This work is focused on the subject of air radio navigation systems embedded on aircraft and in the ground stations. Initially is presented a historical context and motivation of the chosen theme. In the following chapters the basics avionics systems are presented, ADF, VOR, DME and ILS such that there is a deepening of electronics theory behind the operation of each system. In this graduate work were presented theories involved in systems such as the definition and creation of radio waves, the frequency spectrum used by each system, the modulation and demodulation of waves, the operating block diagrams of embedded receiver in the aircraft and the terrestrial source station, and the errors involved in the use of each system

The use of ideal equivalent circuits which represent the electrical response of a physical device is a very common practice in microwave and millimeter wave circuit design. However, these equivalent circuit models only get accurate results in a certain frequency range. In this document, some basic devices have been analyzed, with several equivalent circuit models for each one. Physical devices have been manufactured and measured, and measurements have been compared with the responses obtained from the equivalent models. From this comparison, it?s possible to see what equivalent models are more advisable in each case and which are their limitations.

In this paper the use of the NDF is proposed as a general method suitable for analysing any oscillator topology. The most important advantage of this method is that it provides an unique procedure to analyse any oscillator. It also makes possible the phase noise optimization in the linear design phase for any oscillator. An additional advantage of this method is that it does not require any proviso verification as all classic methods need. The use of the NDF method is illustrated with the design of two examples. These two oscillators are manufactured and the simulation results are compared with the measurements showing good agreement. These results confirm the excellent possibilities of the proposed method for low noise oscillators design.

Frequency selective surfaces (FSS) and reflect/trasmitarrays are mostly designed on the basis ot optimization using an electromagnetic simulator. That is a time consuming method and some decisions have to be taken using simply intuition. The use of equivalent circuits of the scatterers selected for the design allows the substitution of the intuition and most part of the optimization process by the application of the classic rules of filter design. This communication presents all the steps necessary to obtain the equivalent circuit of different square scatterers in a periodic lattice and to implement the desired FSS frequency behaviour calculating the number of layers and the dimensions of the periodic cells. Several examples are included to evaluate the results.

Music composition using prominent broadcast speeches across the whole twentieth century in commemoration of the centenary of Marconi's first transatlantic radio transmission. The work is based on creating music from the found objects of melody derived from spoken intonation. Recordings of the speeches are accompanied throughout by live instrumental music.

This article explores the role of radio sound in establishing what I term ‘affective rhythms’ in everyday life. Through exploring the affective qualities of radio sound and its capacity for mood generation in the home, this article explores personal affective states and personal organisation. The term affective rhythm relates both to mood, and to routine. It is the combination of both that allows the possibility of thinking about sound and affect, and how they relate to, and integrate with, routine everyday life. The notion of ‘affective rhythm’ forces us to consider the idea of mood in the light of the routine nature of everyday domestic life.

In this paper, we present recent results with using range from radio for mobile robot localization. In previous work we have shown how range readings from radio tags placed in the environment can be used to localize a robot. We have extended previous work to consider robustness. Specifically, we are interested in the case where range readings are very noisy and available intermittently. Also, we consider the case where the location of the radio tags is not known at all ahead of time and must be solved for simultaneously along with the position of the moving robot. We present results from a mobile robot that is equipped with GPS for ground truth, operating over several km.
