A. suite of 10 different marine evaporitic oil samples from Sergipe-Alagoas Basin, Brazil was studied for its biomarker content, in particular its acidic constituents. The oils showed different molecular distributions and relative abundances of n-alkanoic, isoprenoid and hopanoic acids. The observed differences were assigned to the incorporation of immature organic matter in the oils and fractionation along the migration pathway. The diagenetic precursor functionality (alcohol/ether or acid) was proposed based on the comparison of the relative abundances of the neutral and acidic biomarkers (hopanoids, isoprenoids, alkyl-steranes, monoaromatic alkyl-steroids). In the acidic fraction, 3 series of steroid-alkanoic acids and monoaromatic steroid-alkanoic acids (steroid-methanoic, ethanoic and propanoic acids and monoaromatic steroid-methanoic, ethanoic and propanoic acids) were detected, while in the neutral fraction only 2 series of each corresponding class could be observed (methyl and ethyl-steranes and monoaromatic methyl and ethyl-steroids). These carbon shifts suggest that decarboxylation is an important process in the formation of the alkyrsteranes and monoaromatic alkyl-steroids, and we infer that carboxylic acids are the diagenetic precursors of these classes of compounds. When alcohol or ether are the diagenetic precursors (isoprenoids and hopanoids), no significant differences in the molecular distributions between neutral and acidic fractions were observed. The enantiodivergent formal syntheses of both enantiomers of aspercyclide C is accomplished. Starting from L-(+)-tartaric acid, the key protected allylic alcohol, (3R,4R)-4-(methoxy-methoxy) non-1-en-3-ol is prepared, and is then elaborated into both enantiomers of 3-(4-methoxybenzyl)oxy]non-1-en-4-ol via Mitsunobu inversion. Esterification with a known biaryl acid, followed by ring-closing metathesis and deprotection completes the syntheses.

In this experiment, the feeding of Indian white shrimp larvae by unenriched rotifers (treatment 1) and enriched with highly unsaturated fatty acid (treatment 2) and highly unsaturated fatty acid along with vitamin C (treatment 3) on the growth factors, survival and resistance against salinity and formalin stress tests were studied and their differences with control treatment including newly hatched Artemia nauplii is compared. In this the study four treatments in a completely randomized design with 3 replicates per treatment were used. Farming of shrimp larvae of Zoea II to postlarvae 5 was done in 20 liter plastic bucket. Present results indicated that growth factors and survival rate of stage Zoea II to postlarvae 1 in treatments 1, 2 and 3 improve rather than control in which this case was due to optimal size rotifer rather than Artemia nauplii. Also, treatments 2 and 3 feeding with oil liver cod emulsion enriched rotifer have the highest concentration of DHA (mg/g DW) and the ratio DHA/EPA in which due to have shown the highest growth factors and a significant difference (P<0.05) with treatments 1 and control. The highest survival at stage PL1 were observed in treatment 3 that was enriched with ascorbyl palmitate in which have to the synergistic properties of vitamin C rather than treatments 2, 1 and control and showed a significant difference (P<0.05). But in stage PL5 the highest amount of growth and survival rates were related to control treatment which showed a significant difference (P<0.05) with other treatments that control has higher size rather than treatments 1, 2 and 3. Also, among experiment treatments that the two treatments 2 and 3 due to enrichment had higher growth and survival rates compared with treatment 1 in which their differences have also been significant (P<0.05). In the case of stress tests, results indicated that the highest survival rate has been reported when specimens were offered a diet containing high levels of highly unsaturated fatty acids with vitamin C. So that in stage PL1 in the salinity stress tests 10 and 20 ppt the highest survival rate was observed in treatment 3. As for the second, treatment 2 showed a significant difference (P<0.05) with treatment 3. It is worth mentioning that treatment 3 showed a higher survival rate compared to treatment 2 due to the synergistic properties of vitamin C. The difference between these two treatments with treatment 1 and control was also significant. No significant difference was observed in formalin stress test 100 ppm in this stage between treatments 3 and 2 which shows the highest survival rate. But their difference with treatments 1 and control was significant (P<0.05). Also, in stage PL5 in the salinity stress tests 10 and 20 ppt the highest survival rate was observed in treatment 3 which showed no significant difference (P<0.05) with control treatment. While their difference in the amount of survival rate with treatment 1 and 2 was significant (P<0.05). In this stage, the highest observed survival rate in formalin stress test 100 ppm included treatments control, 3 and 2 among which there were no significant differences (P<0.05). While the difference between these three treatments with treatment 1 was significant.

A novel colloid method using (WO3)(n)center dot xH(2)O as colloidal source was developed to prepare Pd/C catalyst for formic acid oxidation. Transmission electron microscopy image shows that the Pd/C nanoparticles have an average size of 3.3 nm and a narrow size distribution. Electrochemical measurements indicate that the Pd/C catalyst exhibits significantly high electrochemical active surface area and high catalytic activity with good stability for formic acid oxidation compared with that prepared by common method.

The effect of increased dietary intakes of alpha-linolenic acid (ALNA) or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) for 2 months upon plasma lipid composition and capacity for conversion of ALNA to longer-chain metabolites was investigated in healthy men (52 (SD 12) years). After a 4-week baseline period when the subjects substituted a control spread, a test meal containing [U-C-13]ALNA (700 mg) was consumed to measure conversion to EPA, docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) and DHA over 48 h. Subjects were then randomised to one of three groups for 8 weeks before repeating the tracer study: (1) continued on same intake (control, n 5); (2) increased ALNA intake (10 g/d, n 4); (3) increased EPA+DHA intake (1.5 g/d, n 5). At baseline, apparent fractional conversion of labelled ALNA was: EPA 2.80, DPA 1.20 and DRA 0.04%. After 8 weeks on the control diet, plasma lipid composition and [C-13]ALNA conversion remained unchanged compared with baseline. The high-ALNA diet resulted in raised plasma triacylglycerol-EPA and -DPA concentrations and phosphatidylcholine-EPA concentration, whilst [C-13]ALNA conversion was similar to baseline. The high-(EPA+DHA) diet raised plasma phosphatidylcholine-EPA and -DHA concentrations, decreased [C-13]ALNA conversion to EPA (2-fold) and DPA (4-fold), whilst [C-13]ALNA conversion to DHA was unchanged. The dietary interventions did not alter partitioning of ALNA towards beta-oxidation. The present results indicate ALNA conversion was down-regulated by increased product (EPA+DHA) availability, but was not up-regulated by increased substrate (ALNA) consumption. This suggests regulation of ALNA conversion may limit the influence of variations in dietary n-3 fatty acid intake on plasma lipid compositions.

Eight otherwise healthy diabetic volunteers took a daily antioxidant supplement consisting of vitamin E (200 IU), vitamin C (250 mg) and α-lipoic acid (90 mg) for a period of 6 weeks. Diabetic dapsone hydroxylamine-mediated methaemoglobin formation and resistance to erythrocytic thiol depletion was compared with age and sex-matched non-diabetic subjects. At time zero, methaemoglobin formation in the non-diabetic subjects was greater at all four time points compared with that of the diabetic subjects. Resistance to glutathione depletion was initially greater in non-diabetic compared with diabetic samples. Half-way through the study (3 weeks), there were no differences between the two groups in methaemoglobin formation and thiol depletion in the diabetic samples was now lower than the non-diabetic samples at 10 and 20 min. At 6 weeks, diabetic erythrocytic thiol levels remained greater than those of non-diabetics. HbA1c values were significantly reduced in the diabetic subjects at 6 weeks compared with time zero values. At 10 weeks, 4 weeks after the end of supplementation, the diabetic HbA1c values significantly increased to the point where they were not significantly different from the time zero values. Total antioxidant status measurement (TAS) indicated that diabetic plasma antioxidant capacity was significantly improved during antioxidant supplementation. Conversion of α-lipoic acid to dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA) in vivo led to potent interference in a standard fructosamine assay kit, negating its use in this study. This report suggests that triple antioxidant therapy in diabetic volunteers attenuates the in vitro experimental oxidative stress of methaemoglobin formation and reduces haemoglobin glycation in vivo. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Pesticide monitoring in St. Lucie County by various local, state and federal agencies has indicated consistent residues of several pesticides, including ethion and bromacil. Although pesticides have long been known to pose a threat to non-target species and much background monitoring has been done, no pesticide aquatic risk assessment has been done in this geographical area. Several recognized United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) methods of quantifying risk are employed here to include hazard quotients (HQ) and probabilistic modeling with sensitivity analysis. These methods are employed to characterize potential impacts to aquatic biota of the C-25 Canal and the Indian River Lagoon (in St. Lucie County, Florida) based on current agricultural pesticide use and drainage patterns. The model used in the analysis incorporates available physical-chemical property data, local hydrology, ecosystem information, and pesticide use practices. HQ's, probabilistic distributions, and field sample analyses resulted in high levels of concern (LOCs), which usually indicates a need for regulatory action, including restrictions on use, or cancellation. ^

L-Serine-L-ascorbic acid, C3HTNOa. C6HsO6, a 1:1 complex between the amino acid serine and the vitamin ascorbic acid, crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P2~2~2~ with four formula units in a cell of dimensions a = 5.335(3), b = 8.769(2), c = 25.782 (5) A. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by full-matrix least squares to an R of 0.036 for 951 observed reflections. Both molecules are neutral in the structure. The conformation of the serine molecule is different from that observed in the crystal structures of L-serine, DL-serine and L-serine monohydrate. The enediol group in the ascorbic acid molecule is planar, whereas significant departures from planarity are observed in the lactone group. The conformation of this molecule is similar to that observed in arginine ascorbate. The unlike molecules aggregate into separate columns in the crystal structure. The columns are held together by hydrogen bonds. Among these, a pair of hydrogen bonds between the enediol group of ascorbic acid and the carboxylate group of serine provides a possible model for a specific interaction between ascorbic acid and a carboxylate ion.
