1981).

Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is used in bioleaching industrial operations to recover metal ions from mineral sulfides. Chalcopyrite and bornite are copper sulfides that have the same elemental composition, but differ in their susceptibility to the bioleaching process. Our objective was to identify differentially expressed proteins in A. ferrooxidans LR cells exposed to chalcopyrite or bornite, as a sole energy source, for 24 hours. Compared to the control (without minerals), proteins were induced or repressed in planktonic cells after contact with chalcopyrite or bornite by 24 hours. These results demonstrated that the time of exposure to the copper minerals was enough to trigger distinct responses in the A. ferrooxidans metabolism. © 2007 Trans Tech Publications.

Mineral research works are fundamentals for recognition and incorporation of new reserves. This paper present an integrated analysis of geologic and metallogenetics data, with results gotten from the application of the Induced Polarization geophysical method, in an copper ore occurrence, inserted in Camaquã sedimentary basin, situated in northeast of Caçapava do Sul city (RS). In area ocurr arkosean arenites average coarse, the intensely silicified and recrystallized, pertaining to Passo da Promessa Formation. The presence of azurita and malachite in breakings and high porosity zones of the host rock characterizes the mineral occurrence in surface, located in the crossing two fault families. The inversion models indicate the predominance of high chargeability in vulcanics tuff, rock of high porosity in relation to the andesites and metaconglomerates gifts in the area. The strong structural control of the mineral occurrence associated the high chargeability in volcanic tuff is indications of the hydrothermal fluid access by means of faults, until rocks with great porosity, where it occurred disseminations of copper sulfides in depth and carbonates in surface.

The mineral exploration is a complex activity that should involve a combination of direct and indirect techniques of geological investigation. The growing demand for base metals in the national and international market provides the revaluation of mineral occurrences that can become deposits and mines. This paper presents the results of the electrical resistivity and induced polarization geophysical methods in azimuthal arrangement, applied in a mineral occurrence of disseminated copper sulfides, previously studied through trenches and core drilling, located in the Camaquã Sedimentary Basin, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The inversion models indicate the coincidence of high chargeability and low resistivity values. The integration of geophysical data permitted the elaboration of 3D attributes visualization models for the mineralization enclosed in volcanic tuffs. The integrated geophysical and geological analysis indicates the potential of a new mineralized area. © 2012 Sociedade Brasileira de Geofísica.

The Mangabal Sul and Mangabal Norte mafic-ultramafic complexes are interpreted as intrusive stratiform bodies in the Goiás Magmatic Arc during the Brazilian cycle, being economically important for harboring significant amounts of nickel and copper sulfides. The main lithotypes of the complexes are gabbronorites, olivine gabbronorites, pyroxenites and peridotites, with variated degrees of deformation, recrystallization and metamorphism superimposed, with metamorphic peak of amphibolite to granulite facies evidenced mainly by the occurrence of coronitic olivine in metamafic rocks and the occurrence of syn-kinematic retrometamorphism associated with the development of the main foliation Sn. The Sn foliation planes show NE-SW preferential direction, consistent with the foliation direction of VIII the enclosing gneisses and schists, also concordant with the general elongation of mafic and ultramafic bodies displayed on map. The sulfide phase presents textures that indicate remobilization, associated with the occurrence of significant amounts of rutile within the ore which reinforces this idea. Along with the sulfides, the occurrence of expressive quantities of titanium oxides such as ilmenite and rutile, make the area more economically attractive. It can be suggested that the Mangabal Norte and Mangabal Sul complexes are contemporary, have the same genetic affinity and suffered the same deformational and metamorphic processes, evidenced by their structural and petrological similarities

The equilibrium relations of many of the metallic sulfides have long been a source of scientific and commer­cial interest, of particular interest, are the sulfides of nickel and copper, since the economic recovery of both of these useful metals, from their ores, involves the formation of a sulfide at some stage of the operations.
