Ce mémoire analyse les trajectoires de sortie de communautés juives ultraorthodoxes. Plus précisément, il cherche à mettre en lumière le processus par lequel certains juifs hassidiques parviennent à s’affranchir de leur communauté d’origine. Dans une recherche alliant entrevues, notes de terrain et observation,notre étude montre comment malgré la présence d’un fort contrôle social au sein de ces communautés ultra-religieuses certains de leurs membres le déjouent. Ce mémoire vise à repérer et à analyser les stratégies d’adaptation et les ruses mises en place par les hassidim pour échapper au contrôle et ainsi enclencher le processus de sortie. À la lumière de la théorie goffmanienne nous montrons comment dans un environnement contrôlant,les individus réussissent à s’aménager des marges de manoeuvre. C’est en se créant des espaces de liberté durant le processus de sortie qu’ils parviennent à avoir les coudées franches pour s’en affranchir définitivement.

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of the Florida State-mandated Basic Skills Exit Tests (BSET) on the effectiveness of remedial instruction programs to adequately serve the academically underprepared student population. The primary research question concerned whether the introduction of the BSET has resulted in remedial completers who are better prepared for college-level coursework. ^ This study consisted of an ex post facto research design to examine the impact of the BSET on student readiness for subsequent college-level coursework at Miami-Dade Community College. Two way analysis of variance was used to compare the performance of remedial and college-ready students before and after the introduction of the BSET requirement. Chi-square analysis was used to explore changes in the proportion of students completing and passing remedial courses. Finally, correlation analysis was used to explore the utility of the BSET in predicting subsequent college-level course performance. Differences based on subject area and race/ethnicity were explored. ^ The introduction of the BSET did not improve the performance of remedial completers in subsequent college-level courses in any of the subject areas. The BSET did have a negative impact on the success rate of students in remedial reading and mathematics courses. There was a significant decrease in minority students' likelihood of passing remedial reading and mathematics courses after the BSET was introduced. The reliability of the BSET is unacceptably low for all subject areas, based on estimates derived from administrations at M-DCC. Nevertheless, there was a significant positive relationship between BSET score and grade point average in subsequent college-level courses. This relationship varied by subject area and ethnicity, with the BSET reading score having no relationship with subsequent course performance for Black non-Hispanic students. ^ The BSET had no discernable positive effect on remedial student performance in subsequent college-level courses. In other words, the BSET has not enhanced the effectiveness of the remedial programs to prepare students for later coursework at M-DCC. The BSET had a negative impact on the progress and success of students in remedial reading and mathematics. ^

Background: There is an urgent need to increase population levels of physical activity, particularly amongst those who are socio-economically disadvantaged. Multiple factors influence physical activity behaviour but the generalisability of current evidence to such ‘hard-to-reach’ population subgroups is limited by difficulties in recruiting them into studies. Also, rigorous qualitative studies of lay perceptions and perceptions of community leaders about public health efforts to increase physical activity are sparse. We sought to explore, within a socio-economically disadvantaged community, residents’ and community leaders’ perceptions of physical activity (PA) interventions and issues regarding their implementation, in order to improve understanding of needs, expectations, and social/environmental factors relevant to future interventions.

Methods: Within an ongoing regeneration project (Connswater Community Greenway), in a socio-economically disadvantaged community in Belfast, we collaborated with a Community Development Agency to purposively sample leaders from public- and voluntary-sector community groups and residents. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 leaders. Residents (n=113), of both genders and a range of ages (14 to 86 years) participated in focus groups (n=14) in local facilities. Interviews and focus groups were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using a thematic framework.

Results: Three main themes were identified: awareness of PA interventions; factors contributing to intervention effectiveness; and barriers to participation in PA interventions. Participants reported awareness only of interventions in which they were involved directly, highlighting a need for better communications, both inter- and intra-sectoral, and with residents. Meaningful engagement of residents in planning/organisation, tailoring to local context, supporting volunteers, providing relevant resources and an ‘exit strategy’ were perceived as important factors related to intervention effectiveness. Negative attitudes such as apathy, disappointing experiences, information with no perceived personal relevance and limited access to facilities were barriers to people participating in interventions.

Conclusions: These findings illustrate the complexity of influences on a community’s participation in PA interventions and support a social-ecological approach to promoting PA. They highlight the need for cross-sector working, effective information exchange, involving residents in bottom-up planning and providing adequate financial and social support. An in-depth understanding of a target population’s perspectives is of key importance in translating PA behaviour change theories into practice.

Background: We examined whether higher effort-reward imbalance (ERI) and lower job control are associated with exit from the labour market. 

Methods: There were 1263 participants aged 50-74 years from the English Longitudinal Study on Ageing with data on working status and work-related psychosocial factors at baseline (wave 2; 2004-2005), and working status at follow-up (wave 5; 2010-2011). Psychosocial factors at work were assessed using a short validated version of ERI and job control. An allostatic load index was formed using 13 biological parameters. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Exit from the labour market was defined as not working in the labour market when 61 years old or younger in 2010-2011. 

Results: Higher ERI OR=1.62 (95% CI 1.01 to 2.61, p=0.048) predicted exit from the labour market independent of age, sex, education, occupational class, allostatic load and depression. Job control OR=0.60 (95% CI 0.42 to 0.85, p=0.004) was associated with exit from the labour market independent of age, sex, education, occupation and depression. The association of higher effort OR=1.32 (95% CI 1.01 to 1.73, p=0.045) with exit from the labour market was independent of age, sex and depression but attenuated to non-significance when additionally controlling for socioeconomic measures. Reward was not related to exit from the labour market. 

Conclusions: Stressful work conditions can be a risk for exiting the labour market before the age of 61 years. Neither socioeconomic position nor allostatic load and depressive symptoms seem to explain this association.

The June 2010 conflict between the Kyrgyz and Uzbek communities in southern Kyrgyzstan once again demonstrated the complexity of the ethnic question in Central Asia. Little is known, however, about the Uzbeks in Kazakhstan, whose settlements are concentrated in the south of the republic, in areas adjacent to Uzbekistan. What problems did the Kazakhstani Uzbeks face after the collapse of the Soviet Union and how did they seek to address these issues? This paper examines the attempts of Uzbek leaders to secure their share of power in their compact settlements and how they were co-opted or marginalized under the Nazarbaev administration. This paper shows that loyalty to the regime, not migration to the ethnic homeland or political mobilization, is an option available, and also preferable, for this ethnic minority in Kazakhstan.

La tesi analizza il fenomeno dell'Equity Crowdfunding con particolare attenzione alle strategie di disinvestimento. Si basa sull'analisi di un campione di 100 progetti finanziati sulla piattaforma Crowdcube. Il crowdfunding è un meccanismo di finanziamento collettivo che nasce fondamentalmente dall’esigenza di piccoli progetti di reperire capitale per essere sviluppati. Si sviluppa mediante l’ausilio di piattaforme informatiche, che fungono da tramite tra le parti interessate, permettendo ai promotori di lanciare i progetti e presentarli al pubblico, ed ai potenziali investitori di informarsi riguardo le diverse opportunità ed eventualmente partecipare alle iniziative. Si crea in questo modo una community virtuale, che si muove attraverso meccanismi differenti rispetto ai classici canali di finanziamento, e offre nuove opportunità agli ideatori di progetti così come agli investitori. Esistono diversi modelli di crowdfunding, che si differenziano per le rispettive finalità, le modalità di raccolta fondi e le forme di compenso. In particolare, risulta importante soffermarsi sull’equity crowdfunding, che si distingue dagli altri modelli in quanto raccoglie denaro che viene impiegato direttamente nel capitale di rischio dell’azienda finanziata. È il modello che attualmente riscuote maggior successo in termini di quote raccolte. La ricompensa è di tipo economico e si realizza attraverso il disinvestimento della quota di partecipazione, entro una data finestra temporale e secondo le modalità delineate inizialmente dal promotore del progetto. Le modalità di disinvestimento sono dette “exit strategies” e consistono negli obiettivi che i promotori dei progetti si propongono di realizzare dopo aver lanciato ed amministrato per un certo intervallo temporale i propri business, e sono rilevanti per gli investitori in quanto rappresentano il meccanismo attraverso il quale essi si aspettano un guadagno dall’investimento effettuato.
