This work presents the optimization of the microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of [Zn(BDC)(H2O)2]n . The reactions were carried out at the fixed temperature of 120 ºC for 10, 20, 30 and 40 min. Pure crystalline [Zn(BDC)(H2O)2]n was obtained in high yield (ca. 90%) with a reaction time of 10 min. The phase obtained and its purity was confirmed by Rietveld refinement, with a final value for Rwp/Rexp equal to 1.48. Increased reaction times (20, 30 and 40 min) favored the formation of unwanted by products, resulting in mixtures of several crystalline phases.

The fundamental role of dendritic cells (DC in initiating and directing the primary immune response is well established. Furthermore, it is now accepted that DC may be useful in new vaccination strategies for preventing certain malignant and infectious diseases. As blood DC (BDC physiology differs from that of the DC homologues generated in vitro from monocyte precursors, it is becoming more relevant to consider BDC for therapeutic interventions. Until recently, protocols for the isolation of BDC were laborious and inefficient; therefore, their use for investigative cancer immunotherapy is not widespread. In this study, we carefully documented BDC counts, yields and subsets during apheresis (Cobe Spectra), the initial and essential procedure in creating a BDC isolation platform for cancer immunotherapy. We established that an automated software package (Version 6,0 AutoPBPC) provides an operator-independent reliable source of motionuclear cells (MNC for BDC preparation. Further, we observed that BDC might be recovered in high yields, often greater than 100% relative to the number of circulating BDC predicted by blood volume. An average of 66 million (range, 17-179) BDC per 10-1 procedure were obtained, largely satisfying the needs for immunization. Higher yields were possible on total processed blood volumes of 151. BDC were not activated by the isolation procedure and, more importantly, both BDC subsets (CD11c(+)CD123(low) and CD11c(-)CD123(high)) were equally represented. Finally, we established that the apheresis product could be used for antibody-based BDC immunoselection and demonstrated that fully functional BDC can be obtained by this procedure. Los consorcios han sido una de las novedades más influyentes en la realidad bibliotecaria mundial de los últimos cinco años. Su expansión territorial y en actividades los ha convertido en un fenómeno que ha cambiado profundamente las formas tradicionales de definir los servicios bibliotecarios. El examen atento de las actividades que ha desarrollado el Consorcio de Bibliotecas Universitarias de Cataluña (CBUC) en el ámbito de las bibliotecas digitales es una muestra de las posibilidades de cooperación existentes en estos inicios del Siglo XXI. El CBUC inició sus actividades de contratación de contenidos digitales en el 1998. Los productos y servicios licenciados se agruparon bajo el nombre de Biblioteca Digital de Catalunya (BDC). La BDC contiene actualmente unas 6.800 revistas-e, 58 BBDD y 4.100 libros-e. De forma bastante paralela en el tiempo nacieron un servidor de sumarios electrónicos de revistas y un servidor de tesis doctorales a texto completo. La evolución de las necesidades de las bibliotecas ha comportado que hoy en el CBUC se tenga la visión de la BDC como un servicio formado de dos grandes partes: a) los productos exteriores sujetos a contratación y accesibles remotamente a través de servicios comerciales, y, b) servidores de aquellos objetos digitales generados en el ámbito del CBUC y que solo pueden ser puestos en la red por nosotros mismos. Para gestionar esta segunda parte de la BDC debemos constituir almacenes o repositorios digitales. Entre las diferentes posibilidades, el CBUC ha optado por crear repositorios institucionales colectivos de diferente tipo según los materiales que contienen. Hasta el momento se han creado tres repositorios: uno para tesis, uno para revistas y uno para literatura gris de investigación. Está previsto crear un cuarto repositorio para imágenes. La ponencia finaliza con los aprendizajes del CBUC en materia de repositorios. El principal es que la mayor dificultad para crearlos no son los elementos tecnológicos sino establecer mecanismos de relación con el profesorado y la universidad para que los diferentes documentos creados de forma electrónica pasen a formar parte de los repositorios institucionales correspondientes.

Les cancers du cavum ont une incidence d'environ 0,5 cas par an et par 100 000 habitants pour les hommes en France, mais sont endémiques dans des régions comme l'Asie du Sud-Est. La prise en charge thérapeutique par radiothérapie exclusive, qui a longtemps été le standard, permet d'obtenir des taux de contrôle local pour les stades T3-T4 de l'ordre de 50 à 75 % des cas. Les techniques d'irradiation en modulation d'intensité permettent une excellente couverture dosimétrique avec une meilleure protection des organes à risque et doivent être privilégiées. L'apport d'une chimiothérapie concomitante à l'IMRT améliore significativement les taux de survie globale qui sont supérieurs ou égaux à 75 % à cinq ans dans les stades avancés. Dans la pratique courante, une radiochimiothérapie concomitante à base de sels de platine est réalisée mais la place des cures néoadjuvantes et/ou adjuvantes est discutée dans le but principal de diminuer les rechutes à distance, des études sont en cours. Enfin, la surveillance doit être axée sur la détection précoce de rechutes locales potentiellement curables et sur la prise en charge des séquelles thérapeutiques à long terme. Cancer of the nasopharynx is an uncommon malignancy in France (incidence = 0.5/year/100,000 men) but is endemic in areas like in South-East Asia. Exclusive radiation therapy used to be the standard and results in local control rates for T3-T4 tumors around 50-75 %. Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) improves tumor coverage with a sparing of organs at risk and has to be privileged. Concurrent chemotherapy with IMRT achieved significant survival benefice with 5-year overall survival above 75 %. Concurrent radiochemotherapy with platinium is the most frequent scheme but induction and adjuvant chemotherapies are discussed to reduce distant failure: studies are currently ongoing. Follow-up aims to detect early local failures with a chance of cure and to manage long-term toxicities.

Breast cancer remains a major public health problem. Even if there is an increase in this cancer curability, metastatic breast cancer remains a lethal disease in the vast majority of cases. Therapeutic advances in the chemotherapeutic and targeted therapies fields induced an increase in survival, however the proportion of long survivors remains low. Phenotypic instability, an early process initiated during tumour progression, and continued on the metastatic stage of the disease, can be one of the putative hypotheses explaining these results. An increasing amount of scientific data are pledging for a reanalysis of the phenotypic profile regarding hormone receptors and HER-2 status of metastatic lesions in order to identify drugable targets and allow individualisation of the treatment of these metastatic breast cancer patients. Phenotypic changes between the primary tumour and the paired metastatic lymph nodes are a challenging pitfall, raising the question of which site has to be assessed in the adjuvant treatment decision process. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the frequency of theses phenotypic changes altogether with new modalities to evaluate this phenotypic status.

El Consorci de Biblioteques Universitàries de Catalunya (CBUC) va ser creat el 1996 amb l'objectiu de fer i mantenir el catàleg col·lectiu de les universitats de Catalunya (CCUC) però aviat va ampliar les seves activitats amb el préstec interbibliotecari i les compres conjuntes d'informació electrònica. Aquesta darrera activitat va iniciar-se a finals de 1997 quan el CBUC va presentar als vicerectors de recerca de les universitats públiques de Catalunya el projecte de comprar bases de dades de manera consorciada. Aquests van estar-hi d'acord i van manifestar el seu interès de que en les compres conjuntes també s'incloguessin revistes electròniques. El CBUC va decidir englobar aquestes activitats sota el nom Biblioteca Digital de Catalunya (BDC) la qual naixia amb la "finalitat de proporcionar un conjunt nuclear comú d'informació electrònica per a la totalitat dels usuaris de les biblioteques del CBUC". A finals de 1998 el projecte de la BDC es va presentar a la Generalitat de Catalunya i es va obtenir un finançament per al projecte que cobria el període 1999-2001. Des de llavors la BDC ha passat per almenys tres fases: Una de formació, 1999-2001, que es va iniciar amb un ajut del llavors Departament d'Universitats, Recerca i Societat de la Informació (DURSI) de la Generalitat de Catalunya, ajut que es va traduir en una inversió de 180.000€/any i que va permetre l'inici de subscripcions conjuntes, principalment bases de dades. Una de creixement, 2002-2004, realitzada a partir d'un increment de l'ajut del DURSI, ajut que s'usa com a "capital llavor" per subscriure de forma especial revistes. En aquest moment la BDC s'amplia a universitats no membres del CBUC. Una d'estabilització, 2005-2009, en la que s'han fet algunes compres per a una part de les universitats (i no per a totes com fins llavors) i s'han iniciat alguns intents d'estendre la BDC a altres institucions de recerca. L'article caracteritza les diferents fases i mostra les causes de la seva evolució. Finalment, s'exposen els principals assoliments de la BDC així com els reptes de futur més immediats.

Recent progress in the experimental determination of protein structures allow to understand, at a very detailed level, the molecular recognition mechanisms that are at the basis of the living matter. This level of understanding makes it possible to design rational therapeutic approaches, in which effectors molecules are adapted or created de novo to perform a given function. An example of such an approach is drug design, were small inhibitory molecules are designed using in silico simulations and tested in vitro. In this article, we present a similar approach to rationally optimize the sequence of killer T lymphocytes receptors to make them more efficient against melanoma cells. The architecture of this translational research project is presented together with its implications both at the level of basic research as well as in the clinics.

BACKGROUND: Gemcitabine, oxaliplatin and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) are active in biliary tract cancer and have a potentially synergistic mode of action and non-overlapping toxicity. The objective of these trials was to determine response, survival and toxicity separately in patients with bile duct cancer (BDC) and gallbladder cancer (GBC) treated with gemcitabine/oxaliplatin/5-FU chemotherapy. METHODS: Eligible patients with histologically proven, advanced or metastatic BDC (n=37) or GBC (n=35) were treated with gemcitabine (900 mg m(-2) over 30 min), oxaliplatin (65 mg m(-2)) and 5-FU (1500 mg m(-2) over 24 h) on days 1 and 8 of a 21-day cycle. Tumour response was the primary outcome measure. RESULTS: Response rates were 19% (95% CI: 6-32%) and 23% (95% CI: 9-37%) for BDC and GBC, respectively. Median survivals were 10.0 months (95% CI: 8.6-12.4) and 9.9 months (95% CI: 7.5-12.2) for BDC and GBC, respectively, and 1- and 2-year survival rates were 40 and 23% in BDC and 34 and 6% in GBC (intention-to-treat analysis). Major grade III and IV adverse events were neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, elevated bilirubin and anorexia. CONCLUSION: Triple-drug chemotherapy achieves comparable results for response and survival to previously reported regimens, but with more toxicity.

L'empresa Desenvolupaments Intel·ligents es dedica a la creació del software financer i borsari. Tot el sistema informàtic esta basat en màquines amb plataformes Microsoft Windows. S'ha decidit implementar un nou sistema informàtic basat en GNU/Linux. Aquest és l'objecte d'aquest treball. El nou sistema informàtic basat en GNU/Linux ha de incloure tots els equips clients (que seran els ordinadors nous) i els servidors (es reaprofitaran els ordinadors antics) cobrint tots els serveis que abans donava el servidors antics mitjançant aquest sistema operatiu i software lliure.

Glioblastoma multiforme is the most common and most malignant primary brain tumour with a dismal prognosis. The advent of new chemotherapies with alkylating agents crossing the blood-brain barrier, like temozolomide, have permitted to notably ameliorate the survival of a subgroup of patients. Improved outcome was associated with epigenetic silencing of the MGMT (O6-methylguanin methyltransferase) gene by promotor methylation, thereby blocking its repair capability, thus rendering the alkylating agents more effective. This particularity can be tested by methylation specific PCR on resected tumour tissue, best on fresh frozen biopsies, and allows identification of patients more susceptible to respond favourably to the treatment.

Le prélèvement des ganglions sentinelles apparaît comme une technique séduisante pour l'évaluation ganglionnaire des cancers du col utérin de faible stade. La sélection d'une population à bas risque de métastase ganglionnaire, un entraînement minimal et le respect de quelques règles simples permettent de limiter le risque de faux négatif au minimum. La technique apporte des informations supplémentaires sur le plan anatomique en identifiant des ganglions situés en dehors des zones habituelles de curage, et sur le plan histologique avec la mise en évidence de cellules tumorales isolées et surtout de micrométastases dont la valeur pronostique est suspectée Sentinel node biopsy appears as a promising technique for the assessment of nodal disease in early cervical cancers. Selection of a population with a low risk of nodal metastasis, a minimal training, and simple rules allow a low false negative rate. Sentinel node biopsy provides supplementary information, such as anatomical information (nodes outside of routine lymphadenectomy areas) and histological information (isolated tumors cells and micrometastases).

Apart from therapeutic advances related to new treatments, our practices in the management of early breast cancer have been modified by to key organizational settings (1) mass screening, substantially altering the presentation and epidemiology of breast cancer and (2) the development of guidelines to ensure that any patient management is in agreement with the demonstrated impact in the adjuvant treatment. In daily practice, the impact of screening and guidelines recommendations has put us now in a paradoxical situation: while the majority of non-metastatic breast cancers treated in the hexagon are node negative, most of the results of clinical studies on chemotherapy and targeted therapies today arise from populations predominantly node positive. Therefore, it seemed legitimate to convene a working group around a reflection on the directions of adjuvant chemotherapy in a growing node negative population in order to better respond to the questions of the field oncologists, trying to address the discrepancies between different existing guidelines.
