An attractive microstructural possibility for enhancing the ductility of high-strength nanocrystals is to develop a bimodal grain-size distribution, in which the fine grains provide strength, and the coarser grains enable strain hardening. Annealing of nanocrystalline Ni over a range of temperatures and times led to microstructures with varying volume fractions of coarse grains and a change in texture. Tensile tests revealed a drastic reduction in ductility with increasing volume fraction of coarse grains. The reduction in ductility may be related to the segregation of sulphur to grain boundaries.

An in situ bulk ultrafine bimodal eutectic Al-Cu-Si composite was synthesized by solidification. This heterostructured composite with microstructural length scale hierarchy in the eutectic microstructure, which combines an ultrafine-scale binary cellular eutectic (alpha-Al + Al2Cu) and a nanometer-sized anomalous ternary eutectic (alpha-Al + Al2Cu + Si), exhibits high fracture strength (1.1 +/- 0.1 GPa) and large compressive plastic strain (11 +/- 2%) at room temperature. The improved compressive plasticity of the bimodal-nanoeutectic composite originates from homogeneous and uniform distribution of inhomogeneous plastic deformation (localized shear bands), together with strong interaction between shear bands in the spatially heterogeneous structure.

Nanoconfined synthesized crystalline fullerene mesoporous carbon (C60-FMC) with bimodal pore architectures of 4.95 nm and 10-15 nm pore sizes characterized by XRD, TEM, nitrogen adsorption/ desorption isotherm and solid-state NMR, and the material was used for protein immobilization. The solid-state 13C NMR spectrum of C60-FMC along with XRD, BET and TEM confirms the formation of fullerene mesoporous carbon structure C60-FMC. The immobilization of albumin (from bovine serum, BSA) protein biomolecule in a buffer solution at pH 4.7 was used to determine the adsorption properties of the C60-FMC material and its structural changes investigated by FT-IR. We demonstrated that the C60-FMC with high surface area and pore volumes have excellent adsorption capacity towards BSA protein molecule. Protein adsorption experiments clearly showed that the C60-FMC with bimodal pore architectures (4.95 nm and 10-15 nm) are suitable material to be used for protein adsorption

Dodecylsulphate-intercalated zinc hydroxysalt, Zn-5(OH)(8)(DS)(2)center dot mH(2)O delaminates to give monolayer colloidal dispersions in alcohols such as 1-butanol and ethylene glycol. The extent of delamination and the stability of the colloidal dispersion are comparable to those of layered double hydroxides. The solvothermal decomposition of the colloidal dispersion of the hydroxysalt in ethylene glycol yields a bimodal ZnO having a nanotubular structure decorated with nanosheets. Compressive strength of epoxy with "free-inforcement" flyash without any prior separation is studied. It is observed that the increase in filler volume fraction beyond 10% brings about a reduction in the compressive strength. Increasing adhesion factor, determined relative to unfilled matrix, implied an alleviation in the interfacial adhesion due to dewetting, especially at the surfaces of larger particles and at higher filler concentrations. Such deductions were verified by examining the surface features of compression tested samples in Scanning Electron Microscope.

In general the objective of accurately encoding the input data and the objective of extracting good features to facilitate classification are not consistent with each other. As a result, good encoding methods may not be effective mechanisms for classification. In this paper, an earlier proposed unsupervised feature extraction mechanism for pattern classification has been extended to obtain an invertible map. The method of bimodal projection-based features was inspired by the general class of methods called projection pursuit. The principle of projection pursuit concentrates on projections that discriminate between clusters and not faithful representations. The basic feature map obtained by the method of bimodal projections has been extended to overcome this. The extended feature map is an embedding of the input space in the feature space. As a result, the inverse map exists and hence the representation of the input space in the feature space is exact. This map can be naturally expressed as a feedforward neural network.

Pre-starvation amoebae of Dictyostelium discoideum exhibit random movements. Starved cells aggregate by directed movements (chemotaxis) towards cyclic AMP and differentiate into live spores or dead stalk cells. Many differences between presumptive spore and stalk cells precede differentiation. We have examined whether cell motility-related factors are also among them. Cell speeds and localisation of motility-related signalling molecules were monitored by live cell imaging and immunostaining (a) in nutrient medium during growth, (b) immediately following transfer to starvation medium and (c) in nutrient medium that was re-introduced after a brief period of starvation. Cells moved randomly under all three conditions but mean speeds increased following transfer from nutrient medium to starvation medium; the transition occurred within 15 min. The distribution of speeds in starvation medium was bimodal: about 20% of the cells moved significantly faster than the remaining 80%. The motility-related molecules F-actin, PTEN and PI3 kinase were distributed differently in slow and fast cells. Among starved cells, the calcium content of slower cells was lower than that of the faster cells. All differences reverted within 15 min after restoration of the nutrient medium. The slow/fast distinction was missing in Polysphondylium pallidum, a cellular slime mould that lacks the presumptive stalk and spore cell classes, and in the trishanku (triA(center dot)) mutant of D. discoideum, in which the classes exist but are unstable. The transition from growth to starvation triggers a spontaneous and reversible switch in the distribution of D. discoideum cell speeds. Cells whose calcium content is relatively low (known to be presumptive spore cells) move slower than those whose calcium levels are higher (known to be presumptive stalk cells). Slow and fast cells show different distributions of motility-related proteins. The switch is indicative of a bistable mechanism underlying cell motility.

The development of high-strength aluminum alloys that can operate at 250 degrees C and beyond remains a challenge to the materials community. In this paper we report preliminary development of nanostructural Al-Cu-Ni ternary alloys containing alpha-Al, binary Al2Cu and ternary Al2Cu4Ni intermetallics. The alloys exhibits fracture strength of similar to 1 GPa with similar to 9% fracture strain at room temperature. At 300 degrees C, the alloy retains the high strength. The reasons for such significant mechanical properties are rationalized by unraveling the roles and response of various microstructural features. (C) 2014 Acta Materialia Inc. The nanoindentation response of the (001) face of sodium saccharin dihydrate is examined. The structure can be demarcated into regular and irregular regions or domains. The regular domains have solid-like and the irregular ones have liquid-like characteristics. Therefore, these domains impart a microstructure to the crystal. The indent face (001) is prominently developed in this crystal and unambiguously presents the regular and irregular regions to nanoindention. Average values of elastic modulus and hardness show a distinct bimodal mechanical response. Such a response has been observed in the case of intergrown polymorphs of aspirin and felodipine. We examine two possible reasons as to why the responses could be for bimodal in this crystal. The first possibility could be that the two domains correspond to regions of the original dihydrate and a lower hydrate that is obtained by the loss of some water. The second possibility could be that these responses correspond to regular and irregular regions in the structure. Nanoindentation is a very useful technique in the characterization of molecular solids, as a complementary technique to X-ray crystallography, because it samples different length scales.

Polyurethane foams with multimodal cell distribution exhibit superior mechanical and thermal properties. A technique for generating bimodal bubble size distribution exists in the literature, but it uses supercritical conditions. In the present work, an alternative based on milder operating conditions is proposed. It is a modification of reaction injection molding (RIM), using reactants already seeded with bubbles. The number density of the seeds determines if two nucleating events can occur. A bimodal bubble size distribution is obtained when this happens A mathematical model is used to test this hypothesis by simulating water blown free rise polyurethane foams. The effects of initial concentration of bubbles, temperature of the reactants, and the weight fraction of water are studied. The study reveals that for certain concentrations of initial number of bubbles, when initial temperature and weight fraction of water are high, it is possible to obtain a second nucleation event, leading to bimodal bubble size distribution.

A new method is presented for the extraction of single-chain form factors and interchain interference functions from a range of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments on bimodal homopolymer blends. The method requires a minimum of three blends, made up of hydrogenated and deuterated components with matched degree of polymerization at two different chain lengths, but with carefully varying deuteration levels. The method is validated through an experimental study on polystyrene homopolymer bimodal blends with M A≈1/2MB. By fitting Debye functions to the structure factors, it is shown that there is good agreement between the molar mass of the components obtained from SANS and from chromatography. The extraction method also enables, for the first time, interchain scattering functions to be produced for scattering between chains of different lengths. © 2014 The Authors. Self-assembled InAs quantum dots were prepared on GaAS(100)) substrate in a solid source molecular beam epitaxy system The distribution and topographic images of uncapped dots were studied by atomic force microscope. The statistical result shows that the quantum dots are bimodal distribution. The photoluminescence spectrum results shows that the intensity of small size quantum dots dominated, which may be due to: (1) the state density of large quantum dots lower than that of small quantum dots; (2) the carriers capture rate of large size quantum dots is small relative to that of small ones; (3) there is a large strain barrier between large quantum dots and capping layer, and the large strain is likely to produce the defect and dislocation, resulting in a probability carriers transferring from large quantum dots to small dots that is very small with temperature increasing.

The effects of growth temperature on the bimodal size distribution of InAs quantum dots on vicinal GaAs(100) substrates grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition are studied. An abnormal trend of the bimodal size evolution on temperature is observed. With the increase of the growth temperature, while the density of the large dots decreases continually, that of the small dots first grows larger when temperature was below 520 degrees C, and then exhibits a sudden decrease at 535 degrees C. The trend is explained by taking into account the presence of multiatomic steps on the substrates. Photoluminescence (PL) studies show that quantum dots on vicinal substrates have a narrower PL linewidth, a longer emission wavelength, and a larger PL intensity than those of the dots with exact substrates.
