Drilling a transect of holes across the Costa Rica forearc during ODP Leg 170 demonstrated the margin wedge to be of continental, non accretionary origin, which is intersected by permeable thrust faults. Pore waters from four drillholes, two of which penetrated the décollement zone and reached the underthrust lower plate sedimentary sequence of the Cocos Plate, were examined for boron contents and boron isotopic signatures. The combined results show dilution of the uppermost sedimentary cover of the forearc, with boron contents lower than half of the present-day seawater values. Pore fluid "refreshening" suggests that gas hydrate water has been mixed with the sediment interstitial water, without profoundly affecting the d11B values. Fault-related flux of a deeply generated fluid is inferred from high B concentration in the interval beneath the décollement, being released from the underthrust sequence with incipient burial. First-order fluid budget calculations over a cross-section across the Costa Rica forearc indicate that no significant fluid transfer from the lower to the upper plate is inferred from boron fluid profiles, at least within the frontal 40 km studied. Expulsed lower plate pore water, which is estimated to be 0.26-0.44 km3 per km trench, is conducted efficiently along and just beneath the décollement zone, indicating effective shear-enhanced compaction. In the upper plate forearc wedge, dewatering occurs as diffuse transport as well as channelled flow. A volume of approximately 2 km3 per km trench is expulsed due to compaction and, to a lesser extent, lateral shortening. Pore water chemistry is influenced by gas hydrate instability, so that it remains unknown whether deep processes like mineral dehydration or hydrocarbon formation may play a considerable role towards the hinterland.

Kornerupine and prismatine were introduced independently by Lorenzen in 1884 (but published in 1886 and 1893) and by Sauer in 1886, respectively. Ussing (1889) showed that the two minerals were sufficiently close crystallographically and chemically to be regarded as one species. However, recent analyses of boron using the ion microprobe and crystal structure refinement, indicate that the boron content of one tetrahedral site in kornerupine ranges from 0 to 1. Kornerupine and prismatine, from their respective type localities of Fiskenaesset, Greenland and Waldheim, Germany, are distinct minerals, members of an isomorphic series differing in boron content. For this reason, we re-introduce Sauer's name prismatine for kornerupines with B > 0.5 atoms per formula unit (p.f.u.) of 22(O,OH,F), and restrict the name kornerupine sensu stricto to kornerupines with B < 0.5 p.f.u. Kornerupine sensu lato is an appropriate group name for kornerupine of unknown boron content. Kornerupine sensu stricto and prismatine from the type localities differ also in Fe2+/Mg ratio, Si - (Mg + Fe2+ + Mn) content, Al content, F content, colour, density, cell parameters, and paragenesis. Both minerals formed under granulite-facies conditions with sapphirine and phlogopite, but kornerupine sensu stricto is associated with anorthite and homblende or gedrite, whereas prismatine is found with oligoclase (An9-13), sillimanite, garnet, and/or tourmaline. Occurrences at other localities suggest that increasing boron content extends the stability range of prismatine relative to that of kornerupine sensu stricto.

Boron contents and boron isotopic compositions were determined for the uppermost 1.3 km section of typical 6.2 Ma oceanic crust from DSDP/ODP Hole 504B, Costa Rica Rift, Galapagos Spreading Center. Both the boron content and the d11B value in the oceanic crust are controlled by two types of alteration: 1. (1) low-temperature alteration (0 to 60°C; Zones I and II) and 2. (2) high-temperature hydrothermal alteration (200 to 400°C; Zones III and IV). Basalts subjected to the low-temperature alteration are characterized by their relatively high boron contents (0.69 to 19.3 ppm) and high d11B values (+2.2 to +10.6?), indicating uptake of boron into secondary phases in equilibrium with seawater or evolved seawater. Hydrothermally altered basalts contain less abundant boron (0.17 to 0.52 ppm) and relatively constant d11B values (?0.1 to +1.0?). Although basalts from the upper part of these hydrothermal zones (<1300 mbsf) show equilibrated boron content and d11B value with aqueous fluid, effective leaching of boron from basalt is predominant in the lower part (>1300 mbsf). Original boron content and d11B value of the Hole 504B MORB were 0.35 ppm and +0.2?, respectively. The present data provide fundamental information in understanding of the distribution of boron and boron isotopes in the oceanic crust.

Boron and chlorine were determined in rain water and in atmospheric moisture condensed in a "Saratov" refrigerator. Ocean is the main source of boron on the earth surface. Boron evaporates from the ocean and enriches atmospheric precipitation: B/Cl ratio of ocean water (0.00024) increases by factor of 10-15. Assuming that the average Cl content in global river runoff is 7.8 mg/l and boron content 0.013 mgl, B/Cl ratio in this runoff is 0.0017. The average B/Cl ratio in rain water of the Golubaya (Blue) Bay (Gelendzhik, Black Sea region) is 0.0026 and in condensates of atmospheric moisture during onshore and offshore winds in the same region it averages from 0.0029 to 0.0033. The maximum boron content in the condensates of this region during onshore winds was 0.032 mg/l and the minimum during offshore winds, 0.004 mg/l. /Cl ratio in sea water over the Atlantic Ocean and in the Gelendzhik area of the Black Sea varied within narrow range, mostly from 0.0025 to 0.0035. Similar B/Cl ratio (0.0024) was found for atmospheric precipitation on the slope of the Terskei Ala-Tau near the Issyk-Kul Lake in 1969. Thus, although chemistries of boron and chlorine (in chlorides) are very different, the B/Cl ratio in the atmosphere is fairly constant. This can be taken as a confirmation of an assumption that salt composition of sea water passes into the atmosphere in molecularly dispersed state. Supposing that the ocean-atmosphere system is in equilibrium as regards to the boron budget, it can be assumed that the same amount of boron passes from the ocean into bottom sediments and from lithosphere rocks and soils into the hydrosphere.

This paper describes the sintering of an 18Ni(350) maraging steel with additions of boron, with the aim of producing high hardness rapid tooling. Reaction of the boron with the alloying elements in the maraging steel resulted in the formation of a Mo- and Ti-rich borides. The former melted at similar to1220degreesC, providing a liquid phase for enhanced sintering. Although densification could occur regardless of the boron content, especially at high temperature, 0.4% B was required to produce a near full density component. The formation of the various borides depleted the matrix of critical age hardening elements. However, by altering the starting powder composition to compensate for this, hardness close to the wrought alloy has been achieved. This hardness was comparable to a common die casting tool steel. Examples of dies produced using selective laser sintering (SLS) are also shown. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Phase transformation behaviour of amorphous electroless Ni-B coating with a targeted composition of Ni-6wt% B is characterized in conjunction with microstructural development and hardness. Microscopic observations of the as-deposited coating display a novel microstructure which is already phase separated at multiple length scales. Spherical colonies of similar to 5 mu m consist of 2-3 mu m nodular regions which are surrounded by similar to 2-3 mu m region that contains fine bands ranging from 10 to 70 nm in width. The appearance of three crystalline phases in this binary system at different stages of heat treatment and the concomitant variation in hardness are shown to arise from nanoscale fluctuations in the as-deposited boron content from 4 to 8 wt%. High temperature annealing reveals continuous crystallization up to 430 degrees C, overlapping with the domain of B loss due to diffusion into the substrate. The implications of such a microstructure for optimal heat treatment procedures are discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, the yellow-to-blue intensity ratio of Dy3+ (Y/B) and the red-to-orange intensity ratio of Eu3+ (R/O) were studied in relation to the compositions and structures of alkaline-earth borates. The dependence of the energy of the Eu3+ charge-transfer band (CTB) and of the emission intensity of Dy3+ on the alkaline-earth ions and the boron content of the hosts is discussed.

The structure of laser glasses in the system (B(2)O(3))(0.6){(Al(2)O(3))(0.4-x)(Y(2)O(3))(x)} (0.1 <= x <= 0.25) has been investigated by means of (11)B, (27)Al, and (89)Y solid state NMR as well as Y-3d core-level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, (11)B magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra reveal that the majority of the boron atoms are three-coordinated, and a slight increase of four-coordinated boron content with increasing x can be noticed. (27)Al MAS NMR spectra show that the alumina species are present in the coordination states four, five and six. All of them are in intimate contact with both the three- and the four-coordinate boron species and vice versa, as indicated by (11)B/(27)Al rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) data. These results are consistent with the formation of a homogeneous, nonsegregated glass structure. For the first time, (89)Y solid state NMR has been used to probe the local environment of Y(3+) ions in a glass-forming system. The intrinsic sensitivity problem associated with (89)Y NMR has been overcome by combining the benefits of paramagnetic doping with those of signal accumulation via Carr-Purcell spin echo trains. Both the (89)Y chemical shifts and the Y-3d core level binding energies are found to be rather sensitive to the yttrium bonding state and reveal that the bonding properties of the yttrium atoms in these glasses are similar to those found in the model compounds YBO(3) and YAl(3)(BO(3))(4), Based on charge balance considerations as well as (11)B NMR line shape analyses, the dominant borate species are concluded to be meta- and pyroborate anions.

We present first-principles calculations of the thermodynamic and electronic properties of the zinc-blende ternary InxGa1-xN. InxAl1-xN, BxGa1-xN, and BxAl1-xN alloys. They are based on a generalized quasi-chemical approximation and a pseudopotential-plane-wave method. T-x phase diagrams for the alloys are obtained, We show that due to the large difference in interatomic distances between the binary compounds a significant phase miscibility gap for the alloys is found. In particular for the InxGa1-xN alloy, we show also experimental results obtained from X-ray and resonant Raman scattering measurements, which indicate the presence of an In-rich phase with x approximate to 0.8. For the boron-containing alloy layers we found a very high value for the critical temperature for miscibility. similar to9000 K. providing an explanation for the difficulties encountered to grow these materials with higher boron content. The influence of a biaxial strain on phase diagrams, energy gaps and gap bowing of these alloys is also discussed. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The present work had as objective the study of clones of Eucalyptus grandis and E. grandis × E. urophylla under boron suppression on growth in height and diameter, development of symptoms of deficiency, boron content in leaf and polyols production. Plants were cultivated in pots with quartz in a greenhouse using two levels of boron per solution (0 and 0.5 mg L-1 of B). The 32 treatments followed a factorial scheme: 16 × 2 -16 clones and two doses of boron in a randomized block experimental design, with fve repetitions, totaling 160 plots. Plants were evaluated weekly for deficiency symptoms and monthly for height, stem diameter and leaf content of boron in different plant parts. The content of polyols was measured in two occasions: at 162 days and 192 days after starting the experiment. Decrease of growth and quick development of deficiency symptoms 40 days after boron suppression were observed, as well as a decrease of polyols synthesis. Foliar analysis, with boron supplement, resulted in the presence of mannitol and sorbitol in high enough concentration so that the evaluated plants could be considered rich in those polyols. Under boron suppression, boron levels in different portions of branches and stems of plants, as well as the presence of mannitol and sorbitol, indicated a conditional mobility of boron in Eucalyptus.
