A simple method for the design of ultra-wideband antennas in planar format is presented. This method is demonstrated for a high-dielectric-constant substrate material, which allows for a considerable antenna size reduction. Simulations are performed using Ansoft's High-Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) for antennas assuming Du-Pont951 (epsilon(r) = 7.8) and RT6010LM (epsilon(r) = 10.2) substrates. For the 1-mm-thick DuPont951, the designed antenna with 22 X 28 nun dimensions features a 10-dB return-loss band width front 2.7 GHz to more than 15 GHz. For the 0.64-mm-thick RT6010LM a 20 X 26 nun antenna exhibits a 10-dB return loss bandwidth from 3.1 to 15 GHz. Both antennas feature nearly omnidirectional properties across the whole 10-dB return-loss bandwidth. The validity of the presented UWB antenna design strategy is confirmed by measurements performed on a prototype developed on RT6010LM substrate. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The small element spacing of compact multiport arrays introduces strong mutual coupling between the antenna ports. Due to this coupling, the input impedance of the array changes when elements excitations are varied, and consequently, the array cannot be matched for an arbitrary excitation. Decoupling networks have in the past been used to provide an additional connection between antenna ports in order to cancel the coupling between elements. An alternative approach is to design the antenna so that each port does not excite a single element, but all elements simultaneously instead. The geometry of the antenna is optimized so that this direct excitation of elements counteracts the mutual coupling, thus yielding decoupled ports. This paper describes the design of such a 4-port antenna.

This article presents the analysis and design of a compact multi-layer layer, high selectivity wideband bandpass filter using stub loaded and `U' shaped resonators over a slotted bottom ground plane. While the resonators with folded open circuit stub loadings create the desired bandpass characteristics. the IT shaped resonators reduce the size of filter. The slotted bottom ground plane is used to enhance the coupling to achieve the desired bandwidth. The proposed filter has been analyzed using circuit model, and the results were verified through full wave simulations and measurements. The fabricated filter is compact and measures a size of 18 mm x 25 mm x 1.6 MM. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The ability to switch between propagating modes is important for body-centric applications such as medical body area networks where a single node may need to be able to optimise communications for either on-body sensor links or off-body links to the wider network. Therefore, we present a compact 2.45 GHz active mode-switching wearable antenna for both on-body and off-body wireless communications. The single-layer patch antenna was pattern-switched using shorting pins and had an impedance bandwidth of 253 MHz and 217 MHz for the on-body and off-body radiating modes, respectively. An efficiency of 57 % and 56.8 % was obtained for on-body and off-body mode respectively when placed in close proximity to a phantom that represents a muscle issue at 2.45 GHz.

A Digital Video Broadcast Terrestrial (DVB-T) based passive radar requires the development of an antenna array that performs satisfactorily over the entire DVB-T band. The array should require no mechanical adjustments to inter-element spacing to correspond to the DVB-T carrier frequency used for any particular measurement. This paper will describe the challenges involved in designing an antenna array with a bandwidth of 450 MHz. It will discuss the design procedure and demonstrate a number of simulated array configurations. The final configuration of the array will be shown as well as simulations of the expected performance over the desired frequency span.

The arrow shaped microstrip antenna, which produces dual frequency dual polarisation operation with considera-ble size reduction compared to conventional patches has been reported [I]. These antennas provide greater area reduction and improved gain compared to drum shaped patches [2]. Prediction of the resonance frequency of drum shaped patches [3] and circular patches for broadband operation [4] are available in the literature. In this Letter, we propose empirical formulas for calculating the resonance frequencies of the arrow shaped microstrip antenna. These antennas can be employed for obtaining dual frequency with the same polarisation, bandwidth enhancement, circular polarisation etc. by varying its different parameters or by introducing slots. The proposed design equations provide an easier and simple way of predicting the resonant frequencies of these patches.

A new microstrip antenna geometry with considerable reduction in size, with similar radiation characteristics to those of an equivalent rectangular patch antenna is proposed. A relationship has been suggested for fmding out the resonant frequency of the new geometry, and its validity has been established by the experimental results. Without increasing the aperture area, this geometry also offers a facility for considerably reducing the resonant frequency compared to conventional patches.

Experimental studies on a compact dual frequency microstrip antenna are presented. This antenna configuration provides an area reduction of 40% compared to a standard rectangular antenna operating at the same frequency without much degradation of the gain. The antenna structure can be modified to achieve the desired ratio between the two resonant frequencies
