Solder constitutive models are important as they are widely used in FEA simulations to predict the lifetime of soldered assemblies. This paper briefly reviews some common constitutive laws to capture creep in solder and presents work on laws capturing both kinematic hardening and damage. Inverse analysis is used to determine constants for the kinematic hardening law which match experimental creep curves. The mesh dependence of the damage law is overcome by using volume averaging and is applied to predict the crack path in a thermal cycled resistor component

In this article we study the azimuthal shear deformations in a compressible Isotropic elastic material. This class of deformations involves an azimuthal displacement as a function of the radial and axial coordinates. The equilibrium equations are formulated in terms of the Cauchy-Green strain tensors, which form an overdetermined system of partial differential equations for which solutions do not exist in general. By means of a Legendre transformation, necessary and sufficient conditions for the material to support this deformation are obtained explicitly, in the sense that every solution to the azimuthal equilibrium equation will satisfy the remaining two equations. Additionally, we show how these conditions are sufficient to support all currently known deformations that locally reduce to simple shear. These conditions are then expressed both in terms of the invariants of the Cauchy-Green strain and stretch tensors. Several classes of strain energy functions for which this deformation can be supported are studied. For certain boundary conditions, exact solutions to the equilibrium equations are obtained. © 2005 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

The constitutive model for a magnetostrictive material and its effect on the structural response is presented in this article. The example of magnetostrictive material considered is the TERFENOL-D. As like the piezoelectric material, this material has two constitutive laws, one of which is the sensing law and the other is the actuation law, both of which are highly coupled and non-linear. For the purpose of analysis, the constitutive laws can be characterized as coupled or uncoupled and linear or non linear. Coupled model is studied without assuming any explicit direct relationship with magnetic field. In the linear coupled model, which is assumed to preserve the magnetic flux line continuity, the elastic modulus, the permeability and magneto-elastic constant are assumed as constant. In the nonlinear-coupled model, the nonlinearity is decoupled and solved separately for the magnetic domain and the mechanical domain using two nonlinear curves, namely the stress vs. strain curve and the magnetic flux density vs. magnetic field curve. This is performed by two different methods. In the first, the magnetic flux density is computed iteratively, while in the second, the artificial neural network is used, where in the trained network will give the necessary strain and magnetic flux density for a given magnetic field and stress level. The effect of nonlinearity is demonstrated on a simple magnetostrictive rod.

The Ramberg-Osgood relation which adequately describes the stress-strain curve of a strain-hardening material is extended to formulate the constitutive laws for creep. The constitutive laws which describe primary creep adequately are extended to secondary creep. The results are verified for the case of R.R. 59 at 200°C, Nimonic 80A and Nimonic 90 alloys at 750°C.

The paper presents a rational approach to model the behavior of bonded soils within the frame work of hardening plasticity. The approach is based on the premise that the resistance of bonded materials is a superposition of the two components of cement bond strength and soil frictional strength and that the deformation of the soil is associated with the frictional component of stresses just as in the case of a remoulded soil, the bonds offering additional resistance at any given strain level. This concept is similar to two stiffnesses acting in parallel for the same strain response. The proposed model considers the constitutive laws separately for the two components (bond and frictional) and adds the two to get the overall response. The unbonded soil component is described by the well known 'modified Cam clay' model. The response of the bond component is also described by a strain softening elasto-plastic model, considering the behavior to be elastic up to the yield surface and elasto-plastic beyond yield surface. To illustrate the capability of the proposed, model some laboratory test results of both compression and-extension shear tests are predicted. Despite the model being simple, several typical features of the behavior of bonded materials are well reproduced. The model parameters are well defined and easily determinable.

This work aims at dimensional reduction of non-linear isotropic hyperelastic plates in an asymptotically accurate manner. The problem is both geometrically and materially non-linear. The geometric non-linearity is handled by allowing for finite deformations and generalized warping while the material non-linearity is incorporated through hyperelastic material model. The development, based on the Variational Asymptotic Method (VAM) with moderate strains and very small thickness to shortest wavelength of the deformation along the plate reference surface as small parameters, begins with three-dimensional (3-D) non-linear elasticity and mathematically splits the analysis into a one-dimensional (1-D) through-the-thickness analysis and a two-dimensional (2-D) plate analysis. Major contributions of this paper are derivation of closed-form analytical expressions for warping functions and stiffness coefficients and a set of recovery relations to express approximately the 3-D displacement, strain and stress fields. Consistent with the 2-D non-linear constitutive laws, 2-D plate theory and corresponding finite element program have been developed. Validation of present theory is carried out with a standard test case and the results match well. Distributions of 3-D results are provided for another test case. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Densification mechanisms involved during reactive hot pressing (RHP) of zirconium carbide (ZrC) have been studied. RHP has been carried out using zirconium (Zr) and graphite (C) powders in the molar ratios 1:0.5, 1:0.67, 1:0.8, and 1:1 at 40MPa, 800 degrees C-1200 degrees C for different durations. The volume fractions of phases formed, including porosity, are determined from the measured density and from Rietveld analysis. Increased densification with an increasing nonstoichiometry in carbon has been observed. Microstructural and X-ray diffraction observations coupled with the predictions of a model based on the constitutive laws governing plastic flow of zirconium suggest that the better densification of nonstoichiometric compositions arise from the higher amount of starting Zr and also the longer duration of its availability for plastic flow during RHP. Volume shrinkage due to reaction between Zr and C and the gradual elimination of the soft metal phase limit the final density achievable. Based on these observations, a two-step RHP carried out at 800 degrees C and 1200 degrees C leads to a better densification than a single RHP at 1200 degrees C.

This work intends to demonstrate the effect of geometrically non-linear cross-sectional analysis of certain composite beam-based four-bar mechanisms in predicting the three-dimensional warping of the cross-section. The only restriction in the present analysis is that the strains within each elastic body remain small (i.e., this work does not deal with materials exhibiting non-linear constitutive laws at the 3-D level). Here, all component bars of the mechanism are made of fiber-reinforced laminates. They could, in general, be pre-twisted and/or possess initial curvature, either by design or by defect. Each component of the mechanism is modeled as a beam based on geometrically non-linear 3-D elasticity theory. The component problems are thus split into 2-D analyses of reference beam cross-sections and non-linear 1-D analyses along the three beam reference curves. The splitting of the three-dimensional beam problem into two- and one-dimensional parts, called dimensional reduction, results in a tremendous savings of computational effort relative to the cost of three-dimensional finite element analysis, the only alternative for realistic beams. The analysis of beam-like structures made of laminated composite materials requires a much more complicated methodology. Hence, the analysis procedure based on Variational Asymptotic Method (VAM), a tool to carry out the dimensional reduction, is used here. The representative cross-sections of all component bars are analyzed using two different approaches: (1) Numerical Model and (2) Analytical Model. Four-bar mechanisms are analyzed using the above two approaches for Omega = 20 rad/s and Omega = pi rad/s and observed the same behavior in both cases. The noticeable snap-shots of the deformation shapes of the mechanism about 1000 frames are also reported using commercial software (I-DEAS + NASTRAN + ADAMS). The maximum out-of-plane warping of the cross-section is observed at the mid-span of bar-1, bar-2 and bar-3 are 1.5 mm, 250 mm and 1.0 mm, respectively, for t = 0:5 s. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The mechanical behaviors of 2124, Al-5Cu, Al-Li and 6061 alloys reinforced by silicon carbide particulates, together with 15%SiCw/6061 alloy, were studied under the quasi-static and impact loading conditions, using the split Hopkinson tension/compression bars and Instron universal testing machine. The effect of strain rate on the ultra tensile strength (UTS), the hardening modulus and the failure strain was investigated. At the same time, the SEM observations of dynamic fracture surfaces of various MMC materials showed some distinguished microstructures and patterns. Some new characteristics of asymmetry of mechanical behaviors of MMCs under tension and compression loading were also presented and explained in details, and they could be considered as marks to indicate, to some degree, the mechanism of controlling damage and failure of MMCs under impact loading. The development of new constitutive laws about MMCs under impact loading should benefit from these experimental results and theoretical analysis.

We study the behavior of granular materials at three length scales. At the smallest length scale, the grain-scale, we study inter-particle forces and "force chains". Inter-particle forces are the natural building blocks of constitutive laws for granular materials. Force chains are a key signature of the heterogeneity of granular systems. Despite their fundamental importance for calibrating grain-scale numerical models and elucidating constitutive laws, inter-particle forces have not been fully quantified in natural granular materials. We present a numerical force inference technique for determining inter-particle forces from experimental data and apply the technique to two-dimensional and three-dimensional systems under quasi-static and dynamic load. These experiments validate the technique and provide insight into the quasi-static and dynamic behavior of granular materials.

At a larger length scale, the mesoscale, we study the emergent frictional behavior of a collection of grains. Properties of granular materials at this intermediate scale are crucial inputs for macro-scale continuum models. We derive friction laws for granular materials at the mesoscale by applying averaging techniques to grain-scale quantities. These laws portray the nature of steady-state frictional strength as a competition between steady-state dilation and grain-scale dissipation rates. The laws also directly link the rate of dilation to the non-steady-state frictional strength.

At the macro-scale, we investigate continuum modeling techniques capable of simulating the distinct solid-like, liquid-like, and gas-like behaviors exhibited by granular materials in a single computational domain. We propose a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) approach for granular materials with a viscoplastic constitutive law. The constitutive law uses a rate-dependent and dilation-dependent friction law. We provide a theoretical basis for a dilation-dependent friction law using similar analysis to that performed at the mesoscale. We provide several qualitative and quantitative validations of the technique and discuss ongoing work aiming to couple the granular flow with gas and fluid flows.

In the field of vibration-based damage detection of concrete structures efficient damage models are needed to better understand changes in the vibration properties of cracked structures. These models should quantitatively replicate the damage mechanisms in concrete and easily be used as damage detection tools. In this paper, the flexural cracking behaviour of plain concrete prisms subject to monotonic and cyclic loading regimes under displacement control is tested experimentally and modelled numerically. Four-point bending tests on simply supported un-notched prisms are conducted, where the cracking process is monitored using a digital image correlation system. A numerical model, with a single crack at midspan, is presented where the cracked zone is modelled using the fictitious crack approach and parts outside that zone are treated in a linear-elastic manner. The model considers crack initiation, growth and closure by adopting cyclic constitutive laws. A multi-variate Newton-Raphson iterative solver is used to solve the non-linear equations to ensure equilibrium and compatibility at the interface of the cracked zone. The numerical results agree well with the experiments for both loading scenarios. The model shows good predictions of the degradation of stiffness with increasing load. It also approximates the crack-mouth-opening-displacement when compared with the experimental data of the digital image correlation system. The model is found to be computationally efficient as it runs full analysis for cyclic loading in less than 2. min, and it can therefore be used within the damage detection process. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Over the last 50 years, the city of Venice, Italy, has observed a significant increase in the frequency of flooding. Numerous engineering solutions have been proposed, including the use of movable gates located at the three lagoon inlets. A key element in the prediction of performance is the estimation of settlements of the foundation system of the gates. The soils of Venice Lagoon are characterized by very erratic depositional patterns of clayey silts, resulting in an extremely heterogeneous stratigraphy with discontinuous layering. The soils are also characterized by varying contents of coarse and fine-grained particles. In contrast, the mineralogical composition of these deposits is quite uniform, which allows us to separate the influence of mineralogy from that of grain size distribution. A comprehensive geotechnical testing program was performed to assess the one-dimensional compression of Venice soils and examine the factors affecting the response in the transition from one material type to another. The compressibility of these natural silty clayey soils can be described by a single set of constitutive laws incorporating the relative fraction of granular to cohesive material. © 2007 ASCE.

Predicting damage to masonry structures due to tunnelling-induced ground movements remains a challenge for practising design engineers. Useful simplified procedures exist, but more detailed analysis has the potential to improve these procedures. This paper considers the use of finite element modelling, including non-linear constitutive laws for the soil and the structure, to simulate damage to a simple masonry structure subjected to tunnelling in sand. The numerical model is validated through comparison with the results of a series of centrifuge tests and used to perform a sensitivity study on the effect of building weight and masonry damage on the structural response. Results show a direct correlation between the weight of the structure, normalised to the relative stiffness between the structure and the soil, and the modification of the settlement profile. By including a cracking model for the masonry, the reduction in structural stiffness caused by progressive masonry damage is also proven to affect the building deflection.

Solder joints are often the cause of failure in electronic devices, failing due to cyclic creep induced ductile fatigue. This paper will review the modelling methods available to predict the lifetime of SnPb and SnAgCu solder joints under thermo-mechanical cycling conditions such as power cycling, accelerated thermal cycling and isothermal testing, the methods do not apply to other damage mechanisms such as vibration or drop-testing. Analytical methods such as recommended by the IPC are covered, which are simple to use but limited in capability. Finite element modelling methods are reviewed, along with the necessary constitutive laws and fatigue laws for solder, these offer the most accurate predictions at the current time. Research on state-of-the-art damage mechanics methods is also presented, although these have not undergone enough experimental validation to be recommended at present

This paper develops an improved and accessible framework for modelling time-dependent behaviour of soils using the concepts of elasticity and viscoplasticity. The mathematical description of viscoplastic straining is formulated based on a purely viscoplastic and measurable phenomenon, namely creep. The resulting expression for the viscoplastic strain rates includes a measure of both effective stress and the corresponding volumetric packing of the soil particles. In this way, the model differs from some earlier viscoplastic models and arguably provides a better conceptual description of time-dependent behaviour. Analytical solutions are developed for the simulation of drained and undrained strain-controlled triaxial compression tests. The model is then used to back-analyze the measured response of normally consolidated to moderately overconsolidated specimens of a soft estuarine soil in undrained triaxial compression. The model captures aspects of soil behaviour that cannot be simulated using time-independent elastic–plastic models. Specifically, it can capture the dependence of stress–strain relationships and undrained shear strength on strain rate, the development of irrecoverable plastic strains at constant stress (creep), and the relaxation of stresses at constant strain
