At the centre of this study lies the question if normative gender thinking affects the way poetry gets reviewed and how the reviews are written, this in relation to both the gender of the reviewer and the poet. The study crosses three academic fields; gender studies, poetry and journalism, and is based on the cultural studies theory of media affecting and even creating the world around it. The study is based on two types of analysis. One quantitative analysis based on the thematic criticism theory about detail studies that shows bigger patterns, this analysis focuses on how the poet and his/hers work are being treated in the reviews in areas such as how much space they´re given in the newspapers, how they are named by the reviewer and the tendency to quote the reviewed work. And one qualitative analysis based on the new criticism method of close reading, that focuses on the reviewers way of writing and how that may be connected with theories of gender differences, this both connected to the gender of the reviewers and the poets. The material chosen for this study are all the reviews that were published in the same newspapers and that reviewed two specific poetry works by two specific poets chosen with great sensibility to age and career so that their difference in gender would be the most significant difference between them. The works were chosen based on year of publishing, they were supposed to be published as newly as possible and as close to each other in time as possible. The works I ended up with were Dimman av allt (2001) and Svart som silver (2008) by Bruno K. Öijer and Silverskåp (2000) and Nu försvinner vi eller ingår (2007) by Birgitta Lillpers. The results of this study show several differences in how poetry is being judged and how poetry reviews are being written are connected with the gender of the poets and the reviewer. Lillpers got 35% less space in the newspapers and Öijers poetry got quoted a lot more which confirms that female poetry often is considered as less important than the male poetry, and that men in general tends to be judged as more professional than woman. The male reviewers tended to express themselves with greater certainty than the female reviewers who held a more professional tone in their reviews and focused more on the technical aspects of the poetry. This confirms the theory of the male words are being looked upon as the truth but contradicts the theory of women writing more based on personal experience and of women being less skilled in language techniques. In conclusion, there are differences in how poetry gets reviewed and how the reviews are written that are connected to the genders of the poet and the reviewer but these differences are complex and does not show a clear normative way of thinking about gender

Biodiversity continues to decline in the face of increasing anthropogenic pressures such as habitat destruction, exploitation, pollution and introduction of alien species. Existing global databases of species' threat status or population time series are dominated by charismatic species. The collation of datasets with broad taxonomic and biogeographic extents, and that support computation of a range of biodiversity indicators, is necessary to enable better understanding of historical declines and to project - and avert - future declines. We describe and assess a new database of more than 1.6 million samples from 78 countries representing over 28,000 species, collated from existing spatial comparisons of local-scale biodiversity exposed to different intensities and types of anthropogenic pressures, from terrestrial sites around the world. The database contains measurements taken in 208 (of 814) ecoregions, 13 (of 14) biomes, 25 (of 35) biodiversity hotspots and 16 (of 17) megadiverse countries. The database contains more than 1% of the total number of all species described, and more than 1% of the described species within many taxonomic groups - including flowering plants, gymnosperms, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, beetles, lepidopterans and hymenopterans. The dataset, which is still being added to, is therefore already considerably larger and more representative than those used by previous quantitative models of biodiversity trends and responses. The database is being assembled as part of the PREDICTS project (Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems - http://www.predicts.org.uk). We make site-level summary data available alongside this article. The full database will be publicly available in 2015.

Cytoplasmic dynein is a multisubunit, microtubule-associated, mechanochemical enzyme that has been identified as a retrograde transporter of various membranous organelles. Dynactin, an additional multisubunit complex, is required for efficient dynein-mediated transport of vesicles in vitro. Recently, we showed that three genes defined by a group of phenotypically identical mutants of the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa encode proteins that are apparent subunits of either cytoplasmic dynein or dynactin. These mutants, designated ropy (ro), display abnormal hyphal growth and are defective in nuclear distribution. We propose that mutations in other genes encoding dynein/dynactin subunits are likely to result in a ropy phenotype and have devised a genetic screen for the isolation of additional ro mutants. Cytoplasmic dynein/dynactin is the largest and most complex of the cytoplasmic motor proteins, and the genetic system described here is unique in its potentiality for identifying mutations in undefined genes encoding dynein/dynactin subunits or regulators. We used this screen to isolate > 1000 ro mutants, which were found to define 23 complementation groups. Unexpectedly, interallelic complementation was observed with some allele pairs of ro-1 and ro-3, which are predicted to encode the largest subunits of cytoplasmic dynein and dynactin, respectively. The results suggest that the Ro1 and Ro3 polypeptides may consist of multiple, functionally independent domains. In addition, approximately 10% of all newly isolated ro mutantsdisplay unlinked noncomplementation with two or more of the mutants that define the 23 complementation groups. The frequent appearance of ro mutants showing noncomplementation with multiple ro mutants having unlinked mutations suggests that nuclear distribution in filamentous fungi is a process that is easily disrupted by affecting either dosage or activity of cytoplasmic dynein, dynactin, and perhaps other cytoskeletal proteins or regulators.

The mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium channel (mK(ATP)) is important in the protective mechanism of ischemic preconditioning (IPC). The channel is reportedly sensitive to reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, and the aim of this study was to compare such species in parallel, to build a more comprehensive picture of mK(ATP) regulation. mK(ATP) activity was measured by both osmotic swelling and Tl(+) flux assays, in isolated rat heart mitochondria. An isolated adult rat cardiomyocyte model of ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury was also used to determine the role of mK(ATP) in cardioprotection by nitroxyl. Key findings were as follows: (i) mK(ATP) was activated by O(2)(center dot-) and H(2)O(2) but not other peroxides. (ii) mK(ATP) was inhibited by NADPH. (iii) mK(ATP) was activated by S-nitrosothiols, nitroxyl, and nitrolinoleate. The latter two species also inhibited mitochondrial complex II. (iv) Nitroxyl protected cardiomyocytes against IR injury in an mK(ATP)-dependent manner. Overall, these results suggest that the mK(ATP) channel is activated by specific reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, and inhibited by NADPH. The redox modulation of mK(ATP) may be an underlying mechanism for its regulation in the context of IPC. This article is part of a Special Issue entitled: Mitochondria and Cardioprotection. We have recently demonstrated that hypertriglyceridemic (HTG) mice present both elevated body metabolic rates and mild mitochondrial uncoupling in the liver owing to stimulated activity of the ATP-sensitive potassium channel (mitoK(ATP)). Because lipid excess normally leads to cell redox imbalance, we examined the hepatic oxidative status in this model. Cell redox imbalance was evidenced by increased total levels of carbonylated proteins, malondialdehydes, and GSSG/GSH ratios in HTG livers compared to wild type. In addition, the activities of the extramitochondrial enzymes NADPH oxidase and xanthine oxidase were elevated in HTG livers. In contrast, Mn-superoxide dismutase activity and content, a mitochondrial matrix marker, were significantly decreased in HTG livers. isolated HTG liver mitochondria presented lower rates of H(2)O(2) production, which were reversed by mitoK(ATP) antagonists. In vivo antioxidant treatment with N-acetylcysteine decreased both mitoKATP activity and metabolic rates in HTG mice. These data indicate that high levels of triglycerides increase reactive oxygen generation by extramitochondrial enzymes that promote MitoK(ATP) activation. The mild uncoupling mediated by mitoK(ATP) increases metabolic rates and protects mitochondria against oxidative damage. Therefore, a biological role for mitoK(ATP) is a redox sensor is shown here for the first time in an in vivo model of systemic and cellular lipid excess, (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Single-phase perovskite 0.9Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.1PbTiO(3) (PMN-PT) powders were prepared by using a Ti-modified columbite precursor (MNT) obtained by the polymeric precursor method. The innovation consists in the preparation of Ti-modified columbite in order to react directly with a stoichiometric amount of PbO to obtain pyrochlore-free PMN-PT powders. It has been shown that titanium oxide forms a solid solution with columbite (MN) and does not affect the obtaining of a single-phase columbite precursor. Thus, a high amount of perovskite phase can be obtained by reaction with PbO at 800 degreesC for 2 h. Effects of K and Li additives on the structure of MNT and PMN-PT were studied. X-ray diffraction studies were carried out to verify the phase formation at each processing step and these data were used for structural refinement by the Rietveld method. Both K and Li additives increase the crystallinity of MNT powders, being this effect more intense for the Li-doped samples. For PMN-PT samples the additives cause an insignificant decrease in the amount of perovskite phase. The morphology of the PMN-PT powder depends on the type of the additive. The solid solution 0.9PbMg 1/3Nb 2/3O 3-0.1PbTiO 3 is one of the most widely investigated relaxor ceramic, because of its high dielectric constant and low sintering temperatures. PMN-PT powders containing single perovskite phase were prepared by using a Timodified columbite precursor obtained by the polymeric precursor method. Such precursor reacts directly with stoichiometric amount of PbO to obtain pyrochlore-free PMN-PT powders. The structural effects of K additive included in the columbite precursor and 0.9PMN-0.1PT powders were also studied. The phase formation at each processing step was verified by XRD analysis, being these results used for the structural refinement by the Rietveld method. It was verified the addition of K in the columbite precursor promotes a slight increasing in the powder crystallinity. There was not a decrease in the amount of perovskite phase PMN-PT for 1mol% of K, and the particle and grain size were reduced, making this additive a powerful tool for grain size control.

Identical neutral kaon pair correlations are measured in root s = 7 TeV pp collisions in the ALICE experiment. One-dimensional (KsKs0)-K-0 correlation functions in terms of the invariant momentum difference of kaon pairs are formed in two multiplicity and two transverse momentum ranges. The femtoscopic parameters for the radius and correlation strength of the kaon source are extracted. The fit includes quantum statistics and final-state interactions of the a(0)/f(0) resonance. (KsKs0)-K-0 correlations show an increase in radius for increasing multiplicity and a slight decrease in radius for increasing transverse mass, mT, as seen in pi pi correlations in pp collisions and in heavy-ion collisions. Transverse mass scaling is observed between the (KsKs0)-K-0 and pi pi radii. Also, the first observation is made of the decay of the f(2)'(1525) meson into the (KsKs0)-K-0 channel in pp collisions. In this work, we have applied sub-Doppler laser cooling to a K-39 magneto-optical trap in order to load a 1071 nm crossed optical dipole trap. The number of atoms loaded into the dipole trap was characterized as a function of the frequency and intensity of the cooling and repump laser beams. For the optimum conditions, the dipole trap has about 2 x 10(6) atoms at an atomic density of 2 x 10(12) cm(-3), with a temperature of about 10 mu K. This technique is a very simple procedure to load a K-39 optical dipole trap without a previous magnetic evaporative cooling step and may find application in other atomic physic systems.

The production of K*(892)(0) and phi(1020) in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV was measured by the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The yields and the transverse momentum spectra d(2)N/dydp(T) at midrapidity vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.5 in the range 0 < p(T) < 6 GeV/c for K*(892)(0) and 0.4 < p(T) < 6 GeV/c for phi(1020) are reported and compared to model predictions. Using the yield of pions, kaons, and Omega baryons measured previously by ALICE at root s = 7 TeV, the ratios K*/K-, phi/K*, phi/ K-, phi/pi(-), and (Omega + <(Omega)over bar>)/phi are presented. The values of the K*/K-, phi/K* and phi/K- ratios are similar to those found at lower centre-of-mass energies. In contrast, the phi/pi(-) ratio, which has been observed to increase with energy, seems to saturate above 200 GeV. The (Omega + (Omega) over bar)/phi ratio in the p(T) range 1-5 GeV/ c is found to be in good agreement with the prediction of the HIJING/B (B) over bar v2.0model with a strong colour field.

Nel presente lavoro di tesi sono state messe a confronto le ATP sintasi wild-type e γM23-K in cromatofori del batterio fotosintetico Rhodobacter capsulatus sotto gli aspetti funzionale e regolatorio. Si pensava inizialmente che la mutazione, in base a studi riportati in letteratura condotti sull’omologa mutazione in E. coli, avrebbe indotto disaccoppiamento intrinseco nell’enzima. Il presente lavoro ha chiarito che il principale effetto della mutazione è un significativo aumento dell’affinità dell’enzima per l’ADP inibitorio, che ne determina il ridotto livello di ATP idrolisi e la rapidissima reinattivazione in seguito ad attivazione da forza protonmotiva. Il residuo 23 della subunità γ si trova posizionato in prossimità della regione conservata DEELSED carica negativamente della subunità β, e l’introduzione nel mutante di una ulteriore carica positiva potrebbe determinare una maggiore richiesta di energia per indurre l’apertura del sito catalitico. Un’analisi quantitativa dei dati di proton pumping condotta mediante inibizione parziale dell’idrolisi del wildtype ha inoltre mostrato come il grado di accoppiamento del mutante in condizioni standard non differisca sostanzialmente da quello del wild-type. D’altro canto, è stato recentemente osservato come un disaccoppiamento intrinseco possa venire osservato in condizioni opportune anche nel wild-type, e cioè a basse concentrazioni di ADP e Pi. Nel presente lavoro di tesi si è dimostrato come nel mutante l’osservazione del fenomeno del disaccoppiamento intrinseco sia facilitata rispetto al wild-type. È stato proprio nell’ambito delle misure condotte sul mutante che è stato possibile dimostrare per la prima volta il ruolo fondamentale della componente elettrica della forza protonmotiva nel mantenere lo stato enzimatico ad elevato accoppiamento. Tale ruolo è stato successivamente messo in luce anche nel wild-type, in parte anche grazie all’uso di inibitori specifici di F1 e di FO. Il disaccoppiamento intrinseco nel wild-type è stato ulteriormente esaminato anche nella sua dipendenza dalla rimozione di ADP e Pi; in particolare, oltre all’amina fluorescente ACMA, è stata utilizzata come sonda di ΔpH anche la 9-aminoacridina e come sonda di Δψ l’Oxonolo VI. In entrambi i casi il ruolo accoppiante di questi due ligandi è stato confermato, inoltre utilizzando la 9-aminoacridina è stato possibile calibrare il segnale di fluorescenza con salti acido-base, dando quindi una base quantitativa ai dati ottenuti. Noi riteniamo che il più probabile candidato strutturale coinvolto in questi cambiamenti di stato enzimatici sia la subunità ε, di cui è noto il coinvolgimento in processi di regolazione e in cambiamenti strutturali indotti da nucleotidi e dalla forza protonmotiva. In collaborazione con il Dipartimento di Chimica Fisica dell’Università di Friburgo è in atto un progetto per studiare i cambiamenti strutturali presumibilmente associati al disaccoppiamento intrinseco tramite FRET in singola molecola di complessi ATP-sintasici marcati con fluorofori sia sulla subunità ε che sulla subunità γ. Nell’ambito di questa tesi sono stati creati a questo fine alcuni doppi mutanti cisteinici ed è stato messo a punto un protocollo per la loro marcatura con sonde fluorescenti.
