Notable compositional changes of organic matter are observed below the silica transition zone in thermally immature sediments. The increase of bitumen ratio, and hopane and sterane isomerization parameters indicate an acceleration of the kinetics of the chemical reactions which transform the organic matter. This phenomenon is probably due to the numerous mineral and textural changes induced by the transformation of amorphous biogenic silica into crystalline authigenic silica.

The organic geochemical character of rocks selected from Aptian, Valanginian, and Berriasian clay stone and siltstone sequences encountered in Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Holes 762C and 763C on the Exmouth Plateau was determined by means of a variety of analytical procedures. These sequences represent distal portions of the Mesozoic Barrow delta, in which petroleum source rocks and reservoirs exist on the Australian continent. The organic matter at the ODP sites is thermally immature type III material. Biomarker hydrocarbon compositions are dominated by long-chain, waxy n-alkanes and by C29 steranes, which reflect the land-plant origin of organic matter. Organic carbon d13C values ranged from -26 per mil to -28 per mil, consistent with a C3 land-plant source. Kerogen pyrolysate compositions and hopane isomerization ratios revealed progressively larger contributions of recycled organic matter as the depth of the deltaic sedimentary layers became greater.

There are controversies regarding the origin of Heinrich layer 3 (H3), the massive ice-rafting and meltwater event in the North Atlantic during the last glacial cycle spanning a time window between 29 and 30 kyr B.P. Some argue in favor of a Laurentide Ice Sheet source similar to other Heinrich layers, while a contending view argues for the European ice sheet source. Existing geochemical proxies such as 40Ar/39Ar, 206Pb/204Pb, or epsilon-Nd, etc., could not be used to distinguish among various sources of ice-rafted debris in H3 because of their low abundances, suggesting a background glacial sediment signal. In order to circumvent this problem a biomarker-based approach is used to characterize the provenance of H layers 2, 3, and 4 and other non-Heinrich layers. The presence of hopanes and steranes and their aromatic counterparts in the H layers is incompatible with Recent sediments and is attributed to the transportation of organic matter because of the glacial erosion of source rocks. The most diagnostic and useful signatures of this ancient organic matter in the H layers are the dominance of C34 hopanoids over C33 and the occurrence of isorenieratane along with palaerenieratane. Biomarkers signatures in H layers 2 and 3 of the Labrador Sea suggest no difference in their source. Hydrocarbon distributions suggest that these sediments were derived from the Middle to Late Ordovician and Silurian source rocks of the Hudson Bay of eastern Canada. Biomarker data of the H layer 4 from the northwest Atlantic reveal that the sediments of this layer have a similar source to the H layers in the Labrador Sea.
Triterpane and sterane biomarkers in the YA13-1 condensates from Qiongdongnan Basin, South China Sea
Resumo:
Triterpanes and steranes in condensates from the YA13-1 gas field, Qiongdongnan Basin, were monitored. The YA13-1 condensates have unusual biomarker distributions dominated by terpanes and steranes derived from higher plants. Anomalously abundant 1 got-oleanane and remarkably abundant bicadinanes are present in the YA13-1 condensates, whereas the 17alpha-hopane contents are extremely low. Taraxastane and significantly abundant 17alpha-diahopanes occur in the condensates. In addition, a number of unknown C-29 and C-30 pentacyclic triterpanes including previously unreported compounds were detected in the condensates, some of which are significantly abundant. The unknown compounds may be terrestrial biomarkers. C-29 homologues are relatively predominant among the regular and rearranged steranes. The diasterane concentrations are markedly higher than those of regular steranes. The maturity of the YA13-1 condensates is relatively high, at the peak to late oil generation stage (corresponding to 0.85-1.10% Ro), based on sterane and terpane and including bicadinane maturity parameters (i.e. T/(T-1 + R) and 2T/R bicadinane ratios). The above maturity assessment result is different from that based on diamondoid maturity parameters (%Ro = 1.60-1.70) [Org. Geochem. 25 (1996) 179], which can be explained by a contribution of hydrocarbons from two sources at different depths. The YA13-1 condensates were probably generated from the Yacheng and Lingshui coal-bearing source rocks buried both in the Qiongdongnan Basin (3400-5000 m) and in the Yinggehai Basin (>5000 m). The possible contribution of lower maturity hydrocarbons from the Yacheng and Lingshui Formations (3400-4100 m) in the Qiongdongnan Basin to the YA13-1 gases and condensates should not be neglected. The average total organic carbon (TOC) content obtained after Rock-Eval/TOC analysis of 156 sediment samples from the eight sites cored during Leg 135 is 0.05%. Hence, the TOC content of Leg 135 sediments is extremely low. The organic matter that is present in these samples is probably mostly reworked and oxidized material. Ten sediment samples were selected for extraction and analysis by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Very low amounts of extractable hydrocarbons were obtained and some aspects of the biomarker distributions suggest that these hydrocarbons are not representative of the organic matter indigenous to the samples. A sample of an oil seep from Pili, Tongatapu was also analyzed. The seep is a biodegraded, mature oil that shows many characteristics in common with previously published analyses of oil seeps from Tongatapu. Biomarker evidence indicates that its source is a mature, marine carbonate of probable Late Cretaceous-Early Tertiary age. The source rock responsible for the Tongatapu oil seeps remains unknown.

This study investigates organic-rich sedimentary sequences deposited during the early Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE1a) at Sites 1207 and 1213 on Shatsky Rise (ODP Leg 198) in the west-central Pacific. Biomarker analyses provide evidence of the algal and bacterial origin of organic matter (OM) in these sediments where the abundance of steroidal components, particularly sterenes and sterones, suggests that the OM includes major contributions from eukaryotic sources in an environment characterized by high phytoplankton productivity. The presence of alkenones at Site 1213B is diagnostic of OM derived from representatives of haptophyte algae among the calcareous nannoplankton and their d13C values (average -31.6 per mil) are consistent with those expected during elevated pCO2. The occurrence and prominence of 2b-methylhopanes and 2b-methylhopanones indicates significant contributions to the OM from cyanobacteria, which are also likely contributors of hopanoids based on their d13C compositions. These biomarker data suggest that oceanic conditions, perhaps nitrate- or iron-limited, were conducive to cyanobacteria production during OAE1a, which appears to distinguish this event from other Cretaceous OAE.

Wastewater containing human sewage is often discharged with little or no treatment into the Antarctic marine environment. Faecal sterols (primarily coprostanol) in sediments have been used for assessment of human sewage contamination in this environment, but in situ production and indigenous faunal inputs can confound such determinations. Using gas chromatography with mass spectral detection profiles of both C27 and C29 sterols, potential sources of faecal sterols were examined in nearshore marine sediments, encompassing sites proximal and distal to the wastewater outfall at Davis Station. Faeces from indigenous seals and penguins were also examined. Faeces from several indigenous species contained significant quantities of coprostanol but not 24-ethylcoprostanol, which is present in human faeces. In situ coprostanol and 24-ethylcoprostanol production was identified by co-production of their respective epi isomers at sites remote from the wastewat er source and in high total organic matter sediments. A C 29 sterols-based polyphasic likelihood assessment matrix for human sewage contamination is presented, which distinguishes human from local fauna faecal inputs and in situ production in the Antarctic environment. Sewage contamination was detected up to 1.5 km from Davis Station.

We determined the quantity and chemical composition of cuticular hydrocarbons of different strains, sex and age of buffalo flies, Haematobia exigua. The quantity of cuticular hydrocarbons increased from less than 1 µg/fly for newly-emerged flies to over 11 µg/fly in 13 d-old flies. The hydrocarbon chain length varied from C21 to C29, with unbranched alkanes and monounsaturated alkenes the major components. Newly emerged flies produced almost exclusively C27 hydrocarbons. Increasing age was accompanied by the appearance of hydrocarbons with shorter carbon chains and an increase in the proportion of alkenes. 11 Tricosene and 7-tricosene were the most abundant hydrocarbons in mature buffalo flies. Cuticular hydrocarbons of buffalo flies are distinctly different from those of horn flies. The most noticeable differences were in the C23 alkenes, with the major isomers 11- and 7-tricosene in buffalo flies and (Z)-9- and (Z)-5-tricosene in horn flies, respectively. Cuticular hydrocarbon analysis provides a reliable method to differentiate buffalo and horn fly, which are difficult to separate morphologically. The differences in cuticular hydrocarbons also support their recognition as separate species, H. exigua and H. irritans, rather than as subspecies.
