Smart structures and systems have the main purpose to mimic living organisms, which are essentially characterized by an autoregulatory behavior. Therefore, this kind of structure has adaptive characteristics with stimulus-response mechanisms. The term adaptive structure has been used to identify structural systems that are capable of changing their geometry or physical properties with the purpose of performing a specific task. In this work, a sliding mode controller with fuzzy inference is applied for active vibration control in an SMA two-bar truss. In order to obtain a simpler controller, a polynomial model is used in the control law, while a more sophisticated version, which presents close agreement with experimental data, is applied to describe the SMA behavior of the structural elements. This system has a rich dynamic response and can easily reach a chaotic behavior even at moderate loads and frequencies. Therefore, this approach has the advantage of not only obtaining a simpler control law, but also allows its robustness be evidenced. Numerical simulations are carried out in order to demonstrate the control system performance.

Academic feedback is taken here as the reporting to student writers of the strengths and weaknesses of their submitted draft work, while academic feedforward refers to constructive advice regarding possible strengthening of students’ next work. Both originate from a tutor’s initial judgement of a student’s work. Feedback and feedforward on work showing need for improvement are problematic in a Confucian Heritage Culture. Even gently constructive advice within a programme seeking evidence for assessment of critical thinking may lead to perception of hurtful criticism by Taiwanese students. Some could withdraw from class activity accordingly. So the writers adjusted their response style. They now choose between different approaches featuring tutorial feedback or feedforward, depending on the standard of work being judged. When individual postings feature poor critical thinking, the writers opt for private messages concentrating on constructive feedforward. For better postings, they provide positive feedback with reasons for their judgements, and summarise to the class these exemplars of generic strengths in critical thinking. They also offer private prompting when they see scope for further enrichment of an able student’s critical thinking. This might also be a useful practice when tutoring solely in the West. Neste trabalho, é estudado o controle da transmissão do som numa placa retangular e fina. Para tanto, é encontrada a resposta dinâmica da placa, excitada por forças harmônicas pontuais e piezomomentos, obtida usando uma base não-clássica e uma análise modal. A radiação sonora emitida pela vibração da placa é encontrada. A potência sonora radiada pode ser calculada aplicando controle ativo diretamente na estrutura, na forma de uma entrada vibratória, uma vez conhecida a resposta na superfície da placa, obtendo-se uma signicativa redução analitica. Os piezocerâmicos, modelados como quatro momentos pontuais, são unidos a superfície da placa como atuadores. A potência sonora transmitida antes e depois do controle é comparada, usando diferentes número de atuadores. Uma estratégia clássica de controle linear quadrático (LQR) e empregada no contexto de um procedimento de otimização da posição dos atuadores do sistema.
