Anaerobic treatment as a first biological stage in wastewater treatment is nowadays a well-established technology in recycled paper processing mills using closed water circuits. Today further developed high-rate processes and especially high-tower reactors are also able to handle lower organic loads and become therefore feasible for deinking pulp plant effluents. The interest in the anaerobic method is based on a positive energy balance in form of biogas production and low biomass yield from the process. The anaerobic treatment method was researched and its suitability for the deinking pulp plant effluents was tested experimentally at Stora Enso Maxau mill. In the theory, the deinking pulp process is introduced and the effluents from the deinking process are characterized. The anaerobic treatment is brought up in depth in terms of its use for the deinking effluents, and different kind of reactor types are presented. In addition, other wastewater treatment methods are shortly introduced with the focus on tertiary treatment. Static biodegradability tests were carried out for the wastewaters both anaerobically and aerobically. Based on the results, the deinking effluents can be degraded anaerobically, and inhibition to the methanogenic bacteria was not noticed. In the aerobic static test a good performance of the existing wastewater treatment plant at Maxau mill was proved. Later on pilot trials with sequential anaerobic-aerobic treatment were carried out for the deinking effluents. The anaerobic reactor used was a so called internal circulation reactor. The results confirmed that the combination of the anaerobic treatment and the aerobic activated sludge process is a suitable method for deinking wastewaters with a COD reduction as good as with a two stage aerobic method. When combined with the outstanding quality of the produced biogas and the cost savings acquired from the lower sludge production, the anaerobic treatment was found to be an especially favorable treatment method.

Työ on tehty USF Aquaflow Oy:lle osana Cleantech 2000-projektia. USF Aquaflow Oy on suunnitellut minimibiolietetuottoisen reaktorin, MBP-reaktorin, toimivaksi osana aktiivilieteprosessia. Työn tavoitteena oli selvittää MBP-reaktorin toimintaa massateollisuuden peroksidipitoisilla jätevesillä. Pääpaino asetettiin MBP-reaktorin mikrobiologian tutkimiseen. Aktiivilieteprosessissa syntyvä bioliete on yksi metsäteollisuuden merkittävimmistä sivuainevirroista, jonka tuotantoa pyritään vähentämään ja käsiteltävyyttä parantamaan. MBP-reaktori aktiivilieteprosessissa vähentää koko prosessin lietteentuottoa, nostaa lietteen kuiva-ainepitoisuutta ja vähentää näin lietteen vaatimaa jatkokäsittelyn tarvetta. Työssä tutkittiin kahdella erilaisella jätevesijakeella peroksidin vaikutusta MBP-reaktorin COD-reduktioon, kiintoaineen kasvuun, lietteentuottoon ja mikrobiologiaan eri pituisilla viiveillä. MBP-reaktorin viive on suunniteltu aktiivilieteprosessin ilmastusaltaan viivettä huomattavasti lyhyemmäksi. Työn tuloksien perusteella lyhyellä viiveellä MBP-reaktorissa käynnistyy tehokas bakteeritoiminta, joka kuluttaa jäteveden COD:ta. Sellutehtaan jätevesille MBP-reaktorin toiminta on heikompaa kuin termomekaanisen massanvalmistuksen jätevesillä, johtuen sellun valmistuksessa käytetyistä kemikaaleista. Jätevedenpuhdistamon lietteen määrän vähentäminen on tällä hetkellä metsäteollisuuden tehtailla tärkeä jatkotutkimuksia vaativa kohde. MBP-reaktorin toiminnan takaamiseksi osana aktiivilieteprosessia tulisi jatkotutkimuksia suorittaa eri tyyppisille jätevesijakeille ja tarkkailla useampien kemikaalien vaikutusta reaktorin mikrobiologiaan, COD-reduktioon ja lietteentuottoon.

Työn tavoitteena oli tutkia kiertoveden puhdistamiseen käytetyn kalvosuodatuksen esikäsittelymenetelmien vaikutusta ultrasuodatukseen. Suodatettava vesi oli kierrätyskuitua käyttävän paperikoneen kiekkosuotimen kirkassuodosta. Koeajon loppuosassa käytettiin biokirkassuodosta. Paperitehtaassa oli suljettu vesikierto. Pilot-laitteistona käytettiin Metso PaperChemin OptiFilter CR550/40 ultrasuodatusyksikköä. Testatut kalvot olivat C30 kalvoja.

In this paper, the microbial characteristics of the granular sludge in the presence of oxygen (3.0 +/- 0.7 mg O-2 1(-1)) were analyzed using molecular biology techniques. The granules were provided by an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) operated over 469 days and fed with synthetic substrate. Ethanol and sulfate were added to obtain different COD/SO42- ratios (3.0, 2.0, and 1.6). The results of fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) analyses showed that archaeal cells, detected by the ARC915 probe, accounted for 77%, 84%, and 75% in the COD/SO42- ratios (3.0, 2.0, and 1.6, respectively). Methanosaeta sp. was the predominant acetoclastic archaea observed by optical microscopy and FISH analyses, and confirmed by sequencing of the excised bands of the DGGE gel with a similarity of 96%. The sulfate-reducing bacterium Desulfovibrio vulgaris subsp. vulgaris (similarity of 99%) was verified by sequencing of the DGGE band. Others identified microorganism were similar to Shewanella sp. and Desulfitobacterium hafniense, with similarities of 95% and 99%, respectively. These results confirmed that the presence of oxygen did not severely affect the metabolism of microorganisms that are commonly considered strictly anaerobic. We obtained mean efficiencies of organic matter conversion and sulfate reducing higher than 74%. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The objective of this research was to examine how various factors in Icelandic cod fishing can influence the quality of the raw material, using traceability systems to link these factors, and how transfer that knowledge and techniques to the Brazilian seafood industry. Data were collected in 2007 and analysed, to find a functional relationship between various quality factors. The analysis, showed, that there is a correlation between the number of parasites in the fillets and location of the fishing ground. It also showed that fishing ground and volume in haul can influence gaping, and that fillet yield differs between fishing grounds. These conclusions could only be drawn because of the ability to trace the fish from catch and all the way through processing. Recommendations drawn from this research to the Brazilian Competent Authority are to revise the countries fisheries legislation in order to enable the implementation of a traceability system that could be used as a tool to improve the quality of the raw material. The volume of the primary (PCS) and secondary (SCS) circulatory system in the Atlantic cod Gadus morhua was determined using a modified dye dilution technique. Cod (N=10) were chronically cannulated in the second afferent branchial artery with PE-50 tubing. Evans Blue dye was bound to harvested fish plasma at a concentration of 1 mg dye ml(-1) plasma, and injected at a concentration of 1 mg kg(-1) body mass. Serial sampling from the cannula produced a dye dilution curve, which could be described by a double exponential decay equation. Curve analysis enabled the calculation of the primary circulatory and total distribution volume. The difference between these volumes is assumed to be the volume of the SCS. From the dilution curve, it was also possible to calculate flow rates between and within the systems. The results of these experiments suggest a plasma volume in the PCS of 3.42+/-0.89 ml 100 g(-1) body mass, and in the SCS of 1.68+/-0.35 ml 100 g(-1) body mass (mean +/- S.D.) or approximately 50% that of the PCS. Flow rates to the SCS were calculated as 2.7% of the resting cardiac output. There was an allometric relationship between body mass and blood volumes. Increasing condition factor showed a tendency towards smaller blood volumes of the PCS, expressed as percentage body mass, but this was not evident for the volume of the SCS.

Cork processing involves a boiling step to make the cork softer, which consumes a high volume of water and generates a wastewater with a high organic content, rich in tannins. An assessment of the final wastewater characteristics and of the boiling water composition along the boiling process was performed. The parameters studied were pH, color, total organic carbon (TOC), chemical and biochemical oxygen demands (COD, BOD5, BOD20), total suspended solids (TSS), total phenols and tannins (TP, TT). It was observed that the water solutes extraction power is significantly reduced for higher quantities of cork processed. Valid relationships between parameters were established not only envisaging wastewater characterization but also to provide an important tool for wastewater monitoring and for process control/optimization. Boiling water biodegradability presented decreasing values with the increase of cork processed and for the final wastewater its value is always lower than 0.5, indicating that these wastewaters are very difficult to treat by biological processes. The biodegradability was associated with the increase of tannin content that can rise up to 0.7 g/L. These compounds can be used by other industries when concentrated and the clarified wastewater can be reused, which is a potential asset in this wastewater treatment.

Anisakiasis and Pseudoterranovosis are human diseases caused by the ingestion of live Anisakidae larvae in raw, undercooked or lightly marinated fish. Larvae were collected from one salted cod sold for human consumption in a Sao Paulo market in 2013. One section of one brownish larva was used for molecular analyses. The partial COX2 gene sequence from the larva had a nucleotide identity of 99.8 % with Pseudoterranova azarasi, which belongs to the Pseudoterranova decipiens species complex. The risk of allergy when consuming dead larvae in salted fish is not well known and should be considered.
