Combinatorics on Words. New Aspects on Avoidability, Defect Effect, Equations and Palindromes

In this thesis we examine four well-known and traditional concepts of combinatorics on words. However the contexts in which these topics are treated are not the traditional ones. More precisely, the question of avoidability is asked, for example, in terms of k-abelian squares. Two words are said to be k-abelian equivalent if they have the same number of occurrences of each factor up to length k. Consequently, k-abelian equivalence can be seen as a sharpening of abelian equivalence. This fairly new concept is discussed broader than the other topics of this thesis. The second main subject concerns the defect property. The defect theorem is a well-known result for words. We will analyze the property, for example, among the sets of 2-dimensional words, i.e., polyominoes composed of labelled unit squares. From the defect effect we move to equations. We will use a special way to define a product operation for words and then solve a few basic equations over constructed partial semigroup. We will also consider the satisfiability question and the compactness property with respect to this kind of equations. The final topic of the thesis deals with palindromes. Some finite words, including all binary words, are uniquely determined up to word isomorphism by the position and length of some of its palindromic factors. The famous Thue-Morse word has the property that for each positive integer n, there exists a factor which cannot be generated by fewer than n palindromes. We prove that in general, every non ultimately periodic word contains a factor which cannot be generated by fewer than 3 palindromes, and we obtain a classification of those binary words each of whose factors are generated by at most 3 palindromes. Surprisingly these words are related to another much studied set of words, Sturmian words.

Incluye también una guía de recursos para aprender catalán desde las Islas Baleares: cursos, centros de autoaprendizaje, recursos en soporte informático o accesibles a través de Internet, que se adaptan a las necesidades de todos los que desean aprender esta lengua.

A sociocultural analysis of language learning: New forms of literacy practices in a language and culture awareness programme

This paper reports on a sociocultural study conducted in a Catholic primary school in the Australian outback and provides insights into how policy related to Languages Other Than English (LOTE) programmes is implemented in a specific location and interwoven within the literacy practices of children, parents and teachers. A case study that tracked a Year Four student's learning and development during a Language and Culture Awareness Programme is discussed within a discourse of cultural and linguistic practices. Significant aspects of the student's learning related to a phenomenon called multi-tiered scaffolding temporarily disrupted the established literacy practices in the school community. Implications of the research for second-language teaching and learning in Australian primary schools are elaborated.

Presentació. El pairalisme: reflexions sobre una paraula, un concepte i dues conjuntures

A gairebé ningú no li estranyarà un número monogràfic d'Estudis d’Història Agrària dedicat al “pairalisme”. El terme resulta familiar al lector habitual de llibres d'història i aquest lector no ignora -és possible que l’existència d'aquest número el faci reflexionar sobre això- que el fenomen ha estat poc estudiat. Poques vegades deu passar, però, que una paraula d'aquest tipus -una paraula de rel occitana, però que respon a una creació intel•lectual d’aquí- hagi adquirit un significat precís al marge dels diccionaris i de les enciclopèdies. Perquè ni la paraula “pairalisme” ni l’adjectiu “pairalista” han estat objecte de definició en cap dels diccionaris més usuals de la llengua catalana. En el diccionari Pompeu Fabra, en el de la Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana, i en el més recent de l’Institut d'Estudis Catalans apareix únicament pairal, com a adjectiu, i amb una definició molt breu i molt concreta: “dels pares”
