The aim of this study was to evaluate the incorporation of hydrophobic plasticizers (acetyltributyl citrate - ATB, tributyl citrate - TB and acetyltriethyl citrate - ATC) in a matrix of gelatin, using the saponin extracted from Yucca schidigera (yucca) as emulsifier, in the production of biodegradable emulsified films using the casting technique. High levels of hydrophobic plasticizers were incorporated, reaching up to 75% of plasticizer in relation to the protein (w/w) for ATB and TB, and up to 60% for ATC. The minimum values of water vapor permeability were 0.08, 0.07 and 0.06 g mm m(-2) h(-1) kPa(-1) for ATB, TB and ATC respectively, with no significant differences (p > 0.05). The water solubility of the films ranged from 21% to 59.5%. Although the WVP decreased, both scanning electron microscopy and laser scanning confocal microscopy indicated that the incorporation of the hydrophobic plasticizers did not occur homogeneously in the film matrix. The aim of this study was the production and characterization of gelatin-based films using hydrophobic plasticizers derived from citric acid and soy lecithin as emulsifier. The films were characterized as to their mechanic properties, permeability to water vapor, opacity, morphology and possible interactions using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Tensile strength values (TS) varied from 36 to 103 MPa, how-ever, the increase in the concentration of plasticizers (acetyltributyl citrate and tributyl citrate) reduced TS by 57% and no relation was observed between plasticizer quantities and the elongation in the quantities tested. Permeability to water vapor varied between 0.17 and 0.34 (g mm/m(2) h kPa), slightly increasing with the increase in concentration of plasticizers. The effectiveness in the use of soy lecithin emulsifier in the homogenization between the compounds could be proven by microscopic observation using confocal laser microscopy. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Visible light can drive esteri fi cation from aldehydes and alcohols using supported gold nanoparticles (Au/Al 2 O 3 ) as photo- catalysts at ambient temperatures. The gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) absorb visible light due to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) e ff ect, and the conduction electrons of the AuNPs gain the energy of the incident light. The energetic electrons, which concentrate at the NP surface, facilitate the activation of a range of aldehyde and alcohol substrates. The photocatalytic e ffi ciencies strongly depend on the Au loading, particle sizes of the AuNPs, irradiance, and wavelength of the light irradiation. Finally, a plausible reaction mechanism was proposed, and the Au/Al 2 O 3 catalysts can be reused several times without signi fi cantly losing activity. The knowledge acquired in this study may inspire further studies in new e ffi cient recyclable photocatalysts and a wide range of organic synthesis driven by sunlight.

This is the first comprehensive report on the calculation of segment size, which signifies the asic unit of flow in long chain plasticizing liquids, by a novel multi-pronged approach. Unlike, low molecular weight liquids and high polymer melts these complex long chain liquids encompasses the least understood domain of the liquid state. In the present work the flow behaviour of carboxylate ester (300-900 Da) has been explained through segmental motion taking into account the independence of molecular weight region. The segment size have been calculated by various methods based on satistical thermodynamics, molecular dynamics and group additivity nd their merits analysed.

It is shown that prop-2-ynyl esters are useful protecting groups for carboxylic acids and that they are selectively deprotected in the presence of other esters on treatment with tetrathiomolybdate under mild conditions.

Selective oxidation of aliphatic alcohols under mild and base-free conditions is a challenging process for organic synthesis. Herein, we report a one-pot process for the direct oxidative esterification of aliphatic alcohols that is significantly enhanced by visible-light irradiation at ambient temperatures. The new methodology uses heterogenerous photocatalysts of gold–palladium alloy nanoparticles on a phosphate-modified hydrotalcite support and molecular oxygen as a benign oxidant. The alloy photocatalysts can absorb incident light, and the light-excited metal electrons on the surface of metal nanoparticles can activate the adsorbed reactant molecules. Tuning the light intensity and wavelength of the irradiation can remarkably change the reaction activity. Shorter wavelength light (<550 nm) drives the reaction more efficiently than light of longer wavelength (e.g., 620 nm), especially at low temperatures. The phosphate-exchanged hydrotalcite support provides sufficient basicity (and buffer) for the catalytic reactions; thus, the addition of base is not required. The photocatalysts are efficient and readily recyclable. The findings reveal the first example of using “green” oxidants and light energy to drive direct oxidative esterification of aliphatic alcohols under base-free, mild conditions.

Examination of the symmetric Hantzsch 1,4-dihydropyridine ester derivatives of the prototypical nifedipine molecule indicates the tendency of this class of molecule to form a common packing motif. Crystal structure analysis of 2,6-dimethyl-1,4-dihydropyridine-3,5-dicarboxylic diesters and analogs reveals that they form extended chains, characterized as the C(6) packing motif, via intermolecular (amine) N-H...O=C (C3,C5 carbonyl) hydrogen bonds. In addition, all the prepared derivatives also satisfy the basic structural requirements for their high binding efficiency to the receptor. The reproducible C(6) packing motif observed among these compounds has a use in the design of solid-state materials.

Investigation of Pimelea elongata ("Lakebed Pimelea") afforded 18 tigliane- and daphnane-type diterpenes (1-18). Eight of these were new compounds: four (1-3, 5) tigliane esters and four (7, 8, 10, 11) daphnane orthoesters. The 10 known compounds were 12-O-decanoylphorbol-13-acetate (4), P. simplex subtoxin B (6), wikstroelide E (9), pimelotides A and B (12, 13), gnidiglaucin (14), simplexin (15), huratoxin (16), kirkinine D (17), and 12-beta-acetoxyhuratoxin (18). The structures and relative configurations of the new compounds were determined by ID and 2D NMR spectroscopic studies in combination with MS analyses.

The relationship between the structure and flammability of a number of polyphosphate esters has been examined. The conventional correlation of char residue with limiting oxygen index was found to be unproductive in these polymers, giving insight into the importance of gas-phase reactions in addition to condensed-phase reactions in determining their flammability. A novel approach was sought in understanding the structure-flammability relationships of these polymers relating thermal stability, phosphorus content and limiting oxygen index. An empirical relationship has been derived amongst these three parameters.

Reverse cholesterol transport (RCT) is an important function of high-density lipoproteins (HDL) in the protection of atherosclerosis. RCT is the process by which HDL stimulates cholesterol removal from peripheral cells and transports it to the liver for excretion. Premenopausal women have a reduced risk for atherosclerosis compared to age-matched men and there exists a positive correlation for serum 17β-estradiol (E2) and HDL levels in premenopausal women supporting the role of E2 in atherosclerosis prevention. In premenopausal women, E2 associates with HDL as E2 fatty acyl esters. Discovery of the cellular targets, metabolism, and assessment of the macrophage cholesterol efflux potential of these HDL-associated E2 fatty acyl esters were the major objectives of this thesis (study I, III, and IV). Soy phytoestrogens, which are related to E2 in both structure and function, have been proposed to be protective against atherosclerosis but the evidence to support these claims is conflicting. Therefore, another objective of this thesis was to assess the ability of serum from postmenopausal women, treated with isoflavone supplements (compared to placebo), to promote macrophage cholesterol efflux (study II). The scope of this thesis was to cover the roles that HDL-associated E2 fatty acyl esters have in the cellular aspects of RCT and to determine if soy isoflavones can also influence RCT mechanisms. SR-BI was a pivotal cellular receptor, responsible for hepatic and macrophage uptake and macrophage cholesterol efflux potential of HDL-associated E2 fatty acyl esters. Functional SR-BI was also critical for proper LCAT esterification activity which could impact HDL-associated E2 fatty acyl ester assembly and its function. In hepatic cells, LDL receptors also contributed to HDL-associated E2 fatty acyl esters uptake and in macrophage cells, estrogen receptors (ERs) were necessary for both HDL-associated E2 ester-specific uptake and cholesterol efflux potential. HDL-containing E2 fatty acyl esters (E2-FAE) stimulated enhanced cholesterol efflux compared to male HDL (which are deficient in E2) demonstrating the importance of the E2 ester in this process. To support this, premenopausal female HDL, which naturally contains E2, showed greater macrophage cholesterol efflux compared to males. Additionally, hepatic and macrophage cells hydrolyzed the HDL-associated E2 fatty acyl ester into unesterified E2. This could have important biological ramifications because E2, not the esterified form, has potent cellular effects which may influence RCT mechanisms. Lastly, soy isoflavone supplementation in postmenopausal women did not modulate ABCA1-specific macrophage cholesterol efflux but did increase production of plasma pre-β HDL levels, a subclass of HDL. Therefore, the impact of isoflavones on RCT and cardiovascular health needs to be further investigated. Taken as a whole, HDL-associated E2 fatty acyl esters from premenopausal women and soy phytoestrogen treatment in postmenopausal women may be important factors that increase the efficiency of RCT through cellular lipoprotein-related processes and may have direct implications on the cardiovascular health of women.
