The readout procedure of charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras is known to generate some image degradation in different scientific imaging fields, especially in astrophysics. In the particular field of particle image velocimetry (PIV), widely extended in the scientific community, the readout procedure of the interline CCD sensor induces a bias in the registered position of particle images. This work proposes simple procedures to predict the magnitude of the associated measurement error. Generally, there are differences in the position bias for the different images of a certain particle at each PIV frame. This leads to a substantial bias error in the PIV velocity measurement (~0.1 pixels). This is the order of magnitude that other typical PIV errors such as peak-locking may reach. Based on modern CCD technology and architecture, this work offers a description of the readout phenomenon and proposes a modeling for the CCD readout bias error magnitude. This bias, in turn, generates a velocity measurement bias error when there is an illumination difference between two successive PIV exposures. The model predictions match the experiments performed with two 12-bit-depth interline CCD cameras (MegaPlus ES 4.0/E incorporating the Kodak KAI-4000M CCD sensor with 4 megapixels). For different cameras, only two constant values are needed to fit the proposed calibration model and predict the error from the readout procedure. Tests by different researchers using different cameras would allow verification of the model, that can be used to optimize acquisition setups. Simple procedures to obtain these two calibration values are also described.

Forest cover of the Maringá municipality, located in northern Parana State, was mapped in this study. Mapping was carried out by using high-resolution HRC sensor imagery and medium resolution CCD sensor imagery from the CBERS satellite. Images were georeferenced and forest vegetation patches (TOFs - trees outside forests) were classified using two methods of digital classification: reflectance-based or the digital number of each pixel, and object-oriented. The areas of each polygon were calculated, which allowed each polygon to be segregated into size classes. Thematic maps were built from the resulting polygon size classes and summary statistics generated from each size class for each area. It was found that most forest fragments in Maringá were smaller than 500 m². There was also a difference of 58.44% in the amount of vegetation between the high-resolution imagery and medium resolution imagery due to the distinct spatial resolution of the sensors. It was concluded that high-resolution geotechnology is essential to provide reliable information on urban greens and forest cover under highly human-perturbed landscapes.

The aim of this work is to discriminate vegetation classes throught remote sensing images from the satellite CBERS-2, related to winter and summer seasons in the Campos Gerais region Paraná State, Brazil. The vegetation cover of the region presents different kinds of vegetations: summer and winter cultures, reforestation areas, natural areas and pasture. Supervised classification techniques like Maximum Likelihood Classifier (MLC) and Decision Tree were evaluated, considering a set of attributes from images, composed by bands of the CCD sensor (1, 2, 3, 4), vegetation indices (CTVI, DVI, GEMI, NDVI, SR, SAVI, TVI), mixture models (soil, shadow, vegetation) and the two first main components. The evaluation of the classifications accuracy was made using the classification error matrix and the kappa coefficient. It was defined a high discriminatory level during the classes definition, in order to allow separation of different kinds of winter and summer crops. The classification accuracy by decision tree was 94.5% and the kappa coefficient was 0.9389 for the scene 157/128. For the scene 158/127, the values were 88% and 0.8667, respectively. The classification accuracy by MLC was 84.86% and the kappa coefficient was 0.8099 for the scene 157/128. For the scene 158/127, the values were 77.90% and 0.7476, respectively. The results showed a better performance of the Decision Tree classifier than MLC, especially to the classes related to cultivated crops, indicating the use of the Decision Tree classifier to the vegetation cover mapping including different kinds of crops.

SUMMARY. This Master Final Project develops a Labview application designed to perform the automatic acquisition of solar cell electroluminescence maps in general, and concentrator multijunction solar cells as a special case, under forward biased conditions. This system allows the acquisition of electroluminescence maps of each of the sub-cells in a multijunction cell. The spatial variations in the intensity of the electroluminescence measured can be analyzed and correlated with defects in the semiconductor structure or in the metal contacts of the solar cell. In the theory section of this memory, the state of the art of the electroluminescence-based characterization techniques for solar cells is presented, and the previous work carried out at I.E.S. is summarized. For the development of the practice part it has been necessary to design two drivers using Labview software. The first driver handles the source-meter injecting current in the solar cell and measuring voltage between its terminals. The second driver is used to handle and automate the acquisition of the solar cell electroluminescence image under forward biased conditions, using a CCD sensor. These drivers are included in the final application, which offers the user an interface to apply different bias conditions to the solar cell and for the acquisition of electroluminescence maps. The use of this system is essential in the studies of degradation of solar cells which is currently underway at the I.E.S. – U.P.M. In this Master Final Project the results of the first measurements are carried out which are presented in the final part of this memory.

Este tipo de medição poderá ter um papel importante na investigação e desenvolvimento na área da energia solar e aplicações; Radiometric Calibration of Spectrophotometric Optical Instrumentation Abstract: Spectrometers installed aboard satellites and located on Earth’s surface have played a fundamental role to understand atmosphere’s chemistry and dynamic and to monitor environmental pollution. We present, for the first time to our knowledge, experimental evidence showing that superimposed blazed fiber Bragg gratings may be fabricated and used to extend the dynamic range of a grating-based spectrometer. Blazed gratings of 4° and 8° were superimposed in germanosilicate fiber by ultraviolet inscription and used in conjunction with a coated charged-coupled device array to interrogate a wavelength-division-multiplexing sensor array. We show that the system can be used to monitor strain and temperature sensors simultaneously with an employable bandwidth which is extendable to 70 nm.
