This paper presents a multimodal analysis of online self-representations of the Elite Squad of the military police of Rio de Janeiro, the Special Police Operations Battalion BOPE. The analysis is placed within the wider context of a “new military urbanism”, which is evidenced in the ongoing “Pacification” of many of the city’s favelas, in which BOPE plays an active interventionist as well as a symbolic role, and is a kind of solution which clearly fails to address the root causes of violence which lie in poverty and social inequality. The paper first provides a sociocultural account of BOPE’s role in Rio’s public security and then looks at some of the mainly visual mediated discourses the Squad employs in constructing a public image of itself as a modern and efficient, yet at the same time “magical” police force.

The present study describes and evaluates the horizontal and vertical structures of a lowland forest fragment on a hillock in the municipality of Silva Jardim, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil (22 degrees 31`56 `` S and 42 degrees 20`46 `` W). Twenty plots (10x2m) totaling 0.5ha were laid out following the slope grade using DBH >= 5cm as the inclusion criterion. A total of 734 individuals were encountered, yielding a total density of 1468 ind./ha and a total basal area of 10783m(2). The richness values (129 species/41 families), Shannon-Wiener diversity (4.22) and equitability (0.87) indices indicated an accentuated floristic heterogeneity and low ecological dominance. Lauraceae, Myrtaceae, Fabaceae and Euphorbiaceae showed the greatest species richness, corroborating other studies that indicated these species as the most representative of Atlantic Forest areas in southeastern Brazil. The species with the greatest importance values (VI) were Aparisthmium cordatum, Guapira opposita, Lacistema pubescens, Xylopia sericea, Tapirira guianensis and Piptocarpha macropoda. The high diversity observed was influenced by earlier anthropogenic actions and by the current successional stage. The forest fragment studied demonstrated closer floristic similarity to areas inventoried in a close-by biological reserve than to fragments dispersed throughout the coastal plain. Similarities in soil type, degree of soil saturation and use-history of forest resources all support these relationships. The fragmented physiognomy of the central lowland in this region and the use-history of the landscape make these small remnant forest areas important in terms of establishing strategies for landscape restoration and species conservation.

Hepatozoon canis is a tick-borne protozoan that infects dogs and has been reported throughout the world. Manifestation of H. canis infection varies from being sub-clinical in apparently healthy dogs to severe illness. The main vector of the infection is the dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus although other species may also transmit this agent. H. canis has been reported previously in Brazil, but mostly as an occasional finding during laboratory exams and always associated with other diseases. The prevalence of H. canis in dogs of rural areas of Brazil has been little studied. For this study, 250 dogs from seven counties of Rio de Janeiro state were examined. All the dogs were from rural areas, near forest. of the dogs examined, 26 dogs were from Seropedica, 82 from Itaguai, 41 from Paracambi, 26 from Mangaratiba, 32 from Barra do Pirai, 32 from Pirai and 11 from Miguel Pereira. Blood smears from the peripheral blood of the ear were taken and ticks found on the dogs were collected for identification in the laboratory. Using blood smear evaluation, H. canis was identified in 39.2% of the animals examined. Other hemoparasites identified were Babesia canis (5.2%) and Ehrlichia canis (4.8%). Four tick species were found parasitizing the dogs: Amblyomma cajennense (23.6%), R. sanguineus (12.4%), Amblyomma aureolatum (2.8%) and Amblyomma ovale (2.0%). Refletir sobre a relação entre os festejos carnavalescos e o movimento folclorista implica admitir as diferenças de perspectivas na constituição desses campos. Observa-se, inicialmente, que os processos de institucionalização dos carnavais brincados no Rio de Janeiro entre os anos 1934 e 1937, configuram um campo cultural à parte do movimento folclorista que se efetiva no Brasil nas décadas seguintes. Enquanto as práticas carnavalescas se consolidaram na década de 1930, em mediação com a imprensa e com o poder público, ligadas às preocupações de forjar a nacionalidade, o movimento folclórico tenta se institucionalizar, com o mesmo propósito, e definir seu campo de atuação e objetos de pesquisas, entre as décadas de 40 e 60. Porém, o carnaval não é o cerne desse debate e tampouco manifestação que deva se integrar às tradições brasileiras.

Esta pesquisa trata das alterações ocorridas na propriedade dos monges da Ordem de São Bento no Rio de Janeiro. O crescimento da cidade, a falta de monges nos claustros e o aumento do número de escravos no século XIX, contribuíram para a configuração desse espaço e também nas mudanças dos preceitos religiosos. Com base a Regra de São Bento novas práticas foram apontadas nesse universo monástico exigindo maior rigor na conduta dos monges e da sua mão-de-obra cativa no cotidiano do mosteiro. Dessa forma, aponto como as transformações ocorridas na administração da Congregação Beneditina do Brasil e os interesses do Governo Imperial no patrimônio da Ordem estabeleceram uma relação de poder entre os monges e seus escravos, no período de 1819 a 1842. A partir da análise da Confraria do Rosário, constituída na capela-mor do mosteiro, ilumino o lugar dos cativos nessa nova organização, observando-a como parte de uma tática de produção de corpos submissos à moral e à disciplina.

This paper takes a multimethod approach which combines ethnographic techniques and discourse studies to investigate two contrasting professional groups: community photographers, who are favela dwellers who have developed photographic projects in Brazil‘s favelas, and photojournalists of the mainstream media. Its purpose is to determine how a cultural and social divide in the city of Rio de Janeiro shapes both community photographers and mainstream photojournalists’ practices, discourses, and identities. While community photographers strive to establish a humane and positive view about favelas and their residents by shifting the focus from poverty, shortages, violence, and criminality to images of the ordinary life, mainstream photojournalists express the view that their role is of primary importance for the defence of human rights in the favelas by helping to prevent, for instance, police abuses and violations. As the data analysis indicated the existence of socio-spatial borders all over Rio de Janeiro, this study adopted the idea of a divided city without denying interconnections between favelas and the city’s political life. Through the analysis of categories which emerged from the data, the complex world of documenting favela life is explored. The major themes touched upon are: the breakdown between the mainstream media and the favela communities; the different kinds of relationships which arise in Rio’s low income suburbs; and the gradual return of mainstream news workers to favelas.

Esta tese tem por objetivo apontar como a psicologia se torna uma ferramenta importante na formação do clero, especificamente, seu ensino no seminário de formação religiosa católica do Mosteiro de São Bento do Rio de Janeiro, no período de 1930 a 1950. Os religiosos católicos fizeram parte de muitos acontecimentos não só da história da Igreja, mas também da própria história do Brasil. Comandaram a educação nos primórdios da colonização, mantendo influência na organização educacional mesmo com a proclamação da República como estado laico. Falar da formação do homem/sacerdote decorre do entendimento de que os religiosos católicos foram um dos principais grupos disseminadores do saber psicológico em nossa pátria. O período de nosso recorte é marcado por transformações na política, na economia e na educação nacional que afetaram a todos, inclusive ao clero. Entre as mudanças no seminário de São Bento, encontramos a introdução da disciplina psicologia no currículo de formação dos monges, bem como a presença de uma crescente literatura psicológica introduzida principalmente através de comentadores religiosos, demonstrando que as relações entre Igreja e ciência assumem novo patamar no período estudado
