Geologic and geomorphologic mapping are important ways to characterize the environment, because they look to describe and diagnose landforms, identifying and understanding the morphogenetic processes, making it possible to comprehend the landscape dynamic. This work aimed to make a geological and geomorphological map, in a 1:10.000 scale, of the Morro Azul, the main elevation in the city of Limeira – SP, with the application of photogeological techniques and field descriptions. As final products are presented a geological-geomorphological map, a topographical profile, a slope map, beyond the main characteristics of the geological-geomorphological units of the area. This study presents itself as a preliminary work, and can serve as a subsidy to more specific works, such as geotechnics, environmental problems, among others

The two-colored m ap con tains firn edge, transient snow line and out lines of the moraines of the advances of about 1850 and 1920. All signals of the trigonometric network are entered in the map and tabulated in the text.

The Geotechnical Mapping is an extreme important tool for the urban planning, so the public authorities can establish guidelines for medium and long term for a better life conditions for the population. The division region between the cities of Americana and Santa Bárbara D’Oeste has an intense conurbation problem, which is causing problems of occupation in risks areas on environmental terms. In this context this project has as an objective the elaboration of a Geotechnical Map from the sub- basins of Sossego and Barracão rivers, whicht are located in between the area of the two cities, and presents some of the process causes of the conurbation problem. For this study, the following steps were proposed: bibliographic and topographic maps research for better knowledge from the theme and the area, and also preparing cartographic basis; making of preliminary geotechnical area map with a 1:10.000 scale, gather all the information acquired at the previous step and compartmentation of the area; field step to collect more information and soil for the laboratory analysis, objecting the characterization of the geotechnical unities; lab analysis; final geotechnical map preparation; and final report elaboration. The final product of this study is the Final Geotechnical Map, with a 1:10.000 scale, and the principal objective is to help the urban planning

En este artículo se muestran los diversos campos de aplicación de los sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIGs), para lo cual se intenta presentar una clasificación de las áreas del conocimiento donde se están llevando a cabo las más importantes aplicaciones. La anterior clasificación no supone que sea única ni estándar, sólo busca ofrecer al lector una forma de conocer las más diversas aplicaciones de esta moderna tecnología. Posteriormente, se presentan dos estudios de casos, los cuales fueron desarrollados en el laboratorio de Sistemas de Información Geográfica de la Escuela de Ciencias Geográficas de la Universidad Nacional (LSIGAE-ECG). Estos dos casos fueron elegidos por tratarse de aplicaciones diferentes, la primera de ellas dirigida a la implementación del SIG en el proceso de Zonificación Agroecológica y la segunda, a la Actualización de la Cartografía 1:10.000, el caso de la región Heredia. ABSTRACT This article shows the diversity of fields applying Geographical Information Systems technologies. A classification of the most known areas implementing these technology is presented. This classification does not pretend to be the only or standard classification. The idea is to offer the reader a format for introducing the most diverse applications of this modern technology. Afterwards, two case studies are presented which were carried out in the Geographical Information Systems Laboratory of the School of Geographical Sciences of the National University of Costa Rica (LSIGAE-ECG). The two case studies were chosen to present different applications; the firs directed to the implementation of GIS in the process of Agro-Ecological Zonification and the second regarding the Actualization of the Cartographic Map Series 1:10.000, Case study of the Region of Heredia.

Se realiza un ensayo metodológico que nos permite valorar el poder de discriminación, el grado de utilidad y dificultades de empleo de la fotografla aérea, para cartografía de vegetación actual en territorios de gran complejidad. Se cartografían 29 tipos de vegetación, para los cuales, agrupados por clases, se dan características para su fotointerpretación.

10,000 Steps Rockhampton is a multi-strategy health promotion program which aims to develop sustainable community-based strategies to increase physical activity.The central coordinating focus of the project is the use of pedometers to raise awareness of and provide motivation for physical activity, around the theme of '10,000 steps/day - Every step counts.' To date, five key strategies have been implemented: (1) a media-based awareness raising campaign; (2) promotion of physical activity by health professionals; (3) improving social support for physical activity through group-based programs; (4) working with local council to improve environmental support for physical activity, and; (5) establishment of a ‘micro-grants’ fund to which community groups could apply for assistance with small, innovative physical activity enhancing projects. Strategies were introduced on a rolling basis beginning in February 2002 with 'layering' of interventions designed to address the multi-level individual social and environmental determinants of physical activity. The project was quasi-experimental in design, involving collection of baseline and two year follow-up data from community based surveys in Rockhampton and in a matched regional Queensland town. In August 2001,the baseline CATI survey (N=1281)found that 47.9% of men and 33.0% of women were meeting the national guidelines for physical activity. In August 2002, a smaller survey (N=400) found an increase in activity levels among women (39.7% active) but not in men (48.5%). Data from the two year follow up survey, to be conducted in August 2003, will be presented, with discussion of the major successes and challenges of this landmark physical activity intervention. Background Pedometers have become common place in physical activity promotion, yet little information exists on who is using them. The multi-strategy, community-based 10,000 Steps Rockhampton physical activity intervention trial provided an opportunity to examine correlates of pedometer use at the population level. Methods Pedometer use was promoted across all intervention strategies including: local media, pedometer loan schemes through general practice, other health professionals and libraries, direct mail posted to dog owners, walking trail signage, and workplace competitions. Data on pedometer use were collected during the 2-year follow-up telephone interviews from random population samples in Rockhampton, Australia, and a matched comparison community (Mackay). Logistic regression analyses were used to determine the independent influence of interpersonal characteristics and program exposure variables on pedometer use. Results Data from 2478 participants indicated that 18.1% of Rockhampton and 5.6% of Mackay participants used a pedometer in the previous 18-months. Rockhampton pedometer users (n = 222) were more likely to be female (OR = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.11, 2.23), aged 45 or older (OR = 1.69, 95% CI: 1.16, 2.46) and to have higher levels of education (university degree OR = 4.23, 95% CI: 1.86, 9.6). Respondents with a BMI > 30 were more likely to report using a pedometer (OR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.11, 2.54) than those in the healthy weight range. Compared with those in full-time paid work, respondents in 'home duties' were significantly less likely to report pedometer use (OR = 0.18, 95% CI: 0.06, 0.53). Exposure to individual program components, in particular seeing 10,000 Steps street signage and walking trails or visiting the website, was also significantly associated with greater pedometer use. Conclusion Pedometer use varies between population subgroups, and alternate strategies need to be investigated to engage men, people with lower levels of education and those in full-time 'home duties', when using pedometers in community-based physical activity promotion initiatives.
