The emergence of open source software in the last years has become a common topic of study in different fields, from the most technical characteristics to the economical aspects. This paper examines the current status about the literature dealing with economics of open source and explores the uses, infrastructure and expectations of retail businesses and institutions of the town of Igualda about it. This qualitative case study finds out that the current equipment and level of uses of ICTs are low and that the current situation of the town stores is receptive to a potential introduction of open source software.

BACKGROUND: Clinical practice does not always reflect best practice and evidence, partly because of unconscious acts of omission, information overload, or inaccessible information. Reminders may help clinicians overcome these problems by prompting the doctor to recall information that they already know or would be expected to know and by providing information or guidance in a more accessible and relevant format, at a particularly appropriate time. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of reminders automatically generated through a computerized system and delivered on paper to healthcare professionals on processes of care (related to healthcare professionals' practice) and outcomes of care (related to patients' health condition). SEARCH METHODS: For this update the EPOC Trials Search Co-ordinator searched the following databases between June 11-19, 2012: The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) and Cochrane Library (Economics, Methods, and Health Technology Assessment sections), Issue 6, 2012; MEDLINE, OVID (1946- ), Daily Update, and In-process; EMBASE, Ovid (1947- ); CINAHL, EbscoHost (1980- ); EPOC Specialised Register, Reference Manager, and INSPEC, Engineering Village. The authors reviewed reference lists of related reviews and studies. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included individual or cluster-randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-randomized controlled trials (NRCTs) that evaluated the impact of computer-generated reminders delivered on paper to healthcare professionals on processes and/or outcomes of care. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Review authors working in pairs independently screened studies for eligibility and abstracted data. We contacted authors to obtain important missing information for studies that were published within the last 10 years. For each study, we extracted the primary outcome when it was defined or calculated the median effect size across all reported outcomes. We then calculated the median absolute improvement and interquartile range (IQR) in process adherence across included studies using the primary outcome or median outcome as representative outcome. MAIN RESULTS: In the 32 included studies, computer-generated reminders delivered on paper to healthcare professionals achieved moderate improvement in professional practices, with a median improvement of processes of care of 7.0% (IQR: 3.9% to 16.4%). Implementing reminders alone improved care by 11.2% (IQR 6.5% to 19.6%) compared with usual care, while implementing reminders in addition to another intervention improved care by 4.0% only (IQR 3.0% to 6.0%) compared with the other intervention. The quality of evidence for these comparisons was rated as moderate according to the GRADE approach. Two reminder features were associated with larger effect sizes: providing space on the reminder for provider to enter a response (median 13.7% versus 4.3% for no response, P value = 0.01) and providing an explanation of the content or advice on the reminder (median 12.0% versus 4.2% for no explanation, P value = 0.02). Median improvement in processes of care also differed according to the behaviour the reminder targeted: for instance, reminders to vaccinate improved processes of care by 13.1% (IQR 12.2% to 20.7%) compared with other targeted behaviours. In the only study that had sufficient power to detect a clinically significant effect on outcomes of care, reminders were not associated with significant improvements. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: There is moderate quality evidence that computer-generated reminders delivered on paper to healthcare professionals achieve moderate improvement in process of care. Two characteristics emerged as significant predictors of improvement: providing space on the reminder for a response from the clinician and providing an explanation of the reminder's content or advice. The heterogeneity of the reminder interventions included in this review also suggests that reminders can improve care in various settings under various conditions.

This report describes the work accomplished to date on research project HR-173, A Computer Based Information System for County Equipment Cost Records, and presents the initial design for this system. The specific topics discussed here are findings from the analysis of information needs, the system specifications developed from these findings, and the proposed system design based upon the system specifications. The initial system design will include tentative input designs for capturing input data, output designs to show the output formats and the items to be output for use in decision making, file design showing the organization of information to be kept on each piece of equipment in the computer data file, and general system design explaining how the entire system will operate. The Steering Committee appointed by Iowa Highway Research Board is asked to study this report, make appropriate suggestions, and give approval to the proposed design subject to any suggestions made. This approval will permit the designer to proceed promptly with the development of the computer program implementation phase of the design.

Die Arbeit stellt einen strukturellen Rahmen zur Einordnung sowohl bisheriger als auch zukünftiger organisationstheoretischer und DV-technologischer Entwicklungen zur Umsetzung eines Computer Integrated Business (CIB) bereit. Dazu analysiert sie bisherige Ansätze und zukünftige Perspektiven eines CIB mittels theoretischer und empirischer Bearbeitungsverfahren. Die Notwendigkeit zur Unternehmensintegration ergibt sich aus dem betriebswirtschaftlichen Konzept der Arbeitsteilung, über die das Phänomen der Economies of Scale erschlossen wird. Die Arbeitsteilung wurde zum Gestaltungskonzept in den Fabriken der industriellen Revolution. Komplexe Arbeitsgänge wurden in spezialisierte Teilaufgaben zerlegt und nach Möglichkeit auf maschinelle bzw. technologische Potentiale übertragen. Die Zielsetzung lag zunächst in der Automatisierung des Materialflusses, während der Informationsfluss noch lange Zeit im Hintergrund stand. Mittlerweile ermöglichen leistungsfähige DV-Systeme auch die Automatisierung des Informationsflusses und damit die DV-gestützte Integration des Unternehmens, die den Kern des CIB-Konzeptes darstellt. Das CIB-Konzept wurde Ende der achtziger Jahre am Fraunhofer-Institut für Arbeitswirtschaft und Organisation als Erweiterung des Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) für Industrieunternehmen von Bullinger geprägt, jedoch in seiner Zielsetzung als Modell zur Totalintegration von Unternehmen danach nicht maßgeblich weiterentwickelt. Vielmehr wurden in der Folgezeit überwiegend Teilintegrationslösungen diskutiert, wie z. B. Konzepte zur Integration der Fertigung oder zur Unterstützung der Teamarbeit. Der Aspekt der umfassenden, unternehmensinternen Integration rückte Mitte der neunziger Jahre durch die an Popularität gewinnende Internet-Technologie an den Rand der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion. Erst nach dem Zusammenbruch der ersten Internet-Euphorie und der anschließenden wirtschaftlichen Rezession gewann das Integrationsthema am Anfang dieses Jahrzehnts mit Hinblick auf dadurch mögliche Kostenvorteile wieder an Bedeutung. Die Diskussion wurde jedoch mit starkem technologischem Fokus geführt (z. B. zum Thema Enterprise Application Integration) und Aspekte der Unternehmensorganisation wurden bestenfalls grob, jedoch nicht im Detail diskutiert. Die vorliegende Arbeit bearbeitet die CIB-Thematik umfassend sowohl aus unternehmensorganisatorischer als auch DV-technologischer Sicht und bewegt sich deshalb interdisziplinär zwischen den Wissenschaftsbereichen der Betriebswirtschaft und der Informatik. Die Untersuchung wird vor dem Hintergrund einer sozio-technologischen Unternehmensorganisation geführt, in der DV-technologische Potentiale neben humanen Potentialen zur Erreichung der Unternehmensziele eingesetzt werden. DV-technologische Potentiale übernehmen darin einerseits Integrationsaufgaben und werden andererseits aber selbst zum Integrationsziel. Die Herausforderung für die Unternehmensführung besteht in der Konfiguration des CIB und im Finden eines Gleichgewichts zwischen Arbeitsteilung und Integration auf der einen sowie humanen und technologischen Potentialen auf der anderen Seite, letztendlich aber auch in der Automatisierung der Integration. Die Automatisierung der Integration stellt mit Hinblick auf die durch Umweltveränderungen bedingte Konfigurationsanpassung ein bisher konzeptionell nur ansatzweise gelöstes Problem dar. Der technologischen Integrationsarchitektur sowie den verwendeten Methoden des Prozessdesigns und der Software-Entwicklung kommt bei der Lösung dieses Problems eine hohe Bedeutung zu. Über sie bestimmt sich die Anpassungsfähigkeit und geschwindigkeit des CIB. Es kann vermutet werden, dass eine Lösung jedoch erst erreicht wird, wenn sich die Unternehmensorganisation vom Konzept der zentralen Koordination abwendet und stattdessen an dezentralen Koordinationsmechanismen unter Verwendung ultrastabiler Anpassungsprogramme orientiert, wie sie z. B. in der Biologie bei Insektenkulturen untersucht wurden.

New information and communication technologies may be useful for providing more in-depth knowledge to students in many ways, whether through online multimedia educational material, or through online debates with colleagues, teachers and other area professionals in a synchronous or asynchronous manner. This paper focuses on participation in online discussion in e-learning courses for promoting learning. Although an important theoretical aspect, an analysis of literature reveals there are few studies evaluating the personal and social aspects of online course users in a quantitative manner. This paper aims to introduce a method for diagnosing inclusion and digital proficiency and other personal aspects of the student through a case study comparing Information System, Public Relations and Engineering students at a public university in Brazil. Statistical analysis and analysis of variances (ANOVA) were used as the methodology for data analysis in order to understand existing relations between the components of the proposed method. The survey methodology was also used, in its online format, as a research instrument. The method is based on using online questionnaires that diagnose digital proficiency and time management, level of extroversion and social skills of the students. According to the sample studied, there is no strong correlation between digital proficiency and individual characteristics tied to the use of time, level of extroversion and social skills of students. The differences in course grades for some components are partly due to subject 'Introduction to Economics' being offered to freshmen in Public Relations, whereas subject 'Economics in Engineering' is offered in the final semesters of Engineering and Information Systems courses. Therefore, the difference could be more tied to the respondent's age than to the course. Information Systems students were observed to be older, with access to computers and Internet at the workplace, compared to the other students who access the Internet more often from home. This paper presents a pilot study aimed at conducting a diagnosis that permits proposing actions for information and communication technology to contribute towards student education. Three levels of digital inclusion are described as a scale to measure whether information technology increases personal performance and professional knowledge and skills. This study may be useful for other readers interested in themes related to education in engineering. © 2013 IEEE.

An expert system (ES) is a class of computer programs developed by researchers in artificial intelligence. In essence, they are programs made up of a set of rules that analyze information about a specific class of problems, as well as provide analysis of the problems, and, depending upon their design, recommend a course of user action in order to implement corrections. ES are computerized tools designed to enhance the quality and availability of knowledge required by decision makers in a wide range of industries. Decision-making is important for the financial institutions involved due to the high level of risk associated with wrong decisions. The process of making decision is complex and unstructured. The existing models for decision-making do not capture the learned knowledge well enough. In this study, we analyze the beneficial aspects of using ES for decision- making process.

The object of this paper is presenting the University of Economics – Varna, using a 3D model with 3Ds MAX. Created in 1920, May 14, University of Economics - Varna is a cultural institution with a place and style of its own. With the emergence of the three-dimensional modeling we entered a new stage of the evolution of computer graphics. The main target is to preserve the historical vision, to demonstrate forward-thinking and using of future-oriented approaches.

A model of multiple criteria decision making is presented for selecting the “best” of a finite number of alternatives. Techniques of scoring the alternatives and weighting the criteria are combined with different evaluating procedures and amalgamated in an interactive algorithm. Application of this method for choosing the best tender in a competitive bidding is discussed and a case is presented in some detail.
