Mantle dynamics and seismic tomography

Three-dimensional imaging of the Earth's interior, called seismic tomography, has achieved breakthrough advances in the last two decades, revealing fundamental geodynamical processes throughout the Earth's mantle and core. Convective circulation of the entire mantle is taking place, with subducted oceanic lithosphere sinking into the lower mantle, overcoming the resistance to penetration provided by the phase boundary near 650-km depth that separates the upper and lower mantle. The boundary layer at the base of the mantle has been revealed to have complex structure, involving local stratification, extensive structural anisotropy, and massive regions of partial melt. The Earth's high Rayleigh number convective regime now is recognized to be much more interesting and complex than suggested by textbook cartoons, and continued advances in seismic tomography, geodynamical modeling, and high-pressure–high-temperature mineral physics will be needed to fully quantify the complex dynamics of our planet's interior.

Blending in English Charactoons

This article deals with both the word-formation mechanism of blending and the creative process involved in providing characters with proper names in cartoons or TV series for children in English. The study addresses the nature and features of proper and common names, two apparently well-distinguished categories, as well as, and basically fictional proper names, by suggesting differences between fictional proper names and other types of proper and common names. Furthermore, it discusses the presence of blending in fiction and in fictional proper names, with special reference to charactonyms. The main focus of this work is on blended charactonyms in cartoons addressed to children, which for the purposes of this study will be called cartoonyms or charactoons. Questions such as the following are addressed: the formation or creation of cartoonyms or charactoons from pre-existing material; the semantic motivations behind their formation; their resulting structural complexity; their particularly descriptive, expressive and meaningful nature; as well as how suitable they are to the genre in which they are used.

La figura del gaucho en la historieta argentina. De las versiones del Martín Fierro a Inodoro Pereyra

Entre los múltiples personajes propios de la literatura latinoamericana, posiblemente el gaucho argentino ha sido el que ha despertado un mayor interés por la creación literaria, con el Martín Fierro de José Hernández como buque insignia de una amplia tradición. Esta se ve recogida muy pronto por la narración gráfica, ya sea a través de las ilustraciones de las ediciones clásicas, o en las adaptaciones de las grandes obras en revistas de historietas. Todas ellas van configurando una iconografía que completa el imaginario de los guachos, fundamental para la identidad argentina. En el siguiente trabajo haremos una panorámica de las historietas de gauchos desde las revistas tradicionales, las adaptaciones de obras literarias, como las del Martín Fierro, hasta personajes propios como Lindor Covas o Inodoro Pereyra.
