In vitro safety assessment of papain on human skin: A qualitative Light and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) study

Papain is a thiol proteolytic enzyme widely used in dermatology that found applications in wound treatment. Recently, papain was also used as absorption enhancer which can modify the peptide/ protein material in the bilayer domain. We investigated papain safety using human skin that was exposed to papain in vitro at different times: 4, 24 and 48 hours. The samples were examined using Light and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) to study of the mechanisms involved in enhancer-skin interaction. After 24 hours, changes occurred in corneosomes. However, samples of 48 hours did not show major changes in agreement with the control. These findings indicated that papain could be used safely onto the skin.

Marine Yeasts from the Slope Sediments of Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal

The present study provides an account of the occurrence and diversity of marine yeasts in the slope sediments of Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. It also gives a clear idea about the role of yeasts in the benthic realm of marine ecosystem. The lipolytic potential of the organisms indicate the presence of rich lipid moieties in the study area. The isolates, Candida sp. SD 302 and Pichia guilliermondii SD 337 were proved to have potential oil degrading property and can be employed as bioremediators of oil spill after further characterization. The black yeasts isolated during the study area were found to have high commercial value by virtue of the by-products obtained from them. The melanin and the melanin degrading enzyme extracted from these organisms are potential bioactive materials for application in cosmetology.

Antioxidantes como substâncias cosmetologicamente activas

A importância que os cosméticos têm hoje em dia é inegável. Este é um mercado crescente, sobretudo na área de produtos que visem cuidar da pele, não só apostando na manutenção e recuperação de uma pele saudável e com boa aparência, como na prevenção de possíveis alterações a que a pele está sujeita. O uso de antioxidantes em cosmetologia é assim uma prática cada vez mais frequente, tanto na sua vertente oral como tópica, contudo ainda se têm que efectuar muitos mais estudos, não só de modo a averiguar a segurança do uso destes compostos a longo prazo, como também para descobrir novos sinergismos entre moléculas e sobretudo novas formas de veiculação. Nesta dissertação são abordados diferentes aspectos introdutórios, tais como o envelhecimento cutâneo – tanto na sua vertente intrínseca, como extrínseca – radicais livres e stress oxidativo, e respectivos mecanismos de defesa, de forma a facilitar a compreensão sobre alguns aspectos sobre antioxidantes específicos, nomeadamente: vitamina A, E, C, coenzima Q10, carotenóides e polifenóis.

Modelagem molecular aplicada ao desenvolvimento de moléculas com atividade antioxidante visando ao uso cosmético

Some hypotheses and constants studies are made with intention to elucidate the aging process. To prevent and to attenuate the cutaneous aging it becomes necessary to strengthen our endogenous antioxidant natural defenses. Diverse exogenous antioxidant substances, as vitamins, vegetal extracts and others, have been used by the Cosmetology in antiaging products. The objective of this paper is to show how the Molecular Modeling can be an useful tool in the research for new antioxidant cosmetic substances to face the cutaneous aging.
