Nachdem es in den letzten Jahrzehnten gelang, Unterschiede in den Schwermineralassoziationen der Geschiebemergel festzustellen, erschien es notwendig, auch die quartären Sande auf stratigraphisch verwertbare Schwermineralvergesellschaftungen zu untersuchen. Als Ausgangsmaterial dienten Proben, die bei Bohrungen der Forschungsstelle Norderney, im Auftrag des Niedersächsischen Landesamtes für Bodenforschung, entnommen wurden. Der Untersuchungsraum der vorliegenden Arbeit erstreckt sich auf das Wattengebiet südlich der Inseln Baitrum, Langeoog und Spieckeroog. Von den abgeteuften Bohrungen wurden 22 schwermineralanalytisch untersucht. An Hand dieser Proben wird das im Arbeitsgebiet vorliegende Sediment auf stratigraphisch verwertbare Schwermineralassoziationen untersucht, werden Leitminerale und ihre Mengenverhältnisse analysiert. Weiterhin soll der Einfluß von Umlagerungsvorgängen auf Schwermineralassoziationen geklärt werden.

The classification of airborne lidar data is a relevant task in different disciplines. The information about the geometry and the full waveform can be used in order to classify the 3D point cloud. In Wadden Sea areas the classification of lidar data is of main interest for the scientific monitoring of coastal morphology and habitats, but it becomes a challenging task due to flat areas with hardly any discriminative objects. For the classification we combine a Conditional Random Fields framework with a Random Forests approach. By classifying in this way, we benefit from the consideration of context on the one hand and from the opportunity to utilise a high number of classification features on the other hand. We investigate the relevance of different features for the lidar points in coastal areas as well as for the interaction of neighbouring points.

The environment of ebb-tidal deltas between barrier island systems is characterized by a complex morphology with ebb- and flood-dominated channels, shoals and swash bars connecting the ebb-tidal delta platform to the adjacent island. These morphological features reveal characteristic surface sediment grain-size distributions and are subject to a continuous adaptation to the prevailing hydrodynamic forces. The mixed-energy tidal inlet Otzumer Balje between the East Frisian barrier islands of Langeoog and Spiekeroog in the southern North Sea has been chosen here as a model study area for the identification of relevant hydrodynamic drivers of morphology and sedimentology. We compare the effect of high-energy, wave-dominated storm conditions to mid-term, tide-dominated fair-weather conditions on tidal inlet morphology and sedimentology with a process-based numerical model. A multi-fractional approach with five grain-size fractions between 150 and 450 µm allows for the simulation of corresponding surface sediment grain-size distributions. Net sediment fluxes for distinct conditions are identified: during storm conditions, bed load sediment transport is generally onshore directed on the shallower ebb-tidal delta shoals, whereas fine-grained suspended sediment bypasses the tidal inlet by wave-driven currents. During fair weather the sediment transport mainly focuses on the inlet throat and the marginal flood channels. We show how the observed sediment grain-size distribution and the morphological response at mixed-energy tidal inlets are the result of both wave-dominated less frequent storm conditions and mid-term, tide-dominant fair-weather conditions.

The quality of water level time series data strongly varies with periods of high and low quality sensor data. In this paper we are presenting the processing steps which were used to generate high quality water level data from water pressure measured at the Time Series Station (TSS) Spiekeroog. The TSS is positioned in a tidal inlet between the islands of Spiekeroog and Langeoog in the East Frisian Wadden Sea (southern North Sea). The processing steps will cover sensor drift, outlier identification, interpolation of data gaps and quality control. A central step is the removal of outliers. For this process an absolute threshold of 0.25m/10min was selected which still keeps the water level increase and decrease during extreme events as shown during the quality control process. A second important feature of data processing is the interpolation of gappy data which is accomplished with a high certainty of generating trustworthy data. Applying these methods a 10 years dataset (December 2002-December 2012) of water level information at the TSS was processed resulting in a seven year time series (2005-2011).
