This paper details research that will explore the analysis of human behaviour via video surveillance. Digital computer images will be obtained from video footage of a real world scene, and positions of people in the scene will be identified and tracked through each frame in the sequence.

The noted positions will build into a pattern of motion that can be examined and classified. It is proposed that specific events, such as panic or fight situations, will have unique, and therefore identifying, characteristics that will enable automatic detection of such events.

It is envisaged that active cameras will be used when a situation of interest occurs, to enable more information to be extracted from the scene (e.g., panning to follow action, or zooming to enhance detail.)

A live film performance using magnificent 16mm featuring Dirk De Bruyn in person. Can an image be sonic and ephemeral in the digital age? Live 3-screen film projection, shadow-play and sound poetry plumbing 35 years of experimental film practice, laying bare those processes of graffiti production splattered across the alleyways and railway lines of the planet’s inner cities but whose performance threatens to become completely hidden inside the computer. Images scratched, dyed, bleached and redrawn by hand are brought together to immerse the audience in an aural-visual rant. Does the analogue answer back to the digital media explosion or merely succumb in an angry death rattle of lost causes? Rev presents a rare opportunity to see one of Australia’s most important experimental filmmakers presenting a unique expanded cinema event.

A altura do núcleo mostrou associação com o índice P/I (r=0,24;p=0,054).

This paper is a result of a fruitful cooperation between the computer science and the dental diagnosis experiences. The study presents a new approach of applying computer algorithms to radiographic images of dental implantation used for bone regeneration. We focus here only on the contribution of the computer assistance to the clinical research as the periodontal therapy is beyond the scope of this paper. The proposed system is based on a pattern recognition approach, directed to recognize density changes in the intra-bony affected areas of patients. It comprises different modules with new algorithms specially designed to treat the patients’ radiographic images more accurately. The system includes digitizing, detecting the complicated region of interest (ROI), defining reference area to correct any projection discrepancy of the follow up images, and finally to extract the distinguishing features of the ROI as a basis for determining the rate of new bone density accumulation. This study is applied to two typical dental cases for a patient who received two different operations. The results are very encouraging and more accurate than traditional techniques reported before.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain is used to detect depression disorder. However, a large number of MRI scans needs to be analyzed for such detection. Manual segmentation of the biomarkers in MRI scans by clinical experts can become time consuming and sometimes erroneous. This paper presents a study on computer-aided detection of depression from MRI scans. These systems have not yet been identified, categorized and compared in the literature. The paper covers fully automated to semi-automated detection systems. It also presents performance comparison for the considered systems.

The automatic characterization of particles in metallographic images has been paramount, mainly because of the importance of quantifying such microstructures in order to assess the mechanical properties of materials common used in industry. This automated characterization may avoid problems related with fatigue and possible measurement errors. In this paper, computer techniques are used and assessed towards the accomplishment of this crucial industrial goal in an efficient and robust manner. Hence, the use of the most actively pursued machine learning classification techniques. In particularity, Support Vector Machine, Bayesian and Optimum-Path Forest based classifiers, and also the Otsu's method, which is commonly used in computer imaging to binarize automatically simply images and used here to demonstrated the need for more complex methods, are evaluated in the characterization of graphite particles in metallographic images. The statistical based analysis performed confirmed that these computer techniques are efficient solutions to accomplish the aimed characterization. Additionally, the Optimum-Path Forest based classifier demonstrated an overall superior performance, both in terms of accuracy and speed. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The human dentition is naturally translucent, opalescent and fluorescent. Differences between the level of fluorescence of tooth structure and restorative materials may result in distinct metameric properties and consequently perceptible disparate esthetic behavior, which impairs the esthetic result of the restorations, frustrating both patients and staff. In this study, we evaluated the level of fluorescence of different composites (Durafill in tones A2 (Du), Charisma in tones A2 (Ch), Venus in tone A2 (Ve), Opallis enamel and dentin in tones A2 (OPD and OPE), Point 4 in tones A2 (P4), Z100 in tones A2 ( Z1), Z250 in tones A2 (Z2), Te-Econom in tones A2 (TE), Tetric Ceram in tones A2 (TC), Tetric Ceram N in tones A1, A2, A4 (TN1, TN2, TN4), Four seasons enamel and dentin in tones A2 (and 4SD 4SE), Empress Direct enamel and dentin in tones A2 (EDE and EDD) and Brilliant in tones A2 (Br)). Cylindrical specimens were prepared, coded and photographed in a standardized manner with a Canon EOS digital camera (400 ISO, 2.8 aperture and 1/ 30 speed), in a dark environment under the action of UV light (25 W). The images were analyzed with the software ScanWhite©-DMC/Darwin systems. The results showed statistical differences between the groups (p < 0.05), and between these same groups and the average fluorescence of the dentition of young (18 to 25 years) and adults (40 to 45 years) taken as control. It can be concluded that: Composites Z100, Z250 (3M ESPE) and Point 4 (Kerr) do not match with the fluorescence of human dentition and the fluorescence of the materials was found to be affected by their own tone.

In this paper we present a tool to carry out the multifractal analysis of binary, two-dimensional images through the calculation of the Rényi D(q) dimensions and associated statistical regressions. The estimation of a (mono)fractal dimension corresponds to the special case where the moment order is q = 0.
