In this paper the performances of different cutting fluids and grinding wheel types were analysed in the grinding of SAE HVN-3 workpieces. The resulting residual stress, wheel wear and roughness were evaluated. The influence of the cutting fluid jet velocity v(j) was also analysed. As a conclusion, the lubrication ability seems to be the governing factor in the cutting fluid performance. The use of CBN wheels can significantly reduce the thermal damage in grinding, leading to compressive residual stresses. The CBN wheel and the cutting oil give an optimum combination for performing this grinding operation.

Nickel-based super alloys are used in a variety of applications in which high-temperature strength and resistance to creep, corrosion, and oxidation are required, such as in aircraft gas turbines, combustion chambers, and automotive engine valves. The properties that make these materials suitable for these applications also make them difficult to grind. Grinding systems for such materials are often built around vitrified cBN (cubic boron nitride) wheels to realize maximum productivity and minimum cost per part. Conditions that yield the most economical combination of stock removal rate and wheel wear are key to the successful implementation of the grinding system. Identifying the transition point for excessive wheel wear is important. The aim of this study is to compare the performance of different cBN wheels when grinding difficult-to-grind (DTG) materials by determining the 'wheel wear characteristic curve', which correlates the G-ratio to the calculated tangential force per abrasive grain. With the proposed methodology, a threshold force per grit above which the wheel wear rate increases rapidly can be quickly identified. A comparison of performance for two abrasive product formulations in the grinding of three materials is presented. The obtained results can be applied for the development of grinding applications for DTG materials.

This keynote paper aims at analyzing relevant industrial demands for grinding research. The chosen focus is to understand what are the main research challenges in the extensive industrial use of the process. Since the automotive applications are the most important driving forces for grinding development, the paper starts with an analysis on the main trends in more efficient engines and the changes in their components that will affect the grinding performance. A view from 23 machine tool builders is also presented based on a survey made in interviews and during the EMO and IMTS machine tool shows. Case studies received by the STC G members were used to show how research centers and industries are collaborating. A view from the authors and the final conclusions show hot topics for future grinding research. (C) 2009 CIRP.

The work reported here involved an investigation into the grinding process, one of the last finishing processes carried out on a production line. Although several input parameters are involved in this process, attention today focuses strongly on the form and amount of cutting fluid employed, since these substances may be seriously pernicious to human health and to the environment, and involve high purchasing and maintenance costs when utilized and stored incorrectly. The type and amount of cutting fluid used directly affect some of the main output variables of the grinding process which are analyzed here, such as tangential cutting force, specific grinding energy, acoustic emission, diametrical wear, roughness, residual stress and scanning electron microscopy. To analyze the influence of these variables, an optimised fluid application methodology was developed (involving rounded 5, 4 and 3 turn diameter nozzles and high fluid application pressures) to reduce the amount of fluid used in the grinding process and improve its performance in comparison with the conventional fluid application method (of diffuser nozzles and lower fluid application pressure). To this end, two types of cutting fluid (a 5% synthetic emulsion and neat oil) and two abrasive tools (an aluminium oxide and a superabrasive CBN grinding wheel) were used. The results revealed that, in every situation, the optimised application of cutting fluid significantly improved the efficiency of the process, particularly the combined use of neat oil and CBN grinding wheel. A study was undertaken to investigate the effects of the EP additives during tribological tests using a CBN tool against steel. Ester oil with and without sulfur additive were used as lubricants in a tribometer. Tribochemical interactions between the S additive and steel have been investigated under boundary lubrication conditions by SEM and EDX analysis. The relative abundance of different elements on the surface of the CBN tools, which are present in the workpiece material such as Fe (iron) and Cr (chromium), suggests that adhesion occurred when the ester oil without sulfur additive was tested. Tribochemical interactions between the additive and the steel could be observed when using the ester oil containing the sulfur additive. These interactions contribute to the formation of a uniform layer on the CBN tool. This layer is composed by S (sulfur), Fe, and O (oxygen). The presence of these elements indicate that FeO (iron oxide) and FeS (iron sulfide) were formed.

A loose abrasive lapping technology was developed for truing and dressing ultrafine diamond cup wheels for grinding spherical end faces of fibre optic connectors. The relative densities of exposed grits and grit pull-outs measured from wheel surfaces prepared using the loose abrasive lapping and the bonded abrasive dressing were compared. It was found that the lapping method with loose abrasives produced wheel surfaces with more exposed grits and less grit pull-outs, especially for finer grit size wheels. For dressing ultrafine grit size wheels, the particle size of the lapping paste should be smaller than the wheel grit size to achieve a better result. It is also found that the wheels dressed using the lapping method demonstrate an excellent grinding performance. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

This report provides, for the first time, a snapshot of the meals-on-wheels service in Ireland and gives a unique insight into client and provider perceptions of the service. The research findings underline the dual importance of the service for clients, who noted that it is a vital source of both nutritious meals and social contact and connectivity to the wider community. From a supply side perspective, the research findings point to the wide organisational diversity that exists within the service and the critical role that volunteers play, as well as highlighting difficulties that many services currently experience.

The seeding process was the operation that suffered the most changes in no-tillage system due the cover crop soil and new particle soil arrangement. The objective of this study was to verify the effects of loads applied to the wheels and adjustments of sowing depth on seedling emergence of corn in no-tillage system. The experimental design was completely randomized with a factorial arrangement 5x4, with five loads applied to the wheels and four theoretical sowing depth adjustments. The real sowing depth increased in the lower theoretical depth and decreased in the higher theoretical depth, due to the compaction loads. Regarding the time of emergence, loads applied had not influence at the greater depths. Emergence time decreased with the load increase in the lower depths. Thus, the adjustment of the compactor wheels can influence in the corn seeding process.
