The creation of electrocatalysts based on noble metals has received a significant amount of research interest due to their extensive use as fuel cell catalysts and electrochemical sensors. There have been many attempts to improve the activity of these metals through creating nanostructures, as well as post-synthesis treatments based on chemical, electrochemical, sonochemical and thermal approaches. In many instances these methods result in a material with active surface states, which can be considered to be adatoms or clusters of atoms on the surface that have a low lattice co-ordination number making them more prone to electrochemical oxidation at a wide range of potentials that are significantly less positive than those of their bulk metal counterparts. This phenomenon has been termed pre-monolayer oxidation and has been reported to occur on a range of metallic surfaces. In this work we present findings on the presence of active sites on Pd that has been: evaporated as a thin film; electrodeposited as nanostructures; as well as commercially available Pd nanoparticles supported on carbon. Significantly, advantage is taken of the low oxidation potential of these active sites whereby bimetallic surfaces are created by the spontaneous deposition of Ag from AgNO3 to generate Pd/Ag surfaces. Interestingly this approach does not increase the surface area of the original metal but has significant implications for its further use as an electrode material. It results in the inhibition or promotion of electrocatalytic activity which is highly dependent on the reaction of interest. As a general approach the decoration of active catalytic materials with less active metals for a particular reaction also opens up the possibility of investigating the role of the initially present active sites on the surface and identifying the degree to which they are responsible for electrocatalytic activity.

This topical review discusses the influence of the surface geometry (e.g. lattice parameters and termination) and electronic structure of well-defined bimetallic surfaces on the adsorption and dissociation of benzene. The available data can be divided into two categories with combinations of non-transition metals and transition metals on the one side and combinations of two transition metals on the other. The main effect of non-transition metals in surface alloys is site blocking which can suppress chemisorption and dissociation of the molecules completely. When two transition metals are combined, the effects are less dramatic. They mainly affect the strength of the chemisorption bond and the degree of dissociation due to electronic and template effects.

Even though gold is the noblest of metals, a weak chemisorber and is regarded as being quite inert, it demonstrates significant electrocatalytic activity in its nanostructured form. It is demonstrated here that nanostructured and even evaporated thin films of gold are covered with active sites which are responsible for such activity. The identification of these sites is demonstrated with conventional electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry as well as a large amplitude Fourier transformed alternating current (FT-ac) method under acidic and alkaline conditions. The latter technique is beneficial in determining if an electrode process is either Faradaic or capacitive in nature. The observed behaviour is analogous to that observed for activated gold electrodes whose surfaces have been severely disrupted by cathodic polarisation in the hydrogen evolution region. It is shown that significant electrochemical oxidation responses occur at discrete potential values well below that for the formation of the compact monolayer oxide of bulk gold and are attributed to the facile oxidation of surface active sites. Several electrocatalytic reactions are explored in which the onset potential is determined by the presence of such sites on the surface. Significantly, the facile oxidation of active sites is used to drive the electroless deposition of metals such as platinum, palladium and silver from their aqueous salts on the surface of gold nanostructures. The resultant surface decoration of gold with secondary metal nanoparticles not only indicates regions on the surface which are rich in active sites but also provides a method to form interesting bimetallic surfaces.

Ordered intermetallic phases of Pt with several transition metals have been prepared and their electrocatalytic properties studied. In light of these tests it is proposed that these catalysts could be used as electrodes in fuel cells, as they combine an excellent capacity to adsorb organic fuels at the Pt sites with low susceptibility to being poisoned by intermediates and reaction products at the transition-metal sites. An experimental procedure used to obtain the four intermetallic phases Pt-M (M = Mn, Pb, Sb and Sn) is described. The phases thus produced were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with surface analysis by energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The data thus obtained support the conclusion that the method described here is highly effective for the preparation of Pt-M phases featuring a range of structural and electronic modifications that will allow a useful relation to be established between their physicochemical properties and predicted electrocatalytic activity. Gold is often considered as an inert material but it has been unequivocally demonstrated that it possesses unique electronic, optical, catalytic and electrocatalytic properties when in a nanostructured form.[1] For the latter the electrochemical behaviour of gold in aqueous media has been widely studied on a plethora of gold samples, including bulk polycrystalline and single-crystal electrodes, nanoparticles, evaporated films as well as electrodeposited nanostructures, particles and thin films.[1b, 2] It is now well-established that the electrochemical behaviour of gold is not as simple as an extended double-layer charging region followed by a monolayer oxide-formation/-removal process. In fact the so-called double-layer region of gold is significantly more complicated and has been investigated with a variety of electrochemical and surface science techniques. Burke and others[3] have demonstrated that significant processes due to the oxidation of low lattice stabilised atoms or clusters of atoms occur in this region at thermally and electrochemically treated electrodes which were confirmed later by Bond[4] to be Faradaic in nature via large-amplitude Fourier transformed ac voltammetric experiments. Supporting evidence for the oxidation of gold in the double-layer region was provided by Bard,[5] who used a surface interrogation mode of scanning electrochemical microscopy to quantify the extent of this process that forms incipient oxides on the surface. These were estimated to be as high as 20% of a monolayer. This correlated with contact electrode resistance measurements,[6] capacitance measurements[7] and also electroreflection techniques...

The mutual influence of surface geometry (e.g. lattice parameters, morphology) and electronic structure is discussed for Cu-Ni bimetallic (111) surfaces. It is found that on flat surfaces the electronic d-states of the adlayer experience very little influence from the substrate electronic structure which is due to their large separation in binding energies and the close match of Cu and Ni lattice constants. Using carbon monoxide and benzene as probe molecules, it is found that in most cases the reactivity of Cu or Ni adlayers is very similar to the corresponding (111) single crystal surfaces. Exceptions are the adsorption of CO on submonolayers of Cu on Ni(111) and the dissociation of benzene on Ni/Cu(111) which is very different from Ni(111). These differences are related to geometric factors influencing the adsorption on these surfaces.

The fabrication of nanostructured bimetallic materials through electrochemical routes offers the ability to control the composition and shape of the final material that can then be effectively applied as (electro)-catalysts. In this work a clean and transitory hydrogen bubble templating method is employed to generate porous Cu–Au materials with a highly anisotropic nanostructured interior. Significantly, the co-electrodeposition of copper and gold promotes the formation of a mixed bimetallic oxide surface which does not occur at the individually electrodeposited materials. Interestingly, the surface is dominated by Au(I) oxide species incorporated within a Cu2O matrix which is extremely effective for the industrially important (electro)-catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol. It is proposed that an aurophilic type of interaction takes place between both oxidized gold and copper species which stabilizes the surface against further oxidation and facilitates the binding of 4-nitrophenol to the surface and increases the rate of reaction. An added benefit is that very low gold loadings are required typically less than 2 wt% for a significant enhancement in performance to be observed. Therefore the ability to create a partially oxidized Cu–Au surface through a facile electrochemical route that uses a clean template consisting of only hydrogen bubbles should be of benefit for many more important reactions.

The galvanic replacement of isolated nanostructures of copper and silver on conducting supports as well as continuous films of copper with gold is reported. The surface morphology was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and the replacement with gold was confirmed by EDX analysis. It was found that lateral charge propagation during the replacement reaction had a significant effect in all cases. For the isolated nanostructures the deposition of gold was observed not only at the sacrificial template but also at the surrounding unmodified areas of the conducting substrate. In the case of copper films the role of lateral charge propagation was also confirmed by connecting it to an ITO electrode through an external circuit upon which gold deposition was also observed to occur. Interestingly, by inhibiting the rate of charge propagation, through the introduction of a series resistor, the morphology of gold on the copper substrate could be changed from discrete surface decoration with cube like nanoparticles to a more porous rough surface.

The electrochemical formation of nanostructured materials is generally achieved by reduction of a metal salt onto a substrate that does not influence the composition of the deposit. In this work we report that Ag, Au and Pd electrodeposited onto Cu under conditions where galvanic replacement is not viable and hydrogen gas is evolved results in the formation of nanostructured surfaces that unexpectedly incorporate a high concentration of Cu in the final material. Under cathodic polarization conditions the electrodissolution/corrosion of Cu occurs which provides a source of ionic copper that is reduced at the surface-electrolyte interface. The nanostructured Cu/M (M = Ag, Au and Pd) surfaces are investigated for their catalytic activity for the reduction of 4 nitrophenol by NaBH4 where Cu/Ag was found to be extremely active. This work indicates that a substrate electrode can be utilized in an interesting manner t make bimetallic nanostructures with enhanced catalytic activity.

Electrodeposition of novel Au/Pd bimetallic nanostructures with dendrimer films as matrices has been reported. The dendrimers exhibited highly open structures arising from protonation of amines and this made them have good penetrability for solvent molecules. The unique properties of dendrimers obviously affected the morphologies and compositions of deposited bimetallic nanostructures compared with those from unmodified surfaces. Field-emitted scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy were used to characterize these nanostructures.

Au-Pt bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by reducing the mixture of HAuCl4 and K2PtCl6 with ethanol in the presence of cinnamic acid (C6H5CHCHCO2H, CA) through a thermal process. It was found that the isolated NPs could gradually self-assemble into chain-like structures, ultimately to 3-dimensional network nanostructures by adjusting the molar ratio of CA to K2PtCl6. Energy-dispersive Spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction was used to confirm the formation of Au-Pt bimetallic nanostructures.

Novel Au-Pt bimetallic flower nanostructures fabricated on a polyamidoamine dendrimers-modified surface by electrodeposition are reported. These polyamidoamine dendrimers were stable, and they assisted the formation of Au-Pt bimetallic nanoflowers during the electrodeposition process. These nanoflowers were characterized by field-emitted scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical methods. FE-SEM images showed that the bimetallic nanoflower included two parts: the "light" and the "pale" part. The two parts consisted of many small bimetallic nanoparticles, which was attributed to the progressive nucleation process. Moreover, the "light" part contained more bimetallic nanoparticles. The morphologies of bimetallic nanoflowers depended on the electrodeposition time and potential and the layer number of assembled dendrimers. The average size of nanoflowers increased with the increase in electrodeposition time. The layer number of assembled dendrimers obviously affected the size and morphologies of the "pale" parts of deposited nanoflowers.

One-pot preparation of shell-type silver-gold bimetallic nanostructures with hollow interiors and bearing nanospikes, based on colloid seed-engaged replacement reaction and colloid-mediated deposition reactions, has been reported. Heating-induced evolution of Ag-Au bimetallic nanoshells can lead to spontaneous production of nanospikes on the colloid surface. The hollow interior structure and bimetallic nature of the as-prepared colloids are characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
